Karen is 65 years old and has tried justabout every diet you can think of – The Scarsdale Diet, Atkins and keto diets, Weight Watchers, Noom, the Cabbage Soup, Healthy Inspirations, grapefruit diet, Whole30, Slim-Fast, South Beach, Green Smoothie Diet, Nutrisystem, hCG – if you've heard of it, Karen probably tried it!   Some of these diets brought Karen temporarysuccess, and others caused her to gain weight or slow her metabolism.  None of them were sustainable, and the weightalways crept back. One day in the summer of 2020, Karen was perusing Facebook and saw a photo of her sister-in-law, Dedra Campbell.  Karen thought Dedra had posted a “Throwback Thursday” photo, as her sister-in-law looked young, slim, and glowing.  Karen was shocked to learn the photo was recent, so she immediately called her sister-in-law to find out what she did to lose weight and seemingly age backwards.  Dedra told her the secret was IntermittentFasting brought up negative thoughts and feelings in Karen.  In Karen's mind, fasting = deprivation and hunger.  However, with her sister-in-law's encouragement, she listened to the basics of the program and bought the book she recommended, “Fast.Feast.Repeat.” by Gin Stephens.  Karen read the book and said she would try it for one day to see how it went.  On August 13, 2020, Karen did a clean 18/6 fast, found it to be effortless, and the rest, as they say, is history.  Karen was invited to Graeme's group, The Fasting Highway, by Dedra after another IF guru closed her Facebook group and moved to another platform.  Karen had been fasting for not quite a year when she joined The Fasting Highway.  Karen had only lost 10 pounds by this time, but was encouraged and inspired by Graeme, his book, and fellow group members to stay the course and trust the process. Karen realised that her weight loss journey was her own, and she could not compare herself to others. Karen is 5'5” and her highest weight ever was 208 pounds.  She could not bend over to tie her shoes at that weight and was always out of breath.  She also suffered from sleep apnea.  Karen's IF starting weight was 175.4 pounds, and she set her goal weight at 160 pounds (because she didn't think that at herage, being post-menopausal, having T2D, and being insulin resistant, she could get below that weight).  However,on July 3, 2023, Karen weighed 149 pounds, a weight she hadn't seen in almost 20 years.  Best thing – there wasno struggle to get there!  Yes, it did take almost 3 years to lose the weight, but the point is – she lost it withintermittent fasting when nothing else worked! It's now been almost 5 years since Karen started intermittent fasting, and her current weight is 142 pounds.  She sometimes gets as low as 138 pounds, bouncing between that number and 142 pounds.  Karen went from a size 12 (US) to wearing sizes 4 and 6.  Intermittent fasting gave Karen theconfidence that she would never have to lose weight again – and for the first time in years, she doesn't have 5 different clothing sizes in her closet.  She donated all her “big” clothes to charity, knowing she'd never need them again.  Another personal win is that Karen decidedto embrace her greys and, as a result, cut all the hair colour out.  She would never have had theconfidence to do this at her higher weights! To join the Patreon Community. Welcome to Entrepreneur Weekly with Alan Taylor. Today, he talks to Gregory Vetter, the CEO and founder of companies like Alta Fresh Foods and Homegrown Brands. Gregory's journey started in a small town where his mother's salad dressing inspired him. A funny moment happened when he found out a neighbor had taken her dressing, highlighting his love for food and community. After leaving his job in insurance sales, Gregory launched a salad dressing brand based on his mother's recipe. He was one of the first to offer organic options and the first to sell Whole30-approved bottled dressing in the U.S. His achievements earned him awards like the 35 Under 35 and recognition as a finalist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year. He lives on a farm with his wife and four kids, raising Longhorn cattle, and he is the author of the bestselling book "Undressed," which shares his journey in the clean food movement and the importance of avoiding artificial ingredients. Gregory's story began with creating a leading organic salad dressing brand during the clean eating trend. The company grew a lot but faced conflicts among investors, which led to a failed sale process that valued the business between $300 and $500 million. In the end, the company was auctioned for just $4.5 million. This experience inspired Gregory to write "Undressed" to share lessons with young entrepreneurs. Later, Gregory talked about the challenges he faced after selling his company during the COVID-19 crisis. He highlighted important leadership principles, like leaving things better than you found them. Encouraged by his performance coach, he decided to write a book. He mentioned that failure can enhance credibility and help guide others. From his journey, Tessamae emerged, a successful organic refrigerated dressing brand that follows Whole30 guidelines, showing that healthy products can taste great. Using his experience, Gregory also started Alta Foods, which creates private-label salads for retailers and focuses on reducing food waste. He later founded a brand accelerator to help others grow their ideas, including a portable toilet company that developed a successful brand and cleaning wipes. Gregory continues to explore new brand ideas in different areas. Alan asked Gregory to share key insights from his book, like the importance of leading by example and leaving things better than you found them. Gregory referenced a quote by Joseph Campbell: "The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek," which emphasizes facing fears, especially for leaders. He noted that many of his goals were only achieved after he confronted his fears. He advises aspiring entrepreneurs to get ready for their fears and to build resilience and growth through challenges. Gregory believes that success is a journey where consistent effort leads to progress over time. What's next for Gregory? He plans to start a new alcohol business soon, which excites him. This summer, he will also introduce a new energy drink that he thinks will be a refreshing addition to the market. He is also writing a new book to explore the concepts from his previous works, as many people have requested more insights. In addition to writing, Gregory is helping young business leaders overcome their challenges. Soon, he will begin leadership retreats at his farm. The first retreat, called "Finding Optimal," will help participants discover how to reach their full potential by understanding how to perform at their best. Gregory's current efforts show his commitment to helping others overcome obstacles and find motivation to pursue their dreams. