In this week's episode, both of our storytellers share tales of persistence and beating the odds in order to pursue their scientific dreams. Part 1: Determined to become an academic, Rajyashree Sen must take on a broken system to secure a spot in a PhD program in Vienna. Part 2: Josh Barber dreams of studying fish, but when his father goes to jail and his mother is diagnosed with breast cancer, he's left to care for his nine younger siblings. Rajyashree Sen is a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University. She holds a PhD in neuroscience and molecular biology from the University of Vienna (Austria), and a masters degree in Biotechnology from the University of Hyderabad (India). As a graduate student with Dr. Barry Dickson, Dr. Sen dissected the neuronal pathways for evasive walking in fruit-flies. Her research focused on a set of neurons, dubbed the moonwalker neurons, that constitute the key pathway for backward walking in flies. Her work has been tweeted by MC Hammer. Dr. Sen is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Dr. Richard Axel, where she investigates the neuronal basis of social memories in mice. When she is not in the lab, she does improv comedy. While science has taken her to interesting places in interesting brains, improv has taken her to the moon, hell, back and beyond. Josh is the Assistant Director of Aquatic Life at Columbia University where he oversees the well-being of various aquatic species in biomedical research. He's cohost of the Podcast "Gettin' Fishy With it" a podcast about fish in the wild, the hobby and the laboratory. His hobbies include improv comedy, ruining conversation flow with terrible puns, fishing, and fishing in his favorite videogame, World of Warcraft. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep.237 Amanda Coulson has worked for three decades as a scholar, critic, curator and cultural producer, having collaborated with artists and institutions, private and corporate colleagues, in the US, Europe, and various sites in the Caribbean. A dual-national (Bahamas/US), she grew up between London, Nassau, and New York, where she studied for her Master's Degree at the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU) and started her career at the Old Master dealers, Wildenstein & Sons, going on to work in various art galleries in London, Paris and Milan. Developing as a writer, Coulson spent 2 years as the international Editor of tema celeste, an Italian bi-lingual contemporary art magazine, before consolidating her critical practice writing for a variety of publications (Frieze, Modern Painters, ARTNews, among others) and providing critical texts for monographic gallery and museum shows. Coulson also worked as a freelance curator in Germany, organizing several exhibitions in Berlin, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Leipzig and Vienna (Austria), with special attention to Bahamian artists. Noting a lack of platforms for galleries representing emerging art, in 2005 she co-founded the VOLTA art fairs, which take place annually in New York and Basel, Switzerland. In 2011, she was invited home to The Bahamas to be Executive Director at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), where her focus was on increasing global awareness of the contemporary Caribbean art scene and on expanding the capacity and reach of the NAGB through a rigorous combination of capital works, collaborative projects and the building of strong inter-island, regional and international networks. She served on the Davidoff Art Initiative (now Caribbean Art Initiative) Board from 2012-2018, and on the Board of the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC) until she stepped down from the NAGB in 2021, after a decade at the helm. She is the founding partner at TERN, a new Nassau-based gallery operated by three Bahamian women whose aim is to support Bahamian and Caribbean artists in telling their own stories the global stage. With Henrique Arfsten, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna - Austria and Alexandre Mebazza, Hospital Lariboisiere, Paris - France. In this episode of HFA CardioTalk, Henrike Arfsten and Alexandre Mebazaa discuss the importance of rapid initiation and titration of guideline-directed medical heart failure therapy. A focus will be on data from the STRONG-HF trial, which demonstrated safety and efficacy of rapid up-titration following an acute heart failure event. The trial was even stopped early as the benefits of the intensive treatment strategy were overwhelming. Moreover, specific questions are raised, such as the right time to start therapy and how to deal with possible side effects. Mebazaa A, et al. Lancet 2022 Dec 3;400(10367):1938-52 Biegus J, et al. On the verge of a post-antibiotic reality, there is an urgent clinical need for new antibiotics. Luckily, new candidates are in the pipeline and older agents are getting a second breath of life through combination therapy. In this episode of Communicable, host Erin McCreary invites Dr. Markus Zeitlinger of the University of Vienna (Austria) and scientific expert for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and Dr. Michael Dudley, president and CEO of Qpex Biopharma, to discuss antimicrobials in the clinical development pipeline. Together they unpack how the WHO curate the priority list of pathogens and how companies adapt such lists into their antimicrobial development