On this episode, Chandran Kukathas delivers a lecture at the Mercatus Center on capitalism, human nature, and the meaning of life. Kukathas argues that capitalism is less a fixed system than a constantly evolving set of rules and relationships, shaped by our restless desire to transform the world. He shows how politics, rent-seeking, and shifting definitions of capital are woven into its fabric, making it impossible to separate “pure markets” from the social and political contexts in which they operate. Kukathas challenges both critics and defenders who treat capitalism as the source of every social ill or success, urging instead a sober recognition of human limits, the diversity of our ends, and the case for modest, freedom-preserving reforms.Dr. Chandran Kukathas is Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Political Science at School of Social Sciences at Singapore Management University and a Distinguished Affiliated Fellow at the F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the Mercatus Center. Note: This is the Free Content version of the interview with Tjalling Janssen. The full interview can be accessed as a Tier 2 Patreon member, or purchased for a one-time fee. More information at www.patreon.com/RejectedReligion. Tjalling is a PhD researcher at the Center for History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents (HHP), based at the University of Amsterdam. His research interests include intermediary beings, magic, alchemy and Paracelsianism, and the reception of these subjects in (early to late) modernity. He investigates these topics from an environmental perspective as well as through social categories like class. His doctoral project entails an environmental reception history of the concept of elemental beings from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, through its manifestations in magic, alchemy, literature, mining and agriculture. In this episode, we explore the shifting terrain of magical contact—where spirits, nature, and power intersect. Drawing from his article “Encounters, Evocations and Elemental Beings”, we'll trace the philosophical and esoteric implications of two very different modes of engaging with the unseen: Paracelsus's reverent encounters with elemental beings, and Dr. Rudd's ritual evocations. Along the way, we'll unpack the role of monsters, the ethics of spiritual mediation, and the deeper question of whether esotericism must rest on a singular, perennial foundation—or whether it can evolve, diversify, and apply to new contexts like ecology, psychedelics, tulpas, and even extraterrestrial contact. This is a conversation about relational knowing, cultural consciousness, and the future of interdisciplinary esoteric research.I have one correction to mention beforehand; Tjalling made a mistake in his wording when he mentioned the text De Meteoris (which comes up in the discussion), in his haste to explain the temporal trajectory. In all texts before De Meteoris elemental beings have souls. They are soulless from De Meteoris onwards, but that text lacks the possibility for elemental beings to acquire souls through marriage. The Liber de nymphis introduces that, and thus fulfills the implications of reciprocity and immanence (the “seeking out” or initiation of contact) that are absent from De Meteoris. In this Tao Dialogues episode, David explores how you can drop the burden of proving, performing, and perfecting and know your true value.Have you ever believed that your worth must be earned, proven, or validated by others? Do you often find yourself chasing approval, striving to be “good enough,” only to end up exhausted and unfulfilled? Do you sometimes hear the voice of your Inner Child whispering, “Will I ever be enough just as I am?”David unpacks these questions and offers a gentle path back to the truth of who you already are. The Tao teaches that just as rivers flow and mountains stand tall without needing permission or applause, we too are worthy by our existence. There is nothing we must do to earn this worth. No approval we must gain. No role we must play... Send us a textWhat if everything you perceive is based on error rather than truth? Far from being discouraging, this realization offers profound liberation – if the world were truth, we'd be permanently stuck with suffering, separation, and death. In this enlightening session from Sedona, Hope Johnson explores how we project our entire experience and can transform it by bringing our perceptions to the truth. "The world is an invention based on an erroneous thought," she explains, "a thought that made you into something you're not." When we recognize we're still as God created us, we find freedom from the ego's constant conditioning toward separation. The most powerful transformation occurs when we welcome discomfort rather than resist it. Hope suggests responding to anxiety or uncomfortable feelings with "Hooray! This is where I bring illusions to the truth." These moments of apparent difficulty become holy ground for awakening when approached with willingness rather than fear.Through personal stories, listener questions, and profound insights, Hope demonstrates how to distinguish between the ego's voice (which feels rushed, controlling, and evaluative) and the Holy Spirit's guidance (which feels inspirational, peaceful, and connective). We explore how physical symptoms and energy depletion stem from our thoughts rather than external sources, and how tears often mask deeper truths about our perceptions. The session culminates in a beautiful explanation of our interconnectedness. We "people our world" with those who reflect our beliefs, yet communicate on a level beneath manifestation, always connecting with each other's truth. When we recognize that everything serves our awakening, we find perfect peace regardless of circumstances.Ready to transform your perception and experience the freedom of truth? Listen now, and discover why Hope often finds herself laughing at the illusions we create. Your world is waiting to be seen differently.Support the show

