Meet Juan Tigre, the bilingual alt-rock alter-ego of guitarist/vocalist John Maestas. Inspired by the iconic high desert imagery of New Mexico and imbued with the expansive folklore of the southwest. Psychedelic distorted guitars float over a video game sound palette with rhythms & melodies that draw upon influences from J Dilla, Jimi Hendrix, Pixies and Thundercat. Based in New Orleans, Maestas has become well known locally for his guitar and production talents through his work with Nicholas Payton, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, Alex Ebert, Papa Jon Gros, Fiend, Elzhi, and Nesby Phips. Juan Tigre's debut album ‘The Dream Catcher' was released April 17th, 2020 and established the band as a new voice in the alt-rock scene. The upcoming album ‘Azúl Arriba, Blue Below' is a collection of ambient instrumental songs set for release on May 13th, 2022.
This week we dive into a heavy week on twitter and break down some viral tweets from this past week. Intro Cut: Fiend International Jones- "Buzzin ft. Nesby Phips" Outro Cut: After Ashes- GUTS ft MoneyFourDrugs (sneak preview)
Nesby Phips has established himself as an artist whose musicality is of the first order in his burgeoning career. He grew up living in both the New Orleans neighborhood of Hollygrove and the city's Jane Alley area of the 3rd Ward, across the street from the Orleans Parish Prison. In addition to his dichotomous surroundings, Phips's family is a musical one. Mahalia Jackson's grand-nephew attended McMain High School with Lil Wayne, Curren$y, and Mack Maine, all of whom he would later record and produce. A strong songwriter, Nesby's sound draws from the jazz, rhythm and blues, and the rap traditions of New Orleans. You can also hear the influence of diverse global sounds such as Ethiopian jazz. On his last album Therapy, the renaissance man combines all of his talents to present the jazz and blues-infused opus. We discuss all of that, what he's been doing since then, and a lot more. I was attending a wedding in New Orleans over the weekend so I reached out to NOLA native Nesby Phips to grab some lunch and record a podcast. He’s engrained in the community there and the music of NO is engrained in him. He grew up in Hollygrove and the 3rd Ward with hip hop luminaries like Lil Wayne, Curren$y and Mack Maine. As a rapper/producer he’s worked on albums with them as well. He’s also put in work with NO legend Juvenile and some notables outside of NO like Wiz Khalifa and H.E.R. We chopped it up in the 3rd Ward at Heard Dat Kitchen. He told us about his family lineage, being the grand nephew of legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and about the time he rode a horse named Shiloh at 4am, somewhere on the outskirts of Boston. I’m also fortunate to have his music as the theme music for Keepin’ It A Hundo. All of the music you hear on my podcast is courtesy of Nesby Phips and his instrumental album Phipstrumentals.

Musician and producer Nesby Phips may be best known worldwide for his work with Lil Wayne and other hip hop artists, but here in New Orleans his equally impressive claim to fame is that Mahlia Jackson was his great aunt. Nesby is one of the owners and gatekeepers of Ms Jackson s copyrighted material and is working on cementing her legacy in various ways. Nesby is also the force behind the musical project Black Man 4 Sale and the voice of the podcasts "Am I Tripping " and "Call Me Old Fashioned." If you live in New Orleans there s a good chance you ve spent time with Joe Bikulege even if you didn t know it. For the last 14 years Joe has been the owner of Le Bon Temps Roule on Magazine Street. Joe is also a big supporter of Cops 2, the citizens support group for the NOPD 2nd District. If you re checking this out before Saturday October 21st, go support Cops 2 at the first ever Cochon de Lait Festival at Palmer Park. Marci Schramm knows a thing or two about festivals. For ten years she was the Executive Director of the French Quarter Festival and presided over its journey from local party to major festival with a bigger economic impact on New Orleans than Jazz Fest. Yes, really. Today Marci helps her husband run publishing company River Road Press and is Director of Development for the New Orleans Ballet Association. Photos at Wayfare by Alison Moon.
