TO SYNC WITH MOVIE: Start this commentary 10 seconds after starting movie. In 1995, a terrifying vision of a possible dystopian future was unleashed into cinemas (or, more likely, a limited number of Blockbuster Video stores). In this impossible-to-imagine yet almost-frighteningly-real world, troublesome students who can't decide whether they want to be moody goths or lunkheaded stoners are banished to the Animal Room; where they are allowed to be total dicks to Neil Patrick Harris. Because that will rehabilitate them. Or something. Any way you look at it, Matthew Lillard is all up in NPH's grill. What makes this movie so special is the presence of a fresh-faced Gabriel Olds as NPH's only friend. This is important as Mr. Olds is a close personal friend of the Film Pigs and has joined this commentary for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this psychological thriller. Except that he can't remember much and mostly just eats snacks while we make fun of his hair. Don't be tardy to the party. NOTE: The Animal Room is currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly for those of you in the U.S. and possibly Canada.
Our first installment of Episode 17 goes gloriously awry in just about every way as Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester sit down with a checklist of topics to talk about, and proceed to discuss none of them. We do, however, talk about Netflix Watch Instantly, Zardoz, Iron Man 2, the new footage of Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern and--unfortunately for perhaps all involved--cartoonists "what are sexy" and cartoonists "what are not." It's as sexy as we're going to get until the day, somewhere far in the future, when Graeme agrees to breaks out his Tom Jones impression. We hope you enjoy it, and thanks for listening!
This week, we hit shuffle on Netflix Watch Instantly and land on the 1989 super-cheesefest 'Earth Girls Are Easy.' Yes, the extremely odd movie about sex-starved aliens inadvertently crash-landing their Oscar Wienermobile spaceship in an L.A. valley girl's pool. As one of us succinctly describes it, "What the crap is this??" Also...Which of us actually liked this movie (and why)? Are earth girls really that easy? What were Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayans Jim Carrey and their agents thinking? What is the Jeff Goldblum Look that constantly slays the ladies? Julie Brown or Downtown Julie Brown? Why does Krissy keep bringing up 'Schindler's List' every movie we watch? How do birth control pills really work? What should the (never happening) sequel be about and should James Cameron be involved? Tell ya friends! Tell ya wife! This episode is rated PG-13.
Just before he heads to the Summit City Comic Convention, Scott Carelli stops by to talk about Iron Man 2, among other topics of geeky interest. Mostly though, at least in this first half, it's about Iron Man 2. There will be SPOILERS in this discussion. You've been warned. 00:02:01 - John has purchased a Blue Snowball Microphone. The wedding is in June. :) 00:03:54 - Talk of Iron Man 2 starts here, beginning with Justin Theroux's script. 00:06:59 - Was this actually an Avengers prequel film? If not, should it have been? 00:12:07 - Apparently, creating your own brand new element to the periodic table, ain't no thing but a chicken wing. 00:16:57 - Do the bad guys have any solid motivations behind their actions? All signs point to "Not really". 00:20:26 - Demon In A Bottle? Kind of, sort of, just a little. 00:25:02 - We take it upon ourselves to rewrite a crucial section of the film. Did we make it better? We'll leave that for you to decide. 00:32:56 - Sam Rockwell is always fun to watch, but perhaps his Justin Hammer character needed a revision or two. 00:38:15 - Speaking of wasted potential, we discuss Scarlett Johansson's character (or lack there of), Natasha. 00:44:44 - John strongly recommends a new personal favorite horror film, Triangle, which is currently available on streaming video through Netflix Watch Instantly. 00:51:10 - Marvel Studios' upcoming film adaptations get some discussion, including Captain America and Thor. 00:56:45 - Due to Joss Whedon's involvment with The Avengers, we imagine the possibility of Nathan Fillion and Sarah Michelle Gellar making appearances in the film. This leads to thoughts about Gellar's recent work and the evolution of her career over the last five years. The following artists can be heard in this episode: Glee Cast with Jenna Ushkowitz & Kevin McHale, The New Amsterdams, Rogue Wave, The Antlers, Goldfrapp, AC/DC, Earlimart, Coldplay, The Little Ones, Radio 4, The Shout Out Louds, Christian Henson, Curve, Air and Third Eye Blind.
Part one of this two-part episode finds John and Scott ranting and raving about everything from geek culture, to obsessive behavior, to the joys of Netflix Streaming. 00:03:35 - John feels that Whedonesque is not being realized to its fullest potential, and worries that he's missing out on several news items, at the discretion of some questionable moderation. (UPDATE: The concerns of this issue have since died down considerably, making much of this rant more obsolete than before.) 00:24:11 - Yes, the rant was that long. This leads to another rant, one that's been discussed before. The Cult of Whedon, and how in some cases, the more overzealous contributors can ruin it for other fans. There is also more talk about the ups and downs of Dollhouse. 00:37:24 - Scott and John share their thoughts on Seasons 1 and 2 of Felicia Day's award-winning web series, The Guild. Spoilers abound, so beware. The idea of online gaming and the fantasy genre are also discussed. 00:50:57 - When writing creepy, stalker humor, how far is too far? 01:00:52 - Felicia Day has a Celebrity Music Playlist on Canadian iTunes, proving once again that Canada rocks! 01:04:24 - Scott checked out Big Fan through Netflix Watch Instantly. The Wrestler and Patton Oswalt's star power are also mentioned. 01:15:32 - Scott also watched the off-the-wall "comedy", Good Dick. 01:23:02 - Finally, Scott closes out the show by discussing the film, World's Greatest Dad. The following artists can be heard in this episode: Kevin Smith, Vampire Weekend, The Submarines, L7, Black Sabbath, Air, Cassettes Won't Listen, Stereophonics, Headlights, Joshua Radin, Paul Minor, David Guetta & Akon, Metric, The Smiths, Why?, FC Kahuna, Stars, U2, The Weepies, Hem, Belle & Sebastian, Grandaddy and Regina Spektor.
