Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt joins Sam to catch up where they left off during the first Trump administration and how they simply can't believe we're doing round two of this shit. They discuss how there's money in outrage and how it drives engagement, and how news channels take advantage of your cortisol levels to keep you engaged with constant alerts of BREAKING NEWS. Patton explains why he no longer interacts with people on X but still can't leave his followers behind, and why they both now mostly use social media to self-soothe, while others are left to raw-dog their boredom. They talk about the need for young nerds to go into politics and what Trump would be doing if Sam was still on TV. A girl can dream! Check out Patton's new special, Black Coffee and Ice Water, available on Audible. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. We suck at tributes, but we tried multiple times to honor the many celebrities who have died in the last 24 hours. Dolly Parton's idol growing up was the town tramp, grew up so poor her dad had to pay the doctor in cornmeal when she was born, and she once said 'I'm comfortable in my own skin no matter how far I've stretched it." Now that's a woman! RIP to the best to ever do it. Later in the show we found out that Tim Curry died at 80 years old, which makes it one of the worst days ever for the gays. Who's next, Ru Paul!? Ally has a 'Hall Pass' this weekend to sleep with any celebrity on the A-C list, which prompted Klein to challenge listeners to present us with the biggest celebrity they know. Now Ally could be sleeping with Patton Oswalt, The Black Power Ranger, or Dewey's stunt double from Malcolm in the Middle. Her wife was on the line approving/nixing every pitch. We also went deeper into Jake's love life (gross), and discovered Jake has already asked the girl he's dating to be his girlfriend. We explicitly told him NOT to do this, but of course he didn't listen and the interaction was awkward to say the least (she didn't say yes.)

