The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
"It's time to stand up, with eyes open, ears down to the ground. A change is long overdue. So, wake up. Question everything. Are you awake?"—One by One (2014) For the 19th TMR Movie Roundtable we welcome back our good friends Frank Johnson and Antony Rotunno for a three-way discussion on the cult British "truth movement" film One by One (2014), starring the well-loved (and much-missed) comedian and actor Rik Mayall, written and directed by Diane Jessie Miller. A young woman, Dion, is befriended by an unconventional group of people while she's working in a UK town cafe. Although her policeman boyfriend is not happy about this, because he thinks she should aspire to greater things than waitressing and considers her new pals too idealistic and eccentric, Dion sticks with her friends because they bring a fresh sense of joy and peace into her life. But when tragedy strikes, Dion's life is turned upsidedown; and thus begins her journey "down the rabbit hole" as the group reveals to her the unsettling truths that they have come to understand. Incredulous at first, Dion eventually comes to the same realisation, and the film closes with (what seems to be) the initial stages of the anticipated calamity. Join us as we discuss the production, consider it in relation to the so-called "truth movement", and ask what the filmmakers might have meant by admonishing audiences to "Wake up, now!" It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Tariq Habash, former senior official at the Dept. of Education under President Biden, founder & director of the organization A New Policy, to discuss the Trump administration's actions taken regarding student loans. Then, he speaks with Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease specialist, founder of community radio station 102.3 WHIV-FM, and creator of the NoiseFilter podcast, to discuss the recent measles outbreaks in Texas & New Mexico. First, Sam runs through updates on Europe's retaliatory tariffs, public backlash to Trump's handling of the economy, the House's passage of a Continuing Resolution as the fight moves to the Senate, Trump's slashing of the DOE, Trump's $100m Tesla deal, Trump's disappearing of Columbia student and permanent US resident Mahmoud Khalil, Ukraine's support for a ceasefire, the DOJ's public corruption unit, and cuts to NOAA and the EPA, before expanding on the insane debate over the GOP's “clean” Continuing Resolution, and why Senate Democrats are so willing to hand over the US government to Elon Musk. Tariq Habash then joins, first stepping back to walk through his experience working in Biden's DOE before leaving in protest at the start of last year over the President's support of Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza, and unpack why the internal barriers to policy work so pushed him to establishing “A New Policy.” Moving forward, Habash explores why, despite Democrats' desires, the issue of the ethnic cleansing of Gaza will not go away under Trump, with his dreams to fully redevelop the Gaza strip in his own immaged backed by his revamping of Israel's assault and a domestic crackdown (including full-on dissappearings) of pro-Palestinian activism, with the recent abduction of Mahmoud Khalil working as Trump's perfect crime to wage war on the rights of Black and Brown permanant residents – capitalizing on Democratic Leadership's commitment to genocide to minimize dissent from the opposition. Shifting to the domestic policy side of things, Tariq brings Sam through Trump's attack on the DOE, walking through the department's long history as a Civil Rights agency, before diving deep into Trump's attack on the student loan and debt relief programs, which explicitly seek to target public service workers, and folks that work with trans folks, immigrants, or Palestinians. Wrapping up, Habash looks to the devastating impact Trump's DOE cuts will have on special education in the US, and what to make of our major educational institutions fully acquiesing to the regime. Dr. MarkAlain Dery then jumps right into a clear assessment of RFK's myriad destructive actions since being named HHS Secretary, from his lack of awareness about the ongoing measles crisis, to his cancelling of ACIP, and his backing of the all-around shutdown of any federal public health communications and much of its funding. After expanding on the fundamental problem with focusing on mitigating rather than preventative care, Dr. Dery walks Sam through the importance of a public health regime when it comes to addressing large-scale health issues facing the American public, pulling from his own recent work in New Orleans, before looking toward the biggest threats he sees facing the US' weakened public health infrastructure, including the threat of an