Welcome to this week's exciting episode of Monday Night Live! Hello everyone, I'm Derek Arden and welcome to another inspiring edition of Monday Night Live.Tonight, we have a truly special guest: Sallie Barker MBE, the current Mayor of Guildford and a lifelong champion of sport, education, inclusion, and community leadership. In this wide-ranging and uplifting conversation, Sallie shares her extraordinary journey — from a PE teacher passionate about climbing mountains to becoming a national leader in sport administration and finally, the Mayor of her beloved community. From the Classroom to National Sport Leadership Sallie's story begins in the world of education, where she taught physical education with a passion for helping young people thrive. Her love of sport, combined with her drive for greater inclusion, led her into sports administration — rising through the ranks quickly over 13 years across three major organizations, including Sport England. At Sport England, Sallie helped organize major international events such as the World Blind Games and World Lacrosse Championships. Her outstanding contributions earned her an MBE from the Queen in 2017. Overcoming Challenges in Major Sporting Events Organizing global events is no easy feat! Sallie discusses the behind-the-scenes challenges: from funding issues to coordinating thousands of athletes and volunteers, to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity. She reflects on how events like the cricket finals at Birmingham during COVID times showcased the power of sport to unite and inspire — even under enormous pressure. Championing Women in Sport and Inclusion One of Sallie's greatest achievements has been her work promoting women in sport. When she first joined the scene, women's sports struggled for recognition, funding, and media coverage. Thanks to pioneers like Sallie, women's teams today — from football to boxing — enjoy unprecedented visibility and support. However, she also discusses ongoing debates around inclusion, especially in areas like transgender participation in sports. Sallie emphasizes the importance of fairness, empirical research, and creating opportunities for everyone, while recognizing the complexity of these evolving conversations. A New Chapter: Becoming Mayor of Guildford After retiring from her professional sports career, Sallie felt the call to public service. At a key council meeting, when no one else stepped forward to become Mayor, Sallie took the leap — and the rest is history. Now, as Mayor of Guildford, she is focused on supporting local charities, tackling isolation and mental health issues, and helping veterans and those affected by dementia. Her passion for community shines through in everything she does. The True Role of a Mayor: Connecting and Supporting Many people don't realize the real day-to-day work of a Mayor. Sallie shares heartwarming stories of visiting charities, supporting isolated individuals, and helping organizations that often struggle for recognition and funding. From leading fundraising events to advocating for vital community causes, Sallie shows how leadership at the local level can make a real, human difference. Honoring Tradition While Embracing Change Sallie also shares memorable moments from receiving her MBE, including the surreal experience of meeting the Queen. She reflects on the importance of keeping traditions alive — while being open to the necessary changes that modern society demands. Balancing the old and the new, she believes, is crucial for keeping communities strong and connected. Final Reflections: Passion, Service, and Looking Ahead Even after a remarkable career, Sallie is not slowing down. Her dedication to service, passion for sport, and love for her community continue to drive her forward. However, she wisely notes the importance of balance, self-care, and not taking on too much — a lesson we can all appreciate!
