Dr. Kevin Munger, Assistant Professor and Chair of Computational Social Science in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute, discusses the concept of temporal validity in social media research. Dr. Munger breaks down why thinking about time is an important component of meta-science, particularly when it comes to evaluating the methodologies of social media research. We also discuss the Meta 2020 Election Research partnership, new pathways in social media research, the logic of quantitative description, and the challenges of political communication in the current grant funding and interdisciplinary landscape of political research. Here are the two articles we discuss in the episode: Temporal Validity as Meta-Science (2023)What Did We Learn about Political Communication from the Meta2020 Partnership? (2024)And links to Dr. Munger's latest books:The YouTube Apparatus (2024)The Generation Gap: Why the Baby Boomers Still Dominate American Politics and Culture (2022)
This week, we look into the murky ethics of media leaks and their growing role in shaping political, corporate, and cultural narratives. From leaked peace plans that spark international diplomacy to budget details released minutes before parliamentary debate, we dissect whether leaks are ethical whistleblowing or manipulative PR tactics. Farzana argues that leaks often reveal broken internal cultures, while Doug, from a journalistic perspective, explores how leaks are used to test narratives and steer public perception. Also in this episode, David wonders if written reports are becoming relics in a world obsessed with video and visual storytelling. And we ask: Can AI help restore strategic thinking in PR? And should public relations finally be regulated like other professions? Watch/Listen For1:45 How will AI reshape PR, tactically or strategically?5:36 Should PR be regulated like law or finance?9:28 Are media leaks ethical, or just PR strategy?14:33 Can visual storytelling replace traditional comms?22:04 Are algorithms killing media access for everyone? The Week Unspun is a weekly livestream every Friday at 10am ET/3pm BT. The Truth:Creative power is nebulous, making it hard to measure, but it is trained in the same way as physical strength.Your skill level as a producer is moving right now. The question is: which direction?Your skills are either growing or decaying---change is constant. Your development is a dynamic consequence of your decisions.Up close, progress may seem invisible. That's an illusion of perspective. Growth is happening even when you can't point to it in a given moment. The key is to trust that consistent, intentional work produces results---whether you feel them today or not.Creative Strength TrainingStrength---physical or creative---is your capacity to do it when you don't feel like it. It means doing what you said you were going to do. In the gym, that means showing up and doing your workout. In the studio, it means showing up consistently, working through doubt, and carrying ideas to completion. The version of you that goes to the gym will be stronger than the version that doesn't. How much stronger depends on: the consistency of your workouts (refer to Frequency) and the quality of design in alignment with your goals (see The Piñata Method). The same holds true in the studio---consistency and intentional practice generate creative power. The Session Doesn't Count. The Streak Does. What we can lift today versus a year from now has less to do with what we accomplish in one session and everything to do with how many sessions we are able to link together. This is easy to forget if we don't feel ourselves getting stronger moment to moment. From one day or week to the next you may find that you are lifting the same weight, maybe even a little less. There's a recency bias inherent in this natural desire for fast results. We can't remember what it felt like a year ago, but we recognize that compared to yesterday, I'm not lifting any more than I did. The key here is to zoom out. And the longer the recorded history, the more we are able to see. The more we show up on a daily basis, the more recorded history we have in the future. Temperature doesn't increase every single day, but overall the planet is warmer. As you execute your strength training program according to a schedule aligned with your goals you will notice that it grows in a similar way.Trust the PracticeWe cannot control the rate of growth, but growth is inevitable when we are committed to the plan. If someone were to tell you that they are going to the gym five days a week and are expecting to be stronger a year from now, you wouldn't question that assumption. How is creative strength any different?Embracing this is powerful because when we understand that growth is happening, we can commit ourselves to the underlying practice.“But What About...?”Talent. I love this idea from Jerry Seinfeld: talent is like being gifted a thoroughbred horse. It's fast and powerful, but you have to learn to ride it. Unapplied and untrained talent will atrophy over time. Talent is a gift. Training is a choice. Regardless of how much talent you perceive yourself to have or lack, developing skill is your decision.Decay. If we can grow, we can shrink. In the never-ending quest for growth and improvement, it is easy to take what we have for granted. But, what we have gained is not retained if not maintained. If you miss a day or two at the gym, you probably won't notice much of a change. But extend this to a week, a month, or even a year and it becomes obvious. The perspective of decline and deterioration is equally powerful in its reminder that our ability is not a static trait.Plateaus. The paradox of skill development: the more skilled you become, the harder it is to improve. That