ever-mutating bird flu, and the recent bubblings of hantavirus. Wrapping up, Dr. MarkAlain Dery reemphasizes that we have the capacity to fight against these threats, despite doubts about the current administration. And in the Fun Half: Sam dives into the outcome of the Democratic Party and mainstream media's complete acquiesence to the right wing's transphobic fearmongering, with Trump's regime implementing a full scale erasure and attack on trans identity and community, looking to Rep. Keating's complete takedown of Rep. Keith Self's blantant and direct misgendering of Rep. Sarah McBride. After expanding on Trump's recent $100m commercial deal with Tesla, and diving deep into Krystal Ball's coverage of Tesla's fraud allegations out of Canada, Sam and the MR Team dive deep into Sam's debate over social security on Jubilee. Tabatha from Central Mass calls in to unpack what trans care for your child actually looks like, plus, your calls and IMs! Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Keon West, visiting professor of political science at the London School of Economics, to discuss his recent book The Science of Racism: Everything You Need To Know But Probably Don't-Yet. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Canadian prime ministership, the GOP's impending government shutdown, Trump's attack on Columbia University, Columbia University's wilful aiding of Trump's disappearing of a student activist, Israel's cutting of electricity o Gaza, Canadian tariffs, Trump's egg problem, Trump's recession problem, the Trump administration's legal woes, DOGE's unsurprising attack on Child Support, and the continuing spread of measles, also highlighting the Trump Administration's attempts to preemptively defend the recession and economic chaos they are about to reign on the US (and the world). Dr. Keon West then joins, diving right into his data-driven approach to highlighting the existence of racism, and how we can (and have) run experiments to test for differential treatment on the grounds of race (and nothing but race), highlighting various experiments displaying blantant racial descrimination in hiring practices, pre-elementary child education, and the medical industry, as he, Sam, and Emma walk through the minimal role the race of the descriminator plays in these situations, and why, despite mainstream narratives, many of the biases being displayed are concious and active. After expanding the conversation to include the extensive data behind the racial descrimination in contemporary American policing, and unpacking the lie of the “Black on Black crime” narrative, Dr. West steps back to tackle the ebb and flow of racial descrimination over time, with the last four hundred years seeing a drastic evolution in racial biases, tracing periods of particularly extreme racism to both economic straing and the platforming and normalization of this bigotry by sociopolitical leaders. Dr. Keon West, Sam, and Emma also discuss the importance of centering on society's overwhelming discomfort with racism (even when exercising it), what it means to do something about racism, and what to make of the fraudulant attacks on the admittedly problematic policy of DEI, before wrapping up by highlighting the role of clear data analysis – rather than vague appeals to authority – in helping push people away from bigotry. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the Right-wing media apparatus explain exactly why skyrocketing egg prices aren't Trump's fault – unfortunately contradicting much of their coverage over the last few years – also tackling Trump's attack on the law firms attempting to challenge him, and the GOP's ongoing push to pass a continuing resolution that would allow them to make cuts to the budget without negotiation. They also parse through Democratic leadership's ongoing struggle to act like an opposition party, contrasting the likes of Schumer and Jeffries with Bernie's astoundingly successful tour campaigning against the Trump Administration, before highlighting the Trump Adminstration's disappearing of a permanent US resident (with some help from Columbia University) and Gov Newsome's recent bigoted-bridge-building session with Charlie Kirk, with some help from Emma's apperance on MSNBC over this weekend. After briefly fact-checking Jimmy Dore's recent climate-denial musings, they wrap up by touching on the potential hacking of Twitter by activist group Anonymous, plus, your IMs! The Masonic Roundtable - Freemasonry Today for Today's Freemasons
DOGE has created waves (good and bad) looking for improvements in the U.S. Government. Similarly, even large organizations such as Freemasonry could stand to optimize and find efficiencies based on how their per capita assessments are being used. What would that look like? Can we do parts of that today?