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The B.rad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 22, 2024 75:18

This is an important show to help you be the best you can be throughout life, instead of following the typical path of accelerated aging and hormone decline driven by adverse lifestyle practices. Besides doing regular blood tests for male sex hormone panels, there is an obvious scoreboard to monitor in the form of visceral fat. Fighting the spare tire battle is the essence of aging gracefully, as visceral fat accumulation begets the accumulation of more fat and suppressed hormones. The tips outlined in this episode are simple, doable, sustainable and inexpensive—I will cover fitness (emphasizing sprinting and lower body strength training), diet (emphasizing protein and ditching processed foods), some talk about supplements, healthy romantic relationship dynamics, and a bit of proven biohacking such as red light therapy and therapeutic cold exposure.   TIMESTAMPS: How about some lifestyle tips for natural testosterone optimization? [00:54] When you want to think about hormone optimization, look first at sprinting. [04:18] You have to watch out for a pattern of overly stressful workouts. [07:29] The proper way to sprint is to give a near maximum effort of 92 to 95% and also take good recovery period. [09:27] Brad talks about how he does his own sprint workouts. A six to one ratio recovery to work interval is the goal. [14:19] Strength training involves emphasis on correct form, precise technique, and keeping your core stabilized. [21:09]  Monitor your testosterone level for your overall level of energy, vitality and anti-aging longevity status. [31:19] When looking at your diet, the foremost objective is to consume sufficient protein. [34:27] Vegans and vegetarians need to be very careful in your efforts to consume sufficient protein. [36:35] People who engage in intermittent fasting need to be concerned about getting sufficient protein. [39:52] As we age, our protein synthesis diminishes our ability to digest and assimilate and use protein as the building blocks for muscle and all other organs. [41:47] There have always been arguments about the macronutrients, fat and carbohydrate, but the bottom line if you eliminate the nutrient deficient foods, you are on the right track. [42:52] A spare tire is a sign of serious health disturbance. [46:48] Whey protein, and creatine are the very best, cleanest, freshest natural sources of protein.  [51:17] There are many supplements that claim to boost your energy, strength, build muscle and increase libido. [57:56] There are hormonal underpinnings that influence relationship dynamics. [59:45] Red light therapy can also boost your testosterone production. [01:04:08] There are some things to avoid that tank your testosterone. Stay away from plastics. [01:06:50] A sedentary lifestyle promotes chronic inflammation.  Keep moving. Melissa Urban is a bestselling author and the founder of the Whole 30 nutrition program, known for her transformative journey from an unhealthy lifestyle to becoming a leader in health and wellness. Born in New Hampshire and raised in a close-knit Portuguese Catholic family, Melissa struggled with a five-year drug addiction in her early 20s. After her second stint in rehab, she made the decision to completely overhaul her life, starting with exercise and healthier habits. ⁣ Her recovery journey began at a gym, where she joined a running group that helped her see herself as a healthy person. This mindset shift was crucial in maintaining her sobriety. Melissa's fitness journey evolved from running to triathlons, kettlebells, and eventually CrossFit, where she became deeply involved, even owning a gym and contributing to the CrossFit Journal. In 2009, inspired by her CrossFit experience, Melissa created the Whole 30 as a personal experiment. The program quickly gained popularity, leading her to quit her insurance job in 2010 to focus on it full-time. She relocated to Utah and began holding seminars across the country, marking the start of Whole 30 as a thriving business. Today, the program has expanded into a widely recognized brand, with partnerships with companies like LaCroix and Chipotle. ⁣ Melissa continues to spread the Whole 30 message through social media and her writing, while enjoying life in Salt Lake City, Utah. She remains focused on helping others discover what works best for their health through the Whole 30 program and is dedicated to staying flexible and open to new opportunities.

Whole30 began as a dietary experiment: For 30 days, Melissa Urban went without grains, dairy, legumes, alcohol and added sugar. She was trying to address several health problems, and the results were so extraordinary that she decided to share the diet with others. What followed was a blog, a series of seminars, a best-selling book and eventually a wide-ranging wellness brand that's helped millions of people identify the best diet for their own body. But in 2015, Melissa had to rethink everything—even her own name—when she split up with her husband and business partner, Dallas Hartwig. She retained ownership of the business, and today, the “Whole30 Approved” logo appears on a range of brands, from La Croix water to Chipotle salad bowls.
