Episode 218: David Bazan on 20 Years of 'Headphones'

Vinyl Emergency

Though a rather one-off side-project, David Bazan says his Headphones LP may be his most stressful artistic expression. Though the band Pedro the Lion was his breadwinning endeavor at the time, he admits to losing interest in guitar, album by album. Suddenly, dabbling in synthesizers led to not just a new avenue for songwriting, but a borderline obsession, bringing his gear everywhere from lakeside family vacations to vacant movie theatre parking lots in order to perfect these unconventional sounds, alone. Putting the album to tape was a whole other hill to climb, leading to David staying up several days straight, attempting to finish incomplete songs literal minutes before the rest of his band would hear them for the first time, and then record them. But fast-forward to now, and the lone Headphones album is regarded as a crucial corner of David's discography, one that he's now revisiting with a new deluxe 20th anniversary vinyl edition, available in multiple color variants, from both Suicide Squeeze and Undertow. On this episode, David gives us the how's, where's and why's on the entire Headphones experience, two decades removed. Catch Pedro the Lion opening for Grandaddy this fall, as well as live streams of their 30th anniversary performances. Details, tickets and more are at  pedrothelion.com.

Ohio State was able to ring in the new year the right way, obliterating the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl to earn a place in the College Football Playoff semifinals. The Buckeyes opened the game white hot on both sides of the ball, carving up the Duck defense in just a few plays and harassing Dillon Gabriel when Oregon's offense tried to get things going. It was a few plays from being a perfect game from Will Howard, Jeremiah Smith, TreVeyon Henderson, Jack Sawyer, Caleb Downs, Cody Simon, and company. We looked back at the quarterfinal matchup, gladly ate some necessary crow over our score predictions from last week, checked to see how our picks to click performed (spoiler: one of us picked both the offensive and defensive MVPs of the game), and broke down the game's key plays. After our Oregon rewind, we discussed the other College Football Playoff games and bowl games involving Big Ten teams. The conference continues to show well against everyone else. SEC fans are quick to point out that it's for no reason other than the games being meaningless, though. The B1G couldn't possibly be having a good year, and there's no way the SEC took a half step down in 2024, so just get that thought out of your head right now. After checking the scoreboard, we discussed some transfer portal news. It was completely up to date at the time we recorded, but since then the Buckeyes have added a linebacker and lost a running back. Life, especially in the portal era, comes at you fast. Finally, we looked ahead to Friday's titanic tilt against Texas in...Texas. Yes, the road before Ohio State was stacked as much as it could be against the Buckeyes when this journey began, but that's what you get for losing to Michigan. We checked out the Longhorns' rankings and discussed Ohio State's challenges before selecting our offensive and defensive picks to click and making our score predictions. We would love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or via email at silverbulletspod@gmail.com. Formerly Le Monde's guy in Jerusalem, Piotr Smolar is now the senior correspondent for Le Monde in Washington, DC. He is also the grandson of Hersh Smolar, one of the 20th century's more remarkable men. As Smolar notes in Bad Jew, the astonishing story of his grandfather's life from Stalin's Russia & the Minsk Ghetto to Netanyahu's Israel, there was, in fact, nothing particularly bad about Hersh Smolar. What was bad was history - the genocidal forces in Nazi Germany & the Soviet Union which Smolar fought against - both as an anti-fascist soldier and as a Polish communist. And then there's the Jewish Question, also know today as the Israel Question, with which both Smolars are all-too-familiar. Indeed, Smolar's important new book should probably have been entitled: Bad Jew Grandfathers & Bad Jew Grandsons. Piotr Smolar is a French journalist of Polish origin. He is the senior correspondent for Le Monde in Washington, DC. After working in Moscow from 1997 to 2001, he published a book in French on Russia's heartland, Gloubinka. He extensively covered Russia's neighboring countries, before becoming Le Monde's correspondent in Jerusalem (2014–2019). Bad Jew is his first book to appear in English.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In this episode, Dr. Bryan Gill contemplates what it means to “consider the lilies” in his latest essay. From fly fishing the Cahaba River and standing in awe of how the beautiful Cahaba Lilies thrive through adversity to reminiscing on days of his childhood walking through flower gardens with his Grandaddy, lilies are a constant theme in this essay. What does it mean to “consider the lilies?” Bryan explores parenting, worry, fear, and enjoying life despite the craziness happening around us all when we stop to consider the lilies. We hope you will enjoy this essay and, whether it's visiting the Cahaba River to gaze upon the Cahaba Lilies or strolling through your own backyard, take a moment to consider the lilies for yourself. “‘Consider the Lilies' is the only Commandment I ever obeyed.”  –Emily Dickinson, The Letters of Emily Dickenson  “We have overprotected children in the real world and under-protected them in the virtual world.” - Jonathan Haidt "If you're going to make your kids tough, and they better be if they are going to survive in the world, you can't interfere when they are doing dangerous things carefully.”- Jordan Peterson Use Promo Code TSO For 20% off of your next purchase from www.redbeardsoutfitter.com or in-store  We would love to hear from you; if you have any questions, comments, poems, and or recommendations for us, email us at thestoriedoutdoors@gmail.com Music written and recorded by Brad Hill.