Active feedback and functionality in model tissues

Sommerfeld Theory Colloquium (ASC)

In the development of animals, tissues self-organise starting from a single cell into lay- ers, shapes and patterns. This active mechanical process operates beyond the theoretical framework of reaction-diffusion equations such as Turing patterns. At the same time, combining active driving with careful mechanical design of a system is distinct route to pattern formation and artificial functionality. Here, I will begin by introducing vertex models, a tissue model where the two dimensional cell layer is approximated by a polygonal tilings. I will then how two types of active driving can generate function: First, for polar active materials, a coupling of activity to force, a.k.a. self-alignment, is generic. Governed by the activity-elasticity interactions, it generates either flocking or oscillatory dynamics depending on the boundary conditions of the tissue. Second, mechanochemical stress feedback in cell-cell junctions arises from the catch bond dynamics of the actomyosin cortex. It allows a junction to generate a contractile force that can overcome external pulling and thus allow for an active rear- rangement or T1. In vertex and continuum models, for strong enough feedback this gives rise to convergence-extension flows where the flow is opposite the direction of mechanical polarisation, effectively generating a negative viscosity state.

Welcome to another show about the big toe (hopefully you heard the first presentation, What’s the Big Deal About the Big Toe?) because in this episode, we’re taking it further. You will learn why your big toe is crucial for efficient movement, and how its functionality influences everything from your running stride to balance. I reveal how wearing tight, restrictive shoes can hinder your big toe’s ability to function properly, leading to muscle imbalances, poor glute activation, and even overuse injuries. You will hear about the myths surrounding “over-pronation” and why it’s not the enemy—and why poor big toe function is. I also dive into the science behind conditions like “runner’s hallux” and the role of the big toe in controlling pronation, explain why two-thirds of endurance runners have a dysfunctional big toe, and why barefoot-inspired footwear like Peluvas may be the best path to restoring foot health and strength. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to learn how to improve your big toe health and take your movement and fitness to the next level! TIMESTAMPS: Big toe functionality helps influence and optimize pronation. [00:58] Pronation is the natural inward and downward rotation of the foot and the flattening of the arch during the walking or running stride. [02:02] There has never been any research to reveal that the most high-tech modern running shoes or any running shoe ever invented can actually control pronation. [05:38] How can we get better at pronation? [08:03] Walk around barefoot as much as you can. [12:27] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com B.rad Whey Protein Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! In 1963, a time of heightened suppression of Black Americans to their civil rights, President Kennedy invited 244 lawyers to the White House, calling on them to use their expertise and influence to move the civil rights struggle from the streets into the courts. That call to action launched The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a nonprofit that for 63 years has tackled discrimination against people of color and championed the right to full participation in civic life. In this episode of Power Station, I am honored to feature Rob Weiner, Director of the Committee's Voting Rights Project. which challenges efforts at the state and national levels to disenfranchise voters of color. It is notable and moving that until recently Rob was Senior Counsel at the Voting Rights Division at the US Department of Justice. He explains that under the Trump administration, the DOJ has abandoned its mission to protect the right to vote and is instead trafficking in disproven claims of voting scams and election fraud. Rob and his colleagues at the Lawyers Committee are boldly pushing back against executive orders, redistricting schemes and narratives that seek to weaken hard-won civil rights. And they are winning. Market speculation into commodities like Bitcoin and Crude oil pose dangerous risks during the best of times. Heading into a recession, the stakes are even higher. The temptation to participate during volatile periods is a psychological phenomenon that takes hold among casual investors who rarely realize when they’re part of an institutional con. When leveraged institutions are in desperate need of liquidity they’ll stop at nothing to game the system. In this episode, Max offers a cautionary tale of speculative behavior in the crude oil markets during the financial crisis that very few people even know about. He then connects it to the dangers posed to investors who dabble in digital currencies like Bitcoin, especially under a pro-crypto Trump administration. Access the episode resources. The agricultural industry has long been at the forefront of technological innovation, continuously seeking ways to enhance productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. A significant development in this realm is the emergence of autonomous robots specifically designed for pesticide application in orchards. Jongwoo Ha from Hada explores the design, functionality, and potential impact of these robots across the world. The Need for Automation