In this episode of Crimetime Inc., we delve deep into the enduring mystery of Amelia Earhart's disappearance. Amelia Earhart, the pioneering aviator, vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 while attempting a groundbreaking round-the-world flight with her navigator Fred Noonan. We explore the rich trove of information surrounding her final flight, the planned navigation methods, and the ensuing frantic search efforts that have left us with more questions than answers. Our discussion covers Earhart's last known flight on July 2, 1937, from Ley Airfield in New Guinea to Howland Island, and the technological challenges they faced with navigation and communication. We analyze the official U.S. government theory that the duo ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean, as well as the Gardner Island Hypothesis, suggesting they may have landed on Nikumaroro Island. Additionally, we scrutinize the controversial Commander Thompson theory that hints at mishandled search efforts, and even touch on conspiracy theories that Earhart was on a secret U.S. mission and captured by the Japanese, or staged her own disappearance to escape fame. Despite a massive search operation and numerous expeditions over the years, no conclusive evidence has been found. Join us as we piece together various facts, theories, and details in an attempt to shed light on this decades-old enigma and reflect on Earhart's enduring legacy as a beacon of courage and inspiration in aviation.00:00 Introduction to Amelia Earhart's Mystery00:46 The Final Flight: July 2nd, 193701:15 Technological Challenges and Communication Issues03:11 The Disappearance and Initial Search Efforts05:02 Theories and Speculations06:44 Controversies and Conspiracies09:17 The Enduring Fascination and Legacy12:42 Conclusion and Reflections Hosted on Acast. Rabbit Hole - The Vanishing of Amelia Earhart & Fred NoonanJul 27, 2022Chris Williamson joins Ed Opperman to talk about the enduring mystery of what exactly happened to aviator Earhart and her navigator Noonan. In July 1937 Earhart took off on what was her second attempt to be fly around the world on board the Electra. It was to be a 12 hour flight which would take her into the next day and a scheduled landing in Hawaii. However she never made it.Radio communication was difficult in that era, but conflicting reports of requests for help and low fuel are consistent throughout the story. When her plane ran into difficulties there was no rescue or recovery vessels in the area, possibly because of poor navigation which had forgotten the latitudinal time difference and therefore made a navigational error.Despite searches – which have continued for decades throughout the sea and nearby Nikumaroro island, no trace of the plane, Earhart or Noonan has ever been found. This has lead to countless theories about what befell the plane.Chris Williamson has been exploring this mystery from every angle for five years in his podcast. He tells Ed Opperman of the likely, the unlikely, the bizarre and the unsavoury notions put forth to try and resolve this enigma.WebsiteVanishedTwitter(s)Chris Williamson, Vanishedpod, Chasing Earhart, Me My FriendBookRabbit Hole - The Vanishing of Amelia Earhart & Fred NoonanBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Amelia Earhart and her co-pilot and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared in the Pacific Ocean on the next to last leg of her round-the-world flight on July 2nd, 1937, and the U.S. Navy, after an exhaustive search of the Pacific which did not include the Marshall islands, released a statement saying that Earhart and Noonan's Electra ran out of gas and crashed into the ocean somewhere near Howland Island, where the Coast Guard ship Itasca reported hearing her say they were running low on gas and could not see the island. Beginning on that day, July 2nd, dozens of radio transmissions from Earhart were heard over the next 6 days by radio receiver stations, military and civilian, hearing Earhart giving her call numbers and asking for rescue- yet no rescue was attempted and the reports were ignored. In this episode we talk to Chris Williamson, Project Director of Chasing Earhart, regarding theories and information provided by the many Earhart experts who have provided research on this subject and others concerning Earhart's disappearance including Dave Horner, author of The Earhart Enigma, who we quote here in part. On July 5th 2020, we walked away from the Amelia Earhart case as a team. After over a year of recording and almost two years in production, we ended what I thought was the final conversation we'd have on this show regarding Amelia Earhart.  Well, you know how that goes….. 2 weeks ago, on January 26th, a very intriguing sonar image of what appears to be an aircraft 16,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific was revealed by Tony Romeo and Deep Sea Vision - a team that had been searching in that area for any remnants they could find of the holy grail of aviation. Sometimes, when you're searching for a needle in the biggest haystack on the face of the earth, you produce a miracle.  Tonight, for one night only, we return to our audience and re-open the case that we left over 4 years ago.  Suddenly, it's the summer of 2019 again. And Jen Taylor hasn't missed a step.  