Multipolarity Dialogues is a new series of interviews that scan the geopolitical horizon. We'll be talking to some of the sharpest analysts, thinkers, experts, about how they see the world beyond the visible edge of the geopolitical now. This week: Carlos Roa is the Director of Research at the Washington DC Danube Institute. He was formerly the executive editor of National Interest magazine. Last time on the show – an episode well worth seeking out – he offered us a DC Rake's Progress, sketching the shape of the technocrat class who run Washington, from first infant mewling as a Pentagon intern, to final wrinkled Cruise strike on a Middle Eastern country. This time, he's got his eyes on something more global. The New Golden Road – and its rivals. There is the Silk Road, there is the Belt-and Road, but there is also a third way to move goods from East to West overland. It is this that Roa has been studying in his recent paper, also titled The New Golden Road. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, quietly unveiled at a G20 summit in 2023, is designed to link India with Europe via the Arabian Peninsula, stitching together ports, railways, energy pipelines, and digital cables. In this episode Andrew Collingwood talks to Carlos about the deep mechanics, the economics, and the distortions of geopolitical gravity that this grand new interconnector will bring. You can get special paywalled premium episodes of Multipolarity every month on Patreon: https://patreon.com/multipolarity
This revelation forms the cornerstone of our exploration into what A Course in Miracles calls "miracles that collapse time."During this raw, unfiltered conversation, we dive deep into the subtle yet profound difference between circular miracles—which provide temporary relief while maintaining the illusion of separation—and miracles that truly collapse time by establishing that we're simply dreaming a dream whose content isn't true. The journey takes unexpected turns as we examine personal boundaries through a radical lens. Rather than viewing boundaries as self-protection mechanisms, what happens when we recognize they aren't personal at all but guided by the Holy Spirit? This perspective transforms how we navigate relationships, allowing for a level of trust and freedom that might seem impossible to the ego mind.Perhaps most striking is the transparent exploration of how this understanding plays out in daily life—from food preferences to sexual experiences. By stripping away the heavy meaning and judgment the ego places on these aspects of human experience, we discover a natural sensuality and joy available in every moment. The conversation continually returns to a powerful practice: watching the unwatched mind. When we develop the habit of witnessing thoughts without identifying with them, even seemingly distressing thoughts lose their power. This watchfulness reveals that whatever arises in our experience—pleasant or challenging—is perfectly designed for our awakening. If you're ready to move beyond spiritual concepts into lived experience, this dialogue offers a refreshingly honest glimpse into what freedom from the ego's constraints actually looks like. Join us in exploring how transparency, trust, and true forgiveness open the door to a profound peace that transcends all circumstances.Support the show
Recently, Philip Pilkington and David Dusenbury published a couple of papers and an article on the long story of China's intellectual history with the West. A story that extends beyond Marco Polo, and has far more breadth and interchange in pre-modern times than most would suspect. David Dusenbury is an Associate Professor of Humanities at the University of Florida, author of three well-regarded books of religious history, and a frequent writer and thinker on the history of ideas. Last month, our duo sat down to comb over what they'd learned in the project for the Danube Culture podcast. We're bringing you their exchange as a bonus this week.

In this Tao Dialogues episode, David explores the gentle, often misunderstood power of being humble.Have you ever thought that being humble makes you weak? Do you find yourself confused between setting healthy boundaries and being submissive? Or perhaps you wonder if humility and ambition can ever walk the same path? Humility is often mistaken for invisibility in a world that values noise, boldness and assertion. You'll learn how humility isn't about hiding but revealing our quiet strength. True humility in Taoism is not about shrinking ourselves or surrendering our values. It is about recognising our place in the vast rhythm of the Cosmos. On this episode, Peter Boettke chats with political theorist Chandran Kukathas on his latest book, Dialogues on Immigration and the Open Society(Routledge, 2025), which addresses the most important ethical and political questions about immigration and aims to teach by questioning rather than preaching. He urges conceptual clarity about terms like “civilization,” “state,” and “immigration,” and argues that framing debates strictly as “justice” disputes is unhelpful amid deep moral disagreement. Building on his book, Immigration and Freedom, he warns that immigration control often curtails citizens' freedoms and highlights how restrictive policies can create a hostile climate toward migrants even where overall public support for immigration remains strong.Dr. Chandran Kukathas is Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Political Science at School of Social Sciences at Singapore Management University and a Distinguished Affiliated Fellow at the F.A. Today's episode focuses on the intersection of Islam, society, and politics in Indonesia, the world's single-largest majority Muslim country and the world's third biggest democracy. Indonesian Islam is notable for its diversity, its associational strength, and its prominent role in both the transition from authoritarian rule to democracy in the late 1990s and in democratic politics in the country since that time. To discuss this huge, complicated topic, Dialogues on Southeast Asia turns to Professor Robert Hefner, Professor of Anthropology and Professor of Global Studies at Boston University. Professor Hefner is the author of four major studies of Islam in Indonesia: Hindu Javanese: Tengger Tradition and Islam (Princeton University Press, 1985), The Political Economy of Mountain Java: An Interpretive History (University of California Press, 1990), Civil