George is working on a family book and sought the 1880 U.S. Federal Census Agricultural Schedules for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It highlights the critical absence of Agricultural Schedules, Manufacturing Schedules, Mortality Schedules, some Slave Schedules (1850 and 1860), and the unique 7-page 1880 Federal Census' Defective, Delinquent, and Dependent Schedules. These documents all enhance the context of our ancestors' lives and provide insights into the communities and potentially new resource clues. The originals of many of these documents were returned to individual states, and have found their way into state archives, state libraries, county courthouses, and other places. George wants the sites like MyHeritage, Ancestry, FamilySearch, Findmypast, and others to actively renew their research to locate, digitize, and index these census documents before they are completely lost. I have to admit, there is an unsung hero behind many of my favorite interviews of the past couple years. Connections and recommendations to some of the people who I've learned the most from in some recent discussions with people like Phyllis Van Ambraugh, Ben Taylor Davies, Ian Robertson, Ed Brown, and others have all come from a good friend of mine Andre Antunes who you'll finally get to know on this episode. I met Andre first in a car ride with our mutual friend and the co-founder of Climate Farmers, Philippe Birker, on our way to the first ever company team retreat at a little farm near Dijon in France. Andre and I immediately hit it off for our mutual love of learning from cutting edge innovators in the regenerative space, and his personal experience working as a veterinarian and professional market gardener gave him a grounded perspective on farming that a lot of advocates in this movement are lacking. Since that first meeting we've been in close contact as we both work closely with farmers in the company network to assist them in their transition to regenerative management of their farms, and Andre has gone on to manage large transition projects with multinational companies which you'll hear about very soon. He has also traveled all over Europe making connections in the industry, attending events, and visiting renowned farmers around the continent, always facilitating connections and collaborations, many of which have led to partnerships and events with Climate Farmers. At this point he is becoming one of the best known consultants for regenerative farming in Portugal and I finally made the time to catch up with him for today's episode. In this discussion we cover a lot of ground from the unique journey he's taken to get to where he is now, all of the influences and mentors that he has learned from and worked alongside to build up his knowledge and skills, stories from the farmers he works with and the projects he's helping to advance in places like the Azores islands, and much more. Together we look into trends and hurdles in the regen ag movement in Europe as a way of checking in with how far the movement has come in recent years as well as identifying where we still need to focus efforts to continue to make progress. All in all I'm just thrilled to be able to highlight Andre and his work here because he has also been an invaluable mentor and friend to me and is one of those people who I'm never surprised to find working behind the scenes of some of the most inspiring and innovative projects of recent years.

I've touched on this topic briefly in previous interviews, but it bears repeating. Agriculture around the world is going through a critical moment. The skyrocketing prices of petroleum products, meaning most agriculture chemicals and fertilizers as well as machinery fuel, is causing a tipping point for many farm businesses. Operations that have long been dependent on these synthetic inputs are facing tough decisions. Do they double down and continue to keep their land on life support, sticking with the system they know, but which is becoming more and more unsustainable, or do they take a gamble on new management methods that prioritize soil biology and multiple ecosystem services? There are no easy answers since for most growers who've relied on these inputs for years if not decades, there will need to be a period of transition, even if they chose regenerative management, in which their yields could suffer. Luckily, there are a few well qualified professionals out there with a track record of guiding farmers through the challenge of transitioning their land management practices, and I had the chance to speak to three of them in a special panel discussion. In today's session I'll be speaking with Ian Robertson, Ben Taylor-Davies, and Ed Brown. Between these three fellas they have decades of experience at the forefront of regenerative agriculture, and continue to push the advancement of agroecological innovation at both the individual farm scale as well as the institutional level. All three of these guys are good friends who attest to speaking to one another just about every day and you'll hear the characteristics of their friendship come out in this insightful and also light hearted discussion.

"You start to realize that the things you're habitually doing may be causing more suffering and how can you love yourself more, how can you nurture yourself more, so you can start to change that relationship with yourself." What starts out as a conversation about children's literature geared toward teaching parents and children mindfulness turns into one of the warmest, deepest, most vulnerable, and wonderful conversations we've had to date. Jenna Martin joins the show and talks with us about her book, Milo and the Wisdom of the Sea. By the end of their talk, Jenna and Courtney have also taken a deep dive (pun intended) into mindfulness, loss, grief, trauma, nervous system regulation, perspective shifts, and gratitude. Jenna's work focuses on helping people thrive through adversity and her views on post-traumatic growth are heart-felt and revelatory. Jenna's work in helping parents and children connect with one another mindfully aims to release parents from the "heavy burdens" of protecting children (and ourselves) from the challenges and adversities of life. Through the teachings of Milo, and an invitation to mindfulness, we all learn how to better accept discomfort and just go with the flow (more puns, yay!). About our guest: Jenna Martin is the author and creator of “Milo and the Wisdom of the Sea”. It's the first in a series of chapter books dedicated to teaching children (ages 5 through 9) emotional resilience. Through the characters in her books, children learn how to recognize, name, and move big emotions through their bodies. On a deeper level, they also learn to trust their intuition, explore their own unique identity, cultivate self-compassion, and increase empathy for others. Jenna's creation of the Milo series is inspired by her previous work with children in both educational and clinical settings where she spent the first part of her career training to become a child and family psychologist. Of course, there are many other sources for her creation of Milo including her own intimate experience with adversity. She's also dedicated the last four decades of her life to a rigorous meditation practice studying intensively with Zen Buddhist teachers like Ed Brown, and Reb Anderson as well with mindfulness creator Jon Kabbat Zinn. She now teaches meditation and other “life-wise”skills including creative journaling to big and little humans. When she's not writing children's books, creating Milo content, and teaching resilience, she's consulting as a UX content designer and helping to humanize the apps we use every day. You can find Jenna on the web at themiloway.com and on Instagram as @miloseastarwisdom. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pragmaticalchemy/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pragmaticalchemy/support

You can now get connected to the vast network of experts, consultants and coaches who are part of the Climate Farming network. We know that making the transition to profitable regenerative agriculture is hard enough, but without support from people with experience and who understand your unique context, you can waste needless time, money, and effort along the way. So don't do it alone. Just click on the link below and we'll help you find tailored assistance that can fasttrack your transformation and get you where you dream of going.  Click here to be matched with an expert consultant or mentor for your regenerative farm I've touched on this topic briefly in previous interviews, but it bears repeating. There are no easy answers since for most growers who've relied on these inputs for years if not decades, there will need to be a period of transition, even if they chose regenerative management, in which their yields could suffer.Luckily, there are a few well qualified professionals out there with a track record of guiding farmers through the challenge of transitioning their land management practices, and I had the chance to speak to three of them in a special panel discussion. Links: https://www.regenben.com/ https://www.hlhltd.co.uk/ https://soiladvice.com/ https://twitter.com/EdCTBrown https://www.instagram.com/eb_agroecology/ https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/boats-flerds/id1576334053?i=1000531588261  https://www.regenben.com/ https://soiladvice.com/
