Based on a listener's email, Jrad and Steed are talking all things night vision in this week's Chubstep. The guys start with the ‘Chubistory' of night vision in the military and it's ties to what was found in Osama bin Laden's compound and Ben Affleck before getting to the way too complicated ‘Steed Science', why Chappell Roan makes Steed regret his timing joining the military, dining in pitch black, and unrelated knitting at a Regina Spektor concert.

For this episode of LaunchLeft Podcast, Rain is joined by renowned producer and musician John Congleton, who shares his journey in the music industry and his collaboration with emerging artist Sarah Kinsley. They explore the creative process, the significance of authenticity in art, and the unique dynamics of producing music. John Congleton shares his early musical influences and the pivotal moments that led him to become a producer, reflecting on his upbringing in a musically rich environment and the profound impact of punk rock on his creative journey. John launches Sarah Kinsley who reflects on working with John on her latest album, “Escaper”, highlighting the collaborative nature of music production and the challenges of translating studio work to live performances. ----------------- LAUNCHLEFT OFFICIAL WEBSITEhttps://www.launchleft.com LAUNCHLEFT PATREON https://www.patreon.com/LaunchLeft TWITTER https://twitter.com/LaunchLeft INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/launchleft/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/LaunchLeft --------------------- In This Episode: [5:30] John Congleton's Early Music Journey [10:48] The Role of Artists and Creativity [16:43] Mentorship and Influence of Steve Albini [21:33] John launches Sarah Kinsley [27:06] Creating Music with Physical Instruments [33:07] The Impact of Technology on Music Creation [38:25] Social Media and Artistic Perception Key Takeaways: Everyone is inherently creative, akin to breathing. It's about recognizing and nurturing that creativity in everyday life. Congleton believes that creativity is as natural as breathing. Everyone possesses it, but often, people forget their innate artistic potential. Recognizing and nurturing this creativity can lead to personal fulfillment and innovation. Artists serve as conduits for expressing the human experience. They capture the essence of what it feels like to be alive at a particular moment in time, offering insights that go beyond mere information through all forms of art and expression. The digital age presents new challenges, such as the instant playback of music and the pervasive influence of social media. Artists must balance these tools with their creative instincts to maintain authenticity. Performing live offers a unique opportunity to connect with audiences in a shared, ephemeral experience. It allows artists to reinterpret their work and engage with listeners on a deeper level. From his astounding drum sounds to the aggressive guitar sounds he conjures, Congleton defines modern record production. Starting as a teenager in Dallas, Congleton studied and learned the craft of engineering from the ground up. While recording bands on the local scene he developed into an engineer of note. Soon he was being called to record projects as diverse as Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, all the while continuing to work with the local indie rock scene. Upon returning to Dallas, Congleton quickly established himself as the best producer in town. It was while working with the Polyphonic Spree he met Annie Clark, now better known as St. Vincent. Their partnership over six albums has won Grammy awards and been universally praised by critics as some of the most important music of our times. Now based in Los Angeles, Congleton continues to grow and flourish. In addition to the repeat business from long-time clients, he’s now established among the best of the best. Recent productions include Death Cab for Cutie, The Murder Capital, Tegan and Sara, Regina Spektor, Wallows, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten and many more.
