Now WAIT—I know what you're thinking… finance is probably your least favorite “F” word too. But when it comes to family planning and fertility treatments, it's an important piece of the puzzle. We've talked about the emotional side of fertility struggles and IVF on the show before, but today we're pulling back the curtain on the financial reality. Because let's be honest—things like IVF, egg freezing, and other treatments can be really expensive. And to make matters more complicated, insurance doesn't always cover them. So what are we supposed to do? This week, Claire Tomkins, CEO & Founder of Future Family (and mom of three via IVF) joins the show. After six rounds of IVF (and over $100K) to conceive her first child, she became passionate about making fertility care more accessible and founded Future Family to help others navigate the process. In this episode, we cover: ✨ The real costs behind IVF, egg freezing, and other common fertility treatments ✨ Creative ways to make treatments more financially manageable ✨ The role of insurance and what to look out for in your benefits ✨ Claire's personal advice for anyone thinking about or currently going through the process If you or someone you love is exploring fertility treatments, this episode is a must-listen! 91% of Women Hate Their Bodies - And Here's How We Change That

Here's the truth: 91% of women hate their bodies. Ninety-one percent. And if you're a mom? The research says postpartum makes it worse for 70% of us. No wonder so many of us look in the mirror and instantly spiral. It's not just about how we look - it's about our confidence, our joy, how we show up in our relationships, and yes, how we parent our kids. In this episode, we're getting brutally honest. From growing up in the Kate Moss “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” era, to disordered eating, to postpartum bodies that feel like total strangers, to the comments from strangers on the internet that can wreck your whole day (fuck Jeff) — we're unpacking all of it.But this isn't just a vent session. This is about breaking cycles. We're talking about the tiny shifts that change everything: How to stop trash-talking your body, how to practice gratitude for the skin you're in (even when it's hard), how to have REAL body neutrality, and how to raise kids who don't spend decades hating themselves the way so many of us did. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel so damn seen. And you'll walk away with the fire to finally say: My body is not the problem. It's my home, my power, and my story. This episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. 227: Bathroom emergencies