In this episode, Danny is joined by writer and comedian Paul Kerensa. Paul has written extensively for TV, including Miranda, Top Gear and Not Going Out and has published a number of highly popular books, including several children´s books. He claims to be the only stand-up comic without a naval and has performed in numerous countries. Paul is also the host of The Great British Broadcasting Century podcast, which is all about BBC history. Naturally, because Paul is a bit of a BBC history nerd, this episode is peppered with fascinating insights into the subject. They also discuss the 3 types of gigs Paul does, including lots of church gigs, and his insights into how he adapts his act for these venues include several funny anecdotal stories. KEY TAKEAWAYS The BBC has had a strong influence on British culture e.g. The London-centric, Victorian/Dickensian feel of a traditional Christmas is partly down to them. Bush House, which became the BBC´s home in 1940 was the most expensive building in the world. Comedy is a great way of getting people to think, including about religion. Most churches and cathedrals are better venues than comedy clubs. The BBC was not behind the first radio broadcast in the UK. The birthplace of the microphone is now a Chinese supermarket. What people will laugh at has changed drastically, making modern audiences trickier. The BBC once hosted an evening of mass telepathy. BEST MOMENTS “It´s one of those tours that never ends.” “I couldn’t find a way of saying “oh by the way I go to church” without it killing the room.” “He thought he had to speak the language of comedians to us, which he thought was just swearing.” “People aren’t going to laugh if they feel unsettled.” “There´s a community in Sussex that’s a little bit Amish.” “It´s the only building outside of Israel that has been a church, a synagogue and a mosque.” “I can’t sell one-liners like they do.” “Guildford cathedral is still selling itself for film locations for spiritual battles.” “You go from amateur questioner to procrastinator.” “I´ve got no belly button…I once did a gig where there were three of us, quite rare.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.paulkerensa.com HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. On the day of episode 99's release, it's exactly 100 years since the death on 17 April 1925 of Godfrey Isaacs - Managing Director of the Marconi Company. More than that - new evidence shows that he came up with and championed the idea of the one BBC. For years, the British government (via the Post Office) has been credited with the plan for a singular British broadcaster. But lost meeting minutes have been rediscovered.... The academic who found these minutes - misplaced for decades - is David Prosser of the University of Bristol. He joins us to tell us about the 18 May 1922 meeting where Godfrey Isaacs proposed that the Marconi Company share patents and collaborate with its rivals to form one (British) Broadcasting Company. And Robert Godfrey - Isaacs' great-great-grandson - joins us to give new insights into the life of this under-heralded pioneer in the ways of wireless. Hear tales of the Marconi Scandal, Titanic, business wrangling, broadcasting innovation, battles with the press, and a life cut short. There's a lot to tell, so this is a longer episode than usual - sorry! Actually I'm not sorry... these chaps know their stuff, and it's an incredible tale. . SHOWNOTES: Read David Prosser's article: 'Marconi Proposes: Why it's time to rethink the birth of the BBC' - on the University of Bristol website: https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/193478467/Prosser_Marconi_Proposes_Why_it_s_time_to_rethink_the_birth_of_the_BBC_26_Sep_2018.pdf Original music is by Will Farmer. 14 August 1923: Ireland's first licensed radio station takes to the air... Yes for one episode, The British Broadcasting Century leaves Britain to become The Irish Broadcasting Century. Well how could we not bring you the tale of Marconi setting up a (legal) radio station at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, to broadcast to the Horse Show... only to be closed down a few days later because the government panicked - and especially in the company of the Irish broadcasting historian Eddie Bohan. After Ireland in 1923, we return to Britain in the present-day for an interview with composer David Lowe - the man behind the BBC News theme (as well as The One Show, Grand Designs, Countryfile and more). We delve into the police's psychological tactics and the eventual peaceful surrender of the gunmen. The episode also covers the subsequent trial, where the Balcombe Street Four were held accountable for their crimes, and how their imprisonment became a pivotal issue in the Northern Ireland peace process, leading to their release under the Good Friday Agreement. Love is the foundation of a happy and enduring home. However, a house is not merely the foundation only. On top of that foundation are the walls of trust and commitment. These walls contain within the house such elements (and interior dressings) as fondness and admiration, turning towards each other (not away), maintaining a positive outlook, properly managing conflict, making life dreams come true (together), and creating shared meaning. The challenges faced in marriage, however, are often the result of Marital Myths. The Vapors are a British new wave and power pop band best known for their 1980 hit “Turning Japanese.” Formed in 1978 in Guildford, England, the band was discovered by Bruce Foxton of The Jam, who helped secure them a management deal. With a sound that blended punchy punk energy and melodic hooks, The Vapors quickly gained attention in the UK music scene.Their debut album, New Clear Days (1980), featured “Turning Japanese,” a song that became an international success, particularly in the U.S. and Australia. Though often misinterpreted, the song's catchy riff and emotional intensity made it a defining anthem of the new wave era. The album also included other notable tracks like “News at Ten” and “Waiting for the Weekend.”Despite their early success, the band struggled with commercial momentum, and their second album, Magnets (1981), showcased a darker, more mature sound. Songs like “Jimmie Jones” tackled deeper themes, but the album failed to achieve the same level of popularity. By 1982, The Vapors disbanded, becoming one of many bands from the era known as one-hit wonders. After a decades-long hiatus, The Vapors reunited in 2016, playing live shows and eventually releasing a third album, Together, in 2020. Their legacy remains tied to the energy and innovation of the early new wave movement, with “Turning Japanese” still resonating in pop culture today.

