Episode 205!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Minor Threats Volume 1: A Quick End To A Long Beginning"! A new original comic series from Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum - showrunners of Marvel's M.O.D.O.K on Hulu - and superstar artist Scott Hepburn! In the vein of Sin City, Watchmen, and The Boys, this noir-ish superhero caper, focuses on a lower-class kind of criminal, similar to the Coen Bros' most pulpy films, but set in a high concept world of heroes and villains. It's hard out there for a supervillain. Not the world conquerors, chaos engines, or arch-nemeses, but the little guys, the career criminals. The ones who put on uniforms, knock over jewelry stores, and get tied to telephone poles before the hero swings off to face the actual big bad. Times are tough for costumed crooks…and they're about to get much worse. The psychotic Stickman has done the unthinkable and murdered Kid Dusk, sidekick to Twilight City's premier crime-fighter, The Insomniac. The Insomniac's teammates, The Continuum, are tearing Twilight apart, turning it into a terrifying police state—desperate to capture the Stickman and stop the Insomniac from “crossing that final line” in which he may never come back from. Caught in the middle are the small-time C-list villains, finding it impossible to pull jobs or even walk down the street without being harassed by these heroes. With a bounty on the Stickman's head, former villain Playtime decides to put together a ragtag team of equally disgruntled supervillains to take down the Stickman and kill him themselves, leading her on a dark journey into the criminal underbelly she's tried so hard to escape. This graphic crime drama is about superheroes and villains and the last gasp of the colorful, innocent days of the silver and bronze age...before they're dragged into the grit-soaked modern era. Think of your worst experience with online dating – the most excruciating Hinge disaster or Tinder catastrophe. However bad you might think that ordeal was, it's nothing on the tale told in the extraordinary recent indie I Love My Dad. Part cringe comedy, part family drama and part horror movie for the MySpace generation, the film followed a screw-up father who's desperate to reconnect with the child he pushed away. Blocked on social media, this father – Chuck, played by Patton Oswalt – resorts to posing online as a beautiful young waitress whose friend request his estranged son will surely accept. The scheme is soon complicated, however, when the teenager begins to fall for this stranger in his DMs, growing determined to meet her in person. That premise – a teenager cat-fished by his own father – might sound like the logline for a zany, high-concept Hollywood romp, but what's so special about I Love My Dad is how grounded it is in the loneliness of being a certain age and desperate for connection. The lure of the internet, the versions of ourselves we present online and the sometimes unhealthy fantasies that permits – these questions are all explored in the film by the film's outrageously talented writer, director and star, James Morosini, who it was a delight to chat with for this week's episode. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, James explains how I Love My Dad has such an air of emotional truth to it because, well, “this actually happened” to quote the film itself. There are ways in which James' story deviates from the one in the film but yes – his father really did cat-fish him in real-life, in events that inspired his screenplay. We discuss Age, Sex, Location – the title of James' first draft of the film – and why an early ending in which Chuck has a heart attack and Franklin gets together with the real-life Becca had to go. It's a fascinating conversation about the inherent performance of social media – how we're all cat-fishing one another to less explicit degrees – and why running towards our most embarrassing moments and most vulnerable parts of ourselves, rather than running away, makes for great storytelling.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. The Kinks are one of the great rock bands of the 20th century and, like all artists, they reflect the times and places they've inhabited. In this episode, we speak with Mark Doyle about his excellent book The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached (Reaktion Books, 2020) and how the band, their origins, and Ray Davies' lyrics reveal a lot about both the real and imagined spaces of mid-20th Century England. Dr. Mark Doyle is Professor of History at Middle Tennessee State University, where he specializes in the history of the British Empire. His research and teaching have won him numerous awards including the Stansky Book Prize (co-winner, 2017) and MTSU's Outstanding Teacher Award (2014-15). Ben once described him as “the Patton Oswalt of academic twitter,” so we recommend you follow him there at @DrMarkDoyle. We're excited to announce that Ben & Bob will be recording a live episode of RTN on the history of Americana music in Nashville on September 18, 2023 w/ guests Emmy Lou Harris, Rodney Crowell and Jefferson Cowie! Click here for tickets. Hope to see you there! This is a rebroadcast of the Road to Now #169, which originally aired on April 27, 2020. This version was fully re-cut and edited by Ben Sawyer.

It's time for a very special True Crime Roundup this week as the boys are joined IN STUDIO by actor, comedian, and author Patton Oswalt to break down a handful of disturbing stories and to discuss Patton's new Dark Horse graphic novel series "Minor Threats" (available everywhere now).
With the trade paperback of Minor Threats: A QUICK END TO A LONG BEGINNING hitting shelves today, it's a great time to listen to co-creators Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, and Scott Hepburn dig into the series. Minor Threatologists Quinn and Dan sit down with the team to really do a deep dive into the first volume of the series and the world blooming from it. You can pick the book up now anywhere you buy your comics! We also spend a LOT of time talking about Shit Eater. Just like a lot of time spent on one weird background character called Shit Eater. I hope you are ready for all the shit-talking you can handle. Minor Threats is a series that focuses on crooks and criminals in a superhero world. But we aren't talking about the A-Tier villains like your Jokers and Green Goblins. We focus on those C-listers who get an issue or two before the hero foils their plot. The series focuses on those types of characters to flesh out what that world looks like. How do you function in a world where the villains above you are gods and monsters when you simply have cool toys? Patton, Jordan, and Scott talk about the construction of their world on iconography that are familiar and distinct but with their own unique flavor brought to the page. We talk with the team to break down some of the most iconic pages from the series and what went into their construction. Scott gets the chance to break down the flow of his art in the series. We discuss the visualization of powers. Minor Threats often walks the line of humor and trauma in the series, a topic Patton and Jordan unpack with certain characters in the series. Stick around to the very end for a spoiler-filled discussion about the end of the series and what it means moving forward for the Minor Threats universe.

The writers of Minor Threats return to the show this week to talk about their new trade paperback for the series, their new spinoff The Alternates, big influences, world building, noir, and a whole lot more!
Multiversal success and failure. Success? Star Trek TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror," and the 2017 Starz series, "Counterpart." Failure? It pains Driftglass to say it, but Robert Heinlein's "The Number of the Beast" is well-known as a massive fail in the multiverse and just plain science fiction novel genre. (The Heinlein novel has some sexual situations that are discussed in this episode.) And you can hear Patton Oswalt's magnificent Parks and Rec filibuster concerning "multiverses" here.
