Coach Tyrone Nesby shares his journey from JUCO to UNLV and eventually to the NBA. He shares how his JUCO experience impacted his career and what it was like to led UNLV to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Coach Tarkanian led the Runnin' Rebels to the Final Four against Duke. After going undrafted he played in the CBA and eventually signed with the LA Clippers. He was on the team while Donald Sterling was the owner, Elgin Baylor was the General Manager and coaches like Alvin Gentry, Dennis Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were on staff. He was traded to the Washington Wizards where he would play alongside Michael Jordan, Coach Nesby talks about that first practice when MJ came out of retirement and what it was like to play alongside MJ. After his time in the NBA he played overseas before finishing his career in the ABA. Coach Nesby transitioned into coaching AAU and then took over at Muhlenberg HS in Pennsylvania, where he coached a team that had very little success and took them into state championship. Three years after being hired he was named Coach of the Year on the Pennsylvania Sportswriters Class 5A All-State team. Coach Nesby stepped down as the Head Coach at Muhlenberg HS to move out west and pursue college coaching opportunities. Currently he's training players in Las Vegas and working on some projects, he provides tremendous insights as a player and as a coach!

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, July 22. The chance for rain has passed, but what remains is heat and humidity. According to the National Weather Service, it will be mostly sunny and humid Thursday with a high near 89 degrees. Adding to this will be hazy skies Thursday night and Friday morning as the smoke from several west coast wildfires is reaching midwestern states. A teenage girl who took advanced classes and played on her high school basketball team was found dead this week with a bullet wound in a crashed car she had borrowed while visiting her older sister in Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids police on Wednesday identified Tyliyah Whitis, 15, of Peoria, Ill, as the teen who was discovered Tuesday morning in the one-car crash outside the Hawthorne Hills apartment complex in the 2200 block of C Street SW. Police said Whitis had been shot at least once and the vehicle had sustained significant damage. Cedar Rapids public safety spokesperson Greg Buelow said the cause and manner of death has not yet been determined — that will come from the State Medical Examiner's Office following an autopsy. But police are investigating the death as a homicide. Whitis's sister, T'yanna Nesby, told the Gazette that Whitis was a straight A student back in Peoria, who worked two jobs and wanted to one day start her own business. Forty Iowans, including some from the Cedar Rapids area, had to undergo treatment for rabies after they were potentially in contact with a rabid bat at a zoo in Omaha. More than 180 individuals were advised to receive the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, which contains the rabies vaccine, after a wild bat was found near a person attending one of the Henry Doorly Zoo's multiple overnight campouts at the aquarium earlier this month. A total of 186 overnight campers, including youth and adult groups, were contacted by the Nebraska public health department, the https://omaha.com/news/local/186-overnight-campers-at-omaha-zoo-potentially-exposed-to-rabid-bat-found-in-aquarium/article_2be933ac-e0ec-11eb-8d6a-3f93e96f2121.html (Omaha World-Herald reported). Public health officials in Nebraska recommended all campers who stayed at the zoo overnight June 29, June 30, July 2 and July 3 receive the treatment. As it promised, University of Iowa Health Care plans to reward more than 12,000 employees it required over the last year to either forfeit raises, absorb pay cuts, shed earned vacation time or take unpaid leave to ease its budget woes in the worst throes of COVID-19. The one-time lump sum payments — coming Sept. 1 if approved next week by the Board of Regents — will vary in amount depending on the eligible worker's base salary as of June 30, 2021, according to documents made public this week.  In total, UIHC expects to pay out $26.6 million to over 12,000 eligible employees based on a projected hospital operating margin of over 7 percent for the budget year that ended June 30.  Luka Garza has been selected as the 2020-21 Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year, the league announced Wednesday. Garza is the fifth Hawkeye chosen as the male winner in the past 35 years, joining wrestlers Brent Metcalf (2008), Barry Davis (1985) and Ed Banach (1983), as well as football player Chuck Long (1986). Nesby Phips has established himself as an artist whose musicality is of the first order in his burgeoning career. He grew up living in both the New Orleans neighborhood of Hollygrove and the city's Jane Alley area of the 3rd Ward, across the street from the Orleans Parish Prison. In addition to his dichotomous surroundings, Phips's family is a musical one. Mahalia Jackson's grand-nephew attended McMain High School with Lil Wayne, Curren$y, and Mack Maine, all of whom he would later record and produce. A strong songwriter, Nesby's sound draws from the jazz, rhythm and blues, and the rap traditions of New Orleans. You can also hear the influence of diverse global sounds such as Ethiopian jazz. The new head boys basketball coach at Muhlenberg didn’t start playing organized basketball until eighth grade. He began his sophomore season as the last guy on the bench at Cairo (Ill.) High School. Believing that nothing is impossible, a decade later he found himself playing in the NBA -- and as a teammate of Michael Jordan. It is the same message he conveys to his players at Muhlenberg, a program that went 5-17 last season and has won just six Berks Conference games over the past four seasons. Nesby brings a vast wealth of basketball experience to the Muhls. He played 255 games in the NBA over four seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards, the latter with Jordan. Nesby scored more than 1,000 points in two seasons at UNLV. He has coached AAU teams for the past four years, including his son, Tyrone Nesby IV, who helped lead Reading High to a state championship last season. “My first NBA game was when I played in the NBA,” Nesby tells Zeke. “I had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as an assistant coach. The guys knew I wanted to be a coach when I got done playing basketball. Every time we went on the road I sat behind Michael Jordan on the plane and on the bus and talked a lot. I took advantage of that.” Nesby tells Zeke that he got to the NBA from being the last guy on his high school bench “with a lot of hard work and dedication. I never stopped learning. It doesn’t matter where you started. It’s all about where you finish.” When Zeke asks Nesby what his coaching style at Muhlenberg will be, he replies: “We are doing a lot of getting the ball out quicker. X’s and O’s are big to me, I’m all about plays. Different defense principles, I’m big on that. Teaching can overcome some talent gaps. I don’t have to have the best talent in the county, as long as I have kids that at least know the game a little bit. If you want respect, you gotta give respect. Give me some effort, show me that you really want to be here, that’s enough for me. You can work hard all you want to, you gotta work smart. I have been here (Berks County) four years now. I notice a lot of kids coming to my camp; there are a lot of fundamentals not being taught. We do a lot of fundamentals.” As for his expectations for next season, Nesby replies that “it’s definitely too early to tell. I just told the kids, I do not want to be done in February when our regular season is over.” Nesby encourages his players to play other sports as well. “I tell the kids go play football, go play baseball, I’m OK with that,” he says. “I try to schedule around other sports (in the offseason) so the kids can go play all they want to.”
