Rogier Windhorst and David Livingston: Professor Windhorst warns that the Hubble Space Telescope's orbit will begin to decay uncontrollably by September 2033 due to solar maximum atmospheric expansion. To prevent a hazardous, uncontrolled re-entry, Windhorst advocates for a robotic servicing mission to boost Hubble's orbit. As the only remaining telescope with precise blue-ultraviolet capabilities, Hubble's data remains critical and heavily in demand. Windhorst urges NASA to fund a $100 million rescue mission and eventually construct the Habitable Worlds Observatory to search for Earth-like exoplanets starting in 2040. (3)

Arabic culture and literature hold a vastly rich classical history that continues to captivate scholars and readers worldwide. Renowned literary critic and Columbia University professor, Dr. Muhsin Al-Musawi, explores the depths of this heritage, from the global allure of the Arabian Nights to the historical dynamic of Baghdad's intellectual hubs. The discussion delves into how translation served as a window between cultures, the contested notion of an age of decay, and the brilliant prose of modern artists like Jabra Ibrahim Jabra. Reflecting on his own career of writing out of love and devotion rather than mere scholarship, Dr. Al-Musawi critiques how literary prizes can drive trendy imitation instead of a genuinely creative mind.   00:00 Introduction 01:57 The Roots of Passionate Scholarship 05:19 Baghdad's Layered Intellectual Landscapes 09:51 Cultural Solace & the Ambition of Translation 12:26 Confronting the Global Legacy of the Arabian Nights 14:55 Literary Taste & the Metamorphosis of Translation 19:40 The Romantic Search for Spaces Without Borders 26:27 The Vastness of Classical Traditions & the True Renaissance 28:53 Intellectual Intersections & the Republic of Letters 33:15 Challenging the Conventional Notion of an Age of Decay 39:45 Jabra Ibrahim Jabra & the Topography of an Artist 44:58 Curating a Diverse Core Arabic Fiction Curriculum 49:33 Trendy Prizes & the Necessity of the Creative Mind   Muhsin Jassim al-Musawi is Professor of Classical and Modern Arabic Literature, Comparative and Cultural Studies at Columbia University. Better Today Than Yesterday (BTTY) Podcast

You might have a decay problem at work.Life is often described as a stool with four legs. Health, family, work, faith/spirituality. Get one of these wrong and the whole thing tips over. What about at work? Here's three:Leg One: ResultsThis is why we're here. If you run a business, that means making money. What you do with that money is up to you. Reinvest it, give it away, give it back to investors. When you decide what good results look like, you build a dashboard. You show up weekly, monthly, quarterly, and you look at it. Are we delivering? Yes or no. So, this leg gets most of the attention. It's easy to see and measure.Ironically, this attention is often the reason for the decay.Leg Two: CultureCulture isn't five or ten values a founder or exec team wrote on a whiteboard at an offsite in Napa. It's what the humans actually do in the real world. This is worth slowing down on.Culture is the sum of our actions. Actions are what produce results. Combine a good culture with a good strategy, you get good results.Culture is hard to measure and harder to be honest about. Especially if you're in charge. If you're paying attention to the small things people do, you'll know. Then, it's about whether you have the courage to say it and something about it. Remember, those with the most power have an outsized impact on culture.Leg Three: DevelopmentIt's easy to talk about what we do for people in a recruiting deck, but when you stop and look at your week, how much of it is focused on this leg of the stool? Intentional development of your people. Do you spend 20% of your time? A day a week? What's the right number?Andy Grove put a number on it."Training is, quite simply, one of the highest-leverage activities a manager can perform. Consider for a moment the possibility of your putting on a series of four lectures for members of your department.Let's count on three hours of preparation for each hour of course time—twelve hours of work in total. Say that you have ten students in your class. Next year they will work a total of about twenty thousand hours for your organization. If your training efforts result in a 1 percent improvement in your subordinates' performance, your company will gain the equivalent of two hundred hours of work as the result of the expenditure of your twelve hours."Twelve hours in. Two hundred back. What if you saw a 1600% return in your 401k?Would you spend twelve hours a year on it? Or do you hand it to HR?Grove answers that one too."Training must be done by a person who represents a suitable role model. Proxies no matter how well-versed they might be in the subject matter cannot assume that role. The person standing in front of the class should be seen as a believable practicing authority on the subject taught."Not the best presenter. Not whoever has room on their calendar. A believable practicing authority.Training doesn't have to be a slide deck and a talking head. Mostly it isn't. We're developing the people around us every minute by how we behave and the actions we take. But it requires intentionality. It's pulling someone aside and saying, here's what I'm thinking and here's why.Or slowing down to tell the entire organization how you're thinking and why.Or admitting when you got it wrong or don't know the answer and asking for help.It can be as simple as saying please or thank you to someone. Especially when they're three layers down.Or the opposite, ending every email with ASAP. Or not even responding to the email.Or showing someone what it