Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued Resurrection week by discussing identity in Christ. As followers of Christ, we need to have our identity in Him, or else we’ll try to find our identity in other things. We turned to Romans 6:8-10, where the apostle Paul tells us that when Christ died, we died with Him so that we can live with Him now. We have been given new life because of His sacrifice. Therefore, we should live for Him. We also had J. Warner Wallace talk about how he went from an atheist to a believer after investigating the supernatural existence of Jesus. J. is a Dateline featured cold-case homicide detective, a national speaker, podcast host, and a best-selling author. He also serves as a Senior Fellow at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview and as an adjunct professor of apologetics at Talbot School of Theology, Gateway Seminary, and Southern Evangelical Seminary. He opens up about how that love transformed his life, healed his heart, and set him on a mission to bring the good news to a world desperate for hope.We dive into: • His journey from the NFL to pastoring a thriving, multiethnic church • How sports taught him about leadership, discipline, and faith • The way God's love changes how we see ourselves, our families, and our purpose • Why everyday believers are called to be everyday missionaries • What it means to be “lit up with love” and how the gospel fuels our witnessDr. Gray reminds us that the nations are no longer just “out there” they're right here, and the church has a calling to welcome and love people from every background. He challenges us to see the mission field in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and everyday relationships. This conversation is full of wisdom, encouragement, and a deep passion for Jesus. In this episode, I am joined by Melissa Dougherty, author of the upcoming book Happy Lies. Melissa shares her incredible testimony of how God rescued her from depression, spiritual deception, and counterfeit gospels. Growing up in a Presbyterian home, she encountered the Gospel at a party as a teenager, which completely transformed her life. However, her early faith journey was shaped by a legalistic church and a hunger for intellectual answers about Christianity. Melissa reveals how she fell into the alluring teachings of New Thought spirituality, which disguised itself with biblical language and concepts like the Law of Attraction and health-and-wealth theology. Through years of study and God's grace, she realized the dangers of these teachings and is now on a mission to equip Christians to discern truth from deception. In her book Happy Lies, Melissa exposes how New Thought spirituality has infiltrated modern Christian culture, distorting the Gospel and replacing it with self-centered ideologies. If you've ever felt unsettled by the prosperity gospel, progressive Christianity, or teachings that seem “almost biblical,” this conversation is for you. Key Takeaways: Melissa's powerful testimony of encountering the Gospel and finding hope in her darkest moments. What New Thought spirituality is and how it deceptively uses Christian language to mislead believers. The connection between New Thought teachings and the prosperity gospel. Why knowing your Bible is the best defense against spiritual deception. Join us as Melissa unpacks the importance of knowing Scripture deeply and standing firm in the truth of the Gospel. We live in an era dominated by subjective morality and individualized spirituality. How do we provide biblical, God-honoring responses? Stephanie sits down with Christian apologist and popular YouTuber Melissa Dougherty, who utilizes theological insights alongside her deeply personal experiences to dismantle the seductive façade of the New Thought movement. She describes this philosophy as “a stealthy message of encouragement to live your truth, seek happiness, find your identity through sexual freedom, and think your desires into existence. Often with the name of Jesus attached as an endorsement.” GIWEAWAY COMING UP! In our February newsletter, we will give away THREE copies of "Happy Lies" in partnership with Melissa and her publisher, Zondervan. We will also give 3 copies of our next January book interview (airing January 28, episode 376). So make sure to be signed up to our newsletter for a chance to win. Sign up here: https://www.gospelspice.com/signup In her groundbreaking debut, Happy Lies: How a Movement You (Probably) Never Heard Of Shaped Our Self-Obsessed World, Melissa Dougherty, an ex-New Thought follower herself, deconstructs the myths propagated by secular self-empowerment and affirmation movements. She explains how New Thought concepts like toxic affirmation and the “Law of Attraction” intersect with the prosperity gospel. She highlights how New Thought influences are subtly embedded in progressive Christianity and the gender identity crisis, and even how this movement is foundational to the weakened theology used in “Seeker-friendly” churches. Dougherty urges her audience to reflect deeply on these beliefs, encouraging them to discern contemporary culture's pervasive lies and to seek a more authentic understanding of the gospel. With clarity and a touch of compassionate snark, Melissa examines New Thought's appealing yet distorted spirituality. She warns of its pervasive impact on modern theology, emphasizing how the movement's focus on self-authority and personal experience often overshadows the biblical narrative. New Thought