The week of February 26, 2025 on The Metallica Report… We pick back up with Steff and Renée, who are still immersed in Metallica's archival vault. In this episode, they travel down a James Hetfield rabbit hole filled with original notebooks, lyrics, doodles, and more. Reveling in the energy emanating from the pages, our hosts seize the opportunity to get an intimate read on the frontman from a much younger season, noting how intentional his creative force has always been. And to his delight, Steff stumbles upon another blast from his own past, though he seems to remember it differently. The week of February 12, 2025 on The Metallica Report… We speak with the Metallica HQ Studio Runners—Jackson Langford, Jack Ketchum, Alex Coltharp, and Dana Lindstrom—about their tasks and duties around the building and beyond. From massive lunch runs to damaging cars and walls (with a purpose, of course) and from restringing guitars to joining the touring crew, some assignments are definitely less predictable than others. Plus, as you've come to know, there's a lot of talent flowing through the confines of HQ beyond Metallica itself, and these runners are no exception. We hear a bit about Low Levee (Jackson and Alex's band) and Milk For The Angry (Dana's band), both entrenched in the local Bay Area music scene on top of being favorites among HQ staff. We also find out how Jack, a visual artist and screen printer specializing in classic-style and retro rock posters and t-shirts, helps James Hetfield level up his art supply stash. The week of February 5, 2025 on The Metallica Report… Legendary music critic David Fricke details his decades-long journey with Metallica, writing some of rock journalism's most unflinching and detailed stories about the band through the pages of Rolling Stone magazine. Beginning with their first full-assignment encounter on the Damaged Justice tour, David shares observations of Metallica's unique fan connection and growth as the Four Horsemen ascended. It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by Van Lathan of the Higher Learning podcast! First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's dropping popularity (thanks to Elon), budding GOP criticism of the Trump/Musk regime, Trump's dismantling of the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force, Trump's funding freeze and mass firing, Elon's CPAC appearance, RFK's anti-vax maneuvers, Texas' (definitely unrelated) measles outbreak, Israel's best attempts to kill their Gaza ceasefire deal, and the confirmation of Kash Patel, also watching a flush-red MAGA district lay into Rep. Rich McCormick over Trump's insane executive coup. Mike Figueredo then joins, jumping right into his initial reactions to the Trump/Musk regime's sweeping destruction of the US government, before stepping back to expand a little on the particular insanity that is being a Democratic constituent at this point, with the overwhelming backlash to the impotence of Democratic Congresspeople finally boiling over at town halls and Democratic Leadership's media events. After expanding on the genuinely shocking rate at which Trump is executing the Project 2025 blueprint, Figueredo and Emma look to the impact of the Trump regime on emboldening cultures of bigotry in the US, from DHS' discrimination against queer folks to the suicide of a young Latina child after facing rampant anti-immigrant bigotry, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the need for the Democratic Party to advance an agenda of actual political change if they want to escape from the fascist quagmire of the last few election cycles. Van Lathan and Emma then dive deep into the state (surprisingly positive) of the Leftist media ecosystem, the utter failure of the Democratic Party to identify, speak to, or govern for their base, and why MAGA's obsession with liberal defectors is so enchanting to reactionary media figures. Lathan implores Emma to dip her podcasting toes into pop culture, before wrapping up by touching on what he learned from covering Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Nora from Austin about Tim Pool's fiery foray into NASCAR sponsorships, before touching on Elon's CPAC meltdown and Rep. Greg Cesar's pushback to Elon's labor abuses. Kyle from Long Island unpacks RFK's lies about cell phone radiation, Leonard Peltier returns home, and conservatives help the media ponder whether a measles outbreak is actually that big of a deal, plus, your calls and IMs! The Masonic Roundtable - Freemasonry Today for Today's Freemasons
What is the object of our affection? Let's discuss the physical, quantum, spiritual, philosophical, and symbolic aspect of the one thing we are all striving for. Light.
The week of February 19, 2025 on The Metallica Report… Led by Inveniem archivist Ally Bace, Steff and Renée enter the Metallica vault to explore physical pieces of the band's history, including master tapes, handwritten notes, diaries, clothing, and so much more. Ally discusses her journey to becoming an archivist, the forensic process of handling the artifacts, and the emotional power these pieces hold, something Steff encounters when faced with an item that conjures an experience three decades old. We also get some insight into which Metallica members are the primary collectors and how Inveniem and The Black Box work together. Finally, we stumble upon our inspiration for this week's Metallica Report Spotify playlist. The Metallica Report – your official, weekly guide for all things Metallica, straight from the source. It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Molly White, crypto & tech researcher & critic, author at the websites Citation Needed & Web3 Is Going Great, to discuss her recent writing on the Trump administration and its relationship to the crypto industry. First, Emma dives into Elon Musk and