Only Three Lads: Daniel House from C/Z Records & '80s Proto-Grunge Band Skin Yard - Top 5 American Indie Labels of the '80s

Rock N Roll Pantheon

The 1980s saw an explosion of independent record labels across the US, shaping the sound and spirit of underground music to this day. This week, Daniel House from Skin Yard and C/Z Records joins us as we dive into some of the finest labels whose DIY ethos, fearless experimentation, and raw energy broke away from the corporate music machine. One of the crucial American indie labels of the era was C/Z Records, the Seattle imprint that will forever be remembered as the second most important label in the burgeoning grunge scene. That being said, it was C/Z, not Sub Pop, who released the defining document of the new sound of the Pacific Northwest with 1986's Deep Six compilation - introducing Soundgarden, The Melvins, U-Men, Green River, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard. Founded in 1985 by Chris Hanzek and Tina Casale, Skin Yard bassist Daniel House took over operation of C/Z in 1987, subsequently releasing music by Nirvana, Henry Rollins, Built To Spill, The Gits, Hammerbox, Presidents of the United States of America, 7 Year B---h, Coffin Break and many more. Skin Yard was a foundational band in the development of the grunge movement, not only due to the groundbreaking music they recorded between 1985 - 1991, but also the band members' other contributions to Seattle music. Aside from the aforementioned impact that House made with C/Z Records, guitarist Jack Endino would go on to produce and engineer some of the most enduring records of the era - including Nirvana's Bleach, and music by Mudhoney, Tad, Soundgarden, L7, and Screaming Trees. Lead singer Ben McMillan would form the band Gruntruck, and sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 46. Drummer Matt Cameron is a world class musician who has been behind the kit for Soundgarden and, for the past 25 years, with Pearl Jam. Skin Yard Select is the brand new, limited collection of 14 songs loving curated by Daniel House and Jack Endino, culling tracks from their four studio albums, but also featuring enough rarities to please long-time fans. This beautiful package consists of seven individual 7" singles, each in their own sleeve and pressed on limited edition colored vinyl (or good ol' fashioned black). One of the all time great bands, L7 fused laugh out loud humor with a caveman punk aggression that made them stand out like a blistered sore thumb against the L.A. hair metal landscape of the late ‘80s. But they were chicks, man — so rather than be spoken about in the same righteous breath as the Stooges or the Ramones, the members of L7 had to put up with inane questions about Vixen(?!?). No matter. As with most awesome things, L7 are still here and their influence looms larger than ever. On this episode we talk to co-founder Donita Sparks about Matthew Sweet covers, Epitaph records, the siren song of LA surf music, Slash records, Sub Pop, yacht rock, Rock For Choice, Milwaukee book makers, fights at Exit, John Waters, SMELL THE MAGIC, and we play the best round of what's the best ever!

What is up, Slackers! On this week's episode we explore the evolution of grunge beyond its iconic pioneers. Sometimes it is easy to forget that grunge had a second (early to mid-1990s) and even third wave (late 1990s to early 2000s) of bands that shaped the genre's legacy. We highlight 14 second-wave acts, from Seattle's sludgy core to punk-infused and noise-rock outliers - some initially dismissed as posers who would go on to be massive stars. Then, we cover six third-wave bands, blending "grunge" with more alt-rock and indie rock influences. Who knew there were this many grunge bands not named Nirvana, Soundgarden, or Pearl Jam?! Oh, and I fully blame a certain early 2000's band with completely taking down guitar driven rock music - possibly forever.Listen now on Spreaker, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all major platforms. Erin Marlow of It's a Fandom Thing joins Nicole and Ryan to talk about the 1994 Oliver Stone film, Natural Born Killers. It began as a Quentin Tarantino script before Oliver Stone turned it into an entirely different thing, which is just one of many controversies that surround this film. What's not controversial is the greatness of the Natural Born Killers Soundtrack. Trent Reznor currated the soundtrack and contributed two Nine Inch Nails to the soundtrack, specifically writing "Burn" for the film. The soundtrack also features songs from Leonard Cohen, Lard, L7, The Cowboy Junkies, Peter Gabriel and more.Chapters00:00:00 Introducing Erin of It's a Fandom Thing and Why She Chose Natural Born Killers17:34 Trent Reznor - Soundtrack Currator / Serial Killer Afficionado28:39 Tarantino Meets Johnny Cash and Casting the Leads of the Film39:05 The Bands on the Natural Born Killer Soundtrack43:05 Juliette Lewis' Breakthrough Peformance51:47 The 90 Aesthetics, Commercials and Gangsta Rap59:17 Back to the Soundtrack1:07:30 One Last Question1:13:37 Thank You's and GoodbyesIt's a Fandom Thing Socials:TikTokBlueskyInstagram

