Charlie Osborne, Editor-At-Large for Cybercrime Magazine, joins hosts Paul John Spaulding, Kyle Haglund, VP, Audio Engineering at Cybercrime Magazine, and Sam White, Video Producer at Cybercrime Magazine, to discuss the UK's Online Safety Act and its impact on gamers. • For more on cybersecurity, visit us at https://cybersecurityventures.com
First: the new era of censorshipA year ago, John Power notes, the UK was consumed by race riots precipitated by online rumours about the perpetrator of the Southport atrocity. This summer, there have been protests, but ‘something is different'. With the introduction of the Online Safety Act, ‘the government is exerting far greater control over what can and can't be viewed online'. While the act ‘promises to protect minors from harmful material', he argues that it is ‘the most sweeping attempt by any liberal democracy to bring the online world under the control of the state'.Implemented and defended by the current Labour government, it is actually the result of legislation passed by the Conservatives in 2023 – which Labour did not support at the time, arguing it didn't go far enough. So how much of a danger is the Act to free speech in Britain?John joined the podcast to discuss further alongside former Conservative minister Steve Baker, MP from 2010-24, and who was one of the biggest critics of the bill within the Conservative Party at the time.Next: should we be worried about protests against migrants? This week, outside a hotel in Epping, groups amassed to protest against the migrants housed there, with counter-protestors appearing in turn. Tommy Robinson might not have appeared in the end, but the Spectator's Max Jeffrey did, concluding that the protests were ultimately ‘anticlimactic'.Nevertheless, the protests have sparked debate about the motivations of those speaking out against the migrants – are there legitimate concerns voiced by locals, or are the protests being manipulated by figures on the political fringes? And what do the protests tell us about community tensions in the UK? Max joined the podcast to discuss alongside the editor of Spiked Tom Slater. And finally: why are ‘romantasy' novels so popular?Lara Brown writes in the magazine this week about the phenomenon of the genre ‘romantasy', which mixes romance with fantasy. While ‘chick-lit' is nothing new, Lara argues that this is ‘literature taken to its lowest form', emblematic of the terminally online young people who consume it. Nevertheless, it is incredibly popular and is credited by publishers as boosting the British fiction industry to over £1 billion. To unpack the genre's popularity, Lara joined the podcast, alongside Sarah Maxwell, the founder of London's first romance-only bookshop Saucy Books, based in Notting Hill.Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast.Produced by Patrick Gibbons and Megan McElroy.

This conversation also touches on the significance of silence and scripture in healing, the surprises encountered in the faith journey, and the hopes for Macho's book as a guide for others navigating their own spiritual paths.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Context of Control Alt Belief08:05 Unlearning Misconceptions About God14:38 Silence, Scripture, and Healing19:49 Surprises on the Faith Journey25:36 The Journey of Writing and Self-Discovery34:10 Crowdfunding Challenges and Surprises45:09 Hopes for the Book and Its Impact This is a public episode. When a schoolteacher's borrowed BBC computer began displaying mysterious messages from a 16th-century scholar and beings from the year 2109, it sparked one of England's most bewildering paranormal cases.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateIN THIS EPISODE: In Victorian London, a grisly murder case involving Maria and Frederick Manning shocked society and caught the attention of Charles Dickens himself. What began as a love triangle turned into a chilling tale of greed, betrayal, and murder, culminating in a public execution that would challenge the very nature of capital punishment in Great Britain. (The Murderous Mannings) *** In 1720, amidst a perilous pirate attack on the Atlantic, a newborn's cry changed the course of destiny. Ocean-Born Mary, christened by buccaneers and gifted with a bolt of green silk, would grow from a maritime legend into a symbol of courage and resilience in colonial New England, her extraordinary birth weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction that continues to captivate imaginations centuries later. (A Pirate's Godchild, Ocean-Born Mary) *** On the morning of June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates shocked the nation by drowning her five children, one by one, in the family bathtub. Years of untreated mental illness, compounded by religious fanaticism and postpartum psychosis, culminated in this unimaginable tragedy. Was it the work of a tortured mind, or something darker at play? (Did The Devil Make Her Do It?) *** Deep in the ancient folds of the Appalachian Mountains, where time seems to slow and shadows linger, legends have taken root for millennia. These peaks have become a breeding ground for supernatural tales that blend seamlessly with the landscape. The sheer age and untamed nature of Appalachia have given birth