said, plateaus aren't dead ends, they are firm ground for forward motion. They are platforms to internalize what you learn until it becomes automatic, generating momentum to carry you to the next level. With accumulated experience, you can refine your goals and adjust how you train. The plateau isn't where growth stops---it's where your next climb begins.Making bad music. No matter how much your skill level grows, you're not immune to making bad music. The music we share is always our “best of.” The most direct path to making good music is to make music often. Most of what you make will be bad---that's not a problem, that's the process that leads to your best work.As you head to the studio, start tracking one simple metric: How many sessions can you link together? Experimenting, sketching, finishing---they all count. The decisions are within your control. The outcomes will reveal themselves over time. Nothing is static---especially when it feels like it is. Show up. You are getting stronger even when you can't feel it. Get full access to ProducerHead at producerhead.substack.com/subscribe

The Hogwarts Professor comment threads have been jumping so Nick Jeffery and John Granger decided to dedicate a conversation to a review of the Greatest Hits in the last week (to do a complete review yourself, click on ‘Activity' in the left margin of the Hogwarts Professor Substack home page). After their reviewing the remarkably global and growing audience of Rowling Readers — 36 countries, 46 states! — and tracking The Presence's location — her yacht seems to be in Fiji but she is touring Levesden Studios? — Nick and John read out fifteen comment subjects and discuss the merits, deficiencies, and promise of each. The lede story is the theory shared by Jaclyn Hayes that Cormoran Strike and the late Charlotte Campbell were half-siblings with Jonny Rokeby in common as their absentee father. From her notes: I think Charlotte was blackmailed (via threat of exposing the relatedness btw her and Cormoran) into marrying Jago to provide him a male heir. Perhaps their relatedness is even an open secret in Charlotte's family, similar to the “secret” relatedness of Decima and Rupert in THM (another parallel). Charlotte was forbidden from telling Cormoran about the blackmail, but since she's conniving and obsessed with him, she uses their unexpected encounter at the Paralympics gala to drop hints about her predicament, hoping he'll solve the mystery and save her or take her back once she's fulfilled the terms of her marriage/birth agreement with Jago. She then orchestrates another encounter with Cormoran to drop more hints-- this time at Franco's, which she knows will trigger the memory of her father's outrage at seeing her and Cormoran dating again. She hopes Cormoran will realize her father was angry because he knew they were related, not simply because he thinks Cormoran wasn't good enough for her. She then tells Coromoran things would be different if he'd taken the job her father offered him (calling to mind the job Tara gives Rupert to keep him quiet in THM), and says she found out she was pregnant at Tara's house and later “lost” (not aborted) the baby. Read the whole thing. Ed Shardlow's response, in which he points out that the hallmark given to silver and DNA testing of human beings have a lot in common, and Tamspells and Jaclyn Hayes discussion of Strike's dreams in previous books give the Strike:Charlotte::Rupert:Decima theory some heft. Cheryl Rose Orrocks asked for help with research she is doing on a possible divine marker, mythologically divine at least, being placed in each book at the appearance of that novel's killer. The only holes in her theory at the time Nick and John recorded their conversation were Troubled Blood and Running Grave — and Catherine has since posted a neat solution for Strike 5. Check that out and please share the missing god or goddess from Running Grave!Nick and John also review and discuss:* Ed Shardlow's idea that the characters creating narratives inside Rowling-Galbraith stories are perhaps best understood as creating their stories as Rowling writes hers, i.e., inspired by Lake material and crafted with the tools in their Sheds;* Vicky's thank you to Dr Fimi for the Ursula Le Guin quotation;* Ed Shardlow's ‘RL Mystery' with back-up from Tamspells and J. S. Maleksen;* Cheryl Rose Orrocks' YouTube notes about the Dirty Bomb Theory conversation (and just how wrong John is about Carmen the opera and Carmen Ellacott); and* Answers to listener requests for more information — all of which can be found in the Links section below! In the week to come, John pledges to post his Hallmarked Man Names exegesis, Nick is working on his review of Aurora Leigh, the supposed template of Ink Black Heart (and the only book ever confirmed by Rowling as such), they will record their Part Two ring charting this weekend, and John is reorganizing his 2017 seven week online course — Wizard Reading Formula — for which class Paid Subscribers will get a greater than 50% discount.John and Nick thank everyone listening and especially those active on the comment threads and taking part in the Hallmarked Man Ring Reading Workshop!Links to Subjects Discussed in the Conversation Above:Cheryl Rose Orrocks: Can you let me know the title and author of the book about Gothic elements? The one John used for Harry Potter's Bookshelf was Patterns of fear in the Gothic novel, 1790-1830 by Ann Tracy, now only ‘in print' via a Kindle version.John read from his much longer Harry Meets Hamlet and Scrooge: Harry Potter's Hogwarts Adventures as the Gateway to English Literature in the conversation above, in which the list of subjects is spelled out (e.g., the castle, supernatural atmosphere, horror, isolation, subterranean