really looks like to be listened to. This can be jarring. Most people aren't used to it.All of this, development and culture. Those two, with the right strategy, get you results. In life, when a leg of the stool breaks, you know. You get sick. You get fired. The marriage cracks. The stool goes over fast and loud, and you go fix it. Eat better. Sleep. Go for a run. Spend more time with your person. At work, it fails slowly. Maybe the results leg gets thicker and stronger. The other two thin out. We say yes to things we should say no to. We let the jerk stay. Nobody says anything. You still get the bonus and the promotion and the accolades. Then one day, long after you're gone, the thing tips over. The culture stopped producing results. Nobody was developed to carry it.Decay. Then, death.Peter Drucker said it very cleanly in 1966."Every organization needs performance in three major areas: It needs direct results; building of values and their reaffirmation; and building and developing people for tomorrow. If deprived of performance in any one of these areas, it will decay and die."Sixty years. And we're still paying attention to one dashboard.Take care. Be good.-kv This is a public episode. Jeremy Ryan Slate on Rome, oligarchy, currency, and the breakdown of the West Graham Dunlop and Darren Grimes sit down with Jeremy Ryan Slate for a wide-ranging conversation about civilizational collapse, using Rome as the main historical lens. Jeremy argues that the West is following a familiar pattern of monetary debasement, immigration strain, and declining political ethics, while Darren and Graham push the discussion toward technology, energy, election integrity, and whether there is any humane way to stabilize the system. We discuss why the Roman pattern may be repeating across the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe, what actually causes collapse, and whether reform is still possible through currency, production, and energy. Key topics Jeremy lays out his "Roman pattern" framework with three main drivers of collapse: monetary debasement, immigration pressure, and the loss of ethics among political leaders. The conversation turns to whether the West should be viewed as one collapsing bloc or as a set of countries moving at different speeds through the same decline. Jeremy argues that modern democracy has already drifted into oligarchy, pointing to executive power, elite control of money, and the replacement of candidates as evidence. The hosts compare modern politics to Rome's client patron system, where voting and public policy often rewarded whoever could hand out the most benefits. A major thread is the 1913 turning point in the US: the 17th Amendment, federal income tax, and the Federal Reserve Act. The group also discusses the War Powers Act, executive war-making, and how crises are used to expand state power. Jeremy says collapse is usually slow, not cinematic, and compares it to Rome's long degradation rather than a sudden movie-style fall. Darren and Graham explore whether universal high income, automation, or energy abundance could replace broken welfare and monetary systems. Jeremy pushes back on the idea of unconditional handouts, arguing that any workable system still needs incentives, value creation, and consequences for bad behavior. The most optimistic path, in Jeremy's view, is a two-pronged fix: cut waste and rebuild industrial production. They also dig into energy as the next big frontier, especially nuclear power, grid modernization, and the idea of backing currency through actual productive capacity. The episode closes with Jeremy explaining his work on The Roman Pattern, Hidden Forces in History, and the Athenian Book Club. Message from Illideen! Guess what? I found a "lost" episode. Meaning while editing I accidentally skipped this episode leaving a HUGE gap in the story if I left it out. Hence, this episode is labeled 9.5. oops. -------------------------------------------------------- Last we left off, our party gathered on the island of Miþok, still raw with the grief of the loss of Chad's brother, Valerian. Chaddious offered grim counsel about what awaited them at Vorkeek Manor — his mother Karen, a woman of cold calculation and colder affection, a place where every kindness concealed a hook. Before they could depart, Shade was seized by a vision so vivid and violent it left him crumpled on the floor of the sleep hut, gasping — a blood-soaked battlefield, two Terrasques like hounds at heel, and behind them, beings of such immense and terrible divinity that the word "gods" felt almost too small. He felt an arrow strike his shoulder, heard a woman scream a name, and then the vision shattered. In this episode(SPOILERS BELOW): The party dresses in mourning clothes and crosses into Vorkeek territory to attend the funeral feast with an ominous ending. The evening only darkens from there. According to PhD graduate Isabel Lasala, who is also an architect and landscape architect, and one of the directors of Lasala & Lasala Design Studio, "Cemeteries have long been central to our relationship with death, traditionally viewed as sacred and static places. "But what if we reimagined cemeteries as dynamic, hybrid spaces shaped by time, memory, and ecological processes?  "Rather than viewing their gradual decay as failure, we could explore design-driven alternatives that merge the contrasting forces of grief and play, transforming decay into a catalyst for civic engagement. "This approach could inspire innovative design strategies for revitalising forgotten urban spaces, creating a new type of urban environment that bridges grief and play, memory and adaptation."In this episode, we talk to Isabel about applying urban design ideas to a necropolis.

