Forced to abandon the La Conte, the five fishermen — Bob Doyle, Mark Morley, Mike DeCapua, Giggy Mork and David Hanlon — find themselves at the mercy of towering waves and galeforce winds as they float in the frigid sea. As they prayed for a swift rescue, the Coast Guard helicopter crew sent from Sitka soon discovered this wasn't an ordinary, or predictable, storm. What began as a routine morning fishing trip off the Florida coast slowly unraveled into something no one on board could have anticipated.Kyle Willis and his two brothers. An 18-foot boat. Calm weather that didn't stay calm for long.In a matter of moments, a rogue wave hit and the boat they relied on was gone. What remained was open water, fading daylight, and a struggle that would stretch far beyond anything they had prepared for.Out there, time moves differently. Decisions come too late. And help—if it comes at all—has to find you in a place where you shouldn't be visible in the first place. What followed would leave questions and wonder that linger long after the waves settled.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS TO SUPPORT OUR SHOWFor a limited time, our listeners get 15% off when you order from boncharge.com and use our exclusive promo code MIRACLE at checkout!-------------------------------------------------If you're a fan of true crime but crave a dose of inspiration instead of tales of darkness, The Miracle Files is your perfect alternative. What do ocean rowing, flood modelling and insurance innovation have in common? More than you might think. In this episode, Matthew Grant is joined by Harry Vardigans, Head of Insurance at Fathom, for a conversation that spans Atlantic Ocean rowing, catastrophe modelling and the evolving nature of risk in insurance. Later this year, Harry will join three teammates in an attempt to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, travelling from the Canary Islands to Antigua in a nine-metre boat. What starts as a discussion about one of the world's toughest endurance challenges quickly becomes a fascinating exploration of how individuals and organisations prepare for uncertainty, manage risk and make decisions in complex environments. Drawing on both his upcoming expedition and his work helping insurers better understand flood risk, Harry reflects on the parallels between navigating an ocean crossing and navigating today's insurance market. From weather forecasting and route optimisation to insurance availability and regulatory change, the conversation highlights how better data and improved modelling can transform previously uninsurable risks into manageable opportunities. In this conversation, Harry shares: What it takes to prepare for a 3,000-mile Atlantic rowing race The practical realities of managing risk in one of the world's most demanding endurance challenges How weather forecasting and climate intelligence influence decision-making at sea Why ocean rowing has become a more insurable risk over time The role regulation plays in creating new insurance opportunities How Fathom and Swiss Re are combining expertise to advance flood modelling capabilities Why flood risk assessment has changed significantly over the last five years The benefits of maintaining a consistent global approach to catastrophe modelling Lessons from scaling a specialist insurtech business in a competitive market How the philosophy of continuous improvement can apply to both sport and business Why ambitious projects often begin with simply committing to the first step Follow Harry's Atlantic crossing Harry and his crew, Rogue Wave, will be sharing updates as they prepare for and complete their Atlantic crossing. Instagram: @rogue_wave2026 LinkedIn: Rogue Wave Atlantic Row 2026 YouTube: Rogue Wave Vlog Episode 1 – Introductions The team is also raising money for two charities, The HALO Trust and the Cocktower Foundation, with donation links available through their social channels. Harry's recommendation Harry recommends Will It Make The Boat Go Faster? by Ben Hunt-Davis and Harriet Beveridge. The book explores how a relentless focus on actions that directly contribute to your goal can drive exceptional results, a philosophy that has shaped both his approach to business and his preparation for crossing the Atlantic. Barry and Abigail discuss This Warm December and sample März of the Penguins, No Country For Old Penguins, and Midnight Waddle from Sneaky Penguin Brewing Company in Raleigh, North Carolina. We briefly discussed Eggnogorant by friends of the pod Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team. You can listen to Eggnogorant in our first-ever Christmas bonus episode, Bonus: Greet the Hummels... and Friends! (Original Holiday Songs by Friends of the Podcast). We acquired this beer while we were in Raleigh in October, when we had the opportunity to see Brandy Clark and Mary Chapin Carpenter in concert, featuring both friend of the pod Jon Carroll and the legendary Don Dixon in Carpenter's band. See the setlist of the show we saw!We played a sample of Stevie Wonder's original Someday at Christmas, covered by Jack Johnson on this album. Barry mentioned that Wonder's version should have made his personal Christmas music compilation - and he would probably remove Xmas at K-Mart by Root Boy Slim.Bruce Springsteen's live version of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town is the definitive version in Barry's eyes.Barry