This week in the Flamingo Lounge I sat down with visual artist, Jeff Garbaz, on August 7, 2025 to get a behind-the-scenes viewpoint. Jeff Garbaz has been directing videos and photography for the last 20 years in the entertainment business. He has made a name for himself in the industry by directing video screens in a live atmosphere and has worked all over the world. Some of the venues where he has directed video include Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Roseland Theater in New York City, the Hard Rock in Vegas, and the Masters golf tournament in Augusta. He has also directed tours all over California, the West Coast, and the East Coast. Jeff has worked with over 100 Grammy Award winners in many different genres, including artists such as Crosby, Stills and Nash; B.B. King; Weezer; Buddy Guy; Bonnie Raitt; Doc Watson; Lou Reed; and David Sanborn. He is also one of Carl Palmer's (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer) video directors. Jeff began his career as the singer and songwriter for a band out of Buffalo called “Last Lemming.” After performing on most of the prominent stages in Buffalo, New York, and touring in places like New York City, Jeff moved from being on stage to photographing and doing portraits for other bands. Jeff's photography has been featured in newspapers and magazines, such as The Buffalo News, in over 100 issues.

Mara De Luca's (b. 1973, Washington D.C.) paintings evoke a sense of atmospheric abstractions that bring to mind dusk, sunsets, and planetary orbs. Throughout her work there is a sense of reflected ambient light. De Luca's work today extends the celebration of illusionism, romanticism, and the sublime with a deeply informed response to modernist painting. De Luca received an MFA from CalArts, Los Angeles, CA and a BA from Columbia University, NY. Her work has been displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and is in prominent collections, including the Buck Collection at UC Irvine, JP Morgan Chase, New York; Fidelity, Boston; Alexander Plaza Berlin, Germany; New York Medical College, New York; and the University of Oslo, Norway. She has been reviewed in Artforum, Cultured Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Artweek LA, and others. De Luca is a recipient of the 2019 California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists. She has taught Painting at UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis and UC Riverside. Based in Los Angeles for over two decades, De Luca now lives and works in New York. A singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs, Bob Schneider is one of the most-celebrated musicians in Austin. Combining diverse styles, Schneider's music spans genres, blending elements of folk, rock, rap, funk, bluegrass, reggae and country with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic. Schneider has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards including: Best Album, Best Songwriter, Best Musician, and Best Male Vocals making him the most decorated artist in Austin's music history. He started gaining national recognition with his major-label debut Lonelyland. A fiercely-independent artist, Schneider opted to start his own label, Shockorama Records, which has afforded him the freedom to make the music his fans love, on his own terms. Schneider's live performances, both solo and with the band, are legendary. He has two appearances on the Austin City Limits television show and is also in the 20th year of his residency at The Saxon Pub. Bob is also an accomplished visual artist who transforms found visual media into thought-provoking works of art that challenge the viewer's perceptions of contemporary and popular culture. He juxtaposes iconic figures from comic books and other mass media and places them in everyday situations, leaving the viewer to interpret the meaning of the artwork. By appropriating old and valuable books, often intended for mass consumer consumption, Schneider creates something unique and personal for each viewer.

On this episode I spoke with Emerging Artist Award recipient, Kaashif Ghanie.  Kaashif Ghanie [he/him] is a mixed first generation Guyanese Canadian Muslim Ceramic and Visual Artist working in Kjipuktuk/Halifax in the Wonderneath Art Society KG Ceramics Studio with his partner, Kate Grey. Ghanie's art practice merges historical Islamic vessel shapes and motifs from his family members prayer rugs into a contemporary visual language. He graduated NSCAD University in fall 2015 with a bachelors degree in ceramics and a minor in art history.

Debora Medici-Guetta has inspired me since the day I met her. I could feel her intense passion for her work, her support of women, and for being someone not afraid to talk about her journey in life. So won't you please welcome her to our show this incredibly talented photographer & photojournalist, graphic artist, and documentary filmmaker. Debora was born in Rome, and the first time she landed in Los Angeles, she felt at home among other creatives free to express their art unfiltered. She now divides her time between here and Italy. Debora took time off, like many women, to focus on family. Her husband is famed artist #MrBrainwash, aka Thierry Guetta, and that alone is a full time job managing that level of notoriety. But a decade ago, Debora decided to get back into the game and began the intuitive process of reframing who she was, one image at a time. A return to making art meant embarking, in Debora's words, on “a big, long, introspective journey.” After several years refining her technique and honing her perspective, she would reveal a series of photographs aptly titled, “Out of The Shadow,” a haunting body of images that reflected Debora's desire to shed the trappings of the past and position herself as an artist in the world. She followed this exhibition with “Landed”, a series of collages that capture the frenetic and freeing energy of the world's great urban centers. As her vision grew, so did Debora's interests, so she started working with, and eventually joined, the board of directors for We Do It Together (WDIT), a nonprofit that produces films, documentaries, TV, and new media uniquely dedicated to the empowerment of women. Recently, for International Women's Day, the group launched “One of Us,” a documentary for which Debora served as honorary set photographer. The film, sponsored by Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles, follows four Italian women who are challenging gender bias and discrimination in their fields of work. We will talk with Debora about her incredibly successful career, and how she encourages women to discover who they are. She says her work “prioritizes emotions over mere moments,” and we'll talk with her about that, in addition to her life, and of course living with #MrBrainwash himself. Lots to ask there. Graham an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, sculpture, and vocal performance. Utilizing art-making methods rooted in traditional techniques, she studies the notion of “the ancestors” as a conceptual medium through which historical, interpersonal, and introspective insight might be gained.Her conceptual development originates from the veneration of her own lineage, an off-shoot of the African American spiritual tradition of ancestor worship. The work expands to encompass themes of generational love, collective human origin, our relationship to history, and our relationship to the future (the unknown). Working primarily in figuration and portraiture, she utilizes a level of precision in her representation. Her compositions are minimal; the subtlety of the substrate, or the intentional application of color intend for focus to be drawn to the subject. The subtlety of this approach is meant to provide a contemplative environment in which significance might be derived. These aesthetic philosophies of simplicity, stillness, and precision are applied to her performance work as well, which is rooted in her training as a classical vocalist. Here, the human voice is utilized as a kind of clarion. The haunting melodies are structured to slowly fill space and time, drawing viewers in so that they might share in what manifests from the collective experience of song.Mary was born in 2000 and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania amongst a family of artists. She attended California College of the Arts where she received her BFA in Individualized Studies in 2022. Her travels for arts and cultural exchange have taken her around the globe to Mexico, Japan, Kenya, South Africa, Peru, Morocco, Indonesia, and India.Graham has been exhibiting, collaborating and performing nationally since 2006. She was a commissioned artist for projects at Burning Man from 2019 through 2023, performed at the Institute of Contemporary Art + San Francisco in 2022, and in 2024, opened her first solo exhibition at Museum of the African Diaspora as part of their Emerging Artist's Program. Graham's work has been covered by CBS News, 48hills and the MoAD Journal.