in AgricultureAgriculture remains one of the most labor-intensive sectors, often requiring repetitive tasks that can be physically demanding and time-consuming. Pesticide application is a prime example of such a task. Traditionally, farmers have relied on manual labor or machinery that requires human operation, exposing workers to health risks associated with chemical exposure. The need for a safer, more efficient solution is evident, and this is where autonomous robots come into play.Design and Functionality of the Autonomous Pesticide Spraying RobotThe autonomous pesticide spraying robot developed by Hada is designed specifically for use in orchards, targeting crops such as apples and oranges. Its design is both practical and innovative, resembling a small car in size, which allows it to navigate orchard rows effectively. The robot features a trunk-like structure equipped with spring nozzles that extend outward, mimicking the branches of a tree. This design enables the robot to spray pesticides at various heights, accommodating trees that can grow up to three meters tall, with the capability to reach up to five meters to account for wind dispersion. One of the standout features of Hada's robot is its ability to pivot the nozzles, allowing for precise application depending on the height of the trees. This adaptability not only enhances the effectiveness of pesticide delivery but also minimizes waste and environmental impact. The robot operates autonomously, utilizing advanced sensors and navigation systems to traverse the orchard without human intervention, thus reducing labor costs and mitigating health risks for workers.Production and Market PotentialAfter three years of development, Hada plans to launch the autonomous pesticide spraying robot by mid-2025. While the initial focus is on the Asian market, the company has expressed a willingness to explore opportunities globally. During the CES event, the team recognized the potential for their technology in regions like Africa, where the demand for autonomous agricultural solutions is growing. The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a partner from Togo highlights the company's commitment to expanding its reach and impact. The Broader Implications of Autonomous Agricultural RobotsHada's introduction of autonomous robots for pesticide application represents a significant shift in agricultural practices. By automating the spraying process, these robots not only improve efficiency but also address critical issues such as worker safety and environmental sustainability. The ability to apply pesticides precisely reduces chemical runoff and minimizes the ecological footprint of farming practices. Moreover, the potential for global distribution of these robots opens up new avenues for agricultural innovation in developing regions. As the company noted, autonomous agricultural robots do not recognize geographical boundaries; they can be adapted to various agricultural environments, making them a versatile solution for farmers worldwide. Conclusion: Automating Part of the Agricultural ProcessHada's development of autonomous robots for orchard pesticide application is a promising advancement in the agricultural sector. By addressing the challenges of labor-intensive pesticide application, these robots offer a safer, more efficient alternative that benefits both farmers and the environment. As the technology continues to evolve and expand into new markets, it holds the potential to revolutionize agricultural practices, ensuring a more sustainable future for food production globally. The journey of these robots, from conception to market launch, underscores the importance of innovation in tackling the pressing issues faced by modern agriculture.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. Send Steve a Text MessageFinding the sweet spot between expansive musical knowledge and practical application is the key challenge every guitarist faces. How do you balance mastering the entire fretboard while still being ready to perform this weekend? This episode tackles that very tension by introducing a powerful two-pronged approach to practice. The journey begins with pentatonic scales—the guitarist's bread and butter—examining how to develop both comprehensive visualization across the fretboard and immediate usability in real-world situations. Rather than trying to master everything at once, we explore the strategy of developing a "home key" where your skills reach their peak while maintaining functional ability in any musical context. This slice-and-dice approach allows you to play effectively even when thrown into unfamiliar musical territory. The conversation expands beyond scales to song learning, gig preparation, and the parallels with software development's "Ready, Fire, Aim" philosophy. Just as developers must release products before they're perfect, musicians must find ways to execute effectively with their current skills while continuously improving. This practical wisdom applies whether you're preparing for a scheduled performance or responding to that unexpected "hey, come jam with us" moment at a local venue. What makes this approach so valuable is how it transforms practice from a theoretical exercise into a functional toolkit. By balancing long-term mastery with short-term functionality, you'll discover new insights about what skills truly matter, develop greater musical adaptability, and most importantly, spend more time actually making music. Ready to revolutionize your practice routine? Listen now and transform how you approach the fretboard forever.
