POPULARITY
She vanished more than 75 years ago over the South Pacific while attempting to fly around the world in a Lockheed Electra 10E twin-engine airplane sponsored by Purdue University. That's just one of the connections between famous aviator Amelia Earhart and the Hoosier state. She was particularly associated with Purdue, which has the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of artifacts associated with the famous aviator, whose disappearance in 1937 remains a mystery. To explore the sky-high stack of Earhart links to Indiana, Purdue staff writer and historian John Norberg, an aviation expert, joins Nelson for an encore broadcast of one of the most popular shows in our Hoosier History Live archives with the original show from 2012. During the final two years before Amelia Earhart vanished, she was a sort of visiting celebrity-in-residence on the West Lafayette campus, where she was a career counselor for women students, and where she lectured and conducted conferences. She also was an adviser to the university's department of aeronautics.

Join C.J. and Kenzie as they discuss Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10E, her attempt to circumnavigate the globe, and her eventual disappearance near Howland Island, in the South Pacific. Lastly, they talk about the massive search and rescue operation, which involved the battleship USS Colorado and the aircraft carrier USS Lexington.
“I think everyone that looks at that photo can agree that the two individuals in it are Caucasian. My question for the jury is if they aren’t Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan, who were they? There are people that say well there were probably other white people there. No; there were no other white people there and I have the source documents from the Navy to prove it.” What makes a good story? Is it in the details? Or the way that someone tells it? There’s a story that’s been told for over 50 years now. And it’s remained the same. Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan, and their Lockheed Electra 10E were in the Marshall Islands and Saipan. Fred Goerner believed it. Thomas Devine believed it. And modern-day investigators like Dick Spink, Les Kinney, and Mike Campbell believe it. So did members of the US military that were stationed in Saipan after the events of the war. Tonight, we finish painting this picture for you. And my partner Jennifer brings in for the first time, a witness for the defense that will offer a counterbalance to everything we’re presenting. And we’ll bring in some heavy hitters that might drop a fact or two that will blow your mind. Get ready. We’re back with continuing testimony for Japanese capture. Spring has arrived. Finally. It’s been a long and brutal winter in Atchison, Kansas. The interesting thing about Spring is that it signals a rebirth. Winter brings death, Spring brings that death back to life. And the birds' chirp. Which is always nice. Six episodes down in this series and tonight things start to shift. When last we left her, Amelia Earhart had an idea. And that idea was to fly around the world at the equator. Because of her connection to Purdue University she now had her vessel. A state-of-the-art Lockheed Electra 10E that was dubbed “the flying laboratory”. There are also a couple of characters that enter Amelia’s life at this point. Characters that will forever be etched into history alongside her. One especially. Tonight, we discuss the first leg of her world flight and where that leg took her; Hawaii. All was well, spirits were up, and it seemed like Amelia Earhart was well on her way to adding “world flyer” to her already huge list of career accomplishments. Then, shortly after 5:40 Am on the morning on March 20th, 1937 everything changed. On takeoff, at Luke field, Amelia Earhart ground-looped her aircraft. We’ll talk a lot about this tonight. Pay close attention to the testimony throughout this episode. In the end, you decide. Did Amelia Earhart make a potentially fatal error on takeoff? Or was something else at play? Chasing Earhart may be wrapping up, but our investigation is just beginning. “I think Amelia is more well known than possibly even Lindberg. Amelia is just part of the psyche of the public. She was a really positive role model doing some amazing things; certainly laying it all out there on the line. The mystery of the disappearance adds to her story." Considered by many to be a purist when it comes to locating Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10E, Dana Timmer has been an advocate for the "Ditch & Sink" hypothesis since he started investigating the events that occurred on the morning of July the 2nd 1937. Working with and earning the professional respect of many of the world's premier experts in nautical exploration, Dana led the very first deep water search for Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan and their Lockheed Electra 10E in 1999 and he's been feverishly working this case ever since. Working with the team of Michael Williamson and Arthur Wright at Williamson & Associates, Dana believes that it's just a matter of "when" for the location and retrieval of the holy grail of aviation. Tonight, on the 68th episode of the Chasing Earhart podcast Dana joins us via Zoom from Vienna Austria along with Mike Williamson and Arthur Wright joining us from Seattle Washington to discuss "Expedition Amelia" and why they collectively believe that the interest, in this case, is high, the technology is there and the time to end Amelia's story is now.

“When you find the airplane; no matter where it is. You now have an obligation to explain what happened. How did it get there and to explain the last moments of Amelia Earhart; her story is unfinished at this point, and we need to finish it.” Part of our original 25, project guest Tom Dettweiler has lived a life on the ocean. Taking part in some of the biggest nautical finds in history, including the discovery of the Titanic, Tom has built a career out of becoming a historical biographer for those cases that have no ending; often finding himself on the other side of history in the modern era. Tonight, on the 56th episode of the Chasing Earhart podcast, Tom makes his podcast debut via Zoom to discuss the crash and sink hypothesis, excavating the Electra in a variety of nautical environments, and his personal thoughts on why the case of Amelia Earhart Fred Noonan and their Lockheed Electra 10E may in fact be, the holy grail of aviation.
