Want to get in touch? Send Claire a message!Welcome to Episode 95 of The Eat for Endurance Podcast! I have an Athlete Nutrition Profile for you today, featuring ultrarunner and coach Jes Woods. You may already be familiar with Jes, especially if you live in NYC. She coaches thousands of athletes through Nike Run Club, Brooklyn Track Club, and Brooklyn Trail Club, and has also worked with boutique fitness studios including Mile High Run Club and Flywheel. Jes also is a fierce athlete herself. She competed as a triple jumper for nearly a decade, and then discovered distance running after college while working in broadcasting at NBC. She ultimately embraced the ultra running community, started coaching, and turned fitness into a full-time career. We had a great discussion about her nutrition and how that has changed over time as she transitioned into distance running. We explore how she fuels herself, from the marathon to the 200 mile distance, as well as what she observes and teaches her own athletes. Jes also shares that she hates to cook, and tells us how she keeps herself well-nourished to support her health and very active lifestyle. I hope you enjoy this episode! The ideal human body has been commercialized, stigmatized, fetishized and, yes, even racialized. For women, trying to achieve the “perfect” body is an unattainable and often traumatic pursuit that never seems to end. On this episode, Sabrina Strings, PhD, an associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine, explains why this is and helps us understand its impact on our individual and collective sense of well-being. Drawing from her book, Fearing the Black Body, she dives deep into diet culture, fat phobia, body positivity and the unsettled debate: Is obesity a disease?Learn MoreExplore more of the history and research on the “ideal” female form through Strings' book, Fearing the Black Body. Here's a quick read: The Problem With BMI (body mass index).Step away from the stereotypes and move in whatever way feels good to you with workouts of all levels in the Nike Training Club app and guided runs in the Nike Run Club app.
This week's guest is Isaac Updike of Nike and Empire Elite. Isaac is an accomplished steeplechaser who made it to the finals in the last two Olympic Trials, most recently finishing 5th in Eugene in 2021. With a personal best of 8:17 in the steeple and 3:58 in the mile, he's one of the speediest runners to ever come out of his native Alaska. Isaac had a rough 2022 marked by two bouts of COVID that derailed his track season, but he came on the show with a great attitude and perspective about his place in the sport, his remarkable longevity as a pro, and his goals moving forward. We had a great conversation about all the ins and outs of the steeplechase and hurdling, as well as covering his relationship with his coaches and athletes, why he proudly wears the blue-collar runner label, and what it felt like to finally earn an individual pro contract at last year's Trials. This episode of Run Your Mouth is presented by Nike. We've partnered with them to help share athletes' stories in a way that reflects the different reasons we all choose to run, work out, and find our part of the track and field community. In my conversations with athletes in all events and all levels over the years, one common theme I hear over and over again is that finding the unique ways running brings you joy is the best way to develop a happy lifelong relationship with the sport. Come run with Nike. For the everyday and common runner Nike is committed to motivating, standing by, listening to, and helping them from the starting line to the finish line and every inch, meter and mile in between. Whether it's a local race, a major marathon, or just a run with friends, get out there and run. Just do it. Check out the Nike Run Club app and come run with us. On training with Empire Elite: “My coaches are super receptive and collaborative with their athletes. They have a deep knowledge and you want to listen to them, but they aren't going to supersede your opinion and what you think is best for yourself.” On scratching from USAs: “It's a point of pride – to go out there and try to represent your country and show all the work you've done. But there comes a point where competing is counterproductive and that was the decision we had to make.” On finding longevity as a pro runner: “The faster you get, the harder it is to get faster. At a certain point, you have to stack months and years together to have a single breakthrough. But the secret is pretty simple: we haven't been overtrained and we enjoy it still.”