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Patrick MaguirePatrick Maguire was the youngest member of the "Maguire Seven," a group wrongfully convicted in the 1970s for involvement in IRA bombings in Guildford and Woolwich. At just 13 years old, he was arrested alongside his family in December 1974. The Maguire Seven were accused of operating a bomb-making factory from their London home, based on dubious forensic evidence. Patrick was sentenced to four years in prison, during which he endured solitary confinement and significant psychological trauma. The convictions of the Maguire Seven were eventually quashed in 1991, acknowledging the miscarriage of justice they had suffered. In the years following his release, Patrick Maguire turned to art as a means of coping with his experiences. His work often reflects the darkness and confinement he endured during his imprisonment. In 2017, he held an exhibition titled "Out from the Darkness," marking a transition from his earlier, darker pieces to works embracing more colour and light. Additionally, Patrick co-authored a memoir, "My Father's Watch: The Story of a Child Prisoner in 70s Britain," detailing his experiences and the impact of the wrongful convictions on his life and family. Patrick Maguire's story stands as a poignant reminder of the profound personal consequences of miscarriages of justice. This week we're off to Surrey, one of the Home Counties - and a place that is being gobbled up by London year by year!We start by discussing, much to Martin's chagrin, that the 23rd December is actually a Saints Day for about 30 obscure martyrs, recounting just a fraction of who they were and why they mattered. And after that, we dig into the history and folklore of Surrey. We discuss all sorts, including the tiny house where John Donne and his wife lived and had many, many babies, an extremely tall tower built by an Enlightenment-era loon, the heritage and importance of Surrey's heaths and commons, and plenty else, all before Martin digs through culinary history to uncover some... peculiar delicacies... for this week's County Dish.On the folklore front, interspersed with some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with the much-acclaimed folklorist and author Jeremy Harte, we talk about Guildford's unfortunate dragon, Lord Lyttleton's Ghost, Joan Butts The Witch of Ewell, and much more besides. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's rather silly story, which is largely based on the truth, "Captain Salvin and his Flying Pig."We hope you enjoy it, and be sure to check back tomorrow for Eleanor's epic Ghost Story for Christmas Eve!The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This week we welcome the singers Michael Ball and Alfie Boe. Ball and Boe have been singing together for ten years, and are about to release their sixth album, but in this conversation Gyles takes them right back to the beginning. We hear about Alfie's childhood, growing up as the youngest in a family of nine in a council house in the north-west, about how he was discovered as he sang to himself at work as a mechanic, about his first girlfriend and the death of his father. Michael tells Gyles about his unhappy school days, his wild years at drama school in Guildford and the amazing first night of Les Mis at The Barbican. This is a warm, funny and sometimes touching conversation with two great musicians. 'Together at Home', Michael and Alfie's new album, is out now. Their UK arena tour is in March and April 2025, with a date at the O2 on April 13th 2025. Tickets are on sale now at livenation.co.uk. Learn more about your ad choices. Get ready to transform into a ferret and an eagle with Andrew and Presley as they discuss this historical fiction romance fantasy comedy. All our Links: https://linktr.ee/seasononepodSeason Spoiler Synopsis: My Lady Jane is a 2024 Amazon Prime original series set in a fictionalized 16th-century England that follows Lady Jane Grey, a fiercely independent, well-read woman who is coerced into marrying Lord Guildford Dudley. Begrudgingly Jane marries Guildford who she later discovers is an Ethian, a human who can take animal form. Guildford struggles with his Ethianism, as he is unable to control his ability to change and unwillingly changes into a horse when the sun rises, and is freed from animal form when the sun sets. Jane is cousin to King Edward VI, who is first believed to be gravely ill and names Jane as successor to his throne. Princess Mary and Lord Seymour have been secretly poisoning