Trusted Across Three Reigns: Sir William Fitzwilliam's Tudor Career

On this day in Tudor history, 3 October 1559, Sir William Fitzwilliam, gentleman of Prince Edward's privy chamber, MP, court insider, and later deputy chancellor in Ireland under Mary I, died and was honoured with burial in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. He was one of those capable, steady figures who moved quietly through the Henrician, Edwardian, and Marian courts, and kept being trusted. Who was he? Born to a family steeped in royal service. Gray's Inn training - legal polish for a life in administration. Household service to Sir William Fitzwilliam, later Earl of Southampton MP for Guildford (1542), New Shoreham (1547), Berkshire (1553, 1559). At court: to Prince Edward's privy chamber (1544), rising to chief gentleman (1545); trusted by Somerset and Northumberland. Knighted and made Lieutenant of Windsor Castle & Keeper of Windsor Great Park by 1552. Under Mary I: dispatched to Ireland, on the council; deputy chancellor (1555); exposed misconduct by Sir Anthony Leger; rewarded with a 21-year lease of Donaghmore. Quick note: he's not the later Elizabethan Lord Deputy with the same name. Why he matters: a Dublin-born second son who, through competence, discretion, and flexibility, became a trusted royal servant across three reigns - from household retainer to the prince's inner circle and high Irish office. If you enjoy meeting the Tudors' unsung power-brokers, please like, subscribe, and ring the bell for daily “On This Day” history.   #OTD #SirWilliamFitzwilliam #EdwardVI #MaryI #StGeorgesChapel #TudorCourt #PrivyChamber #GraysInn #OrderOfTheGarter #IrishHistory #Baggotrath #WindsorGreatPark #Henrician

Is leopard print the new Breton top? What should you wear if you want to avoid "Mum Bum"? And what is the one thing you should always bring to a festival? Answering these questions is the amazing Zoe de Pass, aka Dress Like a Mum! We interviewed Zoe live on stage at this year's Big Feastival. As she's a style icon we chatted about fashion, of course, and invited her to pass judgment on some of our favourite outfits past and present. We also talked about the brilliant ski trips Zoe runs and shared some amazing stories involving incontinence, nudity, and infidelity. And that's before we even got to the Scummy Mummy Confessions - tune in to hear some of the terrible tales our audience revealed at our Feastival show, and a few of our own. In this episode of The Smart Property Investment Show, journalist Emilie Lauer sits down with PRD chief economist Dr Diaswati (Asti) Mardiasmo to unpack the current state of Australia's property market and spotlight the most affordable, liveable suburbs. The duo starts the episode by exploring the market's response to the previous interest rate cuts and how they've impacted demand, supply, and property prices. Asti said that while the first cut had minimal effect, the second led to a modest rise in auction clearance rates, building momentum for future cuts. The duo then turns to PRD's latest report, identifying affordable suburbs within 20 kilometres of the capital city CBDs. Asti said affordable suburbs are defined as those below capital city median prices but still offer strong liveability, based on factors like low crime, access to infrastructure, and new housing supply. The report also considers rental yields, appealing to both owner-occupiers and investors. In Sydney, suburbs like Guildford and Punchbowl stand out, while Melbourne offers more affordable options in areas such as St Albans and Maribyrnong. While units remain more affordable than houses, Asti noted that the price gap has narrowed, signalling growth potential across both asset types. The film centers on Craig, a socially awkward marketing executive who yearns to be friends with his new neighbor Austin, a charismatic but unfulfilled weatherman. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, as part of the festival's Midnight Madness program. It was theatrically released in the United States by A24 in limited release on May 9, 2025, before opening wide on May 23. We then review 'Suzanne's Fugue' (La fugue de Suzanne), a 1974 Jean-Marie Buchet directed film - "Suzanne has had enough of her boyfriend Albert. The drama unfolds in fifteen tableaux, in which she goes over to Albert's friend Emile. Still, these romantic worries go hand in hand with insatiable boredom."Lastly, we talk 'In the Name of the Father'a 1993 biographical crime drama film co-written and directed by Jim Sheridan. It is based on the true story of the Guildford Four, four people falsely convicted of the 1974 Guildford pub bombings that killed four off-duty British soldiers and a civilian. The screenplay was adapted by Terry George and Jim Sheridan from the 1990 autobiography Proved Innocent: The Story of Gerry Conlon of the Guildford Four by Gerry Conlon.Unajoy YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@unajoyRosa's

