Director Mary Herron and her co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner did what 'American Psycho' author Bret Easton Ellis thought was impossible: made a film of his controversial, considered-unfilmable 1991. novel.  And the lens through which they espied Patrick Bateman proved exactly the right way to gain something meaningful out of what, frankly, is a pretty unreadable and repetitive novel. The astonishing lead performance from Christian Bale catapulted him to the stardom and rarified air he continues to occupy as an actor today.  And the performance is a wonder to dissect, if you'll pardon the pun. Featuring a wonderful assortment of supporting actors like Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Justin Theroux, Reese Witherspoon, Reg E. Cathey, Josh Lucas, Matt Ross, Jared Leto, Cara Seymour and Samantha Mathis, the film is one of the most essential films about NYC in the 80's.

Synopsis Beetlejuice Beetlejuice picks up thirty years after the events of the first film, with Delia Deetz being a famous artist, Lydia having her own ghost adventures type show, and her daughter Astrid being a goth angsty teen. The Deetz family has to deal with the sudden loss of the paternal figure in their lives while also grappling with their own individual battles. When Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega, gets stuck in the afterlife and Beetlejuice's ex wife Delores, played by Monica Belluci, starts stalking him, Lydia makes another glorious deal with Beetlejuice to save her daughter and get Monica Belluci off Beetlejuice's back. Chaos ensues. Review As I've said many times, I am not a big fan of sequels. I was not very excited to see this, since it is a sequel so many years after the first I figured it was another cash grab. That very well might be true, but I unexpectedly had a really fun time watching this. Michael Keaton soars as the titular character once again, and with this star studded cast, it is almost a perfect comedy. Catherine O'Hara remains one of the funniest women who has ever set foot on screen, and the welcome additions of Willem Dafoe and Justin Theroux also put in the work to get some laughs. A few complaints are that I think I liked the practical effects and primitive CGI in the first movie a lot better than I liked the new CGI stuff in this one. It looked corny and even though this movie isn't geared towards kids, the sandworm looked like something out of a Nick Jr. tv show. Also, there were a lot of moving parts that could have been cut down to one A and one B plot. All in all it is a very fun, new take on the Beetlejuice universe, and I loved it.  Score 8/10

They pulled off that trip like professionals and the optics were amazing. Colombia's Vice President Francia Marquez said that Harry and Meghan's visit really highlighted tourism. We heard that it only cost Colombia less than $60,000 to provide security for them. The Sussexes did a great job making photos available to agencies. Emily Andrews let it slip that Buckingham Palace had talking points about this trip. King Charles went to Southport last week to visit the families of children who were murdered in a knife attack. Charles has been staying in Scotland at his smaller home, Birkhall, while other members of the family stay at Balmoral. Kate was seen headed to church there on August 25th. There was a story in GB News that Zara and Mike Tindall were being asked to relieve Prince William and Princess Kate. There's an undercurrent that William and Kate are incapable of doing their jobs. Prince Harry made a secret visit to the UK last week to go to his uncle Robert Fellowes' funeral. Harry stayed at Althorp with the Earl Spencer. You could tell that the Windsors were super mad they didn't know about Harry's visit ahead of time. The Windsors are mad at how much the Spencers support Harry. There's been a narrative in the British press that Harry wants to come back to the UK to do royal work. It's clearly coming from William's side. This narrative has been pushed by William for years. Chandra thinks this storyline is an attempt to distract from what's going on with Kate. Toward the end of this month Prince Harry is going to be in New York solo for UN climate week. He's going to speak at the Clinton Global Initiative. Prince William will not be going to NY on behalf of Earthshot despite pathetically trying to copykeen Harry's trip last year. We wonder why William and Kate didn't do any events during the Sussexes' trip. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: Minutes 21:00 to 31:30 This week both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt premiered their movies at the Venice Film Festival. Angelina is starring as opera star Maria Callas in the biopic Maria. She is getting Oscar buzz for that and it's coming out on Netflix. Braad is starring with George Clooney in the Apple streaming movie Wolfs. It was supposed to come out in theaters but that's not happening. Brad Pitt made his red carpet debut with Ines de Ramon. Brad and Angelina are covering People Magazine this week with the title “Brad and Angelina, their 8 year divorce, Can they Finally Move On,” as if Brad's legal battle against Angelina is mutual. The whole narrative comes from Brad and it's the same garbage we've seen from him for years as he uses legal means to continue to try and punish Angelina for leaving him after he abused her and their children. Brad Pitt looks pulled and puffy recently. There's been a shift in public perception about Brad Pitt, especially since Shiloh changed her last name.
