This episode is a special Pride Month encore from 2016—my very first conversation with writer Steve Orlando. Steve joined me back then to talk about his new BOOM! Studios book Namesake, a bold sci-fi adventure about a gay fireman who crosses into an alternate dimension to bury his fathers—and uncover the truth about his identity and past.We also dove into Steve's impactful work in the DC Universe, including Supergirl, Midnighter & Apollo, and his ambitious plans for the then-upcoming Justice League of America launch in January. It's a great time capsule of Steve's early rise—and the kind of inclusive storytelling he's continued to champion ever since. Let's rewind to 2016 and celebrate Pride with Steve Orlando.
We are not slowing down as my Pride Month Feature rolls along with returning show guest Eisner, GLAAD, and Ringo nominated comics writer Steve Orlando hanging out with me to talk about two of his projects dropping with the big two. Last time he was on we were talking about the ongoing Scarlet Witch series which is being continued in a new five issue mini-series The Vision and The Scarlet Witch, recognizing their 50th wedding anniversary which will see the return of White Vision. It's hard to believe their wedding was 50 years ago in Giant Sized Avengers #4. Steve is promising a Lovecraftian slat to the series which I'm personally rather excited about. Recently it was announced that he will also be working on the Magical Mysteries of Shazam on DC Go!, Venom: Original Sin jumps from Marvel Unlimited Online to print, the exciting conclusion of Ripperland who he's co-writing with John Harris Dunning just wrapped up and will be dropping as a trade soon with Dark Horse Comics, and the trade of Avengers Assemble: The Serpent Scenario just hit too. So, Steve is quite the busy guy at the moment. If you want to catch up with him, you can find him on BlueSky or on Instagram. Shark rescue Byron talked about on the show The Vision and The Scarlet Witch From the publisher The next chapter in one of comics' greatest love stories arrives this May! Celebrating the 50th anniversary of their iconic wedding in GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS (1974) #4, Scarlet Witch and Vision are back together in THE VISION & THE SCARLET WITCH, a five-issue limited series by current SCARLET WITCH scribe Steve Orlandoand returning series artists Lorenzo Tammetta and Jacopo Camagni. THE VISION & THE SCARLET WITCH serves as the latest evolution of Orlando's ongoing SCARLET WITCH run, which has successfully redefined the adventures of Wanda Maximoff. Carving out her own path in the Marvel Universe as a solo hero, Scarlet Witch's magic has never been more powerful. But when it comes to helping Vision, she'll need more than strength alone! Befitting their decades-spanning romance, Scarlet Witch and Vision team up for a dramatic saga that will test their souls and break their hearts! The Magical Mysteries of Shazam! From the publisher In The Magical Mysteries of Shazam! by writer Steve Orlando (Supergirl, Martian Manhunter) and artist Giopota, Billy Batson has had to grow up fast. Life with Tawny, a talking tiger and also Billy's adoptive uncle, is humble. It's not always easy! Billy lives with Tawny's other foster children, Darla, Pedro, and Freddy. Despite all he's been through, Billy is willfully hopeful. In addition to all the struggles a blended foster family faces, Fawcett City isn't exactly the safest place to live. It might be a fantastic, whimsical city full of both humans and talking animals, but it's also got a monster problem—in fact, a Monster Society! Soon Billy is granted the ability to say a magic word and transform into a mighty hero! Fawcett City cheers its new champion—and little do they know, he's one of their own. Or do they? Because Billy's siblings are pretty sure they saw him turn into a full-grown superhero. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. In this on-the-road edition of The Marvelists, Eddie Wilson heads to New York's capital city for a day packed with comic book conversations! Recorded live on June 8th, Eddie catches up with an all-star lineup of creators including Mike McKone, Steve Orlando, Val Semeiks, Paul Pelletier, Kevin Conrad, Ron Marz, and John Hebert. From legendary runs to behind-the-scenes stories, each guest brings their own unique perspective on the world of comics. It's a creator-packed episode you won't want to miss!