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriting visionaries who came to prominence in the 1990s with well respected indie bands, and who both have vital new music out now: Jason Lytle and Gruff Rhys. Lytle started making music under the name Grandaddy back in 1992. He was pro skateboarder who found a second passion in home recording, and as you'll hear in this chat, kind of stumbled upon some guys who helped him flesh out the sound into something both humble and grand. The first run of Grandaddy albums—including Under the Western Freeway and 2000's classic The Sophtware Slump—felt a bit like quieter, more heartfelt cousins to the music the Flaming Lips were making at the time. After that initial run, the band eventually split up, only to reform sporadically over the years. Lytle also recorded some really fascinating solo records while also time—as you'll hear—to try and leave the music world behind a little bit. But he's been called back to the Grandaddy world with a brand new album called Blue WAV, and it's everything you'd expect from him brain: a mixture of sweet sadness with fuzzy guitars and synths from another age. Check out “Cabin in my Mind” from Blue WAV right here. The other half of today's conversation is Gruff Rhys, who just released his 25th album overall in a career that has spanned 35 years and taken some fascinating turns. He's still probably best known as the frontman of the colorful, psych-leaning Welsh pop band Super Furry Animals, which was signed to the venerated Creation Records label back in the 1990s, and whose records and visuals always zigged when you thought they might zag—that's a compliment. For his solo work, Rhys has been genre-expansive to say the least, but his brand new record, Sadness Sets Me Free, is refreshingly straightforward pop. As you'll hear in this chat, it was recorded pretty quickly, without a lot of fuss. It doesn't sound miles away from the new Grandaddy album, really. Check out “Bad Friend” right here. As it turns out, these two toured together a million years ago, and each has fond memories of that time—a soccer match, a special parting gift, and more. They also chat about Lytle's preference to stay away from the madness of the big city, even as he lives perilously close to it once again as well as their tendency to make up words in their songs when the ones that exist just won't do. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Gruff Rhys and Jason Lytle for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. "Everything On Memory" The Fresno-born, Modesto-raised Jim Fairchild got his start on guitar as a teenager and in the mid-nineties became the lead guitar player for the indie rock outfit Grandaddy. That would be enough to make a resume' shimmer, but Fairchild was just getting started. He was the touring guitar player for Giant Sand, he worked with everyone from Hawaii to Dappled Cities and he took over for Johnny Marr in Modest Mouse in 2009 and played lead guitar for them until 2021. Fairchild fronted the band All Smiles, he was selected to lead a project at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2010 and started a new project called Grace Meridian in 2020. But that's not all—Fairchild currently is the Director of A&R for Dangerbird Records and he's scoring films like the documentary Common Ground and Bee The Change, which is narrated by Ellie Goulding. And we haven't even talked about Small Isles yet. Their new EP Everything On Memory has been described by Fairchild as, "written as the imagined score to a Christopher Nolan-directed movie I dreamt about in which Donald and Steven Glover wrote a script in response to Modest Mouse's "Third Planet”. To my ears, Small Isles' new release is a moody blend of spellbinding cinemascapes, arching crescendos, soaring distant melodies and futuristic percussion, all of which adds up to one of the most spellbinding releases of the year. Fairchild recently scored the documentary film Common Ground (Donald Glover, Laura Dern, Woody Harrelson, Rosario Dawson, Ian Somerhalder) which won the Tribeca Film Festival “Human/Nature” award. He is currently working on the follow up, Bee The Change narrated by Ellie Goulding, which will premiere at COP 28 (United Nations Climate Change Conference). Grandaddy - "The Town Where I'm Livin Now" from the 2023 album Sunday: Excess Baggage on Dangerbird Records Long-time KEXP faves Grandaddy recently a digital-only collection of rarities and b-sides titled Sumday: Excess Baggage. With a career spanning three decades, there are a lot of gems within, including today's Song of the Day, a dreamy tribute to songwriter Jason Lytle's home in California. “I like making songs like this," he shares in a press release. "Lots of bleak but sweet visuals. Everyday stuff available for everyone to see…but some of us just end up with the twisted work of documenting it.” On the collection, he continues: “After many years of hammering away at writing and recording as Grandaddy, Sumday seems to be the center of it and where it all peaked. To the journalists we were, ‘On the verge of greatness, underrated, overlooked, unsung.' It was a tumultuous and exciting time for us for sure. Also very exhausting." “Revisiting this material and reflecting on those times has been a double edged sword. Bittersweet is an apt word, I suppose. Twenty years after the fact, I'm just grateful to be alive and kicking… celebrating that moment in time by re-releasing the original album, B sides and extras of that era, and even some raw cassette demos of the album itself a sort of sketchbook/rough draft of the LP in cassette form. So be it then. ‘On the verge of greatness, underrated, overlooked, unsung.' This is what all of that sounds like. I'll take it.” Revisit our 2020 interview with Lytle on their last full-length, 2017's Last Place, and the passing of their bassist Kevin Garcia.  Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
