To celebrate queer joy, blossoming, and vibrant life I invite you to join us for a special Unruly Podcast episode. It weaves together the illuminating stories of 6 different people, now in their mid 20's and 30's, who grew up in rural spaces as queer youth. There they found refuge in nature, belonging in the outdoors, and community in the unlikeliest of places. You'll find yourself laughing and crying right along with us as we dive into bubbling river rapids, contemplate forbidden crushes in the heat of summer church camp, and explore all the spaces in-between in an episode that defies time and gender norms. This conversation is a glimpse into the tender coming-of-age moments for queer youth and the hilarity, struggle, and metamorphosis that brings us to adulthood. What does it really mean to travel authentically in a world dominated by filtered Instagram perfection? Buster Upton, a 26-year-old Australian adventurer, has the honest answer—and it's not what you might expect. From his spontaneous childhood road trips with his adventure-loving mother to finding himself enrolled in a Finnish school at 16 (instead of dropping out), Buster's approach to travel has always been refreshingly genuine. At just 18, he quit his first construction job, used his dual Irish citizenship, and set off to backpack across Europe—a pattern that would define his approach to exploring the world. The magic of Buster's storytelling lies in his willingness to share both the highlights and the gritty reality of long-term travel. Standing amid the haunting remnants of Chernobyl, participating in Laos' water-drenched Buddhist New Year celebrations, or finding himself stranded in a Filipino town with no water or electricity—these experiences reveal the true essence of exploration. As Buster puts it, "90% of backpacking isn't glamorous," but those challenges make the journey worthwhile.Unlike the travel influencers who portray laptop-driven nomadic lifestyles, Buster's method is beautifully straightforward: work hard in construction back home, save aggressively, then purchase a one-way ticket to somewhere new. His preference for Couchsurfing with locals rather than staying in hotels offers authentic cultural immersion that can't be captured in a carefully staged photo. For Buster, adventure means embracing the unknown with a hint of fear, stepping completely out of your comfort zone, and becoming "a drop in the ocean" of someone else's normal life. His stories will inspire you to look beyond the perfect Instagram shot and discover what travel really means—connecting with the world as it actually exists.Ready to rethink what adventure truly means?

On me demande souvent quel sera mon prochain projet de livre.
How do you balance your love for family with your personal convictions, especially when welcoming LGBTQ family members during the holiday season? This episode of Calibrate Conversations challenges you to explore the delicate art of setting boundaries that honor both personal beliefs and foster meaningful connections. Join me, Brady Cone, as I share my own journey and convictions about inviting loved ones into our homes when their lifestyles might challenge traditional biblical teachings. Through prayer, discernment, and wisdom, discover how to extend grace and hospitality while staying true to your conscience.Hospitality is a cornerstone of Christian living, but it doesn't come without its complexities. Drawing from my experiences as a Couchsurfing host, I delve into the moral dilemmas that arise when guests' lifestyles clash with my convictions, such as hosting unmarried couples. By questioning the limits of spiritual authority and exploring the balance between biblical convictions and nurturing relationships, this episode offers insights into how to prioritize connection and gospel-sharing over attempting to control others' behaviors. Whether it means setting separate accommodations or organizing distinct holiday gatherings, I aim to inspire you to foster a loving and respectful home environment that reflects genuine care.Navigating family dynamics during the holidays can be a tightrope walk, particularly when it involves LGBTQ family members. This episode encourages open conversations about personal convictions while striving to create an environment of grace and understanding. Reflecting on Jesus' example of associating with those deemed sinners, we consider how to set boundaries that protect without alienating, and invite without compromising core beliefs. Through thoughtful exploration of these themes, listeners are empowered to foster relationships that remain true to their values while embracing the transformative power of love and hospitality.Join us weekly as we strive help people embrace God's standard for sexuality! What happens when artificial intelligence starts weighing in on our moral decisions? Matt Prewitt is joined by Meaning Alignment Institute co-founder Joe Edelman to explore this thought-provoking territory in examining how AI is already shaping our daily experiences and values through social media algorithms. They explore the tools developed to help individuals negotiate their values and the implications of AI in moral reasoning – venturing into compelling questions about human-AI symbiosis, the nature of meaningful experiences, and whether machines can truly understand what matters to