Auckland health authorities were given hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the dental surgery wait list in 2020, but in 2022 nearly 2000 children are still waiting for the treatment. The children, many of them in daily pain, need work done under general anaesthetic because it was either complex or because they would find it difficult to be awake for a dental procedure - particularly very young children. A new report has revealed the dire state of children's dentistry in Auckland. It shows thousands of children are on the waiting list for serious dental work - with many are waiting for eight months or more in pain. The list is growing faster than the city's public dental service can clear it. There are not enough resources to keep up. The report also found many children will miss out on their routine appointments this year, with Covid-19 adding to the delays. Dental association president Katie Ayers told Health Correspondent Rowan Quinn she knew there were problems but was surprised by the enormity.

Labour's oral health policy is being welcomed by the New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA).$176 million is being promised to improve dental access for the lowest income New Zealanders, including increasing the emergency dental grant from $300 to $1000.NZDA President Dr Katie Ayers told Chris Lynch they are thrilled with this policy, the emergency grant has been set at $300 for over 25 years so this is long over due change.She says the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff approach isn’t sustainable and preventative measures are needed such as a sugar levy and water fluoridation.Listen above.