Trump press secretary Karoline Leavitt lying about social security and the supposed tens of millions of dead people receiving benefits, debunking those outlandish claims. Then Emma speaks with Molly and they discuss the Trump administration and its associates' connections to the crypto industry, in particular their animosity towards regulatory agencies like the FDIC & CFPB. Molly explains how crypto stakeholders, folks like Marc Andreessen and other members of the "PayPal Mafia", have, under the guise of the specter of "de-banking", lobbied and pushed for traditional finance to embrace the crypto industry, in ways such as integrating crypto into exchange traded funds or ETF's, so there are other avenues for people to interface with Bitcoin and crypto without having to actually go through all of the hoops it takes to do so (converting funds into BitCoins, storing them in BitCoin wallets, etc.) Molly dives further into how the crypto industry lobbies traditional financial institutions and banks to get what they want, and explains further what people like Andreessen really want out of defanging regulatory institutions like the FDIC and CFPB. And in the Fun Half, Emma & the MR Crew take a look at Trump border czar Tom Homan's recent obsession with AOC, as well as the underreported fact that a significant number of deportees since the beginning of the Trump administration have been-you guessed it!-people without a criminal record. They then take a look at some of the heartbreaking anecdotes surrounding the Trump administration's federal worker layoffs, as well as some words of warning from a retired air traffic controller as to what may happen after so many probationary employees leave the federal workforce. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Jackie Flynn Mogensen, reporter covering science and health at Mother Jones, to discuss her recent reporting on the Trump administration's actions towards the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Then, he speaks with Elie Mystal, justice correspondent at The Nation, to discuss his recent piece on the Trump administration's to dismantle DEIA efforts across the federal government. First, Sam runs through updates on the potential blockage of Trump's federal funds freeze, Trump's attempt to push out federal workers, Elon's interns' influence at the OPM, the gutting of the Equal Opportunity Commission, a trans care ban for anyone 19 and under, education funding, and Trump's grotesque immigration regime, before expanding on the enthusiasm from conservative media over Trump taking a sledgehammer to the government's ability to govern. Jackie Flynn Mogensen then joins, diving right into the devastating impact of Trump's first wave of federal funding freezes on the US public health regime, unpacking the pause on the NIH's $40B in funding to outside research – funding that spurs over a 2:1 return in economic activity – alongside the complete cut off of communications between health departments both internally and with the public. After expanding on the importance of broad-scale scientific research, Mogensen walks Sam through the drastic increase in insecurity and precarity among federal workers in these organizations, and why all of this dysfunction is ultimately the point of Trump's attacks on US public health infrastructure. Elie Mystal and Sam then unpack the utter nihilism of the Trump Administration's approach to the rule of law, particularly when bolstered by a Supreme Court intent on the destruction of the very same government. Next, Mystal walks through Trump's ongoing attack on DEI and DEIA policies, exploring their role as the white response to needing to “prove” the enforcement of the Civil Rights and Americans with Disabilities Acts, and what a world where the federal government refuses to act as an equal opportunity employer, nor defend equal opportunity employment, would look like. After touching on the Supreme Court's role in potentially bolstering Trump's executive takeover of the federal government – and why even a rebuke of Trump could spell trouble for future Democratic presidents – Elie and Sam wrap up with Democratic Leadership's failure to address any element of the material devastation Trump has already wrought on the country in less than two weeks. And in the Fun Half: Sam expands on the devastating impact of the “chaos is the point” ethos of the Trump Administration and the absurdity of blaming those materially affected over their vote, also touching on the utter failure of Democratic leadership to address this destruction, and looking at how a genuinely engaged opposition leader would respond to Trump in the form of JB Pritzker. Next, the MR Crew unpacks Rep. Rich Cormick's explanation on why taking away meals from kids is fine, actually, gets a window into the world of Harlan Crow from Redford in Dallas, and touches on the Trump Admin's decision to reverse (and maybe reverse the reversal?) of the recent OMB memo. They also dive deep into the devastating impact of Trump's first ten days on the agriculture industry, and watch RFK get grilled over his myriad dangerous hypocrisies, plus, your calls and IMs! Happy Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at the New Republic, columnist at The Guardian, and author of the upcoming book The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's felon status, California's wildfire crisis, the growing global climate crisis, Meta's new speech regulations, Gaza's still-growing death toll and the likely extent of its undercount, the House's bill to sanction the ICC, the Senate's bill to deport unconvicted migrants, the death of Anita Bryant, the death of the Chevron Doctrine, and TikTok's case at the Supreme Court, before diving a little deeper into the unparalleled dangers of climate change as seen in the wildfires rampaging around