business plans. They also discuss the unique challenges and complexities of developing antibiotics, from return on investments and defining the ‘novelty' of an agent to the conundrum of balancing post-market approval and antimicrobial stewardship. Beta-lactamase inhibitors and oral carbapenems in the pipeline targeting ‘the big three' (Enterobacterales, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter) are the primary focus. This episode was edited by Kathryn Hostettler and peer-reviewed by Dr. Benjamin Berinson of the Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Germany. Welcome back, everybody, to New Cyber Frontier! Today we are going over Dr. Gorog's trip he went on, to share the IEEE Digital Privacy initiative all over the world. In late June, he made multiple stops in Canada, Singapore, Milan Italy, Vienna Austria, Hungary Budapest, and Bristol England. During his trip, he spoke at different events and conferences including: (I.T.S) Intelligent Transportation Systems, Securing Privacy, and a Privacy-enhancing conference. Digital Transformation has been on the horizon for quite some time now, and we are digging deeper into how the world is shifting more towards Digital and virtual instead of Physical. For a new Generation, this can impact the workforce, it can assemble or destroy a good amount of certain jobs that we have today. This also raises the question, if everything is digital, how much of your private data is owned by you? Maintaining control and security over your data in a digital world is an essential part of our future. Tune in today to see how Digital Transformation will impact your future! NEW: send me a text message! (I'd love to hear your thoughts - texts get to me anonymously, without charge or signup) In a bit of a parallel episode to Episode 24 ("The Footballer who Defied the Nazis? The Myth of Matthias Sindelar"), this is the story of Hakoach Vienna. A child of central European Jewish emancipation movements and of the "muscular religion" fashionable at the time, the Jewish club became Austria's first professional champion in 1925, subsequently lost its important players to North American clubs, was home to Bela Guttman in Austria, and was shut down 3 days after the Anschluss of Austria to Germany. It lives on in at least 3 clubs, on 3 continents, one of them a re-formed Hakoah, in Vienna itself. Marcus Patka is here to tell this story. A historian and curator at the Jewish Museum of Vienna, he created and curates the Hakoah collection from the interwar years at the Museum. HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:William D. HEALTH NEWS · Personalized nutrition more effective than general diet advice, study finds · Vitamin K1 may improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar levels for pre-diabetics · Frequent salting of food increases the risk of stomach cancer · A 30-year US study links ultra-processed food to higher risk of early death · Mechanism outlined by which inadequate vitamin E can cause brain damage · About 90% of US adults are on the way to heart disease, study suggests Personalized nutrition more effective than general diet advice, study finds King's College London, May 8, 2024 (Medical Xpress) Personalized nutrition approaches can improve several key health metrics, including lower weight, lower cholesterol, better mood, improved gut health, lower heart disease risk, and better metabolic health. Improvements for those following personalized guidance were also greater in some areas than for those following current, generalized government advice. In this study, researchers wanted to see if a personalized diet plan, tailored to an individual's biology, lifestyle, and health history, would have a greater impact than generic nutrition advice such as avoiding red meat. 347 Americans took part in the study, with researchers comparing the effects of following an 18-week personalized program to generic US government-issued nutrition advice. While both groups improved their health overall, participants on the personalized diet plan lost more weight than the control group and lowered their triglyceride levels more—decreasing their risk of heart disease. Participants following the personalized diet plan were also twice as likely to report improved mood, twice as likely to feel less hungry, and more than four times more likely to report better sleep quality and energy levels compared with the control group. Vitamin K1 may improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar levels for pre-diabetics Ahvaz Jundishapur University (Iran), May 6, 2024 (Nutraingredients) Supplements containing vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) may improve glycemic status and insulin sensitivity for premenopausal and pre-diabetic women, says a new study. “To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first one that investigated the effects of vitamin K1 supplementation on the glycemic status and insulin sensitivity via different forms of [osteocalcin] in pre-diabetic women,” wrote the researchers in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition . Osteocalcin (cOC) is a vitamin K-dependent protein. Without adequate vitamin K, the osteocalcin remains inactive (uncarboxylated osteocalcin, ucOC), and thus not effective. The new study used phylloquinone at a daily dose of 1,000 micrograms for four weeks. Eighty-two pre-diabetic and pre-menopausal women participated