“I'm honestly so happy to get back to this level of running and feeling healthy running again and feeling like myself again. U.S. Champs was one of the most rewarding races of my career, honestly. With everything that I had been through the last four years, the deep, deep belief in myself never went away but there was a lot of doubt that I couldn't get past until I finally had the race result to prove it to me. That was that race. It did a lot for my confidence for the rest of the season for sure.” My guest for this episode is American record holder, Olympic silver medalist and world championship bronze medalist Evan Jager of the Nike Bowerman Track Club. I had him on as a guest back in 2019 as part of a panel with his teammates but this is the first time that he's on as a guest solo. Things are much different now. He missed much of the last four years due to injury but clawed his way back in 2022 to qualify for the World Championships with a runner-up finish at the USATF Outdoor Championships in June. He made the world championship final a month later and finished sixth overall. He shares his thoughts on that performance, the season overall and what he's learned throughout some of the lowest points in his career. We also touch on how he envisions the next two years going through the 2024 Paris Olympics if all goes well. SUPPORT THE SPONSORS GARMIN: Music. Training. Data. This week's guest is Elise Cranny of Bowerman Track Club. Elise is a Tokyo Olympian and 2-time U.S. champ in the 5,000m who came on the podcast to look back on her 2022 season as she wraps up a spin through the European race circuit. We talked about Elise's growth as a professional runner and her relationship with Bowerman coach Jerry Schumacher, including the difficult decision to scratch the U.S. 10,000m champs earlier this year and how it paid off in her racing season. We also talked a lot about the mental side of the sport an the importance of listening to your body and planning for your long-term success over short-term satisfaction. Elise also shared her post-season travel plans, her European laundry strategy, and of course, her love language. On training under Bowerman coach Jerry Schumacher: “I'm a pretty independent person to a fault. I'm still trying to work on being better at communicating [with my coaches], but with Jerry, the energy he brings is what I love most. He helps you believe that you can go do something special.” On skipping the U.S. 10,000m champs: “It was hard to forgo the 10k championships in the moment but in the end, showing up at USAs and focusing on the 5k was the right call. I don't think I'd be still going this far into the season if I didn't make that decision.” On planning for a long professional running career: “In this sport, it's so easy to get caught up in short-term goals. The sport takes so much patience and a lot of times it takes years and years of work before it pays off, but consistent work can be really powerful in the long term.”
“At the moment, the 1500 meters is a competitive race. Starting this year was crazy with 3:52 and 3:50. It's our generation now. When the upcoming generation is coming, I think it will be lowered to 3:48. Hopefully next year, I'm hoping to run 3:49 and hopefully the next generation will lower it. I think the 1500 meters is a competitive race. To go lower like 3:48 is really possible.” Faith Kipyegon is the greatest women's 1500 meter runner of all-time. She is a two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion. She just won the 2022 Diamond League title and also clocked the second-fastest time in history this year with a 3:50.37 at the Monaco Diamond League – that's three-tenths of a second shy of the world record. It's coming. In this episode, we talk about just how much she wants it but also some of her roots in the sport, her motivation and what it means to her to show the world just how strong female athletes can come back after giving birth. I really enjoyed this chat with her and I hope this gets you to know her a little bit better. This week's episode is a first for RYM as we're so lucky to be joined by reigning World and Olympic champion pole vaulter Katie Nageotte. Katie may not have a lot of long runs in her training but she was a fantastic guest and I absolutely loved the opportunity to nerd out over one of my favorite events in track and field while getting into all the fun Run Your Mouth topics we love. Katie is an Atlanta-based pole vaulter with a personal best of 4.95m (16 ft 3 in) who won gold in Tokyo and Eugene in 2021 and 2022 along with a World Indoor silver this winter in Serbia. But behind those big championship performances were a lot of mental and physical challenges along the way, and on this episode we talked a lot about the barriers Katie's had to overcome this year and how managing the “post-Olympic hangover” turned into one of the biggest hurdles of her professional career. This conversation really shows how the end result of an athlete's season only scratches the surface of their story, and how getting to know some of the sport's biggest stars can teach you a lot about overcoming your own obstacles. This episode of Run Your Mouth is presented by Nike. We've partnered with them to help share athletes' stories in a way that reflects the different reasons we all choose to run, work out, and find our part of the track and field community. On the post-Tokyo hangover: “After I won [Olympic gold] I had so many cool opportunities […] but I didn't realize how exhausted I was until I started competing again in January. I took six weeks off physically but not stepping away mentally or emotionally took a toll.” On resetting after the season: “When I'm training, even on rest days, I'm always focused on vaulting – it's always in the back of my mind. So when I get time off, being able to step away and not think about pole vault for a while is the best thing for me.” On growing slowly as an athlete: “It's taken me time at every level to reach the top. It took me until senior year of high school to win the state meet, until senior year of college to win a national title. It took me 5 years after college to get a contract. It taught me internal motivation – I'm not doing it for approval; I'm just here to be the best to be I can be.” On training with Sandi Morris: “I was pushed harder than I ever have been training with her. We're competitive people and when we get on the runway we want to win, but in practice we're training next to each other, rather than against each other.”
