The first four works date from the 1950s - all short-lived and more popular. Already in 1970, the two great cycles: the 12 Studies, which involve transcendental technique with Brazilian rhythms and urban and regional popular music; and the 12 Brazilian Waltzes in the Form of Studies, all in minor keys, with a darker sound and nocturnal character, with melodies reminiscent of serenades. His cycle of original works for the instrument ends with Batuque in 1980 when the composer honors the classical-popular piano of Brazilian virtuoso Ernesto Nazareth.Tracklist1. Modinha (1:52)2. Portland, Oregon-based Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. From spacious melancholic laments to transcendent minimalism, Anderson is coming from a place between country, blues, and drone. On her 2018 record, Cloud Corner, she touches on Tuareg scales from "desert blues," the finger-style picking of so-called “American Primitive,” and chiming sad cowboy chords, while continuously moving and traveling on her guitar. She joins us in-studio.Marisa Anderson's new 2022 record is Still, Here: Still, Here by Marisa Anderson Watch the individual songs below:

"Straight Up and Down" Samo Salamon: Dolphyology: Complete Eric Dolphy for Solo Guitar (Samo Records, 2022) Samo Salamon. Join us for this conversation with the amazing and extraordinarily talented guitarist, Yasmin Williams, whose unique fingerstyle and percussive techniques on guitar is a sight to behold. It's a stunning demonstration of virtuoso playing, fully demonstrated on her most recent album, Urban Driftwood, released in 2020. Yasmin recently performed at Newport Folk, and at the Ryman Auditorium, and was featured on a recent episode of Tiny Desk Home Edition. Yasmin is also up for Grammy consideration as Best New Artist and the Urban Driftwood album is up for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, among other categories. Yasmin is as engaging and fun to talk to as she is talented. So hop aboard the Roadcase bus for this wonderful episode with Yasmin Williams. Technical virtuosity and imaginative improvisation made Joe Diorio (born: Joseph Louis Diorio) one of the busiest jazz session guitarists of the '60s and '70s. Reviewing a mid-'60s performance, influential jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote that Diorio was "one of the most mature and uncompromising (new) plectrists to work the room since Joe Pass." Waterbury, Connecticut-born Diorio spent much of the early '60s in Chicago, playing with such stellar jazz musicians as saxophonist Sonny Stitt and trombone player Bennie Green. He made his recording debut on tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris' 1961 album, Exodus to Jazz. Together with trumpet and saxophone player Ira Sullivan, Diorio relocated to Miami, Florida, where he quickly found a place in the city's thriving jazz scene. In addition to playing with top-notch musicians including Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard, and Stanley Turrentine, he led his own trio, featuring Bob Magnusson and Jim Plank. Since releasing his debut solo album, Solo Guitar, in 1975, Diorio has gone on to record more than a dozen impressive platters, including tribute albums to Wes Montgomery and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Starting with a jazz improvisation class that he taught at the University of Miami, Diorio increasingly turned his focus to teaching. Since relocating to Los Angeles in the late '70s, he has taught in the studio/jazz guitar department of the University of Southern California and the GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology). He has written several instructional books including Fusion and Intervallic Designs.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In Dublin to perform the album Ceol Ársa Cláirsí at the Tradition Now weekender in the National Concert Hall, Steve Cooney's interpretations of ancient Irish harp tunes for solo guitar has added something new to the canon. There's ancient magic at work here as these tunes were either composed or collected from the beginning of the 1600s to the end of the 1700s. As a taster for a forthcoming extended Make Me An Island special on his work Episode 48 takes a detailed look at this beautifully crafted and thoroughly researched piece of work with the master himself as our guide... https://stevecooneymusic.com/siopa
Since 2000, Inwood-based singer-songwriter and guitarist, Chris Way has been making and recording a mix of folk, lo-fi pop, classical guitar, ambient, & improvisational guitar works. In 2009 he released "Needle Out" - a raw, melodic set of ten songs about growing up in Florida. 2010 saw a change in direction with the release of a collection of lo-fi, improvised and semi-improvised works entitled "Los Caracoles: Improvisations for Solo Guitar & Voice, Vol. 1." His latest release, "White Hidden Flower" – is a 17-song mix of classical instrumental and folk-pop originals and covers that are dynamically soft and tender, dark and intense, clean and lo-fi. In this episode I talk to the award winning guitarist Steve Cooney about his experience of being initiated into an Aboriginal tribe and learning didgeridoo from the tribe elders, music as intuition and the communication that takes place between melody player and accompanist during the live music experience. We also discuss his innovative Geometric Visualisation system for musical notation which he says is internally based on Aboriginal art. You can hear more about this system here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hapQc1rHPyU We also hear a clip from the track Celia Connellan from Steve's album Clár Ársa Cláirsí: Tunes of the Irish Harpers for Solo Guitar and a track O'Farrell's Welcome from Steve's band Éiníní.
A new year, a new spin-off podcast for Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio. This one's gonna stick. It's got the smarmy title of ADULT LISTENING. The whole idea behind this program stems from a lifetime of music collecting and accumulation that spans a dozen different genres, none of which fits all that well together - but baby, we're going to make it work.I want this show to focus on everything from instrumental guitar to 78rpm records from 1920s Greece to R&B to Cambodian pop to rocksteady to deep country & blues, African, and whatever else I think we all should listen to together. Mostly older, but some newer. All phenomenal music for adults to enjoy. This is a special 65 minutes of solo acoustic guitarists from around the world, with all of them barring one exception being new & active 21st-century players. Not the usual Dynamite Hemorrhage program, and that's why it's a "special edition". You'll hear guitar geniuses like NICK JONAH DAVIS, GWENIFER RAYMOND, JULIAN LEDRU, MATTHEW J. How can I know if it's my guitar or my technique to blame when my hottest licks just keep failing me..!?Truthfully - I felt that I'm kinda walking on thin ice with this topic... so I invited the Shaman of Shred himself to discuss all those crucial technical elements when racing through the fretboard in lightning speed - a big welcome to the Sorcerer of Soloing, Sensei Mika Tyyskä alias Mr. Fastfinger!A little disclaimer - this podcast is not about the guitars we make in my company. Instead, it's simply a dialogue to help you, who are interested in learning more about your own instrument. The brand of the guitar makes no difference whatsoever. These podcasts have been edited from my Weekly Wednesday Q&A YouTube live streams. You'll probably notice this from time to time when listening. If you feel you're missing a detail due to the lack of moving picture, you can always find the equivalent content on YouTube! Talk to you soon,Juha

Four six-string masters going solo are the focus for this fortnight's podcast, and they cover the gamut from acoustic true-believers to studio mavens ready to mix it up with multi-tracking and effects pedals. What are the benefits - and dangers - of attempting jazz without compadres? Wouldn't you know it, Pat & Mike have opinions on that topic. Pop matters focuses squarely on the King - at least for white people of a certain age - Elvis Presley. Steve Khan – EVIDENCE; Duck Baker – SPINNING SONG; Joe Pass – VIRTUOSO; Leo Kottke – THE BEST.

This stellar lesson introduces you to the basic vocabulary of blues phrasing that came out of the pre-WWII Delta style via the legendary Muddy Waters. As Keith says, this stuff is easier to play than it is to read, so he walks you through it - the droning bass on the low E (with pick or thumb), the accompanying finger-picked high E, the gritty but simple lines taken from the basic blues scale. In short order, you can become your own down-home blues rhythm section, which will strengthen your work when you play with a group. This lesson includes Power Tab and is featured on the following CD compilations: BLUES U, Rhythm Guitar SWAT Camp, Blues Bash.