in the study and were randomly assigned to either the vitamin K1 group or placebo. Results showed that cOC levels increased as a result of K1 supplementation, while ucOC levels decreased, compared with placebo. In addition, results of the two hour post-oral glucose tolerance test showed improvements in both glucose and insulin levels in the K1 group, compared with placebo. Data from the insulin sensitivity index (ISI) showed increases in the K1 group, they added. Frequent salting of food increases the risk of stomach cancer Medical University of Vienna (Austria), May 8, 2024 (Eurekalert) In Asian countries, where high-salt foods are popular, the link between high salt consumption and stomach cancer has already been proven. A long-term study by MedUni Vienna has now shown for the first time that this risk is also reflected in the cancer statistics in Europe. As the analysis recently published in the specialist journal Gastric Cancer shows, people who frequently add salt to their food are around 40 per cent more likely to develop stomach cancer than those who do not use the salt shaker at the table. Data from more than 470,000 adults from the large-scale British cohort study "UK-Biobank" was analysed. This revealed that people who said they always or frequently added salt to their food were 39 per cent more likely to develop stomach cancer over an observation period of around 11 years than those who never or rarely added an extra pinch of salt to their food. In the list of the most common types of cancer worldwide, stomach cancer is in fifth place. The risk of this tumour disease increases with age, but the latest statistics paint a worrying picture of an increase in adults under the age of 50. "Our research shows the connection between the frequency of added salt and stomach cancer in Western countries too," emphasises first author Selma Kronsteiner-Gicevic. "With our study, we want to raise awareness of the negative effects of extremely high salt consumption and provide a basis for measures to prevent stomach cancer," summarises study leader Tilman Kühn. A 30-year US study links ultra-processed food to higher risk of early death Harvard University, May 8, 2024 (Medical Xpress) Higher consumption of most ultra-processed foods is linked to a slightly higher risk of death, with ready-to-eat meat, poultry, and seafood based products, sugary drinks, dairy based desserts, and highly processed breakfast foods showing the strongest associations, finds a 30-year US study in The BMJ today. Mounting evidence links ultra-processed foods to higher risks of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and bowel cancer, but few long term studies have examined links to all cause and cause specific deaths, especially due to cancer. To address this knowledge gap, researchers tracked the long-term health of 74,563 female registered nurses from 11 US states in the Nurses' Health Study and 39,501 male health professionals from all 50 US states in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study with no history of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes at study enrollment. Compared with participants in the lowest quarter of ultra-processed food intake (average 3 servings per day), those in the highest quarter (average 7 servings per day) had a 4% higher risk of total deaths and a 9% higher risk of other deaths, including an 8% higher risk of neurodegenerative deaths. The association between ultra-processed food intake and death varied across specific food groups, with meat, poultry, and seafood-based ready-to-eat products showing the strongest and most consistent associations, followed by sugar-sweetened and artificially-sweetened beverages, dairy-based desserts, and ultra-processed breakfast food. Mechanism outlined by which inadequate vitamin E can cause brain damage Oregon State University, May 3, 2024 (Daily Science) Researchers at Oregon State University have discovered how vitamin E deficiency may cause neurological damage by interrupting a supply line of specific nutrients and robbing the brain of the "building blocks" it needs to maintain neuronal health. The research showed that zebrafish fed a diet deficient in vitamin E throughout their life had about 30 percent lower levels of DHA-PC, which is a part of the cellular membrane in every brain cell, or neuron. Other recent studies have also concluded that low levels of DHA-PC in the blood plasma of humans is a biomarker than can predict a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease. Just as important, the new research studied the level of compounds called "lyso PLs," which are nutrients needed for getting DHA into the brain, and serve as building blocks that aid in membrane repair. It showed the lyso PLs are an average of 60 percent lower in fish with a vitamin E deficient diet. The year-old zebrafish used in this study, and the deficient levels of vitamin E they were given, are equivalent to humans eating a low vitamin E diet for a lifetime. In the United States, 96 percent of adult women and 90 percent of men do not receive adequate levels of vitamin E in their diet. "This research showed that vitamin E is needed to prevent a dramatic loss of a critically important molecule in the brain, and helps explain why vitamin E is needed for brain health," said Maret Traber, at OSU and lead author on this research. About 90% of US adults are on the way to heart disease, study