Step up to the edge of counterculture with Air Tight Episode 121, where we explore a mix of headlines that challenge the mainstream and embrace the #rebel spirit.  This week, we're diving into groundbreaking news: a new study reveals that #smoking grass might not affect your memory after all—breaking #myths and stirring conversations in the #cannabis community. We'll also discuss #Morocco's historic decision to pardon 5,000 cannabis farmers, marking a monumental shift in global legalization efforts.  And if that wasn't enough, we're taking you onstage with Jane's Addiction as tempers flare and band members clash in a live performance that proves rock ‘n' roll is still as chaotic and alive as ever. We're not just talking headlines, though.  This episode is filled with #music that speaks to the #soul of rebellion—featuring tracks from L7, 2Pac, Patsy Cline, James Brown, and many more.  Each song is a statement of defiance, love, and liberation, echoing through the speakers and into the hearts of those who refuse to conform. On their second album Young And Full Of The Devil, Magic Dirt blended fuzzed out psych and stoner riffage with a grunge-tinged snarl. The throat shredding vocals of Adalita Srsen lend comparisons to bands like Hole, The Distillers, or L7, but the band delves into darker, scuzzier territory on tracks like the opening opus "Babycakes" and the closer and bonus track "Babycakes You Always Freeze Me Up." The foursome display a penchant for uptempo riffage on songs like "Rabbit With Fangs" and the appropriately titled "She-Riff" layered in a variety of guitar pedals and effects, but some odd choices on the back half of the record left us scratching our heads about what started out with strong intentions but veered into less concise territory.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Short Black 22:03 - Shrinko 28:54 - She-Riff 35:02 - Ascot Red 43:36 - X-Ray Outro - Rabbit With Fangs   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Además, Eze y MaGnUs reseñan la única miniserie spin-off del comic, Tales From The Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death, por Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, INJ Culbard, y Nate Piekos. L7 were pioneers. Yes, there were all female rock bands before, but how many rocked as hard as they did with as much authenticity? Those four girls let it all hang out and walked it like they talked it. Success had to find them, they weren't going to play any games to find it. They finally broke through with 'Pretend We're Dead" off their third album, but it was hard keeping it all together and the band began to fracture soon after. For the last several years, the original members have reformed for a new album (2019's Scatter the Rats), several "victory lap" tours celebrating their legacy. Donita Sparks joins us this week to discuss the whole story including hanging out with Lemmy, Nick Cave and Butch Vig as well as filming Serial Mom with John Waters, the response to their 2016 documentary, and tons more. Mia Zapata and the Gits: A True Story of Art, Rock and Revolution (Ferel House, 2024) by Steve Moriarty, shares the story of the Seattle based The Gits and their charismatic front person Mia Zapata. The Gits were on the verge of international rock stardom but on July 7, 1993, days before their third US tour, Mia Zapata, The Gits 27-year-old singer-songwriter, was brutally assaulted and murdered by a stranger. Zapata's death sent chilling ripples through progressive communities throughout the United States. She became a cause-celebre for women's rights activists outraged by the brutal killing and lack of law enforcement support.  This book reclaims Zapata's story to focus on the art she and The Gits created and not her tragic end. Much has been written and said about her murder, yet Zapata's life and work remain overshadowed by the circumstances of her death. Zapata's friend and bandmate, Steve Moriarty, tells her story--and the story of their band, The Gits--from their first meeting in 1985 to their last goodbye. Moriarity and Zapata met in 1985 as first-year students at Antioch College, where they discovered the power of punk rock and found an outlet for their progressive ideas through music. Zapata, Moriarity, and fellow students Matt Dresdner and Andy Kessler attended a show by San Francisco punk legends Dead Kennedys that inspired the friends to start a band fueled by Mia's provocative lyrics. They quickly gained critical praise and dedicated fans.  Moriarty details their struggles as newcomers to the then-pre-tech outpost of the Seattle music scene. Interspersed are the tales Zapata told of her legendary ancestor, Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, to entertain the band as they spent countless hours on the road crammed into a single un-air-conditioned van touring the US and Europe. They shared stages with Beck, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Joan Jett, Bikini Kill, L7, and more--all who expected Mia and The Gits to be the next "big thing." The Gits's story is more than a biography; it's a testament to the ability of artists and musicians to challenge the status quo and the power of friendship to change the world. Moriarty reframes the sensationalist story as he shares his personal narrative and presents, with intimacy, grit, and humor, the lived experience of The Gits and his dear friend, Mia Zapata.
