Juliana Horatia Ewing (August 3, 1841 – May 13, 1885) was an English writer of children's stories. Her writings display a sympathetic insight into children's lives, an admiration for things military, and a strong religious faith.Known as Julie, she was the second of ten children of the Rev. Alfred Gatty, Vicar of Ecclesfield in Yorkshire, and Margaret Gatty, who was herself a children's author. Their children were educated mainly by their mother, but Julie was often the driving force behind their various activities: drama, botany and so on. Later she was responsible for setting up a village library in Ecclesfield, and helped out in the parish with her three sisters. Early stories of hers appeared in Charlotte Mary Yonge's magazine The Monthly Packet. On 1 June 1867, Julie married Major Alexander Ewing(1830–1895) of the Army Pay Corps. A musician, composer and translator, he was also a keen churchgoer and shared his wife's interest in literature. Within a week of their marriage, the Ewings left England for Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, where he had received a new posting. They remained there for two years, before returning to England in 1869 and spending eight years in the army town of Aldershot. Although her husband was sent overseas again, to Malta in 1879 and Sri Lanka in 1881, Ewing's poor health precluded her from accompanying him.On her husband's return in 1883, the Ewings moved to Trull, Somerset, and then in 1885 to Bath, in the hopes that the change of air would do her good. However, her health continued to decline. After two operations, she died in Bath on 13 May 1885. She was given a military funeral at Trull three days later.Julie's sister Horatia Katharine Frances Gatty (1846–1945) published a memorial of her life and works, which includes a publication history of her stories. A later selection includes some of Julie's letters and drawings about Canada. A biography of her by Gillian Avery appeared in 1961.-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. The Week in Westminster

Sonia Sodha delves in to the latest developments at Westminster.Sir Keir Starmer celebrated not one, but two, new trade deals this week: with the United States and India. But has Britain got good deals? The Labour chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee, Liam Byrne, and former Conservative trade minister and UK trade envoy to the US, Sir Conor Burns, discuss the merits of the agreements.Following the local election results, in which Reform UK made strong gains at the expense of the main parties, restive Labour MPs have been making their feelings known to the Prime Minister about the government's performance. One of those MPs, Jo White, chair of the Red Wall Group, joined Joe Dromey, General Secretary of the Fabians, to discuss whether Labour needs a change of direction.A spate of recent cyber attacks on retailers including M&S and Co-op have caused alarm in business circles and in government. Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden this week said the attacks were a "wake-up call" for business. To discuss that Sonia speaks to Ciaran Martin, former chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre and now a professor at Oxford University. And, to reflect on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Sonia is joined by Lord Michael Heseltine, former Deputy Prime Minister, who witnessed the celebrations in 1945, and Alex Baker, the first Labour MP to represent Aldershot - the home of the British Army.

The government has pledged to stop using hotels to house asylum seekers. But in early November nearly three hundred people were moved into a hotel in Altrincham in Greater Manchester. It follows violent demonstrations outside hotels in Rotherham, Hull, Tamworth, Manchester, Aldershot and Bristol in the summer. WARNING - EXTREME CONTENTIf you are effected by this podcast and need help please reach out to one of the brilliant organisations such as Samaritans or PTSD999Mick Baker was born in Kent and from an early age he wanted to join the Army. He went on to become a soldier and joined the Royal Army Medical Corp and went to training in Lichfield. He inadvertently became top recruit due to a negligent discharge by a colleague. He was based in Aldershot and his experience was full on. His medical training set him up for life. He transferred from the RAMC to the Royal Military Police and was immediately posted to Northern Ireland with 176 Provost Comp. At the conclusion of his tour to Northern Ireland he was posted to Colchester to serve 156 Provost Company and the larger-than-life Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard. Having arrived in Colchester he served with Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard and remembers L/Cpl Paul Lon who was killed in action. At the conclusion of his service Mick joined Hertfordshire Police and served in Hitchin and the regime was very structured and standards were very important to him and the rest of the team. During a fit of peak Mick walked away from the job and went travelling !Having run out of money he returned to the UK and whilst driving through Hertfordshire he decided to call into the headquarters and ask for his old job back. Unbelievably they took him back into the fold. Mick thrived on proactive operations and formed a relationship with members of the British Transport Police whilst conducting operations at the local train stations. He transferred to the BTP and started at Kings Cross. As an officer Mick was one of many who dealt people who died by suicide. He recounts a tragic time in Cyprus when he was called to a head on RTC where the occupants of the vehicles were seriously injured and resulted in fatalities. He felt that he had failed at the scene( which he hadn't). and was advised that he was too emotionally attached to the incident. This advice assisted through his career until the emotional baggage became too overwhelming.Mick was having issues in the workplace that meant he went off sick. He found the senior management of BTP and Occupational Health as being underwhelming. He was accused of working outside of the job and the bullying tactics got the better of him. Mick has now retired and undertakes medical training including FREC 3 training and would welcome a meeting with the senior management from BTP Hosted on Acast.

Jay Rayner and his panel of chefs, cooks and writers are in the army town of Aldershot answering questions from a crowd of eager home cooks. Jay is joined by specialist in Mauritian food, Shelina Permaloo, materials expert Dr Zoe Laughlin and chefs Sophie Wright and James "Jocky" Petrie. The panellists put their minds to an array of cookery concerns, including things to do with blackberries, the best way to give flavour to calamari, and the crucial debate - does oven temperature really matter? Inspired by Aldershot's monument to the Duke of Wellington, the panel also discusses the multi-step method behind the perfect beef wellington and how to avoid a soggy bottom. Jay stops to chat to TV presenter and member of the British Army Reserve, Jimmy de Ville who reveals the most inventive modes of cooking while on army duty, what an army lunch may consist of, and the key elements of military ration packs.

It's coming up to two years since Russia's so-called ‘special operation' against Ukraine led to one of the biggest conflicts on European soil since the end of WW2. Shocking as that was, it's been followed by yet more global insecurity. In the Middle East, the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues; meanwhile, some commentators look nervously at China's threatening position towards Taiwan. At home in Britain there have been dire warnings that we are living in a ‘pre-war era'; and further afield, the Doomsday Clock has been set to merely 90 seconds before midnight and a nuclear holocaust. For people of faith, making sense of the human propensity for violence has always been challenging. How can we justify pacificism in the face of evil? And contrariwise, how can we justify warfare when we claim to follow the command of Christ to love our enemies? And what does horrendous warfare do to your faith in God and in humanity?Rosa Hunt talks to four people who have had to think through some of these issues in great depth. In Lviv, Ukraine, Rev. Roman Zaviysky, who's dean of the faculty of theology at the Catholic University; In Princetown, Ukrainian theologian Pavlo Smytsnyuk reflects on how life has changed over the last two years. In Israel Elena Volkova – originally from Russia and now an independent scholar after leaving her mother country - offers her perspective. And in Aldershot, retired soldier and lay minister Major General Tim Cross, who served during the Cold War and during peace keeping operations in the Balkans, offers his perspective.