It's The British Broadcasting Century's century! Thanks if you've joined us for the story so far, from Morse and Marconi to Reith and the Pips (before Gladys Knight took over lead vocals). This special 100th episode is for both the newcomer and the seasoned veteran - being the previous 99 episodes in summary form, BUT with lots of new bits. So this is no best-of... (alright it's a bit of a best-of) ...this is packed with new things we didn't know, old things we hadn't found yet, new perspectives on the areas we've covered previously, things we left out completely, and much more, or less, depending on how you look at it. New things include: The first song Marconi played via wireless (thanks John Hannon) New (corrected!) info on Marconi's first sports report by wireless - not 1899 in America, but 1898 in Ireland... Long clips of Britain's first DJ Gertrude Donisthorpe, Marconi engineer William Ditcham, first broadcast singer Winifred Sayer, Marconi man R.D. Bangay, and more, that we haven't played you before. News on the Melba recording (er, not good news) A 6min-long never-before-heard reminiscence by Arthur Burrows, reflecting on the first BBC broadcast, with new info - including the 2LO orchestra being accused of electoral bias because of their song choice. The first accusation of BBC on-air bias... in musical form! The opening words of the first BBC children's broadcast New info on Harry Tate's 'Broadcasting' sketch (thanks Alan Stafford) The first singer of Cardiff 5WA The Sykes Committee look into the BBC (just to keep the story moving forward, a bit) And we've been asking you for your favourite moments so far. So we re-bring you: Peter Eckersley on 2MT Writtle Tales from 2ZY Manchester and 5IT Birmingham More Peter Eckersley on 2MT Writtle Even more Peter Eckersley on... ...You get the idea. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.theflyingfrisby.comI've had a flood of new readers sign up to the Flying Frisby this week, I'm delighted to report, largely as a result of this article on bitcoin treasury companies and of this video on North Sea oil and the next Labour U-turn, which has been doing the rounds on the net.So welcome everyone. I hope you enjoy the ride.Today's piece is going to be a bit of a hotchpotch, as I gather my thoughts and tidy up a few loose ends. We'll start with the macro. Are we in a bull market? Are the animal spirits back in command? Or have we just gone through a bear market rally? It all depends on tariffs, I guess, and what is going on in the Great Orange Man's mind. What plans does he have? That I cannot answer, but I will say the S&P500 looks like it might have just put in a lower high.We want to be above that blue line.If he goes full tariff again, all bets - well most - are off.But thanks to the Great Orange Man's pronouncements on uranium, our speculation Lightbridge Fuels (NASDAQ:LTBR) is now enjoying another of its spikes. If he goes full tariff again, all bets - well most - are off.But thanks to the Great Orange Man's pronouncements on uranium, our speculation Lightbridge Fuels (NASDAQ:LTBR) is now enjoying another of its spikes.Sell the spikes, buy the dips has been the play here. We are on one such spike now, so if the recent pattern continues (it won't continue forever, nothing does, but it might for a bit) then lighten up between $15 and $20 and buy if it goes back to $9 is the trade.Sell the spikes, buy the dips has been the play here. We are on one such spike now, so if the recent pattern continues (it won't continue forever, nothing does, but it might for a bit) then lighten up between $15 and $20 and buy if it goes back to $9 is the trade. We have quite a well defined, trade-able range emerging here, as defined by the blue lines below.I don't see it going back to the $2.50-$3 area, where we were lucky enough to first stumble upon this stock, but $8.50-9 looks like the new floor. For now.Remember: this was an $800 stock once upon a time, so there is a lot of upside left. One should probably keep some money on the table, in case we don't get the dip.Tell your friends. The next Starmer U-turnTurning next to the issue of the re-opening of the North Sea. Since posting that video our Glorious Leader has tightened ties with the EU, and in particular relevance here, its net zero goals. The UK now commits to net zero obligations “at least as ambitious