Hon tvingades lämna den i krigets gryning, elva år gammal. Vår avkomma är elva år nu och traskar på samma golvparkett som hon för trettiotre år sedan. Tanken att pojken faktiskt kunde ha fötts och bott i staden vi nu besöker, om inte kriget brutit ut, är svindlande och slår mig med full kraft när jag ber honom posera vid ett björkträd som står vid håligheten som en gång i tiden varit min skola. För trettio år sedan en oskyddad och smal björk som darrade i vinden. Nu en mäktig påminnelse om tidens envetna gång.Som barn brukade vi besöka guden Mithras tempel. Man skulle, på grund av gamla vidskepelser, absolut inte röra statyn som visade Mithras muskulösa kropp brottandes med en tjur och en orm. Vi gjorde det ändå. En flygplansraket jämnade hela gatan med marken 1992. Gatan är återställd, det romerska templet från 300-talet inglasat med våra fingeravtryck kvar på Mithras och tjurens kroppar.Vi är omgivna av ruiner, fysiska och föreställda. I Jajce flyter tid och rum samman.Många har skrivit om de olika roller som ruiner kan spela i vår senkapitalistiska samtid. Medan jag guidar min son mellan olika tidsepoker och känner fantomsmärtor av de små spåren jag lämnat i stadens vrår, tänker jag på litteraturvetaren Andreas Huyssens tankar om nostalgi för ruiner. Huyssen menar att vår tids fascination för ruiner egentligen bär på en stilla längtan efter en dåtid som ännu inte hade förlorat sin förmåga att föreställa sig andra framtider. Att blicka tillbaka mot ruiner kan vara ett sätt att ifrågasätta den linjära idén om ständig utveckling. Berlin är för Huyssen ett slags “urban palimpsest” – en stad där historien ligger lager på lager, aldrig helt utplånade men heller aldrig helt intakta. Jajce är min palimpsest.Till vänster ett nytt tidshopp. En söndersprängd stugruin lutar sig mot ett mycket större nybygge på två våningar som i sin tur ligger ett par meter från den medeltida fästningenNär vi var små brukade vi stå på fästningens murar och kasta ner vattenfyllda ballonger. På bilar, folk. Man försökte jaga bort oss, få ifatt oss men vi var som små apor, just tillräckligt snabba och skickliga för att fly undan. Stadens historia var vår lekplats. Vi lekte jage och kurragömma i medeltida torn som använts ömsom för religion, ömsom för tortyr.På plätten inuti själva fästningen anordnades det fredskonserter före kriget. Vi stod på det eviga gräset, väntandes medan 1990-talets folkmusik ekade och studsade gentemot dess medeltida väggar. Varje armé som hade ockuperat Jajce under dess historia brukade hänga upp sin segerflagga. Även under 1990-talet. Under fästningen bodde vi som smekte dess stenar och klättrade på dess väggar i tron att vår framtid skulle vara annorlunda än den som fanns före oss. Vattenballonger ersattes av granater, vattenpölar på gatan färgades röda.Pojken vill höra allt. Ställer många frågor. Om kriget, om livet, släktingarna. Och jag svarar, förklarar, berättar. Han lyssnar mer koncentrerat än vad jag någonsin hade kunnat vänta mig. Och ett abstrakt provisorium som efter flykten har varit mitt liv får verkliga konturer på ett annat sätt än tidigare. Jag förkroppsligas framför pojkens ögon. Mitt liv är inte muttrande sammanfattningar längre. Berättelserna har fått en fysisk inramning. Där spelade vi basketen, nu dribblar han framför den skeva korgen. Där satt vi på trapporna, rädda för de äldre. Nu sitter han på det översta trappsteget. En liten konung i sin pappas minnesrike. Dåtiden har materialiserats och fått samtida beklädnad.Skisser får liv. Det jag antytt när jag pratat om min barndom för honom i Göteborg får här verkliga konsekvenser. Här är spåren efter granatsplitter, här sköt krypskytten. Där föll de mäktiga raketerna som slog ut alla fönster i hela grannskapet. Här är gatan som såg ut som Hiroshima. Där fastnade jag med mitt stora huvud i balkongräcket. Där, på balkongräcket, klättrade min granne Edhem från balkongen under för att skjuta till mig en choklad eller kexförpackning.Vi hittar ett peacemärke som hans pappa sprayat på en smutsig vägg, precis innan kriget skulle bryta ut. En futtig detalj på en av stadens fula fasader, för mig ett litet vittnesmålsärr om att jag funnits här. Han går på mina gator, gör dem till sina. På bosniska heter det ”srce mi je puno”, mitt hjärta är fullt.Och ja, parallellt som jag berättar för sonen om hur det kom sig att vi sprayade olika symboler, tänker jag på den pojken, något år äldre än vad sonen är idag, som inte ens kunde föreställa sig den framtiden som väntar på honom bakom hörnet. Minnets ruiner reser sig som spökstäder var vi än befinner oss i Jajce.Under vår sista dag i Bosnien besöker vi kyrkogården i staden Banja Luka, där min mormor, hennes syster och deras föräldrar ligger begravda. Min mammas aska är sedan nio år tillbaka omfamnad av Uddevallas blöta jord. Mammas systers aska ligger i Vancouver. En evigt pågående utspriddhet, som fortsätter även i döden.Bodil Malmsten skriver i dikten Sorg: Före - efteråt. I've been pretty proud about the journey we've taken together learning about the Indo-Europeans. The linguistics versus the cultures versus the religions. We've done a lot of comparing and contrasting, and a lot of deep dive exploration. But we've spent a lot more time on the European side of the term. Sol Invictus (December 25) - Sol Invictus, or the "Unconquered Sun," was a festival dedicated to the sun god Sol. Celebrated on December 25th, this festival marked the rebirth of the sun as the days began to lengthen. It was a significant holiday in the Roman Empire and is thought to have influenced the choice of December 25th for Christmas. Kalikai (December 15 - January 15) - Kalikai was an ancient festival celebrated in the Middle East, including parts of Mesopotamia and Anatolia. The festival was associated with the rebirth of the sun and the end of the darkest period of the year. It involved celebrations, feasting, and offerings to gods and deities associated with the sun and fertility. Feast of the Nativity of Mithras (December 25) - Mithras was a deity from the Persian tradition who was adopted into Roman religion. His birthday was celebrated on December 25. The festival of Mithras celebrated the birth of the god of light and truth. It was part of a broader Mithraic tradition that was influential in the Roman Empire and shared themes with other December festivals. Wild Hunt (December) - In Norse mythology, the Wild Hunt was associated with the Yule season and was believed to be a ghostly procession led by a god or spirit. December Modern Holidays: Yule (December 21) - Yule, or the Winter Solstice, marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. It is a celebration of the rebirth of the sun and the gradual return of longer daylight hours. Dongzhi Festival (December 21 or 22) - The Dongzhi Festival, or Winter Solstice Festival, is celebrated in China and other East Asian countries. Christmas (December 25) - Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated holidays worldwide, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is observed by Christians and also celebrated by many non-Christians.