Gordon Raphael is best known for producing Is This It and Room On Fire by The Strokes and Regina Spektor's ingenious Soviet Kitsch. He was born in New York, grew up in Seattle, and now lives in West Yorkshire, UK. From the age of 13, Gordon has been a keyboard player and later became obsessed with analog synthesizers, recording, and songwriting. His band Sky Cries Mary played a form of tribal space rock, with a 1960s-style multi-projector light show during the grunge scene in Seattle. This summer (2024) he released his 12th solo album, now streaming worldwide. Gordon's memoir, The World is Going To Love This (Up From The Basement With THE STROKES) was published in London by Wordville Press in 2022. Stories in his book include meeting Wendy Carlos and Dr. Robert Moog, detailed conversations from the recording sessions for Is This It, working with Ian Brown, Skin, The Libertines, Ian Astbury, and many others. Gordon has always taken a unique approach in his musical tastes as well as his production methods— which have kept him well outside of the traditional music industry! On today's episode, Scott interviews Tori Elliott, an American singer/songwriter/producer, and founder of her North Carolina indie pop band, Victoria Victoria. Tori's songwriting style has been compared to the likes of Regina Spektor and Carole King, and a number of her songs have been featured on reality tv shows and film. In addition to her own works, Tori has released a number of recordings with her writing partner, the legendary guitarist/producer, Charlie Hunter, including a new collaborative album, to drop in May 2024. Jazz and Beyond Intel said that Tori has a creative vision as a tunesmith, and Rolling Stone Magazine said her band, Victoria Victoria, is a rising act. Regina Spektor is one of the most critically-acclaimed and respected singer-songwriters of the past 25 years (she might just be your favorite artist's favorite artist). She's also one of the most thoughtful and open guests we've had on this show. Today, you'll learn how Regina went from medical receptionist writing lyrics on post-it notes to rising star in the NYC music scene; how she overcame her fear that record labels would meddle with her art; why “invisibility” has been her greatest creative asset; the songwriting process behind beloved songs like “Samson”; and her thoughts on finding fresh ideas while handling “adult” responsibilities and raising her two young children.Links from the show: “Samson” official music video“Fidelity” music videoHer Tiny Desk ConcertDan Smith of Bastille talking about Regina with GuyOrange is the New Black opening creditsHer new album: Home, Before and AfterListen to, or watch, all our episodes – including conversations with Tom Hanks, Jason Sudeikis, Bjork, and many more – at TheGreatCreators.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

NO LOOK is back and laser (beam) focused on the Sacramento Kings, the twin flame of the Toronto Raptors. Today, Blake Gillespie (@sacredhoopsbook) takes over History Check and gives a rhapsodic and poetic chronicle of the Kings, their playoff drought, and what it's like to be a fan of a sometimes flailing team. (Sound familiar, Raptors fans?????) Mascot check? A black-eyes-to-hell creature named Slamson the Lion who Sarah and Laura think would be into Regina Spektor's “Samson” tho. News check? All-Star weekend is a-comin' so Laura and Sarah give a Pitchfork (RIP) style rating and review of the East and West starters. Boyfriend check? Hooooooo boy, there's a Boston Celtic obsessed with Laura.
Jonathan is a French-Mauritian queer singer-songwriter/arranger/composer who writes alternative folk-pop music anchored by “smooth vocals and rich, warm instrumentations” (Buro 24/7 Singapore, July 2015) likened to Sufjan Stevens, Regina Spektor and Kings of Convenience. After a childhood and teenage years spent in Mauritius, he lived 15 years in Singapore where he released an album, an EP and a couple of singles, and took part in some of the country's foremost festivals. In 2018, Jonathan assumed the moniker Humble Humans and, in 2020, he released his first project as a composer, the instrumental EP Et Chaque Nuit (Each and Every Night) inspired by the eponymous award-winning animated short. In 2021, he released the four eclectic singles together with animated music videos. The EP “SOFT” came out on Record Store Day 2022 with alternative versions of the singles.Having recently become a quartet, Humble Humans is gearing up for its first full-band gig on January 14th, 2024, at Les Disquaires in Paris, and an exciting new album later in the year!Check out Humble Humans at Humble Humans | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok | LinktreeSupport the show

Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and pianist Regina Spektor is an indie-pop icon with two albums that debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. The Russian-born American musician tells David how difficult it was to leave behind her beloved childhood piano when her family immigrated to America, how she found her first piano teacher in the United States through a chance encounter between her father and a stranger on a train, and why she practiced on an imaginary piano. Regina reminisces about a trip to Israel when she was sixteen that sparked her career as a songwriter, reflects on a Carnegie Hall performance following her father's death, and reveals what she loves most about The Metropolitan Opera. To close it out, David and Regina compare notes about meeting celebrated soprano Renée Fleming!Check out Regina Spektor on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, or the web.Follow Speaking Soundly on Instagram.Follow David on Instagram. You can find out more about Artful Narratives Media on Instagram and the web.Photograph of Regina by Shervin Lainez. The Speaking Soundly theme song is composed by Joseph Saba/Stewart Winter and used by permission of Videohelper.Speaking Soundly was co-created by David Krauss and Jessica Handelman. Well obviously my name is Josh. Basically in a nutshell as it were I was a careered musician and was very successful in many capacities. I once owned a recording studio with Gordon Raphael (producer of the strokes & Regina Spektor) after getting my own record deal I worked on my debut album with Anthony Braun Perry and Scott Montoya (both from the band the growlers) and was well on my way. I have met and worked with many successful musicians and others in the entertainment business for years, and had built up quite a catalogue of gear and equipment along with a nice shiny resume. I had a house a supportive girlfriend who actually quit her job to work with me on my career full time because she believed in mine that much. I had custody of my autistic and diabetic son from a previous relationship. Life was good then I gave it all away for one small yet very big thing. That thing was so elusive and so deceitful. It was so romantic looking and yet so insidious. That thing was heroin. I've dabbled in drugs and alcohol for a long time and they sunk their teeth into my life long ago but I was always able to go dry for a while so I thought I had it under control. Through everything I've lost and all the problems I've gained it all changed October 1st, 2021. You see after a few jail stints and a prison sentence I basically just resigned myself to drugs and thought ok music is over so I'll become a full-fledged criminal. But this last year I got in trouble once again with the law and to my surprise instead of sending me back to prison they gave me probation and when I screwed that up I thought surely they'll send me back now but they didn't; they gave me a corrections based treatment program. When I left there I relapsed once again while living with my brother and ended up getting into a huge fight with him about who was the better addict. My brother had his own demons but in his mind he was ok because he was still living in his own place with a job and a car. So he kicked me out after the fight and that was the last I ever spoke to him. I feel very fortunate indeed but it came with a price and with consequences. Sadly my brother passed away from drugs a few months ago as did my ex girlfriend so those things and a few other things blessed me with the gift of desperation. But I'll tell you, through my brother's death I was able to be reborn. On September 31st, 2021 I was parked in a car I had borrowed from a friend while he was doing some time in jail and I tried to shoot myself in the head not long after I found out about my brother. However, before I could get the gun against my temple it randomly went off right before I got it in the place I wanted. So I had just done a bunch of heroin and from the adrenaline shock and the last bit of drugs; I fell asleep and woke up to cops knocking on the window of the car I was in. They found me with a gun, drugs and all sorts of other illegal things. They should have taken me back to jail then prison, as I'm already on probation. They were about to, when all of a sudden the police officer asked me what I was doing with the gun and I told him. That was October 1st, 2021. I relapsed in May 2022 and have been sober ever since. I go to meetings; reach out to people; and help wherever I can; and I work a 12 step program. I honestly wish I would have started a long time ago because it's the best thing I've ever done aside from having my son. So yeah! My recovery comes first as does my program. I surrendered myself to a higher power and realized my life was unmanageable and that I desperately needed and wanted a change. Now I'm learning to love myself again and I started some projects but I'm focusing on helping other bands again but I also help other addicts. My story could be so much longer but this is as I said in a nutshell! HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. DONATE HERE: https://bit.ly/Fightdrugs PART OF THE GOOD NEWS PODCAST NETWORK. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit nealkatyal.substack.comThis episode is like a matter-anti matter explosion. Regina Spektor is one of the deepest and most thoughtful humans on the planet, and one of the most talented musicians to boot. Her music can bring you to tears with its celebration of life and emotion. She and I discuss one of the lowest points for the Supreme Court in recent memory, Hawaii v. Trump, where the Supreme Court upheld Trump's severe restrictions on countries that were overwhelmingly Muslim. Paid subscribers on nealkatyal.substack.com will have access to the full written materials around the decision (including a short summary) along with some bonus material from the interview with Regina. On December 7, 2015 (note the date), candidate Donald Trump called for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” 5 days into his Administration, he implemented it, leading to mass protests at airports. That travel ban got struck down by the Courts. Trump created a new one. That one got struck down by courts. Trump created another one. And that third