to a rich tapestry of myths, from the Mothman, to ghosts, to the Devil himself. (Modern Mythology and Ancient Appalachia) *** In the heart of Preston, Ladywell Street is infamous for a chilling spectral presence capable of shifting forms—from eerie footsteps to a blood-soaked apparition known as the Bannister Doll. Once a beautiful young woman, Dolly Bannister met a tragic death at the hands of her father, a punishment for a crime she didn't commit. Now, her restless spirit seeks retribution, haunting the streets and striking fear into anyone who dares to cross her path. (The Haunting of Ladywell Street) *** In 1984, a sleepy English village became the unlikely stage for a mind-bending mystery when a schoolteacher's computer began receiving messages from a man claiming to be from 1546. As past and present collided through a BBC Micro, Ken Webster and his friends found themselves entangled in a web of Tudor English, future prophecies, and inexplicable phenomena that would challenge everything they thought they knew about time and technology. The announced episode number is incorrect. Episode 537 was injected into the podcast in light of the immediacy of the situation. The following is a rework of the Charles Spurgeon Evening Devotion for June 22which was first published in 1866. The estimated writing year for June 22 devotion would have been Circa 1865 or early 1866. His words written down by candle or lamplight approximately 160 years ago are soberingly impactful and apply to us at this very moment in history. As soon as I read it I knew I had to shine the spotlight on its message. Titus 2:11-12 -"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age." The sober life isn't just a clean life. Integrity begins in quiet places. This episode explains how we restore integrity in worship and leadership. Let this series stir a holy dissatisfaction with the norm. Let it ignite a longing for something more beautiful, more sober, and more real. Christ is worthy of a consecrated Church. Welcome back to part two of our series. In just the last few days of this writing, a major exposé dropped—documented by dozens of interviews—revealing deep moral compromise tied directly to sexual promiscuity along with the habitual use of alcohol by one of Christian music's most recognizable voices. This story, as heartbreaking as it is, isn't an isolated one. Influence is a sacred responsibility. But in the Christian music industry, we're watching that influence turn into indulgence...Disclaimer: This podcast series reflects the personal spiritual convictions and commentary of the host. Welcome to this first episode in our 3-part series, “The Bar in the Room.” In this series, we're not here to make alcohol the chief of sins. We're here to hold a light up to a pattern that's spreading unchecked in Christian music culture—one that is quietly shifting the atmosphere from hospitality to hedonism. 1 Peter 5:8 calls us to be alert, to be sober-minded. Charles Spurgeon wrote a profound statement in his evening devotion for May 7th: "We would not wish to enter heaven till our work is done, and it may be that we are yet ordained to minister light to souls benighted in the wilderness of sin." That word "benighted" sparked my curiosity. It is a power-packed Old-English word that paints a haunting image in you soul. I pray that this podcast moves you to action to in being a light bearer of Jesus Christ to those who are not just people walking through the dark. These are people who have become part of it. When you awaken to the full truth about the condition of lost souls without Christ, it will overwhelm you with compassion to move out of your comfort zone, beyond yourself, into the wilderness of sin to reach those whose instincts, fears, and MEMORIES are TRAINED IN THE NIGHT.DONATE You can help support this podcast by clicking our secure PayPal account. Everyone braced for digital doom at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2000—but instead of chaos, we got... nothing. In this episode, we revisit the Y2K bug, the global panic it sparked, and the anticlimactic quiet that followed. Was the hype overblown, or did we narrowly avoid disaster thanks to behind-the-scenes heroes? Let's unpack the world's most boring apocalypse.
This episode focuses on a serious but often overlooked spiritual danger: when faith slowly turns into presumption. At first glance, they look alike. Faith believes God can move mountains. Faith trusts His promises. Faith stands firm. But presumption hijacks that language and runs with it… without relationship, without reverence, and without surrender. In Charles Spurgeon's Morning by Morning devotion for May 25th , and he writes: “It is not faith to test the Lord, and expect that He will deliver when we are acting out of step with His will. Faith is obedient; presumption is self-willed.”Let that sink in. Faith is obedient. Presumption is self-willed. In many circles today there's no room for sanctification, no willingness to be pruned. Just momentum, branding, and hustle — baptized in Bible verses. Charles Spurgeon reminds us that the promises of God are not licenses for recklessness, but assurances for the obedient heart.DONATE You can help support this podcast by clicking our secure PayPal account.