ideology subtly infiltrates contemporary Christian thought, presenting a false gospel that masquerades as a more open-minded, tolerant, and loving interpretation of Jesus and the Bible. Melissa recounts her epiphany during a hiatus from seminary, where her extensive readings unveiled a distinction between "New Thought" and "New Age." Despite their overlaps, these movements stand alone in intent and belief structures. Her desire to educate and spark dialogue about New Thought arose from the absence of evangelical discourse on the topic, with only a handful of scholars like Craig Hazen touching on it. Determined to spotlight this under-discussed issue, she writes a book laden with historical contexts, practical definitions, and a respectful yet critical analysis of New Thought within a Christian framework. Melissa describes New Thought as a metaphysical reinterpretation of Christianity, where the Scriptures are sometimes twisted into allegorical tales akin to self-help doctrines. Melissa coined the term "metamistagorical," combining metaphysical, mystical, and allegorical elements, to describe New Thought. She reflects on how figures like Oprah Winfrey and Joel Osteen intermingle Christian identification with mystical attributes to create a semblance of spiritual alignment. Melissa stresses that while New Thought is frequently confused with New Age philosophies, it poses a unique threat to believers: “New Thought ideas will deceive Christians before New Age ideas ever will. […] You've probably adopted some of its teachings, and you don't even realize it.” Unlike New Age's openly mystical practices, New Thought often acts as a metaphysical Christianity, making its influence sneakier and more deceptive. Dougherty concludes with a heartfelt prayer for her readers: “I hope you can't unsee [New Thought]. I hope it stirs something within you, something refusing to be ignored. Now, go tell others. Tell them the Joyful Truth so they don't fall for Happy Lies. ” In Happy Lies, highly regarded Christian apologist and ex-New Ager Melissa Dougherty . . . Tackles the frustrations surrounding the rise of pop spirituality and “self-actualization,” even within Christianity Exposes the deceptions of New Thought—a movement centered on positive thinking, mental healing, self-worship, and spiritual empowerment Counters subjective, “me”-focused platitudes with objective truths that dispel spiritual confusion and bring peace to anxious minds Provides practical methods to uproot the subtle, mystical, and insidious spiritual beliefs that dilute the core message of Christianity Clarifies how to recognize the misleading spiritual practices infiltrating modern Christianity and reject them to embrace the beauty of an authentic Christian life MORE ABOUT “HAPPY LIES” In this groundbreaking book, popular apologist Melissa Dougherty helps us understand how our society got to be so toxically subjective, why endless positivity is inherently destructive, and how we can live with faithful truth and genuine love in these self-obsessed times. Have you ever wondered how we ended up in a world where personal feelings could become the authority for reality? Or why so many of us are on a relentless pursuit for happiness yet somehow feel more exhausted and sadder than ever? You're not alone. Melissa deftly traces the roots of today's social chaos back to a little-known (but very influential) 1800s philosophy known as New Thought. A former follower of its teachings, Melissa provides clarity and compassion mixed with a dash of loving snark as she exposes New Thought's deceptions and its many concerning tendrils within the church and our "self-help" culture. You'll be shocked, grieved, and encouraged as you learn: How you can experience true freedom, hope, and peace instead of the world's counterfeits How an anti-God ideology so easily hijacked Christian-sounding ideas Why thinking positively is entirely different from the unbiblical and burdensome "positive thought" movement Why fake "authenticity" short-circuits real redemption How understanding the New Thought mindset can help us share our faith more effectively Uncover a dangerous ideology that nearly everyone has met, yet few of us can name, in order to better understand our culture and joyfully live faithful to the gospel that is so much better than our world's Happy Lies. In this video, I'm taking a deep dive into the episode behind a well-known clip of Oprah that's been widely shared in Christian circles. It's sparked a lot of discussion about her beliefs and where they stand in relation to Christianity. But I believe there's more to this clip than what's on the surface.I go over the majority of the episode, show what you didn't see, analyze Oprah and the panel's beliefs, and explore the spiritual questions raised, giving a lot of commentary on what I would consider to be unrecognized New Thought beliefs. This is not just about Oprah or another "Oprah EXPOSED" video. This is about something bigger—a set of beliefs that isn't going anywhere and I promise you at some point in your Christian walk, you'll be confronted with these arguments and beliefs this panel puts forth. I want you to be equipped. On top of this, I also give some (maybe) unpopular opinions about the interaction between Oprah and an outspoken audience member. I thought this would be a shorter video, but… that just didn't happen. Even for how long this turned out, I still could have spent another hour (or more) analyzing this episode and the clip in question.