suggests Brigham and Women's Hospital & Harvard Medical School, May 8, 2024 (Medical Xpress) Nine of 10 American adults are in the early, middle or late stages of a syndrome that leads to heart disease, a new report finds, and almost 10% have the disease already. "Poor cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health is widespread among the U.S. population," concludes a team led by Dr. Muthiah Vaduganathan of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Researchers looked specifically at rates of what the American Heart Association has dubbed cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic (CKM) syndrome Among adults age 20 or older, only 10.6% did not have some level of CKM syndrome. About 26% fell into the early stage 1 category, meaning they were gaining dangerous levels of body fat. Nearly half (49%) of adults fell into stage 2 CVM syndrome, and 5.4% were stage 3. According to the study, 9.2% of adults were in stage 4, with full-blown heart disease and, in some cases, failed kidneys. The bottom line: "Almost 90% of US adults met criteria for CKM syndrome (stage 1 or higher) and 15% met criteria for advanced stages, neither of which improved between 2011 and 2020," according to the Boston researchers.

My guest today is Robert Karas. He is a partner and a chief investment officer at Bank Gutmann in Vienna Austria. He is a fellow Guy Spier's ValueX attendee. He calls himself an investor on a lifelong journey. I'm a big fan of his newsletter, which you can find on LinkedIn, the link is in the notes. Robert has a way of presenting familiar ideas in a new fresh, and thoughtful way. I think that any seasoned and new investor would benefit from reading them. I highly recommend checking out his earlier posts, especially the ones written in midst of last crisis, the global COVID pandemic. Today, we talk about Robert's childhood, and upbringing, his investing journey. He shared with me his experience working at 100-year old institution, and how that influences the type of clients he works with, and the type of investment philosophy that his firm pursues. We discuss the benefits of writing, and how writing can make us better investors. Robert likes to call himself an outsider, and he explains why that helps in his work. I especially like how he refers to the life of an investor as being monk like. He shares how an investment team resembles monks and nuns in a monastery. Stay tuned until the end to find out why Robert believes that it doesn't pay to get completely out of the market at any point in time, no matter what's happening. I greatly enjoyed our conversation, I hope to continue to learn from Robert, and follow his writing. After we stopped recording, I shared with Robert that Vienna was the first Western European city I saw as a kid. Poland, where I grew up, was just ending its failed experiment with a centrally planned Soviet-style economy. I have vivid memories of Vienna as being colorful, and alive compared to my early childhood Poland, which was gray, but about to dramatically change as the Cold War came to an end, and the Iron Curtain just fell. We're going to look at a few examples of tigger happy pilots and missile operators, starting with the 5th April 1948 Gatow Air Disaster over Berlin as the Cold War ramped up after the Second World War. A British European Airways Vickers VC.1B Viking airliner crashed near RAF Gatow air base, after a Soviet Air Force Yakovlev Yak-3 fighter aircraft flew into it from below. All ten passengers and four crew on board the Viking were killed, as was the Soviet pilot. This incident is a warning to aviators in the contemporary world, witness the tension between Chinese and Taiwan, North and South Korea, near-misses above the Baltic, and less reported but as dangerous, incidents across the middle East. First, 1948. The Gatow Air Disaster was a mid-air collision that sparked an international incident between the USA, Britain and Russia – leading to heightened tensions and which escalated into what we know as the Berlin Blockade. That was a rather clumsy attempt by Joseph Stalin to force Europe to back down about the Marshall plan. So let's take a look at some other examples of the military behaving badly. On July 27, 1955, an El Al flight from Vienna Austria to Tel Aviv Israel blundered into Bulgarian airspace and was shot down by two MiG fighters. All 58 people on board were killed. After initially denying involvement, Bulgaria admitted to having downed the aircraft. Despite occurring during a low point in relations between the Soviet bloc and the US and its allies, international fallout was minimal. Moving east, on July 23, 1954, mainland China's People's Liberation Army fighters shot down a Cathay Pacific Airways CA 54 Skymaster. The plane was flying from Bangkok to Hong Kong when it was hit - 10 out of the 19 passengers and crew died. In apologizing for the attack to Britain days later, the Chinese government claimed they had thought the plane was a military aircraft from Taiwan which they presumed was on an attack mission against Hainan Island. Trouble spots include the Qatar and its neighbours, Turkey, North Korea, parts of East Africa, Yemen, China and Taiwan. That's quite a list.

