Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. Adam Safron is Research Fellow at the Allen Discovery Institute at Tufts University, and is leading an interdisciplinaryresearch program at the Institute for Advanced Consciousness Studies. Most of his work has focused on characterizing the nature of preferences and motivation from mechanistic, developmental, and evolutionary perspectives. He has also studied the effects of brief mindfulness interventions on cognition and well-being. While conducting this research, he developed a neurophenomenological model of sensory absorption and ecstatic states via neural entrainment, which eventually led to developing a synthetic theory of consciousness attempting to integrate across seemingly conflicting perspectives. In this episode, we start by talking about a multidisciplinary approach to the mind. We discuss the study of consciousness, theories of consciousness, the relationship between consciousness and intelligence, and AI. We discuss psychedelics: what they are and how they work; and modern applications of psychedelics. Finally, we talk about the self.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. Charlotte Blease is an interdisciplinary health researcher at the Department of Women's and Children's Health at Uppsala University, Sweden, and the Digital Psychiatry Division at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at the Harvard Medical School. She is a former Fulbright Scholar and a winner in 2012 of the UK-wide BBC Radio 3's New Generation Thinkers Competition. Dr. Blease has written extensively about the ethics of placebo and nocebo effects. Her research has been profiled by international news outlets including The Washington Post, The Guardian, and The Sydney Morning Herald. She is coauthor of The Nocebo Effect: When Words Make You Sick. In this episode, we focus on The Nocebo Effect. We start by talking about the placebo effect and the nocebo effect. We discuss how the nocebo effect is produced psychologically, whether it is “all in the head”, how it is produced in a clinical context, how to distinguish between “real” side effects of treatments and nocebo effects, and whether words can produce harm. We also discuss whether psychotherapy is mostly placebo. Finally, we talk about the side effects and nocebo effects of the COVID-19 vaccine, nocebo effects in public health and medical ethics, and how to reduce the nocebo effect.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. He also uses mathematical modeling to explore the evolution of plasticity, the ability of organisms to adjust to environmental conditions. In this episode, we talk about human development in harsh and unpredictable environments. We start by defining harsh and unpredictable environments. We then talk about expected human childhood, repeated and chronic childhood adversity, strengths and abilities that develop in high-stress environments, hidden talents, enhanced emotion detection, adaptive impulsive behavior, present-oriented psychology, violence in deprived communities, and the development of resilience. In this episode, I sit down with my best friend, Trevor Cochever, for a real, raw, and wide-ranging conversation. If you missed Trevor's story of overcoming drug addiction and rebuilding his life, we'll link that in the show notes—it's a powerful listen. But today, we pivot from the past and dive straight into the tough realities and powerful breakthroughs that come from major life changes, breakups, and the relentless pursuit of self-improvement. We talk about what it looks like to stop settling for mediocrity, trade comfort for growth, and the real value of investing in yourself—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Trevor and I open up about sacrificing comfort for what really matters, the dangers of living on autopilot, and how to move from just wanting a better life to truly valuing and prioritizing it. We share stories about overcoming setbacks, navigating fear, and the inner work needed to break old patterns—plus, we cover everything from snoring and health hacks to business investments, parenting, and protecting what's precious. There's plenty of humor, hard truths, and practical tools to help you get unstuck and onto your next level—whatever that looks like for you. If you're ready to stop settling, find deeper fulfillment, and surround yourself with the right people, tune in and let's get after it.   Next Level Experience Discovery Call - Schedule Here   Interested in working with a coach? Viktor Frankl once wrote, “Those who cannot find a deep sense of meaning distract themselves with pleasure.” It's a quote that resonates deeply within the Stoic tradition. The Stoics, much like Frankl, warned against the unmoderated pursuit of indulgence. Pleasure, entertainment, materialism—these things are not inherently wrong, but when used to fill a void of meaning, they become distractions. And distractions, by their nature, pull us away from our true purpose.Yet, there's an intriguing inversion of this quote—one that opens the door to deeper reflection. Chris Williamson, host of Modern Wisdom, proposed it: “Those who cannot find a deep sense of pleasure distract themselves with meaning.” At first glance, this seems to oppose Stoic thought. But when we dig deeper, we find that it holds an important truth for those of us on the path of self-improvement.This podcast is listener-supported; if you would like to support the Strong Stoic (as well as gain access to exclusive content), you can do so on Patreon or Substack:Patreon: www.patreon.com/brandontumblinSubstack: https://strongstoic.substack.com

We then delve into the Roman empire, and talk about the role of eunuchs, emperors and their concubines, and the lives of slaves. We also talk about Medieval Europe, the roles of unmarried and celibate people in the Holy Roman Empire, what happened to bastards, Women's rooms in royal estates, the role of the Church, and the crusades. We discuss Magna Carta and the parliament in England, and how unmarried women were treated in England. We then explore the decline in promiscuity, and people writing against celibacy, as well as colonization and migration. Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. Agustín Fuentes is Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. His research focuses on the biosocial, delving into the entanglement of biological systems with the social and cultural lives of humans, our ancestors, and a few of the other animals with whom humanity shares close relations. His latest book is Sex Is a Spectrum: The Biological Limits of the Binary. In this episode, we focus on Sex Is a Spectrum. We start by discussing why sex has evolved; isogamy and anisogamy; what is a male, and what is a female; patterns of sexual and reproductive behavior; hermaphrodites; and “monogamous” primates and naked mole rats. We talk about why humans are “biocultural”, intersex people, comparisons with other primates, and why not all sex is reproductive and why that matters. We then talk about the differences between sex and gender, and the relationship between the sex chromosomes and primary and secondary sexual characteristics. We discuss what a spectrum is, and why a binary approach to sex can be problematic. Finally, we address some arguments against sex being a spectrum, and a nonbinary definitionof sex.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D.
