Christianity has been met with many challengers in recent times. Of the many groups that criticize Christian beliefs and values, none is more radical than the Jesus Mythicism movement. This radical new atheist movement seeks to dismiss Christianity by disregarding the historicity of Jesus of Nazareth. While Jesus Mythicism holds little to no scholarly support, Jesus Mythicists enjoy a wide base of approval from communities on the internet as they claim that Jesus was not a historical figure, but a mythical figure invented by the church. Ken Humphreys is among the most popular of the Jesus Mythicist spokesmen. Our guest today has debated many from the Jesus Mythicist campaign, including Humphreys. Nick Peters joins us to discuss the flaws of Jesus Mythicism and how the modern Christian can engage those who hold to Jesus Mythicism. Peters studied at Southern Evangelical Seminary and Johnson Bible College. He has worked as the Social Media and Communications Expert at Ratio Christi. Peters is an author and regular blogger at deeperwaters.wordpress.com and hosts a podcast also named Deeper Waters. Join us as we discuss the issue of Jesus Mythicism with Nick Peters. Were the apostles martyred for their faith? Sean McDowell vs Ken Humphreys

The argument that ‘the followers of Jesus wouldn’t have suffered and died for a lie’ is often used as evidence for the resurrection. But in recent years attacks have been mounted on whether the martyrdom accounts of the apostles are reliable. Sean McDowell, author of ‘The Fate of the Apostles’ defends the historicity of the martyrdom accounts of Paul, Peter, James and other early followers. Ken Humphreys, a Jesus mythicist, makes the case that the martyrdom accounts are pious inventions. To begin the summer season of programmes here at TMR, we welcome back Nick Peters of Deeper Waters Christian Ministries, who joins for an in-depth discussion on the subject of Mythicism, of Christ Myth Theory. Was Jesus of Nazareth a real person of history? Or was he, perhaps, originally a mythical character, whose story gradually came to be understood as historical through processes of allegorisation and misunderstanding? Alternatively, was he a Roman invention? With reference to some of the ideas of writers such as Earl Doherty, Richard Carrier, Robert M. Price and Joseph Atwill, we discuss the plausibility of mythicists' attempts to revise the history of Christian origins, and conclude that the hypothesis of Jesus' existence best fits the evidence. We are joined by Christian apologist Nick Peters and atheist author Ken Humphreys for a lively, informative and very friendly debate on the historicity of Jesus. Whatever we may think about Jesus - whether we acknowledge Him as Lord and Saviour, or not - one thing we can surely all be agreed on is that he existed and walked in Palestine 2000 year ago. Not so, according to Ken Humpreys, director of the website JesusNeverExisted.com, who opens the debate defending the propostion that the New Testament Jesus is a fictional character. Arguing against this position is Nick Peters, founder of Deeper Waters Christian Ministries and host of the Deeper Waters Podcast, who maintains that the evidence we have clearly and persuasively indicates that this same Jesus was (and is) a real person of history. While non-Christians may doubt the miracles and resurrection of Jesus, few doubt his actual existence.  However, Ken Humphreys believes the evidence for Jesus' very existence is scant and that Christian belief in him is the result of "late and fake" accounts. JP Holding is a vociferous defender of Christian history and doctrine and believes Ken's scepticism is unfounded and biased. They examine the evidence both in and beyond the Gospels for Jesus' existence.
