Join Alex and guest host Dr. Shlomit Flaisher-Grinberg as they discuss the neuroscience behind Pixar's brilliant Ratatouille (2007), directed by Brad Bird and starring the voices of Patton Oswalt as Remy, Ian Holm as Skinner, Brad Garrett as Gusteau, Janeane Garofalo as Colette, Lou Romano as Linguini, and Peter O'Toole as Anton Ego. This lovely movie about following your dreams has a ton of psychological concepts hidden within, from the sensation and perception of food, how Remy controls Linguini, and how Rats just get a bad rap. Shlomit shares her experiences working with rats as a graduate student, postdoc, and university professor — perhaps she wouldn't want them in her kitchen, though (she says yes but backs off a bit!). It was a fun sized show this week as Mark and Hannah welcomed the queen of Alternative Comedy Beth Lapides and powerhouse singer/songwriter Savannah Pope to the lighter side of the dark side. Beth just celebrated the 25th Anniversary of her show Uncabaret with a star studded show featuring Bob Odenkirk, Sandra Bernhard, Patton Oswalt, Maria Bamford and more. She recounted insisting that Scott Thompson of Kids in the Hall not perform in drag, how Julia Sweeney now regrets her hit character Pat from SNL, how she felt when she saw her comedy nemesis Andrew Dice Clay in A Star Is Born and she had to remind Mark that the Marvelous Mrs Maisel was a fantasy. She also talked about The Rockwell in Los Feliz which is where Uncabaret is now on a monthly basis. Savannah talked about growing up with show business parents (who apparently had jokes about editors) her music video Creature which was chosen as one of the top 20 videos of 2018 by Yahoo, directing her latest video Rock and Roll No More while laying in a coffin in the rain and sang a new song Freeway live in studio Get some Dark Mark Show gear Go to www.teepublic.com/user/dms1 for shirts, mugs, phone/laptop covers, masks and more! There has been a lot of talk around Sinners. Good, bad, or ugly, everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Is it really the best movie of the young year? Is it grossly overrated? Something else entirely? Whatever the case, audiences are going out to see it in drovers. What is being overlooked by many is the biggest irony surrounding it.We spend a lot of time talking lovingly of the theater experience. It was a big part of growing up and still remains fun even as adults. So it sucks to hear when the CEO of Netflix says theaters are outdated. It is not so much his opinion that matters, but the fact that he actually has the power to make movie theaters obsolete.Which makes it all the better when someone like Rian Johnson talks about how he wants Knives Out 3 in as many movie theaters as possible for as long as it can. Since he has a deal with Netflix, we all know where the movie will eventually end up. The fact that he wants a run that is longer than a week or two is nice to hear. The detective noir is a genre that does not get the love it used to. A part of this may be due to burnout. The 1930s - 1950s saw a huge number of them released. Many of them are considered classics. There has not been a good one in quite a while so when one bills itself as a triumphant return, we were all in.Exaggeration is a part of marketing. We get that. But Dark My Light has no film noir elements, at all. There are exactly zero moments. Instead, it is a science fiction movie that wants to be about a character. The question is not why did they market as something it is not. It is not even whether what they ended up doing worked. The real question is did this movie even have a script?Karate tournament movies were all the rage back in the day. Jean-Claude Van Damme was able to build a career off of them while the legacy of The Karate Kid still lives on. We could not wait to see Absolute Dominion. Sure, the idea may be the flimsiest excuse ever to have a globe spanning battle for supremacy, but nostalgia is a powerful draw.Regrettably, Absolute Dominion lacks any of the charm of the movies from our childhood. It is way more confusing than it has to be, ignores its most interesting subplot, and lacks any of the tension these types of films need. We also try to figure out who Alex Winter owes money to. John Moe joins us as we start recording and releasing new episodes in 2025 after an extended break over the winter. Maybe we are rusty, but we really take the whole "don't want to know you ahead of time" thing to an extreme with John, which he handles well. John Moe is a Twin Cities-based podcast maker, author, public speaker, and mental health advocate. He created and currently hosts the podcasts Depresh Mode with John Moe (LA Press Club Award) and Sleeping with Celebrities on the Maximum Fun network and he has created and produced podcasts for clients including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the American Psychiatric Association, Whitman College (two higher ed marketing awards), and University of Puget Sound. Moe has hosted three national public radio programs, Wits, Marketplace Tech, and Weekend America, and he created and hosted the groundbreaking podcast, The Hilarious World of Depression (Webby Award). His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times Magazine and McSweeney's. He is the author of four books, including the WSJ bestseller, The Hilarious World of Depression. Moe has delivered speeches on mental health all over the country. The Hilarious World of Depression was launched in late 2016 and was an instant success, quickly reaching the number two spot on the Apple Podcasts chart, garnering millions of downloads, and receiving widespread press coverage. It was based on the idea that depression is a lot more common than people realize, especially among celebrities and entertainers like comedians and musicians, and that open conversations on this often taboo topic could be a healing experience. The show won the Webby Award for Best Comedy Podcast in 2017 and led to a critically-acclaimed bestselling book of the same name in 2020.Our Whitman, My Story was conceived in collaboration with the communications staff at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. The small school had a challenge: how to attract applicants from around the world and how to get admitted students to actually enroll. The unhosted podcast series featured profiles of a diverse group of students, the kind of people who could be friends once a student arrived on campus. The podcast, which was renewed for a second season, won the CASE Circle of Excellence Award and the Educational Advertising Award. The success of the Whitman series led to another podcast at the University of Puget Sound featuring students, faculty, and alums as part of the school's capital campaign. Depresh Mode with John Moe is a mental health interview podcast program produced in conjunction with Maximum Fun, an employee-owned co-op podcast network. Drawing on his extensive connections in the entertainment industry, John Moe has interviewed celebrities such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Patton Oswalt, and David Sedaris and won an...