This week we're excited to present a conversation from Opening Night of Scary Movies, the popular horror festival that just concluded its spooky 14th edition, with Buddy director Casper Kelly, producers Rafi Margules & Tyler Davidson, and lead actress Delaney Quinn, moderated by FLC programmer Madeline Whittle. Buddy will be opening in select theaters beginning August 28th, courtesy of Roadside Attractions. Viewers might know Casper Kelly as the mad-genius Adult Swim auteur responsible for 2014's viral sensation Too Many Cooks, among other fever-dream spoofs of vintage pop-culture weirdness. With his first foray into big-screen feature filmmaking, Kelly embraces a larger canvas, applying his gleefully deranged sense of humor to the uncanny, oppressive cheerfulness of a '90s soundstage-set kids' TV show. The plucky young live-action characters of “It's Buddy!” pass their days (or rather, episodes) laughing and learning in a brightly-hued analog playhouse—until the titular host, a charismatic orange unicorn, turns unexpectedly violent, and the show's hermetically sealed fantasyland descends into gore-spattered mayhem. The result is an unhinged satire in which Kelly's trademark flair for surreal black comedy reaches dazzling new heights, here abetted by a pitch-perfect ensemble cast that includes Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace, and the voice-acting talents of Keegan Michael Key and Patton Oswalt. Now please enjoy the conversation with Buddy director Casper Kelly, producers Rafi Margules & Tyler Davidson, and lead actress Delaney Quinn, moderated by FLC programmer Madeline Whittle. Jim Hill returns from the D23 Expo with a firsthand look at Marvel's latest reveals, while Dan Graney digs into a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer that appears to answer several theories from Episode 23. They break down Doctor Doom's motivations, Marvel's newly revealed X-Men cast, Vision Quest, and the latest trailer for Ahsoka Season 2. Then the conversation turns to a crossover that once sounded like a Patton Oswalt punchline but is now real: Marvel and Star Wars are officially colliding in the five-issue Hope Assembles comic series. HIGHLIGHTS • The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer offers fresh clues about Victor Von Doom, his lost family, and his plans for the multiverse. • Jim reports from D23 on Marvel's TVA-style experience, Doom's throne room, and a detailed blueprint of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. • Marvel reveals a new X-Men cast including Sadie Sink, Kit Connor, Christopher Abbott, Samara Weaving, Indy Navarrette, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. • Vision Quest brings White Vision face-to-face with manifestations of familiar MCU artificial intelligences, including JARVIS and Ultron. • Ahsoka Season 2 sets up Thrawn's war, Ahsoka's continuing questions about her Jedi identity, and new mysteries involving Baylan Skoll and the Mortis mythology. • Marvel and Star Wars collide in Hope Assembles, a five-issue comic series written by Kevin Smith with art by David Marquez. • Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewbacca cross into Marvel's Earth-616, where heroes including Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Widow, and Hulk enter the fight. • Doctor Doom and Marvel villains join forces with Darth Vader and the Empire in a crossover that makes Patton Oswalt's legendary Parks and Recreation filibuster feel strangely prophetic. In this episode of the Travis Makes Money Podcast, Travis and producer Eric explore the relationship between luck, competence, humility, and success through lessons from Conan O'Brien, Danny McBride, and Patton Oswalt. They discuss why successful people can be tempted to take too much credit for their wins, how ego can prevent people from reinventing themselves, and why staying grounded while continuing to develop your skills is one of the best ways to build a lasting career. On this episode we talk about: Why successful people should acknowledge the role luck plays in their accomplishments How to balance humility about your circumstances with confidence in your own competence Why ego can prevent entrepreneurs from taking risks, trying new things, or reinventing themselves The importance of continuing to create, develop your skills, and focus on work you genuinely enjoy How staying grounded and maintaining a sense of play can lead to more opportunities and long-term success Top 3 Takeaways Success is a combination of competence and luck. Skills, knowledge, relationships, timing, and hard work all matter, but luck is part of the equation too. Recognizing that doesn't diminish your accomplishments—it can help keep your ego in check. Don't let your ego take you out of the game. Whether it's avoiding a game because you might lose or refusing to pursue a new career path because you might not immediately be great at it, protecting your ego can prevent you from doing things you actually enjoy and discovering new opportunities. Focus on the work, not just the outcome. The people who continue to succeed are often those who stay focused on creating things they care about rather than becoming obsessed with how others perceive their careers. Building a body of work and continuing to improve gives you something you can control regardless of whether the next big break arrives. Notable Quotes "Successful people commit first, and then they figure it out." "It's not all luck. It's not a hundred percent luck." "Why take myself out of the game just because it's a challenge to my own ego?" They both enjoyed the Travis Knight-directed film more than the 1987 film (even though they liked Dolph's cameo!) and would be happy to watch a sequel if it can overcome its lacklustre box office earnings. They had some misgivings about the overabundance of jokey dialogue but the action, music and special effects kept them amused.Rastislav follows with his greater pick, the 2022-2025 Netflix series The Recruit; he enjoyed this story of a CIA lawyer dealing with attempts to expose classified information and being thrown in at the deep end. He praises stars Noah Centineo and Vondie Curtis-Hall, noting that Centineo has progressed from his earlier, youth-oriented projects. He also enjoyed that it felt less like a conventional spy thriller and more like a chaotic legal drama/comedy.Moving on to lesser picks, Ken gives his still-favourable view on another 80s reboot, specifically 2025's Canadian production Deathstalker. Starring Daniel Bernhardt and Patton Oswalt, it has a much lower budget than MOTU but that is part of its video store era charm. There isn't as much female nudity as in earlier genre efforts, which may disappoint aficionados; the practical effects-driven approach makes it worth a watch nonetheless.Stewart's lesser pick is M3GAN 2.0; he was not amused by its hard left babyface turn, making M3GAN into a Terminator-like hero fighting a government conspiracy and internet memes. He calls it an AI slopfest and says “AV01D!”Rastislav's lesser but still worthwhile pick is the 2018-2020 AT&T series Condor starring Max Irons, Leem Lubany and the late William Hurt. It is an update of the classic Robert Redford thriller Three Days of the Condor. He felt that the current state of surveillance technology is well-suited for a modern retelling. He also enjoyed Irons and Lubany as substitutes for the adversaries originally played by Redford and Max von Sydow.Stewart ends this edition with a dishonourable mention for 2025's Nuremberg; he suggests watching the original Judgment of Nuremberg instead as he questions the accuracy of this version. More picks to come as summer rolls on! This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit unsungcinematics.substack.com

This week on Fantastic Forum, we are diving into animated paranoia and Marvel mayhem with two highly anticipated new releases. First up is Among Us on Paramount Plus, the animated adaptation of the hit social deduction game. Featuring a voice cast that includes Randall Park, Ashley Johnson, Yvette Nicole Brown, Elijah Wood, Dan Stevens, and Patton Oswalt, the series follows a crew trapped aboard a spaceship where one of them is not what they seem. Blending comedy, mystery, and plenty of paranoia, the show expands the world of the game while keeping the tension and betrayals that made it a phenomenon. We are breaking down the cast, the humor, and whether the series successfully translates the experience of the game to television. Then we turn to Jay & Silent Bob: Jays of Future Past #1, written by Kevin Smith with interior art by Giuseppe Camuncoli. After decades of references to Marvel throughout the View Askewniverse, Jay and Silent Bob finally make their way into the Marvel Universe itself. When Doctor Doom decides that the dim-witted duo must die, the Fantastic Four, Avengers, X-Men, and a host of Marvel heroes are drawn into a chaotic adventure to save them from a lethal case of superhero overload. Packed with Marvel history, Kevin Smith humor, and plenty of surprises for longtime fans, this crossover is a love letter to both the View Askewniverse and the Marvel Universe. Absolute Dominion (2025)