VIDEOS: 1. The Anti-Smartphone Revolution – (13:23) ColdFusion 2. Gravitas Plus: Explained: The China-Taiwan conflict (9:11) HEALTH NEWS Astonishing effects of grapes, remarkable potential for health benefits Frequent nut consumption associated with less inflammation Body posture affects how oral drugs absorbed by stomach [why not supplements too?] Lifting Weights Beats Out Cycling, Swimming For Vegans Wanting Stronger Bones Perfectionism Linked To Burnout At Work, School And Sports, Research Finds Mindfulness Therapy Better Than Antidepressants Astonishing effects of grapes, remarkable potential for health benefits Western New England University, August 8, 2022 Recent studies released by Dr. John Pezzuto and his team from Western New England University show “astonishing” effects of grape consumption and “remarkable” impacts on health and on lifespans. Published in the journal Foods, one study showed that adding grapes in an amount equal to just under two cups of grapes per day to a high-fat diet, typically consumed in western countries, yielded reductions in fatty liver and extended lifespans. Noting that these studies add an entirely new dimension to the old saying ‘you are what you eat,' Pezzuto, who has authored over 600 scientific studies, said that the work with grapes showed actual changes in genetic expression. “That is truly remarkable.” Adding grapes to a high-fat diet also increased levels of antioxidant genes and delayed natural death. Acknowledging that it is not an exact science to translate years of lifespan from a mouse to a human, Pezzuto said that his best estimate is the change observed in the study would correspond to an additional 4-5 years in the life of a human. Another study by Dr. Pezzuto and his team published in the journal Antioxidants, reported that grape consumption altered gene expression in the brain and had positive effects on behavior and cognition that were impaired by a high-fat diet. Frequent nut consumption associated with less inflammation Brigham and Women's Hospital, August 1, 2022 In a study of more than 5,000 people, investigators from Brigham and Women's Hospital have found that greater intake of nuts was associated with lower levels of biomarkers of inflammation, a finding that may help explain the health benefits of nuts. The results of the study appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “Population studies have consistently supported a protective role of nuts against cardiometabolic disorders such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and we know that inflammation is a key process in the development of these diseases,” said corresponding author Ying Bao, MD, ScD, an epidemiologist in BWH's Channing Division of Network Medicine. “Our new work suggests that nuts may exert their beneficial effects in part by reducing systemic inflammation.” In the current study, the research team performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Nurses' Health Study, which includes more than 120,000 female registered nurses, and from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, which includes more than 50,000 male health professionals. The team assessed diet using questionnaires and looked at the levels of certain telltale proteins known as biomarkers in blood samples collected from the study participants. They measured three well-established biomarkers of inflammation: C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL6) and tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2). After adjusting for age, medical history, lifestyle and other variables, they found that participants who had consumed five or more servings of nuts per week had lower levels of CRP and IL6 than those who never or almost never ate nuts. In addition, people who substituted three servings per week of nuts in place of red meat, processed meat, eggs or refined grains had significantly lower levels of CRP and IL6. Peanuts and tree nuts contain a number of healthful components including magnesium, fiber, L-arginine, antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids such as α-linolenic acid. Body posture affects how oral drugs absorbed by stomach [why not supplements too?] Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, August 8, 2022 A common, economic, and easy method of administering drugs is orally, by swallowing a pill or capsule. But oral administration is the most complex way for the human body to absorb an active pharmaceutical ingredient, because the bioavailability of the drug in the gastrointestinal tract depends on the medication's ingredients and the stomach's dynamic physiological environment. In Physics of Fluids, researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine employ a biomimetic in-silico simulator based on the realistic anatomy and morphology of the stomach—a “StomachSim”—to investigate and quantify the effect of body posture and stomach motility on drug bioavailability. “”When the pill reaches the stomach, the motion of the stomach walls and the flow of contents inside determine the rate at which it dissolves. The properties of the pill and the stomach contents also play a major role. Stomach contents, motility, and gastric fluid dynamics all play a role in a drug's bioavailability, and stomach contractions can induce pressure and generate complex pill trajectories. This results in varying rates of pill dissolution and nonuniform emptying of the drug into the duodenum and, sometimes, gastric dumping in the case of modified-release dosage. The modeling appears to be the first of its kind to couple gastric biomechanics of posture with pill movement and