LA. Osita Nwanevu then joins, jumping right into the late developments of Trump's myriad legal woes over this last year, and the overwhelming feeling that our next president will be completely unaccountable while feeling completely untouchable, also touching on the genuine recognition of Trump as a problematic felon by the public, and why that simply didn't matter when it came to their open-faced rejection of the Democratic Party's institutionalist centrism. Expanding on this latter element, Nwanevu, Sam, and Emma walk through the Democrats' inability to act as a capable opposition party, never presenting any semblance of an alternative when it comes to rhetoric and policy around the GOP's key issues (immigration) or their own (healthcare), and often preferring to jump on board with the right in the hopes that it will legitimize their role in politics. Dissecting even deeper, Osita explores the dearth of any party identity around vague institutionalist careerism, failing to manifest any changes to their image in the decade since Trump's threat arose, and often refusing to fund any wings of the party that challenge its floundering status quo, before shifting to the importance of the world of labor in pushing for that alternative image of progressivism, with unions – the core of labor – providing political education, communication, and socialization for their workers, with the institutional power to push political parties around. Wrapping up, Nwanevu explores the importance of revitalizing spaces for building and exerting worker power, be they unions or other forms of democratized workplace, and how we can help make that happen. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Fox's “The Five” channel what funerals are really about (shaming Hillary Clinton), touch on the death of Anita Bryant, and talk with Steve from KC about his experience working with One America News. Molly from Brooklyn extends an invite to WikiCon, Kelcie from Austin unpacks conservatism's hypocrisies, and Mel Gibson – noted bigot, freak, and conspiracy theorist – tells Joe Rogan about his cure for cancer. Smokey the Bear from Texas tackles the vulture capitalism around the California Wildfires, and Bill Maher accidentally admits that Trans rights are Civil Rights, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Lee Hepner, senior legal counsel for the American Economic Liberties Project, to discuss the recent overturning of net neutrality. Then they speak with Joshua Kaplan, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss his recent piece entitled "The Militia and the Mole." First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the DoJ's release of details related to Trump's Jan 6th- and Stolen Documents-related cases, mass evacuations amid wildfires in LA, Dem's retaining of the Virginia legislature, the North Carolina Supreme Court's anti-democratic move, the House's massive anti-immigration bill, DoJ action over the RealPage rent-fixing scheme and the prior weaponization of the department under Trump, Israel's ongoing slaughter of Gazans in supposed safe zones, and ACA expansion, before unpacking a recent report on the unsurprising misinformation around gender-affirming care for adolescents. Lee Hepner then joins, jumping right into an extensive history of Net Neutrality, stemming from the establishment of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under FDR's New Deal to preserve open networks and fair communication, with the 1996 Communications Act expanding its coverage to the internet and contributing to the arguments to expand to full Net Neutrality building under Bush before coming to fruition under Obama, only to be killed and restored by Trump and Biden respectively, all leading to the recent 6th Circuit decision to, once again, kill it. After tackling what Net Neutrality exactly is (the mandate for providers to serve websites equally) and expanding on the particular role the overturning of the Chevron Deference Doctrine played in this decision, Hepner wraps up with tactics to push back against this decision, and whether federalism will help keep these corporations in line. Joshua Kaplan then walks Sam and Emma through his extensive reporting on the far-right militia American Patriots 3% (AP3), tackling their role within the wider extremist militia ecosystem and how they used that to distance the organization from the January 6th insurrection attempt before having a wider discussion on the initial backlash (even internally) to these organizations in the wake of 1/6 before a steady rhetorical pivot from Trump and the GOP reversed the tides completely, and why that should concern us heading into a second Trump Administration with threats of mass pardoning for violent participators and organizers of 1/6. After expanding on AP3's odd “big tent” identity amid right-wing militias, Kaplan touches on his extensive conversations with a mole from AP3 and the role Facebook played in the militia's outreach, before wrapping up with the genuine threat posed by the extensive military training of these groups, both offered by the groups themselves and aided by their extensive connections to police, military, and veteran organizations. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the response from Mexico's President Scheinbaum to Trump's absurd statements on the US' territorial rights, the passage of the GOP's Lincoln Riley Bill with support from myriad Congressional Dems – including John “Manchin 2.0” Fetterman – to hand over immigration enforcement to the states (alongside the right to deport without criminal conviction). Chris Hayes reflects on the short history of Facebook's moderation team, John from Montreal on Trump's antagonization of US allies, and Kowalski from Nebraska parses through the future of farming amid threats to land ownership and more.