There is no quick or easy answers to the questions and doubts people have about Christianity. If you have experienced a season of doubt or if you know someone who has or is passing through such a time, we often wonder what say or what to do. We wonder if we've been deceived or if we haven't thought through everything we should have. From there, Gerard spent decades working in pastoral ministry and studying under some of the greatest Evangelical teachers including the late Dr. Norman Geisler at Southern Evangelical Seminary and Dr. Francis Beckwith at Baylor University. Both Dr. Geisler – and SES itself – and Dr. Beckwith figure prominently in Figurelli's journey – Figurelli was working as a Teaching Assistant under Beckwith when Beckwith had his own return to the Catholicism of his upbringing. What is the chief end of man? For many today in our postmodern culture, it seems to be to glorify the authentic self and enjoy it for as long as you can. Scripture has warned us that in latter times, people will become lovers of themselves. Today, the self sits at the center of the social-media movement known as "deconstruction." Our guests again this week Alisa Childers and Tim Barnet, help us break down and understand the foundational and contradictory aspects of this anti-Christian phenomenon and how we can intelligibly respond to it.Alisa Childers: As a lifelong church-goer, follower of Jesus, and former CCM recording artist with the Dove award-winning group ZOEgirl, Alisa experienced a period of profound doubt about her faith in her mid-thirties. This questioning launched an investigation and her journey from unreasoned doubt into a vibrant, rational and informed faith. She is the author of  Another Gospel, Live Your Truth, and coauthor of The Deconstruction of Christianity. She hosts the Alisa Childers podcast. Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden, human beings have been walking away from God. Call it backsliding, falling away, or deconverting, the terms are all a variation on the them of unbelief. The popular term in social media today is "deconstructing." Our guests this week and next, Alisa Childers and Tim Barnett, are authors of a new book, The Deconstruction of Christianity. *Interesting Fact of the Week: What animal can make 276 facial expressions? (Don't ask how they are tallied...)? Surprisingly, it's not the obvious answer: the camel. Tune it to find out!   *Why Are We Here? This week we ask the question that philosophers, adolescents and too many college professors struggle with, many for a lifetime. And we ask it of the Creation Science Field writ large, and the Real Science Radio ministry!   *Fred Checks the Facts: Hear Fred's testimony and how creation science (and Bob Enyart Live) were a part of his conversion to Christ!   *Train Up a Child: In Doug's testimony he cites the fact his mom and dad taught him a literal interpretation of Genesis from the cradle as instrumental in leading him to salvation.   *And on Bass... Real Science Radio welcomes Kurt Rushlow, Christian, Navy Vet and Bassist for ThumpWhistle in San Jose. He's currently working on a degree at Southern Evangelical Seminary.  Kurt is known as an amateur apologist, a Bible Believer, and an autodidact.   It's telethon month! Today's day #12 and we're looking for $25,000 to build up a full-fledged media team. You may have noticed we didn't have a single telethon last year, because of supporters like you who have given us stability! But now, we're looking to go bigger and better. We need your support which will help us get out more and better content in the years to come. Not only will we be putting out more content, but this will also allow us to promote the entire Bob Enyart Library of content. Just like how C.S. Lewis' ministry was magnified 1,000-fold after his death, we believe Bob's ministry will be too. To make this dream a reality, head over to our store and make a donation, purchase a product or sign up for a monthly subscription. (All monthly charges are multiplied by 10, then applied towards our telethon goal).   *The Dinos Take it!: Hear how one our favorite topics, Dinosaur soft tissue was one piece of evidence that helped lead a fellow like Kurt to seriously consider the truth of the Bible, God's Law, and GOOD NEWS of the offer of salvation from Jesus Christ.

#177: Investigate Christianity with J. Warner Wallace

This week on Real Talk with Rachael, I'm speaking with J. Warner Wallace. He is a Dateline featured Cold-Case Detective, Author, Speaker, Senior Fellow at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, and Adjunct Professor of Apologetics at Talbot School of Theology (Biola University) and Southern Evangelical Seminary. Key Points from Our Conversation: As a detective, J. Warner couldn't commit to Christianity without being convinced it was objectively true. In his book Cold-Case Christianity, he applies ten common rules of evidence he used as a non-believer to make the case for Christianity. There are two broad categories of evidence - direct and indirect. Direct evidence includes an eyewitness account; broad (or circumstantial) is everything else, including what is there and what's missing. They are not different in terms of quality. You can make a solid case with completely indirect evidence, but we have an unreasonable expectation of evidence. Jesus was an evidentialist. He provided both forms of evidence through several eyewitness accounts and through the miracles he performed. Faith isn't blind. The authors of the New Testament were eyewitnesses to Jesus and He stayed with his disciples 40 days after the resurrection as irrefutable evidence. If you examine the gospels, you will determine that what they say about Jesus is true. But if you want to allow that truth to change you, you have to examine what the New Testament says about you. There is one factor that contributes to flourishing – humility. That's why it's vital that the first step into Christianity is submission. Let's Get Real Practical: Lean into whatever form of knowing or believing in God that makes you uncomfortable – experiential or evidential Connect with J.
