Listen to today's podcast... Want to live longer? Then smile more. Smiling is contagious. It changes our mood. It fights stress and builds your resiliency. Smiling boosts your immune system. It lowers your blood pressure and blocks pain. Part of National Smile Month is about maintaining good oral health. I just recently went to see my dentist and I didn't have it in me to lie about flossing my teeth. I just don't take the time, especially as life gets busy and rushed. And I am not the only one. Currently, research shows that a significant number of us have taken time off work in the last five years due to poor oral health. Most problems with teeth and gums are preventable with a good daily routine. Furthermore, a quarter of all adults have not visited a dentist in the past two years and a similar number only brush their teeth once a day. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency! Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Smile Month: The Oral Health Foundations recommends that we brush our teeth right before going to bed at night and on at least one other occasion throughout the day with a fluoride toothpaste. We should also cut down on how much sugary food and drinks we have, and how often we have them. And finally, we need to go to see our dentist regularly. Ultimately, the aim is to help us achieve good physical and mental wellbeing by improving our oral health. A smile might be a small gesture, yet it can have a remarkable effect on our state of mind, as well as the emotional happiness of others. Remember, If you like today's wellness tips, let me know. Dr. Carlos Smith, a general dentist and ethicist, is the Associate Dean of Ethics and Community Engagement and an Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Public Health and Policy at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. His work focuses on professional identity formation, dental ethics, and oral health justice. In this episode, Dr. Smith discusses his unique path blending dentistry, theology, and bioethics. He begins by discussing the importance of seeing other Black health professionals in his community and observing the professional contentment of dentists while exploring career options. He also cites the crucial piece of advice of one mentor who encouraged him to see the paths of dental school and seminary as not an either/or, but a both/and. Dr. Smith encourages us to think about some of the basic principles in bioethics – beneficence and maleficence – with a broader lens. For example, he talks about the professional duty to understand the reality of racism of all forms in order to think about harms and benefits more systematically and wholistically. He also pushes the envelope on the long-standing medical ethical imperative to place patients' interests above physicians' interests by pointing out that the political interests of patients should also be placed above the political interests of health professionals in order to uphold that principle with integrity and trustworthiness. Dr. Carlos provides some clear-headed definitions of diversity and equity and engages with Kirk and Amelia on a must-listen discussion of the ethical dilemmas institutions are facing regarding the precise use of language in this political climate and the critical need to engage with communities and to advocate during these times. Learn more about how their advocacy, philanthropy, research, and education are creating a better oral health system at carequest.org/turnonthelights What if the path to better health and stronger communities doesn't start in hospitals, but in our relationships with each other? In this episode, Dr. Eric Reinhart, a political anthropologist, social psychiatrist, and psychoanalytic clinician based in Chicago, reflects on how his experiences in medicine, anthropology, and advocacy have shaped his urgent focus on public health reform, especially around mass incarceration and its devastating effects on communities. He argues that incarceration is not only a symptom but also a cause of widespread mental illness and social breakdown, emphasizing the need to democratize caregiving and public health beyond bureaucratic systems. Reinhart critiques the U.S. health care model for being overly medicalized and profit-driven, calling for a bottom-up approach that empowers communities to care for one another. He warns against relying on political self-correction, stressing that meaningful change requires validating public anger and offering materially supported, ethical alternatives rooted in relational care. Drawing from models like Paul Farmer's work and his own experiences in underserved communities, Reinhart envisions a public health system built on mutual aid, participation, and dignity. Tune in as Dr. Eric Reinhart challenges us to rethink public health by examining how systems of incarceration and inequality undermine care and what we can do to build something better! Story at-a-glance Women with chronic migraines and body-wide pain were far more likely to have poor oral health, with over half falling into the lowest oral health categories in a new study Specific oral bacteria, including Mycoplasma salivarium and Gardnerella vaginalis, were significantly more common in women who reported frequent migraines and widespread pain Harmful oral microbes don't stay in your mouth; once gum tissue is inflamed, these bacteria enter your bloodstream, disrupt the immune system, and trigger systemic pain A less diverse oral microbiome was found in women with migraines and gut pain, making it easier for pain-triggering bacteria to dominate and inflame nerve pathways Inflammatory chemicals produced by oral bacteria — like calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) — are directly involved in migraine and fibromyalgia, showing how poor oral hygiene can set off whole-body pain responses