While comic books have traditionally been defined by heroes that reflect the extremes of masculinity and femininity, and aimed at a primary straight-male audience, a notable shift has happened over the past 20 or so years. Where queer characters were once merely hinted at, or when included portrayed as grotesque stereotypes, since at least the 2000s comics have become increasingly more inclusive. Now it's common for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, asexual and other gender nonconforming characters to be featured in even the biggest comic-book franchises, and to even helm their own solo books. So join us for our 2025 Pride Month Special as the Great Pop Culture Debate attempts to name the Best LGBTQIA+ Super Hero. Characters discussed: Batwoman, Black Cat, Midnighter, Wiccan, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Miss America (America Chavez), Northstar, John Constantine, Apollo, Deadpool, Mystique, Iceman, Dreamer, Superman (Jon Kent). Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Bob Erlenback and Brendan Hay, and special guest Steve Orlando, prolific comic-book writer for Marvel, DC Comics, and other publishers, as they discuss 16 of the most-popular out super-heroes in comics. Play along at home by finding the listener bracket here. Make a copy for yourself, fill it out, and see if your picks match up with ours! Time is inescapable -- as if we need to explain that to anyone living in January 2025. However, our listeners who've been paying attention to our podcast this past month know the tyrannical clock is particularly present in our imagination. This preoccupation began with this week's conversation about Ripperland with John Harris Dunning, which we recorded in December last year and has been informing nearly every episode we've released since. Dunning co-wrote Ripperland with Steve Orlando, and it's illustrated by Alessandro Oliveri, colored by Francesca Vivaldi, and lettered by Fabio Amelia. The comic is set in 2188, three hundred years after Jack the Ripper terrorized London. In exchange for financial and military aid, England has given itself over to America, transforming into a gargantuan Victorian theme park. While no dinosaurs go on a rampage, a Jack the Ripper impersonator does. Enter American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg. Ripperland is a cracking good time but carries a sharp, damning wit. For as obsessed about Jack the Ripper as we are, we don't really understand or appreciate the reality surrounding the horrific murders that occurred in Whitechapel in 1888. It's a vicious, societal spook story in which storytellers of every medium - prose, song, cinema, comics - return repeatedly and readers hungrily accept. What does that say about the giver and the receiver? We discuss Jack the Ripper's hold on our planet with John Harris Dunning and how exploring the past from a position of the future creates a tantalizing mental exercise. Does fate damn us to repeat our mistakes, or are we just too stupid to learn? Ripperland #1 is currently on sale from Dark Horse Comics, and issue two will arrive in shops on February 26th. Let's speculate, which Marvel Legends could we be seeing in 2025 and 2026?
Power of X-Men: The Greatest Comic Book Podcast in All of the Multiverse!
We have J. Kosmic for the first time on Power of X-Men, and we discuss our most anticipated X-figures for 2025!
On today's episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner I've got returning guest John Harris Dunning on the show with me to chat about his new Dark Horse Comics Project, Ripperland, co-written by Steve Orlando, with artwork from Alessandro Oliveri, colors by Francesca Vivaldi, and lettering duties covered by Fabio Amelia. We touched on the project in October when John dropped in for our Horror Movie Recommendation Special that Dark Horse co-sponsored with us, but I wanted to hear the full picture, so we made time during the busy holiday season to sit down again for a bit. Ripperland is set in a dystopian future where Victorian England has become a historical theme park for American tourists. Alan Moore's From Hell has been an all-time favorite of mine so it was a delight to hear John's take on the cultural implications of the Jack the Ripper mythos and the wider nuances he's exploring about our national identities and how they interact through the detectives in the story working collaboratively to solve a murder. He also shares what the collaboration process has been like working with Steve on the project. Ripperland is out in stores on January 22, 2025. Make sure to call your shop and have them pull you a copy in advance and check the shelves for his other Dark Horse project Summer Shadows, a steamy romance thriller set on a remote Greek Island that was a favorite of mine in 2024. If you want to hear more about it, check out our 2024 conversation here. Ripperland From the publisher The year is 2188 and Jack the Ripper has returned to London. For the last century, a shattered post-Brexit England has operated as a massive Victorian theme park in exchange for American military and financial protection. But when an American mogul's grandson is killed in the heart of London, the delicate status quo is threatened. Is the killer a brilliant maniac? Americans taking advantage of their superior technology? Or the English Underground Resistance, wishing to throw off the yoke of American oppression and re-join the modern world? American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg must overcome their clashing ideologies in order to find the truth in the foggy streets of 22nd Century London. Summer Shadows Trade paperback available April 22nd From the publisher By day the Greek islands are all sand, sea and fun…but by night they're the perfect hunting ground for vampires! Nick Landry is searching for his ex on the unspoiled island of Avraxos. Anthony was the love of his life, and without knowing why he left, Nick can't move on. But Anthony isn't the only one to disappear on Avraxos. Coast guard officer Alekos Kourkoulos is on the trail of another young man who disappeared there. Both men had fallen in with the glamorous set onboard a jet-black superyacht moored offshore before vanishing. As the mystery deepens, Nick and Alekos discover that the brighter the sunshine, the darker the shadows… Acclaimed writer John Harris Dunning (Tumult, Wiper, Salem Brownstone) and talented artist Ricardo Cabral (Wiper) team up again to bring you this darkly seductive horror.