drug dissolution to quantify an active pharmaceutical ingredientpassing through the pylorus into the duodenum. The model enabled the researchers to calculate and compare the emptying rate and the release of a dissolved active pharmaceutical ingredient into the duodenum for a variety of physiological situations. Lifting Weights Beats Out Cycling, Swimming For Vegans Wanting Stronger Bones Medical University of Vienna (Austria), August 2, 2022 When it comes to bone health, a new study finds people on a plant-based diet should grab the dumbbells. Researchers in Austria have found that lifting weights is the best form of exercise for vegans – trumping cycling and swimming. The team found that vegans who do resistance training once a week – such as machine-work, free weights, or bodyweight resistance – have stronger bones than plant-based eaters who do other forms of exercise. The new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found vegans who did resistance training had similar bone structure to omnivores — people who eat both meat and vegetables. For at least five years, authors followed 43 men and women on a plant-based diet and 45 men and women who eat meat as well. “Our study showed resistance training offsets diminished bone structure in vegan people when compared to omnivores.” Perfectionism linked to burnout at work, school and sports, research finds York St. John University (UK), July 31, 2022 Concerns about perfectionism can sabotage success at work, school or on the playing field, leading to stress, burnout and potential health problems, according to new research published by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In the first meta-analysis of the relationship between perfectionism and burnout, researchers analyzed the findings from 43 previous studies conducted over the past 20 years. It turns out perfectionism isn't all bad. One aspect of perfectionism called “perfectionistic strivings” involves the setting of high personal standards and working toward those goals in a pro-active manner. These efforts may help maintain a sense of accomplishment and delay the debilitating effects of burnout, the study found. The dark side of perfectionism, called “perfectionistic concerns,” can be more detrimental when people constantly worry about making mistakes, letting others down, or not measuring up to their own impossibly high standards, said lead researcher Andrew Hill, an associate professor of sport psychology at York St. John University in England. Previous research has shown that perfectionistic concerns and the stress they generate can contribute to serious healthproblems, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, fatigue and even early mortality. The study was published online in the Personality and Social Psychology Review. The study found that perfectionistic concerns had the strongest negative effects in contributing to burnout in the workplace, possibly because people have more social support and clearly defined objectives in education and sports. A student can be rewarded for hard work with a high grade, or a tennis player can win the big match, but a stellar performance in the workplace may not be recognized or rewarded, which may contribute to cynicism and burnout. “People need to learn to challenge the irrational beliefs that underlie perfectionistic concerns by setting realistic goals, accepting failure as a learning opportunity, and forgiving themselves when they fail,” Hill said. “Creating environments where creativity, effort and perseverance are valued also would help.” Mindfulness Therapy Better Than Antidepressants University of Exeter (UK), July 31, 2022 Antidepressants are big business. But for the same money, and without the side effects, a little mindfulness can do the same job. A new study from the University of Exeter in the UK suggests that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is just as good as drugs – and maybe even better MBCT is a structured training program for the mind and body. It was developed to help people deal with repeated bouts of depression. It teaches them skills to recognize and respond constructively to the thoughts and feelings associated with relapse. In other words, it helps patients re-focus their thoughts as a way to avoid falling back into depression. Prior studies have shown that MBCT reduces the risk of relapse or recurrence of depression by about 34% compared to usual care or placebo. B The research published in The Lancet followed a group of 424 depressed patients for two years. The patients had all suffered three or more previous major depressive episodes. And they were all taking a maintenance course of antidepressants. The MBCT group attended eight group therapy sessions in which they learned mindfulness practices and cognitive-behavioral skills, and participated in group discussions. After two years, relapse rates were worse in the drug group. The drug group relapsed at the rate of 47% compared to only 44% for the mindfulness group. The researchers concluded that MBCT may be an effective alternative to antidepressants for prevention of depressive relapse with no significant difference in cost. And it may be a good alternative for people who choose not to use drugs. But they also suggested MBCT was more beneficial than drugs in preventing relapses in patients who were at highest risk of relapse especially those who reported severe childhood abuse.