passages, fragmentation and reunion, prophecy, ancestral curse, tainted blood, bond of blood, graveyard, corpses, Decay of Aristocratic Privilege, Rise of Bourgeoisie, forest, memories, dreams, found book, doppelgangers, scar or tell-tale mark, mysterious stranger, confused origin, night, mist and fog, distant past, death,, etc.).John also recommends The Handbook of Gothic Literature, ed. Marie Mulvy-Roberts, and The Cambridge Companion to Gothic Fiction, ed. Jerrold Hogle.Who is the mystery writer John was talking about who killed a women when she was an adolescent?Anne Perry, author of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt and William Monk series of historical detective fiction. John recommends Anne Perry and the Murder of the Century, the book written by the journalist who out'd Perry as a convicted murderer writing murder mysteries. Perry died in 2023. J. S. Maleksen I too enjoyed this post, immensely. Can someone recommend a version of Cupid and Psyche and other relevant works of mythology for a Striker who assiduously avoided mythology through seven years of post-secondary education. I'm willing to gut it out in order to understand Rowling's work. TIA.John shared his favorites in the conversation above — Hamilton's Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, Graves' The Greek Myths, Powell's Classical Myth, and Schwab's Gods and Heroes: Myths and Epics of Ancient Greece but Dr Dimitra Fimi responded in the thread today:It's a really difficult question this, and yet it shouldn't be. But the truth is that there is no contemporary authoritative collection of Greek/Classical mythological retellings that's up-to-date with recent scholarship, etc. Catherine recommends Hamilton's book below, which is still good in many respects, but these earlier compilations (like Bulfinch's too) often synthesize different versions of mythological narratives, and omit some interesting variations. My recommendations are a bit heavier on the scholarly side of things, but still readable (the issue will be getting hold of them, but I provide links where possible):1) Classical Myth by Barry B. Powell - as implied by the astronomical price on Amazon.uk (https://amzn.to/3JYkLfF) this is mostly available second-hand now, but there is a scanned version via Archive.org: https://archive.org/details/classicalmyth0000powe (you'll need to create a free account, but once you do you can log in and borrow the book digitally to read)2) Early Greek Myth: A Guide to Literary and Artistic Sources (2 Volumes) by Timothy Gantz is great, and at least easier to get hold of. It gives the tales and their versions as well as an overview of their sources. The Amazon price of Vol. 1, for example, is a bit more accessible: https://amzn.to/4oTFKQ1For those interested in the de profundis interpretation of classical myth, see The Door in the Sky: Coomaraswamy on Myth and Meaning and Symbolism in Greek Mythology by Paul Diel. You can find the post about Beedle the Bard that Dr Fimi discussed in her conversation with Nick and John at her Substack, ‘A Kind of Elvish Craft:' “You must've heard of Babbitty Rabbitty!”: Secondary World Fairy Tales in J.K. Every time you think you've reached the core of their corruption—boom—another layer. It's like peeling an onion that regenerates itself, each skin slicker and slimier than the last. And as these new layers come off, Democrats finally feel the tears.Leftism isn't complex—it just pretends to be. Peel the outer layer, and you find the next lie underneath. The Left talks about “complex systems,” “nuanced governance,” and “layers of truth.” But strip away the jargon, and what you find isn't nuance—it's rot. Decay wrapped in deceit.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Today on Joe Oltmann Untamed, we expose the deep rot within America's institutions, from the ongoing government shutdown and the betrayal of the American people to the weaponization of foreign aid programs against U.S. sovereignty. President Trump's recent pardons of Republican operatives—including Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Mark Meadows, and others—highlight a justice system at odds with fairness and truth, while the saga of Tina Peters and the JAN 6 pipe bomber underscores the corruption and selective enforcement plaguing the DOJ and FBI. With Senate action bringing the 40-day government shutdown closer to resolution, the nation watches as political maneuvering continues to override accountability.Dr. William J. Federer joins to reveal how socialist ideologies have infiltrated U.S. institutions over the past century, from universities to media to government, exploiting cultural and moral decay to consolidate power. He connects America's shift from religious tolerance to hostility against foundational Christian values with the rise of state-controlled narratives, the dismantling of the nuclear family, and the broader attacks on free speech. Through historical insight and biblical principles, Federer outlines the urgent battles Americans face in education, elections, and economics, offering a roadmap to reclaim liberty and restore the moral fabric of the Republic. The program also examines societal decay in real time, from the Olympics banning transgender athletes from female events to liberal policies enabling crime and fraud, all while special-interest groups exploit crises like COVID and immigration for personal gain. The show culminates in a hard-hitting exposé of domestic “color revolution” tactics, targeting the downfall of America. Viewers are called to action: demand justice, prosecute those plotting sedition, and hold every enabler accountable. Joe Oltmann Untamed is your front-row seat to the fight for America—and the roadmap for how citizens can take a stand before it's too late.