“It's the most readable death metal logo I've ever seen in my life…”   Dave and Joe Haley.   If you're trying to understand the importance of this particular drum & guitar team, just think of some of the other legendary “band of brothers” in the metal community that come to mind who have gone on to elevate and transform modern music as we know it…brothers such as Alex & Eddie Van Halen and Vinnie & Darrell Abbott.    Formed in 1999 (“the year of the Matrix”) and hailing from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, technical death metal juggernauts PSYCROPTIC have swiftly evolved from the stereotypical “cookie monster” style of traditional death metal into an exponentially advanced, ultra precise, tech death riff machine of such complex artistry & surgical precision that the only proper response to have when listening to them is to laugh out loud in amazement and exclaim “WHOA!” with utter disbelief, shock, and awe at such incredible technical proficiency and prowess.   Hear one of the most complimentary voicemails we've ever received, never forget that “you've gotta use your teeth” whenever you are “schlebbin or schluppin”, and find out how snakes bang when you JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with the most technically gifted band of tech death Aussies we've ever had the pleasure of listening to with PSYCROPTIC. This week on Riff Worship, we're joined by prolific multi-instrumentalist Garry Brents (Sallow Moth) and guitarist Joe Gordon (Mortal Decay) for a deep dive into Mortal Decay's landmark 2002 sophomore album, Forensic!Together, we trace Mortal Decay's evolution—from their early 1990s origins as Necropolis and Macabre to underground demo staples like Grisly Aftermath (1993) and Brutalizing Creations (1995). We break down the making of their classic debut, Sickening Erotic Fanaticism (1997), and analyze why their 2002 Unique Leader Records release, Forensic, remains a high-water mark for progressive brutal death metal.Plus, Garry Brents gives us an inside look at the upcoming Sallow Moth record, Hydrophilous Brood (out July 24th via Willowtip Records). We discuss collaborating with new drummer Allen Gingerich, unpack the gear behind the Sallow Moth tone, and explore how Mortal Decay's brutal death metal legacy directly influenced his songwriting!Sallow Moth - Hydrophilous Brood drops 7/24 via Willowtip Records: https://www.willowtip.com/bands/details/sallow-moth.aspxMortal Decay - Sickening Erotic Fanaticism LP Repress is OUT NOW via Hells Headbangers Records: https://shop-hellsheadbangers.com/item-group.asp?PgpID=41321Recommendations:Mastodon - Marrow DeepScasm - Punished by DisembowelmentCathedral - In MemoriamNoctule - Extinguish Thy FlameReinfection - They Die For NothingReeking Aura - On the Promise of the MoonANCIIENTS - Beyond the Reach of the SunInveracity - Circle of PerversionFollow Riff WorshipInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/riffworshippod/Twitter: https://x.com/RiffWorshipPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RiffWorshipPodCheck out our Official Playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Riffs on Repeat (YouTube Music)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)

Guests in Londinium, 92 AD: Gaius and Germanicus. The Imperial Decay of the American Order. The discussion shifts to the deterioration of American institutions, which Germanicus claims are now indistinguishable from the 3rd-century Roman imperial system. He describes a "long unraveling" of the constitutional order where Congress has become "nothing" and the Supreme Court is forced to uphold basic tenets it wasn't designed to enforce. This "emperor system" is characterized by an executive branch that is increasingly detached from reality regarding global economic stability and military resources. Furthermore, he asserts that the political establishment is too corrupt to produce genuine leaders, resulting in "pygmies" who are incapable of challenging the prevailing delusions. He warns that the U.S. is at a historical "inflection point" similar to when the Roman Empire began to collapse after centuries of dominance, noting that current leaders risk a global "economic fault" or famine by pursuing unsustainable escalations in Eurasia. (2)SULLAGuests in Londinium, 92 AD: Gaius and Germanicus. The Ritual of Combat and Modern Delusions. Germanicusargues that for the Romans, war and ceremony were inextricably linked, using triumphs and gladiatorial spectacles to forge a shared identity between the people and the military. These rituals were "incarnations of the spirit