This is a line I never thought I'd say again. Welcome back to Vanished. This is Amelia Earhart & Fred Noonan. Welcome to your weekly General Aviation news update, and this week we have 4 stories for you; Pilot Institute Community, Max 9 flies again, Mark Baker steps down from AOPA, and Robotics Firm claims to have found Amelia Earhart's plane! First up this week is our release of our exclusive Pilot Institute Community, or PIC for short. https://community.pilotinstitute.com We created the Community as a place for all our students to interact and learn from each other. Here, you will be able to find answers to any aviation questions you have, organized more logically than Facebook. You will get answers from our Subject Matter experts, Guest Instructors, and experienced Pilot Institute graduates. You will also be able to connect with others who are studying at the same time, on the same topic. You can even do chat live with other students directly into the course. The best part is, it's free and available with your current course login, no need to create a new account. Head over to community.pilotinstitute.com to get started! We'll also have an exclusive live event today at 4PM, and every day next week for our community kickoff event! Next up is the 737 Max 9, which has been approved to return to service after required inspections. The approval comes nearly three weeks after a door plug was blown out of an Alaska Airlines Max 9 climbing through 16,000 feet. FAA Administrator Whitaker issued a statement saying “The January 5 Boeing 737 MAX incident must never happen again. Let me be clear: This won't be back to business as usual for Boeing. We will not agree to any request from Boeing for an expansion in production or approve additional production lines for the 737-9 MAX until we are satisfied that the quality control issues uncovered during this process are resolved.” Hopefully this is the last we hear from Boeing with maintenance issues! Next up this week is AOPA's Mark Baker, who will step down when a suitable replacement has been found. Baker says he will stay for up to two additional years to ensure a smooth transition and that he will continue to run AOPA as normal until the transition occurs. There's no word on where MZark Baker will go or if he will retire after he is done at AOPA. We'll keep you updated if we see more. Last up this week, a Robotics Firm out of South Carolina claims to have possibly found Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra. The company used side-scan sonar to search a 5200 square mile area in the pacific. The Sonar return was found in the area working off of a 14 year old theory that Earhart's Navigator, Fred Noonan, may have failed to take into account crossing the international date line in his navigation calculation. This would have put Earhart and Noonan 60 miles west of their intended destination. The company was not able to dive on the return, so the claim is just that for now. We'll have to see if anyone can get back to that location to dive on the possible wreck. Alright, that's it! Have a great week and we'll see you next week. https://community.pilotinstitute.com https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/mark-baker-stepping-down-as-aopa-president/ https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/robotics-firm-confident-amelia-earharts-plane-found/ https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/alaska-says-max-9-grounding-cost-150-million-expects-boeing-to-pay/

They never made it. What became of the two adventurers? Lost at sea? Crash landed on a deserted island? Captured by the Japanese? We will explore all the options.   Branch of Hope:  The Branch of Hope Fund Recipient for this episode is Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships presented by the Ninety-Nines ninety-nines.org Each year Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships are usually awarded to qualified members for five different scholarship types, including two specialized scholarships: an Emergency Maneuver Training Scholarship and an International Scholarship for pilots in developing countries.  In addition, the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund (AEMSF) provides Research Scholarship Grants and, for Student Pilot members, the First Wings Awards. 99s members and other individuals have donated to the Fund through their estate bequests, individual gifts, and the Perpetual Scholarship program. On July 3, 1975, the Ministry of Justice in Japan responded to an inquiry by Amelia Earhart researcher and investigator Major Joe Gervais. Gervais had sent a letter to the Department of Immigration and Naturalization in Tokyo, operating on the hunch that Earhart had been taken prisoner and held on Saipan during WWII but under an assumed identity. The Ministry of Justice responded, saying the woman in their custody was known to them as Irene Craigmile. This was not a name mentioned by Gervais to the Japanese authorities. So, who is Irene Craigmile? Craigmile and Earhart were acquaintances and pilots who looked similar, but photos show they are two separate people. This begs the question for the “Japanese Capture” theory of Earhart's disappearance: who then went down with the plane that was apparently ditched near Buka Island in Papua New Guinea? Were these two women