Edward in order to kill him and place Mary in power. Mary and Seymour ramp up their plot to kill Edward which leads Edward to fall from a high window in a tower of the castle, and his disappearance. Mary and Seymour forge a will and attempt to make the court believe that will is legitimate, which names Mary as successor. The real will, which was taken by Princess Bess for safe-keeping, is given to one of the castle staff and is presented in court. The original will wins out due to the official stamp of the king sealing it. Jane is named Queen and discovers that Mary and Seymour colluded to murder Edward, leading to Mary attacking Jane and destroying proof of this truth. Edward comes to in a church realizing he was saved by Lady Margaret Beaufort, his great-grandmother. Edward is informed that he is one of a long line of Ethian English kings, and that Margaret aims to help him discover his animal form. Margaret wishes to make Edward an Ethian king who will exterminate all non-Ethians. Meanwhile Jane, newly queen, makes a declaration that division law will be terminated, and humans and Ethians will live in peace. This disturbs the nobility in England, who all leave and take their armies with them. Mary and Seymour gather support with the nobility to revert the pro-Ethian policy in the kingdom, and arrive to put Jane in chains. Mary and Seymour also catch Guildford and expose his secret, which means that both Jane and Guildford would be sentenced to death for being nobile and Ethian. At Jane and Guildford's execution, the Ethians come to their rescue, after being inspired and rallied by Edward to help restore him to the throne to rule for them in addition to humans. Jane and Guildford escape, but not before Jane leaps over the crowd and up to where Guildford is tied up. As the fire rises to consume them, Jane professes her love for Guildford, Guildford professes his love for Jane, and then makes himself a horse to break free from his ropes and carry Jane to safety. At the end, Jane and Guildford are seen embracing each other, discussing what to do next, Mary is still ruling England, and Princess Bess is secretly an Ethian.

What's the best thing to say to someone who's in mourning? Is the second year of grief really the hardest? And who was the lead singer of Westlife? Helping us answer all these questions is the amazing Stacey Heale! She tells us what it was like to lose her husband, Greg, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer on their daughter's first birthday. Stacey explains what life is like now, nearly three years after his death. We discuss Widow's Fire - the phenomenon of bereaved people who turn to sex for comfort. Plus, the best and worst ways to help someone you love through the grieving process. It all sounds a bit dark, doesn't it? But honestly, we have loads of laughs along the way. We also take a deep dive into the live advice of Ireland's greatest philosopher-king, Ronan Keating, and discover Helen knows nothing about boy bands. We finish with some Scummy Mummy Confessions involving wee and a close encounter with a member of Bros. Stacey's brilliant book, Now is Not the Time for Flowers, is out now. This special bonus episode was recorded on Saturday 6 July, just two days after the general election. We got to interview Jess Phillips MP in front of a live audience at the Birmingham MAC, and she was brilliant. We covered loads of topics including Jess's work in the areas of women's rights and domestic violence, what she wants the new Labour government to prioritise, and what she thinks of Starmer's cabinet appointments. We also talk about the abuse suffered by Jess and her staff in the run-up to the election, and why she thinks it was the worst campaign she's ever been involved in. Plus: fancying Stanley Tucci, why becoming an MP is like joining the NCT, and parliamentary hairdressers - do Tories have better hair? After all that we had some questions from the audience that were so brilliant we ran out of time (forgot) to do the Scummy Mummy Confessions. But if that's your favourite bit of the show, have no fear - we have something special coming soon. Make sure you're subscribed to the podcast so you don't miss out. Huge thanks to Jess Phillips, and a massive thank you to the Birmingham MAC for having us. If you're round that way do check out their Motherhood Season - there are loads of amazing talks, exhibitions, workshops and more running right through September. *WE ARE ON TOUR!* We have one more show this summer, in Sevenoaks on 19 July.
