Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/EyU7TCE1QJQWith Brexit, the US presidential election and the Covid pandemic, conspiracy theories now seem to be everywhere. It's commonly argued that the internet has fuelled their popularity, leading to a loss of faith in mainstream media, science, democracy and even truth itself. But what if the rise of conspiracy theories is a symptom rather than the cause of a collapse of trust in civic institutions? This lecture was recorded by Peter Knight on 14th November 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Peter Knight is a Professor of American Studies at the University of Manchester, and has held visiting fellowships at New York University, Harvard, Leiden University and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in Amsterdam. The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/conspiracy-theoriesGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. ‘Roadworks, inflation and Brexit' are among the reasons it's been difficult to get many of Devon's buses back on track. That's according to the top executive at Stagecoach South West. In the latest edition of Devoncast from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Peter Knight, the company's managing director is the main guest. Mr Knight explains how reliability is often passengers' greatest concern, that roadworks at the blight of his working life, and how a huge public investment in electric buses is on the way. Also in this edition, why the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association wants more cash for farmers and landowners to prevent a further decline in the moor's iconic animal. When moors are made for grazing cattle, but not ponies, farmers favour cows. Plus, one year ahead of the women's Rugby World Cup coming to England, with seven matches to be played in Exeter, we get the views of aspiring teenage players at Exeter Saracens. This week's Devoncast is presented by Paul Nero

Michael Travers joined an exclusive club in 2021 when he became one of a handful of NSW jockeys to acquire a dual trainer/jockey's licence. A short time later he became the first to train and ride a winner in his home state, when successful with Estaverdi at Gundagai. A minor injury sustained at Leeton in April was enough to see Michael make the decision to train exclusively. We recorded this interview just a few days before his Gundagai double on Sunday. He talks about the reluctance of Racing NSW to issue dual licences a few years ago. He says Michelle Payne indirectly helped his cause. Michael says he's a little surprised more jockeys haven't availed themselves of the opportunity. He says attaining the licence was one thing- finding stabling in Wagga was another. Michael looks back on the thrill of his history making feat at Gundagai in 2021. He rode another winner on the day for an outside stable. He says it wasn't easy to attract owners who were happy to have the same person training and riding their horses. He pays tribute to great supporters Robyn Tatham and Peter Knight. Michael looks back on the heavy workload associated with his dual career. He knew he couldn't keep going forever. The experienced horseman looks back on teen years when his grandfather introduced him to racing. He was quickly besotted by the atmosphere of the track. Michael nominates the two horses who whetted his appetite for the game. He talks of work experience gained with two high profile Rosehill trainers of the early 1990's. One of those trainers told him he'd never make a jockey. Travers looks back on the university studies which brought him a Bachelor Of Education Degree. With his desire to be a jockey still bubbling under the surface he gained a start with Noel Mayfield-Smith who was then training at Hawkesbury. He couldn't get the hang of it. Totally discouraged, Michael decided to put his teaching degree to good use. He talks of his time at two Sydney schools instructing in three subjects. The jockey/trainer talks of his fondness for the piano. He learned the art early in life. Michael says he was 24 years old when he approached Racing NSW apprentice coach Maurice Logue. The ever helpful Logue arranged a pre vocational course for young Travers with Albury trainer Rob Wellington. Just when Rob was about to sign him up, Michael's dad became seriously ill. He returned to the teaching trade. He says he later returned to the Wellington stable and his riding career began. He went within a nose of a win on his very first day. Michael talks of a transfer to Newcastle trainer Paul Perry. He recalls the champion sprinter he got to ride work, and some early wins for the Perry stable. He talks of his all time favourite horse Piracy who just happened to be owned by his mother Rae. The popular Riverina horseman looks back on his career injury list. He regards himself as relatively lucky. Michael talks of his intention to continue riding trackwork, and acknowledges the good recent run he's had with in form Jean Van Overmeire. He acknowledges the support of wife Jodie and makes special mention of 10 year old son Maverick and step children Cameron and Alaska. It's a laid back chat with one of Australia's most versatile horsemen.