as the EU”. “Want to get out of net zero?,” says Lord Frost in the Telegraph, “Tough: you can't, unless the EU agrees”.That said I am sure Captain FlipFlop will find a way of flipflopping his way round any North Sea ties and then spinning it. There is a review this week. Surely even this government will realise importing Norwegian gas for (net) zero tax take, fewer jobs and a higher carbon footprint than producing our own makes (net) zero sense. More importantly it is gifting Reform. Maybe the needs of the Treasury mean Milibrain - Miliband gets overruled. We will know more as soon as today.Adding another bitcoin treasury company to my portfolioIn a moment, I am going to take a look at Comstock Lode (NYSE:LODE), further to its AGM this week. I know I keep talking about this company, but it might be the one we all retire on - hence my outsized attention. But first I also want to continue on the bitcoin treasury company story.(Despite the outperformance of the treasury companies of late, I still prefer bitcoin and think it should be a core holding. The treasury companies are rather more speculative. However, given the hassle involved, I understand why some in the UK prefer the treasury companies). How about this for nuts? The UK's Smarter Web Company (ISIN: GB00BPJHZ015) hit a market cap of £175 million yesterday. Its assets: it has about £5 million in bitcoin. The dude who founded it, Andrew Webley, was a month ago running a web design firm in Guildford with net assets of less than £50,000. In the company's Retail Investor IPO document, he committed to invest a minimum of £30,000...through his ISA”. (h/t Glen Goodman)This will not end well. And we have the FCA to thank. It has made it so difficult to buy bitcoin, investors are buying this company and others like it instead. If, like many readers, you are playing this one, make sure you get your original investment out, is my advice …Meanwhile, Metaplanet (3350:TYO) briefly lost a third of its value last week, falling below ¥800. Now it's above ¥1,200, at all-time highs, trading at 450% of the value of its bitcoin. It's a mania all right.I'm adding another position, in a stock which has some recent history of manias. What is it? Ah-ha …

The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). On the day of episode 99's release, it's exactly 100 years since the death on 17 April 1925 of Godfrey Isaacs - Managing Director of the Marconi Company. More than that - new evidence shows that he came up with and championed the idea of the one BBC. For years, the British government (via the Post Office) has been credited with the plan for a singular British broadcaster. But lost meeting minutes have been rediscovered.... The academic who found these minutes - misplaced for decades - is David Prosser of the University of Bristol. He joins us to tell us about the 18 May 1922 meeting where Godfrey Isaacs proposed that the Marconi Company share patents and collaborate with its rivals to form one (British) Broadcasting Company. And Robert Godfrey - Isaacs' great-great-grandson - joins us to give new insights into the life of this under-heralded pioneer in the ways of wireless. Hear tales of the Marconi Scandal, Titanic, business wrangling, broadcasting innovation, battles with the press, and a life cut short. There's a lot to tell, so this is a longer episode than usual - sorry! Actually I'm not sorry... these chaps know their stuff, and it's an incredible tale. . Well how could we not bring you the tale of Marconi setting up a (legal) radio station at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, to broadcast to the Horse Show... only to be closed down a few days later because the government panicked - and especially in the company of the Irish broadcasting historian Eddie Bohan. After Ireland in 1923, we return to Britain in the present-day for an interview with composer David Lowe - the man behind the BBC News theme (as well as The One Show, Grand Designs, Countryfile and more). David's new album of official BBC News themes (and remixes) is available now from Spotify, Apple Music and other places.   SHOWNOTES: David Lowe's album of Official BBC News Themes is on Spotify, Apple Music etc: https://davidlowemusic.com/product/bbc-news-official-themes/ David's website is https://davidlowemusic.com/ Eddie Bohan's book The History of 2BP: Ireland's First Licensed Radio Station is available from https://amzn.to/4jcoVwe Eddie's brilliant blog is at The Irish Broadcasting Hall of Fame: https://ibhof.blogspot.com/ We also mention these episodes: See episode 48 for more on 2BP's earlier role for Daimler's in-car radios at the Glasgow Motor Show in January 1923.