What Was That Like

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2025 66:00

Quite a few of the episodes here on What Was That Like involve emergencies. Today we're talking about a different kind of emergency.   If you're new to the podcast, this is definitely not a typical episode. You might want to look through some of the past episode titles and pick one out that looks interesting.   But today is a little different. I'm in Dallas this week, hanging out with a bunch of my podcasting friends, so for this episode we're kind of taking a break from the normal interview format.   A little bit of background. About 10 years ago, I was creating and hosting a different podcast. It was called Ultrafinishers. Each episode, I would interview a runner who had just finished their first ultramarathon. An ultramarathon is any race longer than a marathon, which is 26.2 miles. So an ultra usually ranges from 50k, which is a little more than 30 miles, up to 100 miles. Some are even longer than that.   But for one of those episodes, I asked people to call in and tell their story of the nightmare that just about every runner has had to deal with – you're out on a run, and you have to poop, and there's no bathroom in sight. It's not a fun thing when it's happening – but as it turns out, it's pretty entertaining to hear about when it happens to other people.   So you're about to hear a bunch of my ultra running friends from 10 years ago, telling their poop stories. And all of these were called in on a phone line, so the audio quality is not quite what you'd expect on a modern podcast. But it's listenable.   And don't worry – I have lots of crazy What Was That Like stories in the pipeline, and I'm looking forward to bringing those to you in the near future.   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Sometimes, you see a phone call coming in and you just know that something bad has happened.   I remember back several years ago, when my dad was still alive. He was in pretty poor health. He could still walk around, sort of, but it was with a walker, and it was very slowly. I'm the oldest of three sons, and of the three, I live the closest. It's only about a 5 or 6 minute drive for me to get to my parents' place, so if something happened, I'd be the one to get that call. Lots of times my phone would ring, and it would be my mom calling, quite upset and worried, because my dad had fallen and she couldn't get him up.   And you know, when a call comes in the middle of the night, it's almost never going to be good news. We've had a few of those as well.   For my guest today, Bill, life was good. He and his wife had two children – David, in high school, and Kristin, who had just graduated from college and was about to start a career.   But then, Bill got a phone call. It was from a woman who identified herself as a police detective. And she was calling with news about Bill's daughter.   Bill told this story on the podcast a little over 3 years ago, and it's one of the episodes that had a big impact on people. Some of the elements of this story are just incredible. And you'll also hear a recent conversation I had with Bill, about what's happened since then.   If you'd like to contact Bill, you can do that through his website: https://www.whendatinghurts.com/   Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/226   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Are you overwhelmed by the amount of ‘side hustles' being advertised to you on social media? Feel undue pressure to ‘build passive income,' even if you aren't entirely sure what that means, or how to do so? Maybe the siren song of ‘digital assets' and ‘financial freedom' gives you déjà vu—  haven't we heard these buzzwords before? But maybe you're just getting your first taste of the #GirlBoss side of the internet, which is so very wide and full of opportunity, after all. And justttttt maybe, this digital marketing course is the key to your transcendent financial future!…..Yeah, no. This week on Sounds Like a Cult, Reese and Amanda take a scroll through the beige world of the cult of Digital Marketing and all of its malicious tactics, from emojis to emotional manipulation. In the summer months, not only am I the director of our little summer camp program called Hopetown. I'm also the worship leader and worship music chooser for kids in 2nd - 12th grades. And let me tell you, as a therapist for kids for over 30 years, I am very choosy when it comes to the lyrics that these kids sing. They are kids who have known heartache, who have experienced loss of all shapes and sizes, trauma, anxiety, depression, and more. They are kids who have questioned whether God loves them in the midst of their pain. Whether he cares and is still for them and for their families. And so I desperately want the words we sing each night  to be truth. And not just truth that glosses over their heart, but truth that seeps into it and points them toward the one who is in the midst of the heart with them and longs for their healing. There's truly no one I trust more to speak words of life and healing through worship, than the three women who are on our podcast today, and the bands they represent. I am delighted for you to listen to the wisdom of our friends, Sandra McCracken, Leslie Jordan, and Taylor Leonhardt. In this powerful and eye-opening conversation, we sit down with the founders of WeNatal, a company redefining preconception health for both women and men. Together, we dive into the overlooked science of Trimester Zero—the 3 - 4 months before trying to conceive—and why this time frame can be a game-changer for both natural conception and IVF outcomes. From egg and sperm quality to the role of mitochondria, epigenetics, and environmental toxins, this episode breaks down the science, dispels myths, and provides tangible, realistic steps you can take to optimize your fertility—without the stress of perfectionism. We also unpack why the conversation around fertility needs to shift from being a “women's health” issue to a team sport. *** About the WeNatal Founders: After experiencing heartbreaking miscarriages just one week apart, best friends Vida and Ronit were devastated—and confused. Both healthy, taking standard prenatal vitamins, and yet with no answers from their doctors beyond “it's random” or “it's your age,” they began digging deeper. In their search, they uncovered a glaring gap in the conversation: the male partner's health. Half the equation was being left out entirely. Determined to change the fertility journey for themselves and others, they poured over the research, worked with leading experts, and developed a science-backed prenatal system for both women and men. What started as a deeply personal mission has now grown into WeNatal, a movement to empower couples with the knowledge, tools, and products to support conception, pregnancy, and the lifelong health of future generations. *** Subscribe to The Neuro Experience for more conversations at the intersection of brain science and performance. A Pep Talk for Reading the Whole Bible :: Tara-Leigh Cobble [Summer of Mentorship wk 5]