Boys' Bible Study

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 14, 2026 73:21

This Christian-leaning film directed by a martial arts expert preaches a confusing mix of liberal pro-science atheism and Christian deism that would be way more interesting if the fight scenes weren't such a slog. It's too bad because ABSOLUTE DOMINION has so much good going for it. Director Lexi Alexander has a genuinely interesting career and an obvious expertise and passion for combat sports. Her most notable film is possibly PUNISHER: WAR ZONE (2008), a commercial failure at the time that has since become a cult classic. She was notable for being the first female director of a Marvel franchise film, but the gritty and hyper-violent take on PUNISHER didn't land well with critics or audiences. Alexander had some famous defenders though -- comedian Patton Oswalt has repeatedly gone on record praising the film. It's probably not a coincidence that he and fellow celebrity fan Alex Winter both appear in ABSOLUTE DOMINION in supporting roles. We hypothesize that both jumped at the chance to support a new Lexi Alexander project with an interesting script. In ABSOLUTE DOMINION, Oswalt plays a fictional influencer/streamer named Fix Huntley who goes viral in the year 2085 AD pitching the idea for a worldwide martial arts tournament where the major world religions each send a champion to fight for religious dominance. In the war-torn dystopian future of 2085, society jumps at the chance for a civil Mortal Kombat-style tournament instead of scattered warfare and bloodshed. The three major world religions, Celestians, Pentotities, and Dashafaris, all send champions, but a last-minute rogue entry named Sagan Bruno steals the show. Sagan represents the Institute for Humanism in Science -- a perfect fighter born of a eugenics project, to a scientist mother and athlete father, neither of which have a relationship with him. Bruno quickly jumps to the top of the competition, but his worldview is rocked when blessings from a supernatural force begin to guide his combat. Could this force be none other than capital "G" God? Or is it just a miracle of logic and reason? It's too bad ABSOLUTE DOMINION couldn't stick the landing because it is undoubtedly a breath of fresh air in a sea of Christian movies with the exact same stereotypical evangelical perspective. On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Zack Kaplan to talk about two ambitious new projects that tap into some of today's biggest anxieties. First up is Only the Savage Are Left, Kaplan's new post-apocalyptic series with Stefano Raffaele, which imagines a world overrun by a virus that transforms people into monsters. During the conversation, Kaplan digs into the moral dilemmas at the heart of the series, the challenge of creating a new kind of monster apocalypse, and why the story's central romance is just as important as its horror. We also discuss The Smart Division, his upcoming AI-driven crime thriller with John Pearson, exploring how rapidly advancing technology, generational divides, and questions about institutional trust shaped the book's premise. What was the starting point for the virus concept, and how did you land on the idea that the “cure” is tied to killing another infected person? There's an early suggestion in the book that civilization didn't collapse because people failed to work together, but because they turned on each other. How much of this story is meant to reflect real-world anxieties about how fragile social order really is? You've described the idea that “civilized society is a failed experiment.” How does that philosophy shape Ryder's journey, especially as someone who begins the story outside that cycle of violence? Ryder starts off relatively sheltered, living behind a wall and seemingly untouched by the infection. What interested you about telling a story through a character who hasn't yet been forced to compromise his morality? The relationship that pulls Ryder out into the world feels central to the emotional core of the book. How did you approach balancing that love story with the brutality of the setting? Without spoiling too much, how does the virus actually work on a thematic level? Is it purely biological, or is it also meant to represent something more psychological or societal? As Ryder encounters other survivors and “monster-killers,” how do you approach defining who the real monsters are in this world? Shifting to The Smart Division, the idea of an AI being involved in a “perfect murder” is chillingly plausible. What kind of real-world advancements in AI or predictive tech inspired this story? The pairing of a Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent feels like a classic odd-couple dynamic. What makes that contrast especially interesting in a story about artificial intelligence and crime? Fun one: if you had to survive in the world of Only the Savage Are Left, what's your strategy in the first 24 hours… and are you making it out alive?