Continuing on "Directions for Decomposition" from A Short History of Decay (1949). What is it that humans are inevitably trying to avoid that seems so bad to us? It's our existential separation from others, our essential, incommunicable solitude. Plus, ennui, sloth, and being a "traitor to existence." Get more at partiallyexaminedlife.com. The Failure of the Hittite Empire: Plague, Poor Leadership, and Destruction AUTHOR NAME: Eric Cline BOOK TITLE: After 1177 BC, The Survival of Civilizations; 1177 BC, the year civilization collapsed The Hittite Empire failed due to internal decay, including a plague that ravaged the royal family and subsequent poor leadership. Their capital, Hattusa, was attacked and burned, possibly by the Kashka. Although the main empire vanished, rump states like Carchemish in North Syria survived as Neo-Hittites. These resilient trading centers, however, were continuously forced to pay tribute to aggressive Neo-Assyrian kings like Shalmaneser III after battles such as Qarqar in 853 BC.
The Vulnerability of Mycenaeans and Minoans: Internal Decay and Collapse AUTHOR NAME: Eric Cline BOOK TITLE: After 1177 BC, The Survival of Civilizations The Minoans and Mycenaeans are considered examples of societies that failed to survive the catastrophe. Though seemingly vibrant, they may have been vulnerable and rotted internally, collapsing when stressors hit, possibly due to overextension on ambitious construction projects. Writing from the era (Linear B) is purely administrative, providing no records of the reasons for their demise or leadership quality. Their societies vanish completely by the 11th century BC.
The Vulnerability of Mycenaeans and Minoans: Internal Decay and Collapse (Redux) AUTHOR NAME: Eric Cline BOOK TITLE: After 1177 BC, The Survival of Civilizations This discussion reiterates that the Minoans and Mycenaeans exemplify societies that did not survive the Bronze Age collapse, ranking them low on resilience. They are thought to have been fragile internally, collapsing under stress, potentially due to overextended ambitious construction projects. Their administrative writing (Linear B) offers no explanations for their demise, but names of their gods continued into the Iron Age.

This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

Tooth sensitivity often signals deeper dental problems like enamel erosion, gum recession, or hidden decay Everyday habits such as drinking acidic beverages, brushing too hard, or using harsh whitening products strip away your teeth's natural protection and expose nerves Natural alternatives like zinc, black seed oil, and coconut oil soothe pain, reduce gum inflammation, and strengthen oral tissues without relying on fluoride Some remedies, like clove oil or saltwater rinses, offer short-term relief, while others, such as apple cider vinegar, make sensitivity worse Protecting enamel with gentle brushing, staying hydrated, breaking harmful habits, and seeking care from a mercury-free biological dentist help stop pain at its root

Apostasy - From the Gospel Chapter 10 In these things consisted the mystery of iniquity, the springs and occasions of that great apostasy which was in the world under the Papacy. 1. The doctrine of the gospel (as to its peculiar nature, the causes, motives, and ends of it) was generally lost, partly through the horrible ignorance of some, and partly through the pernicious errors of others, whose duty it was to have preserved it.

It was supposed to be a quiet evening on the hilltop. Just a man, the breeze, and a storm rolling in over Crab Orchard. The kind of day where the air smells like rain and crabapples. But that evening brought something far worse. As he sat looking over the field, he saw what he thought was a buck—tall, alert, silhouetted against the tree line. But something was off. The color. The stance. The silence. And then… it stood up. This wasn't a deer. It rose onto two legs, towering at eight feet tall. Its body long, limbs lanky, but worst of all, its head: a skull. Emaciated. With glowing eyes and a rack of antlers that didn't belong to anything natural. And the smell? Decay. Worse than death. Worse than that time the funeral home lost power and the whole block—including the caramel apple stand next door—was bathed in the stench of the unthinkable. This thing, this demon deer, watched. It never crossed the hilltop. It stayed just out of reach, lurking at the edge of reason. And then, slowly, it backed away into the tree line—and vanished. Just like that. Could it have been a Wendigo? A skinwalker? Or some undiscovered nightmare of the deep woods? A shape-shifting spirit with a hunger far older than time? You may laugh… but wait until the next time you see something tall at the edge of the trees—and it doesn't blink. #DemonDeer #WendigoSighting #ShapeShifter #CryptidEncounter #RealGhostStories #BackwoodsTerror #RottenBuck #HauntedHilltop #ParanormalEncounter #CrabOrchardHorror Love real ghost stories?
