Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt joins Sam to catch up where they left off during the first Trump administration and how they simply can’t believe we’re doing round two of this shit. They discuss how there’s money in outrage and how it drives engagement, and how news channels take advantage of your cortisol levels to keep you engaged with constant alerts of BREAKING NEWS. Patton explains why he no longer interacts with people on X but still can’t leave his followers behind, and why they both now mostly use social media to self-soothe, while others are left to raw-dog their boredom. They talk about the need for young nerds to go into politics and what Trump would be doing if Sam was still on TV. A girl can dream! Check out Patton’s new special, Black Coffee and Ice Water, available on Audible. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. This week we have...Mike and Bill, doing this thing that they do.Mike started out with something a little different. It was reading, but it was actually from a speech that Dr. Bob gave in Cleveland, in July of 1950. He talked about AA, the simplicity of the program and keeping it that way. He also talked about kindness, consideration and tolerance. It was a great thing to hear and discuss. We chatted about family events. Mike was with family last weekend for an early Thanksgiving and Bill was able to get together with his kids. Then it was self care, do we do enough for others, hiding away in early sobriety, feeling sorry for ourselves and Patton Oswalt. We both enjoy him and he's a fellow atheist. Apparently he and Mike hang out at the meetings. We wrapped up with a story about an artificial intelligence teddy bear that got naughty. Patton Oswalt begins his latest stand-up special (‘Black Coffee and Ice Water,' streaming on Audible Nov. 20) by reading a fake disclaimer about how he's gone full MAGA in an attempt to avoid the authoritarian hand of Donald Trump. It's a funny bit that also underscores the comedian's very real fears about being an outspokenly anti-fascist voice in 2025 America. In his third appearance on the podcast, Oswalt talks about the freedom of putting together an audio-only special, which includes jokes about his teenage daughter and celebrating 30 years on Prozac. He also shares his visceral reaction to Jimmy Kimmel's suspension, Donald Trump's “mediocrity,” the MAGA-friendly comedians who happily took Saudi Arabia's money, and what keeps him performing stand-up nearly 40 years into his career. Bill Maher pours a drink and settles in with Patton Oswalt for a sharp, hilarious tour through comedy, culture, and the weird world we call home. From dissecting Carly Simon's “You're So Vain” to breaking down Trump as the ultimate teenage troll, Patton digs into the line between being childlike and childish, how audiences have evolved (or devolved), and what really fuels creative greatness. They cover how technology accidentally wiped out the classic serial killer, swap stories about Conan O'Brien's cult-favorite Lookwell, revisit Johnny Carson's legendary mean streak and his unexpected love for comics, and debate everything from politics to pop culture—sometimes clashing, always laughing. To echo a certain tiny Parisian chef: not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. Greg Jenner is joined in the 18th century by Professor Frank Cogliano and comedian and actor Patton Oswalt to learn about the American War of Independence. Also known as the American Revolutionary War, 2025 marks 250 years since the start of the conflict in 1775, when the first battles between the British army and the colonial resistance were fought at Lexington and Concord. But what caused Britain's North American colonies to rebel against the king and government in London? At what point did they start to see themselves as American and not British? And how did a colonial militia take on an imperial superpower? This episode charts the growing rift between Britain and its American colonists, taking in famous events like the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party and the calling of the first Continental Congress, all the way through to the Declaration of Independence and the course of the revolutionary war itself. We learn how America fought to free itself from the shackles of British rule, and meet some well-known names from history, including Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and George Washington. And we also ask whose freedom was being fought for, and who – such as Black and Indigenous Americans – got left behind. This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode. Megan and Evan hold down the fort again this week, while Dave's on vacation. Megan kicks things off with a review of CHAIN REACTIONS (2:25), Alexandre O. Philippe's insightful documentary about THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, which takes an intriguing approach: it examines the film's impact on five artists — Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama — exploring how it shaped their art and psyche from childhood trauma. Megan is a big fan and highly recommends it. Next, both of us discuss Bryan Bertino's disappointing psychological horror film Vicious (20:55), starring Dakota Fanning and Kathryn Hunter. The movie, which is streaming on Paramount+, follows a woman (Fanning) who must fight for her life after receiving a mysterious box from a late-night visitor (Hunter). It features murky visuals, plot, and ideas that failed to capture our attention. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Rob Reiner's 1990 horror film MISERY, starring James Caan and Kathy Bates, in honor of its 35th anniversary!

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's October, so that means it's time for our “Shocktober” series, where we cover movies that go bump in the night! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Tony Sedani discuss Tom Savini's overlooked 1990 remake of the George Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead!A quick pace! Mild undead nudity! Shocking neck violence! A door you can punch through! A female lead who transitions from damsel in distress to legitimate action hero! Fantastic makeup effects and memorable zombie designs, including one that's twisted up like a pretzel! A great "one awful night in a single location" movie! No real explanation for the horrors that ensue! Social commentary on division and class war! Good ol' boys toying with zombies! Feelings of hopelessness! An impossible Candyman reference! A cast that includes the legendary Tony Todd, Laura Dern's stunt double from Jurassic Park, Patricia Tallman, the writer of The Gingerdead Man, William Butler, an unrecognizable Bill Moseley, and Tom Towles as the worst dude ever! While it may live in the shadow of the 1968 original, it's one of the better remakes and some people's preferred version of Night of the Living Dead! In addition, Alex talks about his favorite movies from Fantastic Fest 2025, including the Iko Uwais-produced martial arts extravaganza Ikatan Darah, Johannes Roberts' monkey-gone-mad creature feature Primate, Justin Long's unique take on corrupt cops in Los Angeles, Night Patrol, Steve Kostanki's Deathstalker, V/H/S/Halloween, the shark thriller Beast of War, and Curry Barker's oddly funny cautionary horror tale, Obsession! Finally, Tony shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Long Walk, One Battle After Another, Good Boy, and The Smashing Machine, while Alex does the same for the Shudder original Night of the Reaper, and the realization of a plumber's worst nightmare, Scared Shitless! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. The filmmaker Steven Feinartz ("The Bitter Buddha") makes his first appearance on the podcast. His new documentary is called "Are We Good?". "Are We Good?", which premiered out of SXSW Film & TV Festival and screened out of Tribeca Festival is not a biopic, nor is it a stand-up routine film – it is a look at one person's process through grief told with honesty, humanity, and humor. The touching documentary not only dives into the career and life of comedian and podcast pioneer Marc Maron but focuses on his process grieving the loss of his partner Lynn Shelton who passed during Covid, as well as his relationship with his declining father. Thank you for listening to the Following Films Podcast. Today, we're diving into a film that's as much about cinema history as it is about the raw, unsettling power of horror. Fifty years after Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre shocked the world and permanently altered the landscape of filmmaking, a new documentary is taking a hard, fascinating look at its legacy. It's called Chain Reactions—winner of the Venice Classics Award for Best Documentary on Cinema and an official selection at festivals like Telluride, Sitges, and BFI London. The film brings together voices like Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama, weaving their personal impressions, memories, and even traumas into a dialogue about how one scrappy, no-budget horror film embedded itself into our collective nightmares—and never left. The documentary is written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, a filmmaker who has carved out his own space as the leading voice in what he calls “cinema essays.” From 78/52 to Memory: The Origins of Alien to Lynch/Oz, Philippe has built a career exploring not just movies, but the cultural and artistic forces behind them. With Chain Reactions, he once again peels back the layers of a cinematic landmark.Today's episode of the Following Films Podcast is brought to you by Google Workspace.