Episode 4 explores how the environment on and around the Coast Path inspires artists and creatives. We had the absolute privilege of chatting with renowned contemporary artist Kurt Jackson; celebrated musician Peter Knight; and artist, writer, and fundraiser Emma Scattergood. Each artist discusses their very personal relationship with the coastal landscape and how immersing themselves in its awe-inspiring beauty, provokes and inspires their artwork and music. Kurt Jackson is a dedicated environmentalist and true polymath whose artistic practice ranges from his trademark visceral plein-air sessions to studio work and embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, large canvases, print-making and sculpture. Kurt and his wife Caroline live and work in the most-westerly town in Britain, St Just-in-Penwith where in 2015 they set up the Jackson Foundation. Jackson says that his ‘creativity, visual art and writing is often inspired, motivated and in response to the typography, biodiversity and changing seasonality of the coastal habitats'. Peter Knight is a violinist who was 'discovered' by Ashley Hutchings, founder of the folk band Steeleye Span. He was invited to join the Band when they were just on the cusp of fame and spent 45 years touring the world with them, making several Gold Albums and appearing in their own BBC series. He left in 2013 to focus on the Gigspanner Trio and the Gigspanner Big Band, and most recently joined with The Salt Path author, Raynor Winn, on Saltlines – a collaboration of prose and music celebrating the South West Coast Path. Emma Scattergood is a writer, artist and educator, specialising in community-facing projects. After many years as a journalist/author and then a university lecturer, her latest project is walking and drawing the SW Coast Path and sharing elements of that process in Creative Path workshops, encouraging intuitive, creative engagement with nature. When not on the Path or in her studio, Emma also works part-time on a community project for a writing development agency and as a lead trustee for The Story Works (a children's charity she co-founded).

The industry of providing people with investment advice has been around for a long time. Just how long is the subject of this week's Merryn Talks Money. Host Merryn Somerset Webb speaks with Peter Knight and Helen Paul, two of the five authors of Invested: How Three Centuries of Stock Market Advice Reshaped Our Money, Markets and Minds. The new work is a review of centuries of pamphlets and books offering investment advice, and the authors didn't come away very impressed. Too much of it, they write, offers false hope to an audience desperate to change themselves and their lives without putting in the work. Want to get rich quick? Knight says don't bother with the actual investing—just write a best-selling book telling others how to do it. The authors say much of the advice doled out by generations of writers is remarkably similar: look for value, don't pay too much in commissions, don't over-trade, and don't fall for fanciful stories. A discussion with Army Historians Dr. Peter Knight and Dr. Robert Kirkland about the role of Army Historians in the field and in combat.
Peter Knight is an Australian composer, trumpeter, and sound artist. He has been Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra for the last ten years, performed with Anthony Braxton, Senyawa, and Alvin Lucier, and played at some of the most significant festivals and venues in the world. He has also recently released his twelfth album, Shadow Phase, on the inimitable @Room40 imprint. @phjk From Peter: "This is a mix of tracks that have inspired me, particularly across COVID when I was craving that sense of 'strange beauty' that each of these works impart - at least to me. Sometimes when I am making music I will 'check in' with albums that relate somehow to the music I am working on, and each of these tracks has a quality that seemed relevant to what I was working on for Shadow Phase." Singer Maddy Prior and violinist Peter Knight were at the heart of the success of folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span. In this candid interview with Matthew Bannister on stage at the Indoor Festival of Folk at Cecil Sharp House, they recall the heady days of rock n roll excess during the 1970s and movingly describe the role of music in their lives. Peter reveals he once appeared on Top of the Pops dressed as a Womble and Maddy describes the gig where they dropped thousands of pound notes onto the heads of the audience. The band is famous for having countless different line ups and they speak about the rows that often led to one or more members departing. One of the earliest examples of a prog rock record was Days of Future Passed, the second studio album by The Moody Blues. Originally a rhythm and blues band, The Moody Blues were in difficult financial straits when they convinced the record company to combine their music with orchestral elements and interludes in a single album. The group recorded much of their sessions first, then provided these to conductor Peter Knight, who directed the London Festival Orchestra (the house orchestra for Decca Records) in arrangements and orchestral interludes. The Moody Blues for this album are Justin Hayward on guitar, piano, and vocals, John Lodge on bass and vocals, Mike Pinder on keyboards and vocals, Ray Thomas on flute, piano, and vocals, and Graeme Edge on drums and vocals.Days of Future Passed is created as a concept around a day in the life of "an everyday man." It begins with a track appropriately entitled "The Day Begins," and concludes with a piece labeled "The Night," which we know as "Nights in White Satin," and "Late Lament." The album was somewhat successful when first released, but would climb in popularity over a long period of