For our landmark 150th episode, we bring you an episode that made Brett so giddy that he nearly piddled.  That's right, folks, our Third Lad this week is none other than Phil Wilson from seminal UK indie pop band The June Brides.   During their initial run from 1983 - 1986, The June Brides released some of the most beloved singles of the era and the chart-topping album There Are Eight Million Stories... Originally under the spell of Postcard bands like Orange Juice and Josef K, the Brides' unique blend of guitar pop with viola and trumpet has in turn been wildly influential from C86 to Britpop and beyond.  High profile fans like Morrissey, Manic Street Preachers, and Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch have acknowledged The June Brides' impact.  Following the band's breakup, Phil recorded material for Creation and Caff before leaving the music business behind in the late '80s.   In the 21st century, The June Brides have returned for live gigs and recordings.  Phil also released an acclaimed solo album for Slumberland in 2010, God Bless Jim Kennedy, as well as self releasing collections of home recordings. This month we're back to the year Colin's most excited about as we talk about our favourite songs of 1996, Including the best songs to receive a concussive head injury to, Songs to listen to at Ians house at 3am and subsequently fail your IT A-Level, & bands Colin apparently recommended to Tracey but has no recollection of..We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. It's time to get twee! Belle & Sebastian exploded across college dorm rooms in the late '90s but they were not the only Scottish indie pop band making waves, facing competition from upstarts Camera Obscura. So who is the favorite Scottish indie pop song of 2006, Camera Obscura's "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" or Belle and Sebastian's "Another Sunny Day"?

One of my favorite insights from Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch in episode #75: “Maybe 1994 or 1995, a switch came on, and I started writing better songs. There's no doubt about that. I remember writing a song called ‘Dog on Wheels' at the start of 1995, and then quickly after that, I wrote a song called ‘The State I Am In,' a song called ‘Lord Anthony,' ‘Sleep The Clock Around,' and it suddenly started flowing. There was a moment when I been in my favorite cafe, which I practically lived in — the Grosvenor Cafe — and I started getting the idea for ‘The State I Am In.' I had a little tune and I took it outside because it was too noisy in the cafe, and the words started to flow. It started coming easily, riding on top of the tune. And I didn't have to ponder the words. And actually I kind of didn't know where the ideas were coming from, I didn't know what I was saying — it all tumbled out.” Belle & Sebastian's awesome new album, A Bit Of Previous, is out now. SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE FEATURED SONG: REC – “The Garden” (from Sympathy for the Weird) Everything is part of a cycle. Macro, Micro, Nano, Epochal. Even if it seems something is brand new never-been-done, guaranteed it's an echo of something else. That's partly because nothing is created in a vacuum. New works – even ones so bracingly new they blow your head back – are always influenced by old. Every attention-grabbing shift & movement is a response to something that came before. Complex gives way to simple. So-called “high art” gives way to so-called “low art” (distinctions I always dispute but which are useful here). Brash & confrontational gives way to soft & inviting. Sarcasm & nihilism give way to sincerity & faith. And while each iteration of the cycle is different and almost always a step forward, we're wise to look back for perspective & context, so we can better understand what's being done & why. It makes the seemingly unfamiliar & possibly offensive feel closer to our experience & thus more inviting. You can trace the cycle of influence & response back to the first time a humanoid repeatedly hit an object with a bone, or made a sound that was useful to make again & again. Let's not do that here. That's what I'd call the “$50,000 version” of this podcast. A quicker illustration goes like this: PUNK – a stripped down response to the complexity & bombast of progressive & classic rock HAIR METAL – a melding of punk, metal & glam intended to poke a hole in the straight-edged seriousness of punk GRUNGE – a stripped down, beefed up and more personal & inclusive response to the excesses & overt misogyny of hair metal TWEE INDIE POP & POST ROCK – a quiet, seemingly more contemplative & less guitar driven response to the moshfest of grunge Now, all of this is simplified & very qualified. These kinds of music existed for more reasons than just as responses to what came before, whether socio-political or purely artistic. And their influences were more far-ranging than just “we don't want to do what they did”. Punk was in many ways a return to the 3- & 4-chord 1950s pop rock AND the 1960s garage rock movement. Hair metal was, as stated, a descendant of glam, but also very blues based, unlike the more classical/progressive based metal of earlier bands. Grunge took a lot from the 1970s – including the relatively flat, midrange EQ. And the grunge counter-response that included twee & post-rock consisted of strains that had been around as long as grunge, and influences that had been around even longer. And this is where this week's band comes in. Belle & Sebastian are a 1960s AND 1980s influenced indie pop band from Glasgow. They were carrying on traditions set forth by bands like The Zombies AND The Smiths. Their lyrics are often literary & intellectual – very college-y, and also often very personal. You could say that about quite a bit of grunge lyrics too, but that's not what grunge was ever known for. When you listen to twee indie pop & grunge back to back, it's like the aural difference between inviting you into a basement of cloistered suffering or a living room of barely tolerable ennui. Both speak of personal struggle, but in very different ways. Where grunge went out of its way to shock and slam you, twee music tried to be as quiet & unassuming as possible. Glasgow's finest, Belle & Sebastian, are back with their first full length album since 1999. “A Bit Of Previous” was produced and recorded by the seven-piece band during the pandemic, clocking in every morning, writing together, and trying new things. This month we're all meeting up in the year 2000 to hang out in the Millenium dome, play Timesplitters on the PS2, & try to avoid getting sued by Metallica for downloading Master Of Puppets on Napster. We'll also be talking about wind instruments fashioned from root vegetables, uttery brilliant but thoroughly depressing movies, & we speculate whether Thom Yorke was turning up at every recording studio in the world in 2000.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine.Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.