one is the one that went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision written by Chief Justice Roberts, upheld the third ban. Chief Justice Roberts found that the ban was constitutional, arguing that it neither exceeded the executive power of the Presidency nor violated the First Amendment. Justice Breyer issued a dissent examining the Proclamation's system of waivers and exemptions. In her more dissent, Justice Sotomayor rebuffed Roberts' argument, connecting then-candidate Trump's Islamophobic rhetoric to the ensuing travel ban and suggesting parallels to the Japanese internment cases. While the ban only lasted for four years, its impact was enormous; families were separated, dreams were crushed, and perhaps most disturbingly, the Court set a dangerous legal precedent. To me, as I wrote about in Yale Law Journal, it was a resurrection of the Korematsu case, where the Court upheld the Japanese American internment on grounds of national security. (Please keep in mind, I argued the Hawaii case in the Supreme Court and the lower courts, and have strong feelings, and some good stories I share here.). I have always felt the Supreme Court got Korematsu wrong, but part of the blame rests with the Solicitor General at the time, who lied to the Supreme Court.Regina, herself a refugee, is the perfect guest to discuss the human impact of a decision like Trump v Hawaii. I can't wait for you to listen in, for what she says about the promise of America is so moving.Paid subscribers will have access to all the written materials and summary of the decision, along with a bonus episode discussing Regina's tips for overcoming stage fright. Twenty years ago, Regina Spektor was yet another aspiring musician in New York, lugging around a backpack full of self-produced CDs and playing at little clubs in the East Village—anywhere that had a piano, basically. But anonymity didn't last long. She toured with the Strokes in 2003, and, once she had a record deal, her ambitions grew beyond indie music: she began writing pop-inflected anthems about love and heartbreak, loneliness and death, belief and doubt. Her 2006 album “Begin to Hope” went gold. “Home, Before and After” was released in 2022, six years after her previous studio album. To mark the occasion, Spektor sat down at a grand piano with Amanda Petrusich to play songs from the record and talk about the role of imagination in her songwriting and vocals. “I think that life pushes you—especially as an adult and especially when you're responsible for other little humans—to be present in this logistical sort of way,” she says. “I try as much as possible to integrate fun, because I love fun. And I love beauty. And I love magic. . . . I will not have anybody take that away.” Spektor performed “Loveology,” “Becoming All Alone,” and the older “Aprѐs Moi,” accompanying herself on piano. The podcast episode for this segment also features a bonus track, “Spacetime Fairytale.” This segment originally aired on June 10, 2022.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Gorgol Bordello over Zoom video!International punk band Gogol Bordello & friends, led by Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz, release a collaborative single for charity, “United Strike Back.” Out on Hütz's own label, Casa Gogol, the track features punk & hardcore heavy hitters like Tre Cool (Green Day), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Joe Lally (Fugazi, The Messthetics), Roger Miret (Agnostic Front), Monte Pittman (Ministry), Sasha (Kazka) and Puzzled Panther. Hütz shares “Here, living legends of punk and hardcore who always meant so much to me, come together to show their much needed support for Ukrainian freedom fighters.” The powerful punk anthem fights back against imperialism and dictatorship, with a unifying cry of “That's the way united people strike back. That's the way your palace crumbles, that's the way the house of cards tumbles, that's the way the dictator's story ends, as we stand with brothers, sisters, lovers and friends.”All proceeds will go to Kind Deeds to help wounded Ukrainian defenders regain mobility with prosthetics. The release precedes Gogol Bordello's EU & US Summer Tour (stopping at The Atlantis on August 5).The band recently performed for Rolling Stone, The Recording Academy's Global Spin and WNYC's Soundcheck, with Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz continuing to be a “flagbearer of the cultural resistance…as the one-year mark of the war in Ukraine approaches” (CBC Radio's The Sunday Magazine).ABOUT GOGOL BORDELLOSince 1999, International punk band Gogol Bordello, led by Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz, has been filling up rooms with an energy that could run a whole city. Their latest album Solidaritine is no exception, going back to their hardcore roots: "With a Fugazi cover, Social Distortion references, and an appearance from H.R. of Bad Brains, Gogol Bordello's mission is well-studied and seemingly endorsed by icons of the genre," Consequence declares. The band has lit up stages around the world alongside System of a Down, Primus, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, dueted with Regina Spektor, and cut albums with legends Rick Rubin and Steve Albini. Russia's war in Ukraine is personal for Eugene & the band, who have been tirelessly advocating for Ukrainian solidarity, partnering with Nova Ukraine, ArtDopomoga, and putting together benefits with Patti Smith, The Hold Steady, Suzanne Vega, Magnetic Fields, Matisyahu and more.
