Synopsis In 1933, Aaron Copland introduced Roy Harris to Serge Koussevitzky, the famous conductor of the Boston Symphony in those days. Now, Koussevitzky was one of the great patrons of American music and was always looking for new American music and new American composers. Roy Harris had been described to him as an "American Mussorgsky," which probably intrigued the Russian-born conductor. When Koussevitzky learned that Harris had been born in a log cabin in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, no less – well, perhaps he hoped the 41-year old Harris might produce music equally all-American in origin. "Write me a big symphony from the West," asked Koussevitzky, and Harris responded with a three-movement orchestral work titled: "Symphony, 1933," which had its premiere performance on today's date in 1934 with the Boston Symphony under Koussevitzky's direction. Koussevitzky loved it. "I think that nobody has captured in music the essence of American life -- its vitality, its greatness, its strength -- so well as Roy Harris," enthused the famous conductor, who recorded the piece at Carnegie Hall in New York just one week after its premiere. And it was Koussevitzky's Boston Symphony that would subsequently premiere Harris's Second, Third, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies as well. There are currently about 7 million people globally living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic disease that encompasses both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The disease can affect how people work, travel and spend time with family and friends, and can make it difficult to talk about with loved ones and healthcare providers. The CONFIDE survey is a global cross-sectional survey of more than 800 healthcare professionals and more than 1,600 adults living with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease in the United States, Europe and Japan. The study was designed to better understand the burden, barriers and care experiences of those living with moderate to severely active ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease and how they communicate with their healthcare providers.Guest host Dr. Cem Kayhan, U.S. and Global Head, Medical Affairs, Gastroenterology at Lilly, is joined by Dr. David Rubin, Section Chief of Gastroenterology at University of Chicago, Lilly's Dr. Deborah Fisher, U.S. Medical Affairs, Gastroenterology, and Eoin Flynn, Global Scientific Communications Manager at Lilly, who also serves as a patient advisor for the CONFIDE studies, as he lives with ulcerative colitis. The group will discuss how Lilly's CONFIDE survey sheds light on key gaps in patient-doctor communication that can impact optimal treatment approaches and reinforce the stigma that can be associated with these diseases.

In July 1974, sixteen members of the Carmel of Compiegne, France, were executed under the guillotine in the final days of the French Revolution's “Reign of Terror.” They are called venerated martyrs in the Catholic Church, who sang “Salve Regina” and other hymns all the way to their deaths. Their story of faith and perseverance has inspired a novella, movies, and now an opera, Francis Poulenc's “Dialogues des Carmélites,” drawn from John Dexter's classic 1977 production. Gloria interviews soprano Christine Goerke, who plays the Carmeltine prioress Madame Lidoine. They talk about Christine's own faith journey and preparation for this powerful role, along with Gloria's spiritual connection as a third-order Carmelite. The Metropolitan Opera is showcasing Dialogues des Carmélites through January 28, 2023. What's good world, we back from the crypt with some more hood philosophy shit, and on this episode of the podcast, I'm going down the artificial intelligence rabbit hole and chopping it up with an AI. We sat down and discussed - well, I sat down, the AI I'm not so sure - all things from the level of concern we, as humans, should have about potentially being exterminated by our robot overlords, whether or not Elon Musk is simply being hyperbolic when he tells us we're 'releasing the demon', if Alex Jones truly is a threat to democracy, the existence of free will for humans and how AI plays into that, and my personal favorite, the possible existence of inter-dimensional beings in Kant's noumenal world. It was a wild conversation that entailed many interesting repercussions, I'm looking forward to sitting down for another one in due time. Stay woke fam...