us. For anyone intrigued by the future of human consciousness and decision-making in an AI-integrated world, this discussion opens up fascinating possibilities – and potential pitfalls – we may not have considered.Links & References: References:CouchSurfing - Wikipedia | CouchSurfing.org | WebsiteTristan Harris: How a handful of tech companies control billions of minds every day | TED TalkCenter for Humane Technology | WebsiteMEANING ALIGNMENT INSTITUTE | WebsiteReplika - AI Girlfriend/BoyfriendWill AI Improve Exponentially At Value Judgments? - by Matt Prewitt | RadicalxChangeMoral Realism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Summa Theologica - WikipediaWhen Generative AI Refuses To Answer Questions, AI Ethics And AI Law Get Deeply Worried | AI RefusalsAmanda Askell: The 100 Most Influential People in AI 2024 | TIME | Amanda Askells' work at AnthropicOvercoming Epistemology by Charles TaylorGod, Beauty, and Symmetry in Science - Catholic Stand | Thomas Aquinas on symmetryFriedrich Hayek - Wikipedia | “Hayekian”Eliezer Yudkowsky - Wikipedia | “AI policy people, especially in this kind Yudkowskyian scene”Resource-rational analysis: Understanding human cognition as the optimal use of limited computational resources | Resource rational (cognitive science term)Papers & posts mentioned[2404.10636] What are human values, and how do we align AI to them? | Paper by Oliver Klingefjord, Ryan Lowe, Joe EdelmanModel Integrity - by Joe Edelman and Oliver Klingefjord | Meaning Alignment Institute SubstackBios:Joe Edelman is a philosopher, sociologist, and entrepreneur whose work spans from theoretical philosophy to practical applications in technology and governance. Was ihnen Hoffnung gibt. They highlight the dual nature of AI as both a disruptive force and an enabler of new opportunities.
In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I take you to the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City. My journey begins with a near-miss on a scooter taxi, a thrilling initiation into the city's chaotic traffic. At my hostel, I join a communal dinner, savoring spring rolls and beer with fellow travelers, creating memories that would draw me back years later. My exploration includes a visit to the Cu Chi tunnels, a labyrinthine network that once sheltered and supplied soldiers during the war. Crawling through these narrow, dark tunnels, I feel a mix of claustrophobia and fascination, a stark contrast to the amusement park-like atmosphere of the site. Next, I venture into Cambodia, landing in Siem Reap with the majestic Angkor Wat on my itinerary. After a serendipitous encounter with Fortunata via Couchsurfing, we meet a local taxi driver who takes us to an unexpected yet delightful restaurant experience. Despite initial skepticism, the evening turns out to be a culinary adventure, complete with impeccable service and unbelievably low prices. The following day, Angkor Wat's grandeur leaves me in awe, and a chance meeting with Hama, who would later invite me to Singapore, marks the beginning of a life-changing encounter.

Read the full transcript here. What are the best ways to define "values" and "meaning"? How can democratic processes harness people's intrinsic values and sources of meaning to increase their agency, cooperation, participation, equality, etc.? To what extent do political rivals — or even the bitterest of political enemies — actually value many of the same things? Might we be able to use AIs as "neutral" third-party mediators to help reduce political polarization, especially on an interpersonal level? How can we transform our personal values and sources of meaning into positive, shared visions for society? Are markets inherently antisocial? Or are they just easily made to be so? Companies frequently invoke our deepest needs and values as a bait-and-switch to sell us their goods and services; but since there must actually be demand to have those deep needs met and those deep values realized, why do companies so rarely attempt to supply goods and services that address those things directly? Assuming there actually is a lot of overlap in intrinsic values and sources of meaning across individuals and across groups, why do we still have such a hard time developing shared visions for society?Joe Edelman is a philosopher, sociologist, and entrepreneur. He invented the meaning-based metrics used at CouchSurfing, Facebook, and Apple, and co-founded the Center for Humane Technology and the Meaning Alignment Institute. His biggest contribution is a definition of "human values" that's precise enough to create product metrics, aligned ML models, and values-based democratic structures. In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I recount our journey from Irkutsk to Mongolia, an adventure that brought unexpected friendships and breathtaking natural beauty into our lives. Her stories, filled with humor and resilience, were both inspiring and a stark reminder of the vast experiences the world has to offer. Our next major stop was Lake Baikal, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and stunning natural beauty. This part of the trip was a profound experience, offering moments of reflection and connection with nature. The simplicity and magnificence of Baikal, coupled with the shared moments with friends old and new, underscored the journey's essence.
