We journey to the Little Cities of Black Diamonds, a collection of company towns, villages, mines, and settlements in a region around the borders of Athens, Perry, Morgan, and Hocking County. A region that powered America's industrial revolution and created the environment and foundation for the United Mine Workers, and the modern labor union movement. We learn all about the area from the people who have preserved the histories of this place, the staff and volunteers of the Little Cities of Black Diamonds. We head to San Toy, New Straitsville, Payne's Crossing, Hamburg, Hobo, and everything in between. The episode finishes with an interview with interdisciplinary sound artist Brian Harnetty about his work and its inspirations from Perry County and Shawnee. This episode features music from:Todd Jacops - "Rain Spring"The Peel - "Untitled"Brian Harnetty - "Wayne National Forest"Dead Winds of Summer - "Willow Creek 1"Pete Fosco - "Untitled 1"Powers/Rolin Duo - "Birdhouse"The Peel - "A Cautionary Tale"Weedghost - "Morning 04"Matthew J. The history of Athens, Ohio and its neighborhoods and people told through the historic West State Street Cemetery. A public and immersive piece of history for Southeast Ohio that is the final resting place for veterans all the way back to the Revolutionary War, escaped slaves who came to Athens for freedom, town founders, and many other people who walked these streets before us. Brian talks to a whole bunch of local historians, experts, and storytellers to learn more about this unique location. You will learn about W.E. Peters and his research into the cemetery you can see just by walking around, and the legacy he left behind. The early importance of the African-American settlers of Athens including the story of Andrew Jackson Davison (18:32) is told by a few special guests formerly of the Andrew Jackson Davison Club at Athens Middle School. The episode closes with another story from the town's history, involving the Currier Sisters and a railway detour told by Emily Beveridge. Along with commentary and interviews with Andrew Chiki (City of Athens), Jessica Cyders (Southeast Ohio History Center), Evan Shaw (WOUB Public Media), and Tom O'Grady (Southeast Ohio History Center), this episode also features the voice over talents of Emily Prince (Julia Cutler) and Dennis Delaney (W.E. Peters).Invisible Ground Theme: "Rain Spring" by Todd JacopsMusic (in order of sound appearance)Todd Jacops - "Rain Spring"Daniel Bachman - "Farnham"Todd Jacops - "Baritone 2"Matthew J. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Your band name is a dick joke and just because you live in New Orleans doesn't mean you can say you're from New Orleans. (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) It may have some talent on it but if you stop and really think about it, is this the worst Browns team ever? If only the crap ownership who own the two crap teams (Browns and Cavs) could give money to our one team in town that isn't total crap (Indians)... Just imagine how great that would be. The Haslams are baby eating goblins, and you know this to be true. A Day 366 Leap Year New Year's Celebration would be the Olympics of party': Another strong argument for a sequential calendar. (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins around the 1:07:00 mark) Lachlan MacKinnon’s  'Best Of Edition' Let Me Tell You A Story: “Creepin' on ah Come Up” (begins around the 1:16:00 mark) Baker being a popular pet name in the region is still dumb but it's still way better than naming a child Baker. Food brings people together, no matter where you're from. The best go-to's when eating cheap Chinese food. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins around the 1:52:00 mark) The best way to see Santa Claus each year. Mollie’s Weekly Report(s): $14,000 can of beer NFL celebration, "H.A.R.D." isn't the acronym Baker think it is, and cowboy hat wearing pigeons reportedly isn't a crime but it is really funny (in so many ways).  (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:24:00 mark) Weed is now as okay as alcohol but the drugs you get from your doctor are not okay, and other rules for MLB that reflect just how crazy and backwards our society is with drugs these days. Losing Kluber approaching the back-end of his career is nowhere near as bad as what it's going to be like when we also lose Lindor with his best years still yet ahead of him. Let's not forget that soon to be MVP and most exciting player in the NFL, Lamar Jackson, wasn't even the first pick by the Ravens in 2018, and can you imagine how differently fans would treat Baker Mayfield if that dude wasn't white? All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. Enjoy~ To contribute to this 100% listener supported show please go to our Patreon page by clicking here.