of Rome" triumphing over "barbaric" enemies, providing a form of "ecstatic participatory" fulfillment. He notes a parallel in modern America, which uses "ecstatic vicarity" through high-tech war footage and video games to maintain a similar bond. However, he warns that the U.S. dangerously underestimates adversaries like Iran by viewing them as "barbarians" rather than a sophisticated, 2,500-year-old culture. He laments the loss of the "sobriety" that guided Cold War leadership—where the stakes of nuclear confrontation were understood—noting that current American policy reflects a "gods of war" complex born from the easy successes of the early 1990s. Gaius adds that this technological display creates a "fog of war" where the enemy's own capabilities and "vote" in the conflict are often ignored. (1)

Are you tired of repeating the same emotional reactions, relationship conflicts, leadership struggles, or painful cycles and wondering why nothing seems to change? In this session, Tim Holloway teaches how to begin noticing the patterns in your life so you can stop living on autopilot and start growing with wisdom, maturity, and spiritual clarity. This message is for men, leaders, believers, husbands, fathers, business owners, and anyone pursuing personal growth, emotional maturity, spiritual formation, and biblical transformation. You'll learn why your reactions, avoidance, anger, withdrawal, fear, overworking, procrastination, and relationship tension are not random. They are patterns revealing something deeper beneath the surface. God uses patterns everywhere: seasons, seedtime and harvest, day and night, pruning, leadership growth, biblical stories, emotions, and even pain. When you learn to notice these patterns without blame, excuses, or denial, you begin to see where you are located, what God is forming in you, what needs to be pruned, and what cycle must finally be broken. What you'll learn: how repeated emotional patterns reveal hidden beliefs; why biblical stories like Adam and Eve, Cain, David, Elijah, and Jonah show recurring human cycles; how relationships drift from connection to disconnection through neglect, assumptions, and unresolved hurt; how leadership, business, money, burnout, and spiritual maturity all follow patterns that can either produce growth or keep you stuck. 00:00 Intro: What Are You Noticing?02:21 The Key to Wisdom Is Recognizing Patterns03:33 Life Stages, Growth, and Development05:22 Independence, Marriage, Fatherhood, and Maturity10:11 Successful People Notice Patterns11:24 Seasons, Timing, and Ecclesiastes15:42 Seedtime, Harvest, and Spiritual Growth18:16 Bringing Ideas and Growth to Life20:04 Water, Flow, Stagnation, and Integration21:27 Location Identification and Leadership Growth22:12 Transformation Patterns and the Butterfly23:47 Forest Growth, Decay, Renewal, and Pruning26:05 Ebb and Flow: When to Advance or Retreat28:35 Day, Night, Work, Rest, and Sabbath29:31 The Pruning Pattern Before Greater Fruit31:00 Biblical Patterns and the Sin Cycle34:34 Cain, Comparison, Resentment, and Sabotage35:46 David, Bathsheba, Temptation, and Cover-Up37:18 Why Detrimental Patterns Keep Repeating39:30 The Fork in the Road Before the Cycle Continues43:18 Emotional Patterns and Faulty Interpretation48:53 Relationship Patterns and Repeated Conflict51:03 Behavior Patterns, Escapes, and Reinforcement52:45 Leadership, Business, Bottlenecks, and Growth53:59 Kingdom Patterns and God's Process56:25 Jesus Christ as the Ultimate Pattern #SpiritualGrowth#EmotionalMaturity#BiblicalWisdom#LeadershipDevelopment#PersonalGrowth Learn more about your ad choices. For the first of two tales from Dan, we head south. In the middle of Mexico City sits a massive abandoned hotel that was supposed to become the most luxurious destination in Latin America. Instead, it became the site of an infamous suicide, decades of dark rumors, and a mysterious shrine built for the spirit of a little girl. Then, we'll head to Chesapeake and Virginia Beach where locals have whispered about a stretch of road known for deadly accidents, unsolved murders, ghostly apparitions, and screams heard in the darkness near Stumpy Lake. Is the road haunted by the spirits of some of  those who've died there? The third story this week is about a young girl who is tortured by the laughing, floating head in her closet. What happens when the simple act of slowing down a metronome reveals the exact limits of our attention, and how might our physical body size secretly dictate the way we experience rhythm and reality? Dr. David Gilden, a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas, Austin, joins