This interview kicks off with absolute chaos and doesn't slow down until the credits roll. Brian Michael "B-Money" Bendis and Soo Lee join Dan to talk about WELCOME TO TWILIGHT Issue #2. This is their first installment in the Minor Threats Universe! We dig into their issue, their new characters, and so much more in our extremely fun chat. Oh also, Bendis talks about the time he signed a living breathing dog, but he had NOTHING to do with the CGC grading! WELCOME TO TWILIGHT is the first anthology series from the world of Minor Threats that lines up absolute superstar teams to tell stories set through the Minor Threats Universe. In Issue 2, A brand-new character so dangerous she was never spoken of until now. Find out her connections to the past and how they're gonna affect the future of the city. Co-created by the creator of the Peabody-winning Jessica Jones and the Bram Stoker (Not Stroker, that's a very different and much sexier award show which we talk about) award-winning co-creator of Carmilla, Soo Lee! Soo Lee talks about the design of the new character Dokkaebi with her own heritage and anime influences. As someone who is an expert on the Minor Threats universe, she is my favorite addition since Crab Louie. She fits so well, and I cannot wait to see where she goes from this absolutely STELLAR introduction WELCOME TO TWILIGHT. Bendis discusses his return not only to writing cape comics but also to writing comics in a shared space like this. He discusses how inspiring the duo of Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum is as someone who loves collaborating with people. We all spend a lot of time gushing over Minor Threats, and I am not sorry about it. If you aren't reading the Minor Threats line... You're missing out on the absolute ultimate thing in comics.

We are no strangers to the Minor Threats universe that Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Scott Hepburn created. We've spoken to them a few times about the world, but now we are chatting with the creator of the newest spinoff, The Brood. Heath Corson, I.N.J. Culbard, and Nate Piekos bring a tale of fatherhood, legacy, and connection to a cape setting with the utmost vulnerability in its storytelling. Listen as Heath and Dan discuss the book's themes, sandwiches, and more. We were lucky enough to read the final issue of the series, which ties everything together in one of the best conclusions in a comic. It is a testament to the strength of the Minor Threats line to tell big stories in a familiar caped setting while never sacrificing storytelling. From the world of the hit Minor Threats series comes a family drama starring the planet's most feared villains.   Napoleon Archimedes is the archnemesis of The Searcher, and he's fought her to a standstill for over four decades in the futuristic metropolis of Meteor Falls. But now, as he confronts his mortality, he's forced to name a successor from his three extraordinary children: Athena, Benjamin, and Spookshow. Each brilliant, cunning ... and unlucky enough to be the child of the world's greatest supervillain.   See, Napoleon believed he was smart enough to have it all: Raise a family AND conquer the world. Then he thought: Why not combine them? Take the kids on as partners. Create a dynasty... None of it went according to plan. Who will rise above the betrayal, failure, and dysfunction to seize the family business?   Join us for an unlikely coming-of-age story that wrestles with the concussions and repercussions of getting raised by a once-in-a-generation criminal mind. Think your father is manipulative, cold, and demanding...? Wait until you meet Napoleon.

In 1972, Jerry Lewis—the actor and filmmaker known for slapstick comedies like The Nutty Professor—took the biggest risk of his career when he decided to make a drama called The Day The Clown Cried, about a circus clown who ends up in Auschwitz. This could have been a landmark as one of the first portrayals of the Holocaust in American cinema. Instead, it became a different kind of landmark: allegedly, one of the worst movies ever. The Day The Clown Cried was never released, and only a handful of people have ever seen it. But the unbelievable concept alone has been enough to make this lost movie a holy grail for curious film buffs. In this episode of Decoder Ring, producer Max Freedman traces how The Day The Clown Cried became such a legendary disaster, why it's impossible to see, and whether it actually deserves its rotten reputation. You'll hear from comedian Patton Oswalt; Shawn Levy, author of King of Comedy: The Life and Art of Jerry Lewis; Henry Gonshak, author of Hollywood and the Holocaust; Chuck Denton, whose father Charles co-wrote The Day The Clown Cried; and Jean-Michel Frodon, film critic at slate.fr.