time, particularly on the growing strength of "Nights in White Satin" on FM radio in the U.S. It would eventually peak on the album charts at number 2 in the U.S. - in 1972!Brian takes us on this day trip. Dawn: Dawn Is a FeelingKeyboardist Mike Pinder wrote this song, the first track sung after the Instrumental overture and spoken recitation. As the name implies, it represents the start of the day.Lunch BreakBassist John Lodge sings lead on this song which he also wrote. The fast pace is suggestive of the hectic period of lunch hour on a business day. The song has an orchestral introduction which was recorded separately from the rest of the track.Tuesday Afternoon Also known as "Forever Afternoon" or "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)", the song was originally intended to be named "Tuesday Afternoon" but was changed for the album. It was released as "Tuesday Afternoon" when released as a single. Justin Hayward wrote the song in Lypiatt Park on a (you guessed it) Tuesday afternoon.Nights In White Satin/Late LamentHayward composed this hit at the age of 19 in Belgium, inspired by a gift of satin bedsheets given by his girlfriend. The song is about a yearning love from afar. The strength of this song would provide the success for both the album and The Moody Blues as a whole. Late Lament was written by drummer Graeme Edge, and is recited by keyboardist Mike Pinder. This is the only album track on which the band recorded with the London Festival Orchestra rather than separately. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Won't You Be My Neighbor? (the main theme to the children's series Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood)The television series starring Fred Rogers debuted nationally this month. STAFF PICKS:Tomorrow by Strawberry Alarm ClockBruce starts us off with a psychedelic and sunshine pop group out of Los Angeles. This song is the first single off the group's second album, "Wake Up...It's Tomorrow." It would hit number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and would be their second and final top 40 hit. "But right now I am with you, and together we can make it through."Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song) by The BuckinghamsRob's staff pick continues in the sunshine pop genre with a band out of Chicago. This is off their album "Portraits," and made it to number 12 on the charts. "Sunshine Pop" is rooted in easy listening and "advertising jingles." The Buckinghams got their name in an attempt to channel some of the success of the British Invasion. They had 5 top 40 hits in 1967. Nobody But Me by the Human BeinzWayne brings us a well-known cover originally performed by The Isley Brothers. There are over 100 "no's" in this song and 47 "nobody's," making it quite literally a quite negative song. While this would be the only entry into the top 10, it would become a staple of Fraternity parties from then on. Sunday Mornin' by Spanky & Our GangBrian features Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane as lead woman for the band. Spanky & Our Gang had a number of hits in the 60's. This sunshine pop song peaked at number 30 as a single, and preceded the album by several months. COMEDY TRACK:Here Come the Judge by Shorty LongThis funky novelty song was inspired by a skit on Rowan & Martin's "Laugh In," and was Long's biggest hit, rising to number 4 on the charts.
Raynor Winn's best-selling book “The Salt Path” tells how she and her husband Moth became homeless just as he was diagnosed with a terminal neuro-degenerative disease. Despite this, they set off to walk the 630 challenging miles of the South West Coast Path which stretches from Minehead in Somerset along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall to Poole Harbour in Dorset. The redemptive story of their dogged determination, loving relationship and close connection with the natural world made the book a best seller. And now Raynor has teamed up with Peter Knight's Gigspanner Big Band (featuring Hannah Martin and Philip Henry of Edgelarks, John Spiers of Bellowhead, guitarist Roger Flack and percussionist Sacha Trochet) to create a new show called Saltlines - which combines traditional music from the South West Coast with new words about the area. In this fascinating episode of High Performance Academy's Tuned In podcast, we head off on a real tangent as America's Cup electrical engineer Peter Knight — a member of this year's winning Emirates Team New Zealand syndicate — drops by the studio to give us some insight into the high-stakes world of top-tier boat racing.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-in While motorsport is more our speed, we were blown away by Peter's insight into this big-money racing arena. We take a look at the parallels between the two worlds when it comes to the wiring, data logging, and aerodynamics, as well as the big differences. How do you accurately measure velocity, for example, when the "track" you're racing on is moving and has a speed and direction of its own?Peter also gives us a really interesting look into how these jaw-dropping hydrofoils actually work, and how the incredible speeds — up to three times the actual windspeed and magnitudes faster than the previous generation of Americas Cup's boats -—are achieved. Want to learn more about motorsport wiring? Claim your spot to the next FREE lesson: hpcdmy.co/wiringlessonfTo wrap up, Peter talks about how data can be used to improve the tactics and strategies when racing, as well as his own climb up through the ranks in the sailing world, dealing with sensitive electronics in some extremely challenging environments, and finally rebuilding and rewiring an entire boat overnight after a catastrophic near-sinking. All this and much more can be found inside this unique episode of High Performance Academy Tuned In podcast.
