For the first time ever, Star Trek targets younger audiences, and does so for the first time using solely 3D animation. Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy is the animated television series within executive producer Alex Kurtzman's expanded Star Trek Universe. Luke and Jae boldly check out the first season of this Paramount+ / Nickelodeon series - the tenth Star Trek series. In 2383, five years after the USS Voyager returned to to Earth at the end of Star Trek: Voyager, a motley crew of young aliens find an abandoned Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar, in the Tars Lamora prison colony. Taking control of the ship, they must learn to work together as they make their way from the Delta Quandrant to the Alpha Quandrant.
I won't lie, when I first learned that a new animated Star Trek series would be coming to Nickelodeon amidst all of the other decent to terrible Trek shows that are out there, I wasn't sure how it would pan out. Turns out it was pretty good and we have the first half of it with the Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1: Episodes 1-10 Blu-ray.

Today Talking Trek is in for a special treat today when Shawna Benson stops by the show to talk about the first season that just wrapped up on Nickelodeon and Paramount+. We examine the show from top to bottom, and the first episode through the last regarding the story, character development and the ideas and themes that are present all throughout the season. This interview was so fun and natural that we went over on time (shocking). But this is a great interview to listen to as we look forward to more fresh content inside STFC for 2023. But when Hologram Janeway's last act connects Chakotay's future with Vice Admiral Janeway's present, she goes to court for Dal and wins a new mission for the crew. What's removable on a Rowdy Roddy Piper action figure? Would 10 out of 10 protostar explosion nebulas look great? How motivating could a time butthole message be? When the Protostar is surrounded and Admiral Jellico wants an away team sent over, the baddies sub in and immobilize the kids in a relatively considerate way. But when a refugee from a future TGG episode lets Vice Admiral Janeway out of the brig, it's moments too late to stop the living construct from infecting the fleet. Are there any rules to egg nog? Is the Protostar the Neon Deion of starships? How long can you live inside a glass table? It's the episode that's sending a very risky hoodie to the USS Van Citters! When it's Freaky Friday for Vice Admiral Janeway and Dal, the communication between ships finally goes beyond Morse code. But when The Vindicator takes over as top baddie on the Dauntless, Commander Tysess can't get it together to stop their mission. How do you explain a warp bubble to kids? Did Ben break The Living Construct? What's actually being tested in the Kobayashi Maru? When the crew is stuck in the neutral zone, there's plenty of time to swap sob stories while they wait for repairs on the Protostar. But when The Diviner gets caught up on the future, Janeway finally gets curious about the mysterious guest on her ship. Why are most triple pips an unfun hang? Is Rok-Tahk actually Rancor? Who's got the most painful expression of a sold-into-slavery story? It's the episode with complicated feelings!Support the production of Greatest TrekMusic by Adam RaguseaFollow Greatest Trek on Twitter, and discuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek!Greatest Trek on Twitch | Facebook group | Subreddit | Discord | WikiSign up for our mailing list!
