Welcome back to Transmissions—far out conversations for far out times. This week, we're joined by synthesist Jill Fraser. She's lived a remarkable life in music: mentored by Morton Subotnick, she went on work in film and television, with projects like 1974's sci-fi fantasy Zardoz and Paul Schrader's 1979 film Hardcore to her name, in addition to a litany of commercials featuring her inventive sound design. In the '80s, she found herself on the outskirts of LA's thriving punk scene, and now, she's released a new album, Earthly Pleasures, on the storied Drag City label. A science fiction saga in sonic form, it finds Fraser working with tools like her 1978 Serge Modular, Prism Modular and Ableton Push 3 to reconfigure, expand, and transmute revival hymns of the 19th and early 20th centuries, asking the question: what might this music sound like to some extraterrestrial or robotic intelligence countless years in the future? In this thoughtful conversation with host Jason P. Woodbury, Fraser opens up about her working relationship with composer Jack Nitzsche, her excitement about AI technology, and how the sci-fi trappings of Earthly Pleasures belie reflections about art, family, spirituality, and mortality. What did Jill think the first time she say Sean Connery's infamous Zardoz costume, close your eyes and drop into this transmission to find out. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Why do we love science fiction movies? Sometimes it's because they take us to strange new worlds. Other times they just have the best effects, the biggest explosions, or the most guns. But when science fiction movies become legendary it's often because they tell us something deep, true and meaningful. Then there are the science fiction movies that step up to bat for legendary status take a big swing and miss and sometimes, as much as we love the hits, we love those misses # Become a member of the Science Fiction community to continue the discussion Website - https://damiengwalter.com YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/DamienWalter/membership Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/DamienWalter Subscribe to the Science Fiction podcast feed for long-form commentaries on these video essays https://damiengwalter.com/podcast/ Join the Science Fiction community on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/324897304599197/

The Dank Diplomat Ngaio Bealum is back on OMFYS and he's picked a pair of movies to get high to from Criterion Channel's current series HOLLYWOOD CRACK-UP: THE DECADE AMERICAN CINEMA LOST ITS MIND. First, LEE MARVIN is punching dudes in the nuts and throwing them out of high-rise windows all to get his $93,000 back in POINT BLANK (1967). It's heavy on the testosterone but has lots of psychedelic and French New Wave touches from then-young director JOHN BOORMAN, who went on to make some of the trippiest movies ever made with EXCALIBUR (1981) & ZARDOZ (1974). Also starring Angie Dickenson, Sharon Acker, Carrol O'Connor (Archie Bunker), and introducing John Vernon (Dean Wormer from Animal House). Then SIDNEY POITIER is a prison psychiatrist trying to unravel the twisted psyche of a deranged but dangerous nazi played with menace by crooner BOBBY DARIN. This movie is chock full of the tripped-out dream sequences that we live for on this podcast, all set to an awesome jazz theremin score by Ernest Gold and photographed with intensity by Ernest Haller, the man who shot GONE WITH THE WIND and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. This is the forgotten collaboration between producer Stanley Kramer and Poitier, who also made THE DEFIANT ONES (1958) and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967), but Bob thinks PRESSURE POINT is their best. And if all that ain't enough, we've got a young PETER FALK thrown in here for good measure. Both movies are now streaming on CRITERION CHANNEL, which is really knocking it out of the park these days. Anthony Galluzzo's new book Against the Vortex: Zardoz and Degrowth Utopias in the Seventies and Today offers a delightfully adventurous set of takes on some of this podcast's running obsessions: the collapse of the 1960s left, revolutionary violence, cult cinema, weird sex rituals, 1970s communes and “intentional communities,” population bombs, nuclear futures and, perhaps most of all, the religious belief in infinite technological progress that animates both the right and left. Fully automated luxury communism, anyone? In this conversation, Galluzzo shares how Zardoz's bizarre story of a bikini-clad Sean Connery's prison break from a dystopian society recovers the lost “degrowth” movements of the 1970s and brings us a radically different vision of our collective future. ‘Tis the season for William S. It is always an honor to host Eric G. Wilson; this time, he discusses his latest work, Point Blank. We will explore the themes and impact of filmmaker John Boorman, an influence on many of today's great directors like Quentin Tarantino, Michael Mann, and Christopher Nolan. Our focus will be the film Point Blank, but we'll extend to other classics like Excalibur, Deliverance, and Zardoz. Beyond Gnostic themes in Boorman's canon, we'll find the powerful ideas of trauma healing, gaining a spiritual life, and the importance of the divine feminine in any man's life. Expect discussions on David Lynch and John Wick.Homepage: https://thegodabovegod.com/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/aeonbyteAB Prime: https://thegodabovegod.com/members/subscription-levels/ Virtual Alexandria Academy: https://thegodabovegod.com/virtual-alexandria-academy/Voice Over services: https://thegodabovegod.com/voice-talent/ Astro Gnosis (Meet the Archons): https://thegodabovegod.com/meet-archon-replay/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/aeon-byte-gnostic-radio/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
