There's a mouthful of memories in every family – especially if your family is in the food biz! On this week's show, we hear from New Orleanians whose parents and grandparents gave them a passion for food and a love for their community. We begin with writer and philanthropist Randy Fertel, whose 2011 memoir, The Gorilla Man and the Empress of Steak, tells the story of his larger-than-life parents. His mother, Ruth U. Fertel, founded Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, now a worldwide establishment, right here in the Crescent City. Then, we learn about New Orleans' famous muffuletta sandwich, which is said to have been invented at Central Grocery, the Italian deli established in the French Quarter in 1906. We bring you an oral history from NOLA Life Stories, in which third-generation owner Salvatore "Tommy" Tusa describes the evolution of this family business, as told to Mark Cave of the Historic New Orleans Collection. And finally, we get the story of Barrow's Catfish, which has been a cornerstone of the Hollygrove neighborhood since 1943. Deirdre Barrow Johnson and her husband, Kenneth discuss their family's legacy – one that began with a fried catfish sandwich sold from Deirdre's grandfather's barroom door. We talk about the beginnings of the Swisha House, The Chopstars and how they have evolved over the years. It was great to see The Chopstars all around #SXSW2023, they definitely held it down all over the city. I even got a literal candle from @DJCandlestick. Crazy! Nesby Phips has established himself as an artist whose musicality is of the first order in his burgeoning career. He grew up living in both the New Orleans neighborhood of Hollygrove and the city's Jane Alley area of the 3rd Ward, across the street from the Orleans Parish Prison. In addition to his dichotomous surroundings, Phips's family is a musical one. Mahalia Jackson's grand-nephew attended McMain High School with Lil Wayne, Curren$y, and Mack Maine, all of whom he would later record and produce. A strong songwriter, Nesby's sound draws from the jazz, rhythm and blues, and the rap traditions of New Orleans. You can also hear the influence of diverse global sounds such as Ethiopian jazz. On his last album Therapy, the renaissance man combines all of his talents to present the jazz and blues-infused opus. We discuss all of that, what he's been doing since then, and a lot more. I was attending a wedding in New Orleans over the weekend so I reached out to NOLA native Nesby Phips to grab some lunch and record a podcast. He’s engrained in the community there and the music of NO is engrained in him. He grew up in Hollygrove and the 3rd Ward with hip hop luminaries like Lil Wayne, Curren$y and Mack Maine. As a rapper/producer he’s worked on albums with them as well. He’s also put in work with NO legend Juvenile and some notables outside of NO like Wiz Khalifa and H.E.R. We chopped it up in the 3rd Ward at Heard Dat Kitchen. He told us about his family lineage, being the grand nephew of legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and about the time he rode a horse named Shiloh at 4am, somewhere on the outskirts of Boston. I’m also fortunate to have his music as the theme music for Keepin’ It A Hundo. All of the music you hear on my podcast is courtesy of Nesby Phips and his instrumental album Phipstrumentals.

Rap Snacks is already a successful brand, with Master P's potato chips and popcorn being sold in retailers across the country. This maybe something to look into, LOL. You must give it up to him though for always being innovative! The three-time Grammy winner, Jill Scott is celebrating the 20-year anniversary of Who Is Jill Scott? in 2020 by heading out on tour. Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 was released on July 18, 2000, via Hidden Beach. The 18-track LP includes the singles "Gettin' In the Way," "A Long Walk," and "The Way." For the folks in the DMV, she'll be here in Hanover, MD at Maryland LIVE on 2/14/20! Lil Wayne unveils a new cannabis brand "GKUA Ultra Premium." Apparently, the strain will feature the "highest natural levels of THC available," with every product being officially tasted and tested by Weezy himself. The first of which is deemed the limited-edition "Hollygrove flower strain," which is set to hit stores in the near future. Can't wait for this one!! Your girl Rihanna can REALLY "take a bow" as the first Black woman whose album spend 200 weeks on the Billboard 200 list. Released in January 2016, ANTI represented a marked left-turn for Rihanna, featuring a woozy, low-key sound not usually showcased by the prolific pop star; it featured the No. 1-charting Drake collaboration “Work,” as well as a cover of Tame Impala’s “New Person, Same Old Mistakes.” Additionally, she was ranked the seventh most-streamed female artist on Spotify for the month of November even though she hasn’t dropped an album in almost four years. She never ceases to amaze. Also this week, in studio we had DMV rap artist "BIG-O." Check him out everywhere @35big_o for music and show updates.