host PJ Wehry to discuss the overlooked physical and biological laws shaping human perception. Dr. Gilden explores the human response to living in time in his book, The Psychology of Human Temporality. They examine how the world we experience is not rote or matter-of-fact, but actively created by our minds through relationships, and why those cognitive connections inevitably fall apart. In this conversation they explore: How our minds generate emergent properties—like transforming isolated claps into rhythm or sequential notes into a melody—to actively construct the world we experience. The phenomenon of "islands," demonstrating how introducing just a couple seconds of silence between beats or gestures destroys our ability to perceive continuity, leaving us lost. Why the traditional psychological view of memory as a storage container of facts falls short, and how a physics-based approach—where the past dynamically influences the future, much like weather systems or financial markets—better explains how we lose our train of thought. The metaphor of "cooling coffee" applied to the mind, illustrating how a sensory input temporarily heats the brain, creating a brief window for connection before the activation energy decays according to natural laws. The biological science of allometry and the radical hypothesis that a person's physical body size and surface area might actually dictate their cognitive decay time. Surprising experimental data revealing that taller people can actually maintain slower rhythmic connections than shorter people, suggesting the mind's shedding of activation mirrors the body's shedding of physical heat. This is a conversation for anyone interested in experimental psychology, theoretical physics, and music who wants to understand the hidden biological mechanisms structuring our everyday perception of the passage of time. Make sure to check out Dr. Gilden's book: The Psychology of Human Temporality

We're coming off of our Summer Game Fest-related high, toting a bunch of news from publisher-driven events that occurred after we published our last episode. For starters, the Xbox Showcase... showcased... 28 games in total, of which 24 are coming to PlayStation 5, including State of Decay 3, Senua, and Spyro: A Realm Beyond (not to mention release dates for Halo: Combat Evolved and Fable). But Xbox's peculiar, wishy-washy, and inconsistent behavior likewise makes us wonder what the future might hold for Microsoft releases on Sony's hardware, especially because Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution -- both internally slated to migrate to PlayStation 5 until very recently -- won't appear at all. Meanwhile, Nintendo's newest Direct also had some interesting fodder, including a surprise look at Kingdom Hearts IV, a brand new 2D-HD game in the form of Final Fantasy Resonance, and more. Other news this week revolves around Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6, a new Crazy Taxi adventure in the form of World Tour, a promising magic shooter called Magicians: The Devil's Deal, a fall release date for Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, and extremely strong sales figures for Yacht Club's Mina the Hollower. We wrap things up (as always) with listener inquiries! Now that everything has settled, what are our three most-anticipated games, respectively? Should Sony bite the bullet and greenlight Destiny 3? Where's Naughty Dog hiding? Is Colin falling prey to Big Plumber and Big Sewer propaganda by refusing to flush wipes? Xbox's 2026 summer showcase has come and gone! As per usual, it was a relatively strong showing featuring big reveals and welcome surprises, yet it still managed to put up a few big head scratchers. Fortunately, the good outweighed the bad. For starters, the hardcore Xbox community has deeply yearned for the return to exclusivity. After months of lip service, Xbox is taking action by making Gears Of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution console exclusive. Obviously, that leaves us with many questions! Why these two games? What data do they hope to collect from them? Is Xbox appeasing their hardcore community for enough time to help rebuild the base before transitioning to a fully PC ecosystem? Beyond the strategy updates, we have plenty of good games! Halo, State Of Decay, A Plague Tale: Resonance, Persona 6, a new Spryo, Vivarium, and a chockful of other delightful looking games all made their presence felt. Did Coalition's return to the essence of this franchise go off without a hitch? We discuss!