Islam: Muslims and Democratization in Indonesia (Princeton University Press, 2000), and, most recently, Islam and Citizenship in Indonesia: Democracy and the Quest for an Inclusive Public Ethics (Routledge, 2024). He is also the author of a long list of journal articles and book chapters and the editor or co-editor of no less than fifteen edited or co-edited volumes, many of which serve as foundational texts in the comparative study of religion and of Islam in particular. A towering figure in the study of Islam in Indonesia and in the comparative study of religion more broadly. Robert Hefner's work spans the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, and political science to cover the intersection and interplay of religion, society, and politics in Indonesia and beyond. As they say in the Economist: "Serbia is at a crossroads..." Anti-corruption protests after the collapse of the station roof in Novi Sad have not gone away, now many months after the event. The country's leader, President Vučić, is under pressure as never before, after 13 years in power. He has offered 'televised dialogues': his opponents have declined. The standoff continues. Meanwhile, in the tiny breakaway relic of the Bosnian War, Republika Srpska, the crossroads has come to a fork.In February 2025, the President of the RS region of Bosnia, Milorad Dodik, was stripped of his office, for planning to hold an independence referendum to break away from Bosnia. He was handed a one-year prison sentence plus a six-year political ban. Christian Schmidt, Bosnia's High Representative, froze budgetary support for RS ruling parties after attempts to arrest Dodik were thwarted by Republika Srpska police. Two concurrent crises, oddly twinned: as we all know, when Serbia goes off, the world needs to stand well back. Miša Đurković is a Principal Research Fellow and Director at the Institute of European Studies in Belgrade. This week, he joins us to unpack the dense politics of this geopolitical pocket rocket.
Send us a textWhat if nothing could ever go wrong in your life? What if every challenging experience—betrayal, loss, conflict—was perfectly orchestrated for your awakening? In this profound exploration of mind and perception, Hope Johnson invites us to recognize that the foundation of every thought is love, though fear often distorts our recognition of this truth.Hope shares personal stories that illuminate how we unknowingly assign "special functions" to others in our relationships, creating suffering when they don't fulfill our expectations. Through vulnerable examples from her own marriage and intimate relationships, she demonstrates how releasing these expectations transforms our connections and brings us into alignment with joy. Rather than seeing ourselves as victims of others' behaviors, we can recognize how we're projecting our fears and limitations. One of the most liberating insights Hope offers is that no one is affected by their past—because there is no past. All trauma is being projected right now, in this moment. This recognition frees us from using past experiences as justification for current pain and opens us to the "holy instant"—a moment of perfect clarity where illusions dissolve and we experience the ecstasy of truth. The conversation takes fascinating turns into how our bodies are merely projections of thought, not actually affected by food, aging, or past events. Hope challenges common spiritual misconceptions, particularly the idea that spiritual advancement means denying natural human experiences like sexuality or pleasure. Instead, she suggests allowing the Holy Spirit to orchestrate all aspects of our lives without judgment or control.Whether you're struggling with relationship conflicts, physical limitations, or simply feeling stuck in patterns that don't serve you, this wisdom dialogue offers a radical reframe: everything is being orchestrated for your awakening. Listen closely, and you might just discover a deeper peace than you've known before.Support the show

About Tricia:Tricia Baker, along with her family, established Attitudes In Reverse® (AIR®) in 2010, soon after her son Kenny died by suicide following a long battle against severe depression and anxiety. Mental illness is like AIR. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. It is all around us®. AIR's mission is to create a community of understanding, kindness and empathy through mental health and suicide prevention education. After a 20-year corporate career in marketing, Tricia took the tremendous loss of Kenny and recognized the need for educating youth about good mental health. Since January 2011, Tricia has developed programs and educated over 250,000 students, parents, school staff, and business partners in New Jersey and across the US.Dogs are an integral part of Tricia's work with AIR®, including K-12 mental wellness educational programs. Administrators say that the retention rate of the mental health material is far greater than other programs, as the students associate the materials with visiting the dogs. As AIR Program Director, Tricia launched a program for K-4th graders, teaching young children to identify their emotions through discussions of dogs. Tricia has very recently published her first book; Miki & Friends Go to School: Exploring Emotions through the Eyes of Dogs based on this program. In addition to being a mental health advocate and educator, Tricia is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA), AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Instructor and a Certified AIR Therapy Dog Evaluator. Or wonder if releasing your grip might let the world “get away” with what should never have happened? These are the fundamental questions of letting go—not from the mind, but from the heart, especially our Inner Child, who still seeks justice, safety, and acknowledgement. You'll discover how NOT letting go is not protection but a chain that weighs you down, and how acceptance, not approval or forgetting, cuts it clean...Read the blog post that inspired this episode: https://davidjameslees.substack.com/p/unforgiveness-the-chain-that-bindsOur Tao Dialogues are powerful yet gentle teachings about authenticity, spirituality and finding emotional balance and flow in everyday life.