connected via some secret mission, and is the plane at Buka a version of Earhart's Electra 10-E? These questions and evidence are just a few of the puzzle pieces of the enduring mystery of Earhart's fateful last flight, meticulously stitched together by William “Bill” Pennington Snavely, Jr. in his latest book, Lost in Flight: Amelia Earhart, Giving Cover as a Decoy for a Spy Plane. In 2018, Bill was a guest on our show, where he outlined his research leading to a startling theory of Earhart's plane possibly having crashed near the coast of Matsungan Island near Buka, eventually sinking to a depth of 109 feet. Two main aspects of Bill's investigation that remain novel are that, unlike the other researchers, he calculated his flight tracking starting from the last known location and then traced backward and that his team is the only one with an aircraft to investigate whose characteristics match the Electra. Bill's multiple expeditions to Buka have yielded intriguing evidence supporting his claim, evidence which has previously been kept under wraps due to nondisclosure agreements. However, as his research in the intervening years continued, a new hybrid theory emerged from his discoveries that may solve the disconnect between “Japanese Capture” and the wreckage at Buka. Could it be that a failed reconnaissance mission led to one of the greatest coverups in US history? Bill Snavely is now free to disclose the shocking findings he revealed in his book. Also joining us is longtime friend and fellow podcaster Chris Williamson, whose podcast Chasing Earhart and its companion book, Rabbit Hole: The Vanishing of Amelia Earhart & Fred Noonan, is the definitive interview collection. Prepare to suit up as we dive for the truth behind one of the world's most famous and significant aviation enigmas. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.

Throughout the early decades of the 20th century, a young woman by the name of Amelia Earhart set out to do the impossible. The Wright Brothers had opened up the world to aviation, and Amelia was the one to push herself to the limits, breaking records to establish what we know as air travel today. Amelia spent the better part of her adult life traveling around the globe, documenting the effects of air travel on the human body, plus chartering the capabilities of early aircrafts by cataloging record-breaking altitudes and distances around the globe. On On 2 July 1937, Amelia and her navigator, Fred Noonan, finalized their flight path for the journey of a lifetime. Amelia knew this would be her last trip around the world before decidedly planning to hang her aviator jacket up for good when she was done. But fate had other plans. On 3 July 1937, at 08:43 AM, Amelia made her last radio transmission on her flight progress, and was never heard from again. To this day, scientists do not have a clear understanding of what went wrong or what happened to Amelia and her navigator. Some mysteries are never meant to be solved, But in this case, we have Amelia to thank for traveling the distance in air travel. The summertime is heating up with Episode 93 of Norm Nathan’s VoS. The number may just match today’s temp here in some parts of MA. It’s a scorchah! We have a DBG from July 2nd, 1995 which is titled: ‘Raiders of the Lost Birthday Book’ because we begin with Norm not being able to find said book and a quest may be needed! Was it just misplaced by Norm? Was it stolen by Sid Whittaker and WCCM? (a reference to some scandal back in Ep 91) Will Netflix buy the rights to this astonishing whodunnit? Stay tuned! Onward to the game: Our 1st player is Stan Roberts, calling in from Buffalo. He worked with Norm back on WHDH from 1970-72. They chat quite a bit before the game begins. Some WHDH history, station breaks, technology of the time, and how Norm got his overnight gig. Stan notes that “In an age when machinery is replacing man, you replaced a machine.” Wait until you hear Stan recall the great ad campaign for his show that was on a billboard along the SE Expressway. And there’s talk of Stan’s career when he returned to Buffalo. And now the other players: Michael from PA Tom in Cleveland Robert in Framingham Hope Schauer producing and playing in studio And the wild, different and crazy Ken Newman in traffic. Bdays: Polly Holiday John Sununu Lucy Baines Johnson Turpin Cheryl Ladd Jimmy McNichol And then it’s event time. And we get three! What year did Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappear over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to make the first round the world flight at the equator? What year did the Lawrence Welk Show premiere on ABC television? And in what year was The U.S. Army Air Corp created? The game is so exciting that it reminds Norm that just when he feels that he’s been in radio longer than he should be, nope. Not yet. This prompts a possible lead in the DBG Book theft! We get the details on an old survey that Lawrence welk had taken where one of the questions was, “Larry, what do you think of violence? It is revealed that Norm hosted a polka program which featured the one and only, Johnny Wilfahrt. And post-game we get a few more minutes of conversation with Norm and Stan which takes us through to the end. Ep 93, ‘Raiders of the Lost Birthday Book’ is comin’ atcha in 3, 2 and 1.