Have you read the whole Bible? That was the question my guest Tara-Leigh Cobble struggled to answer while talking to a pastor friend. As she thought back through her life growing up in a Christian home, being involved in church and now working in full-time ministry, she couldn't say for sure that she'd really read ALL of the Bible.  So she started a chronological reading plan to read it all, even the genealogies. But as she read, Tara had to wrestle with stories she'd never heard from the pulpit.   “I was questioning the Bible because I was reading the Bible and I was questioning not is this true, but is he good? Yeah. Do I like him? My mentor said the places where you have difficulty with God lean in because the good stuff is on the other side of this. The good stuff is on the other side of this struggle.” After completing her own journey of reading the full Bible and seeing scripture and God in a new way, Tara-Leigh created The Bible Recap podcast and book to help others encounter God through his Word. And she's here to give us a pep talk for reading the full Bible too.  “You behold the living God in scripture, and all of a sudden, instead of feeling burdened by your to-do list, you're going to be buoyed and carried along by the love of the God of the universe and by the person of who he is. And that's what I want you to take away from scripture every day, a vision of the God who loves you and who has already accomplished all that he requires of you.” Summer of Mentorship Discussion questions PDF  Connect with Tara-Leigh:  Website:  www.taraleighcobble.com  The Bible Recap: www.thebiblerecap.com  Instagram: @taraleighcobble  Links Mentioned:   The Bible Recap: A One-Year Guide to Reading and Understanding the Entire Bible Listen to the Bible on YouVersion Featured Sponsors:  Thrive Market: Go to ThriveMarket.com/DMA and start saving today. Hey yall! In this episode, I'm getting real about the pressures we face as women to hit certain milestones by a certain age, getting married, having kids, “settling down”, and how exhausting it is to feel like you're running against a clock. I talk about why life doesn't magically end at 25, why being single can actually be the most empowering time of your life, and why rushing into relationships or marriage just to “keep up” will never make you happy.I also get into the way social media fuels comparison, how people project their own insecurities onto you, and why it's so important to block out the noise so you can actually enjoy where you're at right now. We touch on the realities of parenthood (and why it's not something to take lightly), breaking free from outdated timelines, and fully embracing your individuality.Bottom line: stop letting society convince you you're behind, you're not!! My favorite author is Jack London. His style of writing paints a very vivid picture in my mind. As I read his stories, it feels like I'm right there in the middle of it. One of his most well-known works is titled To Build A Fire. This is the opening paragraph of that story.   Day had dawned cold and gray when the man turned aside from the main Yukon trail. He climbed the high earth-bank where a little-traveled trail led east through the pine forest. It was a high bank, and he paused to breathe at the top. He excused the act to himself by looking at his watch. It was nine o'clock in the morning. There was no sun or promise of sun, although there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day. However, there seemed to be an indescribable darkness over the face of things. That was because the sun was absent from the sky. This fact did not worry the man. He was not alarmed by the lack of sun. It had been days since he had seen the sun.   There's something about the quiet, dark, biting cold of northern Canada that really fascinates me. I've lived in cold climates, but nothing like that. When the outside temperature gets to be well below zero, the constant thought is just what you have to do in order to survive.   My guest today is David. He and his partner in this adventure, Scott, dreamed of spending time in those conditions. But what they encountered just in the first few days had them - from one hour to the next – wondering, what else could go wrong?   Video of David and Scott returning to cabin site in 2014: https://youtu.be/NOuuCS0oAYU   Website about David and Scott's experience: https://paradisecreekcabin.com   David's book, Paradise Creek: A True Story of Adventure and Survival – https://www.amazon.com/Paradise-Creek-Adventure-Canadian-Wilderness-ebook/dp/B08KTXZ4S6/ref=sr_1_1   David's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidrscott/   Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/225   Scott's podcast:  https://notrealart.com/   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Today we're answering the question, “How does nature teach us about the seasons?" I get to talk with my new friend, Rachel G. Jordan. She is a marine biologist and spiritual guide and using the ocean as a lens, she points us to the way God is revealed in biology AND IT IS SO COOL. We're talking about the coral reef, all that we don't know about the ocean, the intelligence of sea creatures, and you're not even ready for the insight she has about Moses crossing the Red Sea. I'm telling you, mind blowing. Rachel has a new book out called If The Ocean Has a Soul, so when this came across my desk you know I was all in. *I also want to note that we had some tech issues in the middle of recording this, so we picked back up on another day because we HAD to finish this conversation* So if you're following along in your TSF Seasons Guidebook, we're on page 83. As always, the guidebook is available for you at anniefdowns.com/seasons.. . . . .