Jasmine Todd and Katelyn Hutchison talk with Erica Bougard, a five-time U.S. champion who finished 4th at the 2019 World Championships and competed at the Tokyo Olympics. Bougard caught global attention at the 2019 World Championships in Doha for wearing high jump shoes with the rainbow flag while competing in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal. I want to set American records. I want to set world records and just strive for the best Abdihamid can do.” Abdihamid Nur is a professional runner for Nike after a remarkable breakout year with Northern Arizona University. He was part of their NCAA cross country winning team but excelled on the track to the NCAA indoor 5000m and 3000m titles. He finished third in the NCAA outdoor 10,000m final but rebounded with a third-place finish at the U.S. Outdoor Championships to qualify for his first World Championship team. It marked the first time he got to rock the Team USA kit and that's truly special since representation matters and his story begins in Somalia and makes stops along the way in Kenya and Egypt before he finally arrived in the United States as a kid. You'll hear all about that, his incredible season and his hunger for more after finishing 11th at the World Championships. Abdihamid is truly someone you're gonna want to support for many years to come. "My dream to see from my country is to see, in the next five years time I hope, that my country will be able to do anything in distance running – especially in track and field and in the marathons. I really hope that the kind of light that I've put will transcend into raising many champions. I've taken the lead. My brother Jacob is also taking the lead. We believe that these young people when they continue pursuing the sport with discipline, proper guidance and listening, I believe Uganda will be somewhere up there." Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei is just 25 years old and he's already an Olympic gold medalist at 5000m and Olympic silver medalist at 10,000m. He's a three-time world champion. At this summer's world championships, he won the 10,000 meters and finished second to Jakob Ingebrigsten in the 5000m. Oh…and he's also the world record holder at 5000m and 10,000 meters. In addition to all of his work on the track, Joshua Cheptegei works closely with his sponsors including Nike and the NN Running Team to give back to the next generation of runners in Uganda so you'll hear a bit about that as well in our conversation. Kyle Merber and I previously did an episode of Track Snacks where we shared out admiration for Joshua and now you can hear from him yourself. Jasmine Todd and Katelyn Hutchison speak with U.S. 100m champion Melissa Jefferson on the power of community that helped her become one of the best short sprinters in the country. She ran a wind-aided 10.69 to become the No. on the U.S. all-time, all-conditions list. After finishing 8th at the NCAA Championships in the 100m, she stormed back to win the USATF Championships a few weeks later. She was also the NCAA indoor champion at 60m while at Coastal Carolina. For Jasmine, her faith and her early success put her on a path to be motivated to chase records and titles while in high school and then at the University of Oregon. Katelyn is currently using her own lessons on motivation as she continues to improve upon her own personal bests while competing as a sprinter at the University of Kentucky this upcoming year. Takeaways – A podcast about learning from the wisdom of others
Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned. When I turned 40 a few years ago, it occurred to me that if I didn't start getting healthy, I would be 50 before I knew it, and still feel bad. It was time to make a change in my health habits. I landed on running. I started with the Nike Run Club app that coached me through my runs. As I saw results, both mentally and physically, running became more and more of a passion. I decided to get a coach and start training for a half marathon. That's when I met Michelle Cupersmith. Michelle's resume will tell you she's a senior financial analyst with Light & Wonder, formerly Scientific Games. She has a double major in accounting and psychology. Her resume is impressive but, first and foremost, Michelle identifies as a runner. It's her hobby and passion and she's helped make running a passion for people who she coaches through Team Run Run. Michelle has given me vital lessons, tips, and coaching that allowed me to complete a half marathon in under 10 minutes on average per mile and then train for a full marathon which I completed June 5th. Along the way, running has also shown me important, fundamental lessons that parallel life. Run the Mile You're In What does it mean to run the mile you're in? Essentially, it means to be present in what you're doing. If you're running, run. If you're working, work. When you hit a wall and don't want to continue, take time to be present and do a “systems check” to help get yourself back in the race. “The point is not getting from A to B,” said Michelle. “It's the run itself.” Key Takeaway: Pace Yourself to Accomplish Goals One of the first lessons I learned when Michelle and I began working together is how important it is to know your paces. Whether you're running a marathon, or running the marathon of life, knowing when to run an easy pace, a sprint pace, a moderate pace, or even a recovery pace is an essential life lesson. “Most people will run at a pace that is not sustainable,” said Michelle, “You're killing yourself.” There are so many ways that running can help, beyond just the physical. It involves the body and the mind. Running is the chance to prove to yourself that you can do hard things. In this episode of Takeaways, Michelle shares some of her coaching advice for runners and how that advice translates into important life lessons and business takeaways. Key Takeaways from this special episode include: - There is a difference between rest and recovery - Why is fueling properly so important? - What do you do when you want to quit? - If you have blisters and cramps, you're doing it wrong - How the mantra, Nothing New on Race Day, is so critical I hope you enjoy it! Most of us equate feeling tired with needing more sleep. But according to Saundra Dalton-Smith, MD, that only scratches the surface of what it really means to be rested.