plugged the recent Beer in Front episode 276 Fresh Wet Hopped Episode, where he learned about wet hopping, which uses freshly picked hops in the brew and is not the opposite of dry hopping - learn more here. The most famous and mass-produced wet-hopped beer is Celebration from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Dave interviewed Bruz Beers and FlyteCo Brewing, both in Denver, Colorado, who collaborate annually on a wet-hopped beer called Hop Is My Co-Pilot. The brewing of this beer involves an airplane trip across the Rockies to collect freshly picked hops from Billy Goat Hop Farm in Montrose, Colorado. Read more about the incredible journey here!Abigail and Barry both declared that Zee Avi's No Christmas for Me is a modern Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses (and that both of those songs are modern O. Henry stories).Abigail mentioned that Stuck at the Airport by Money Mark is thematically similar to I'll Be Home for Christmas by Bing Crosby. This is one of the songs Abigail will frequently be compelled to listen to when her life circumstances match the lyrics of the song - the other one is It's Only Wednesday by Crash Kings. The Man in the Santa Suit by Neil Halstead reminded Abigail of Father Christmas by The Kinks. We played a little sample of Matt Nathanson's cover of Father Christmas, which appears on our 2022 Christmas playlist!Abigail did not recognize that Rogue Wave's Christmas was a cover of the Who song from Tommy. She compared the lyrics to Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid.Barry compared Jack Johnson's variant lyrics in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to many of the songs on the Straight No Chaser album we reviewed in last year's Christmas episode, Christmas Beers (Straight No Chaser and Gifted Beers).Abigail, per usual, got Silent Night confused with O Holy Night.Listen to our 2025 Christmas playlist!Up next… Touch by EurythmicsJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

Imagine a cartoon show where the characters talk back to you. That's the premise for "Cartoon Mess Live", a live comedy show by Seattleite Tom DesLongchamp. DesLongchamp is basically a puppeteer, doing improv alongside a cohost named Duck. It’s like if you could see the person operating Elmo, and the pair of them had a late night talk show. But also Elmo is a 2-dimensional cartoon. DesLongchamp sat down with Soundside host Libby Denkmann to discuss his show, and why it's so hard to describe. In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Kate Reimann, Founder and CEO of Rogue Wave Toys and Rogue Wave Materials. Rogue Wave Toys are made of compostable plastic based on biopolymers and plant based materials. She is making waves as an entrepreneur and sustainability champion, bringing eight years of industry experience, and a lifetime of advocacy for the planet to her decisions both in business and the way she lives her life. She and Ted discuss the inspiration for Rogue Wave, which all started with her kids and their beach toys that were swept out into the ocean by a wave. It hit her when she scrambled to get them all back onshore, enjoying this interface between land and sea, and using products that were detrimental to its health. She decided then that she had to make a better product, and wanted to make conventional, oil-based plastics obsolete. She shares the challenges she faced in engineering and manufacturing, almost throwing in the towel at times. While searching for a truly compostable, petroleum-free material for her beach toy products, Kate realized her mission had to be bigger than beach toys, and to create the biggest positive impact on the global plastics economy, she needed to make this material available to the world. Kate's ultimate goal is to change the way these products are made and bought. Her innovative, patented, compostable beach toys, made from biopolymers and designed to compost, reflect both her commitment to environmental stewardship and to shifting the materials economy and consumer expectation.
A cold, barren rock in the North Atlantic—isolated, windswept, and lifeless. Perhaps it wasnever meant for human presence. Perhaps the superstitions whispered through generations, warnings of curses and otherworldly forces, weren't just ghost stories to ignore. "Reverb & Seduction" The Portland outfit Federale have been one of the most fascinating and inventive bands of the last twenty years. Led by Collin Hegna, Federale have put out a handful of albums whose affecting instrumental cinemascapes, dark country ballads and psych rock excursions bring to mind a version of and the Dirty Three had they hailed from the verdant and moody Pacific Northwest. The band's new album and sixth overall, Reverb & Seduction is an ambitious and wicked blend of dusty pedal steel, high desert reverb and ominous strings that all add up to a deliciously dark and foreboding feeling that something's going to happen and not only is not going to be good, there's nothing you can do to stop it. With a lineup that boasts members of The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Dandy Warhols, and Rogue Wave, plus a guest appearance by Alex Maas of The Black Angels, Reverb & Seduction is one of the year's very best. As for Hegna, he's a busy fellow--not only does he front Federale, he's been in the Brian Jonestown Massacre for the past two decades, which also makes him the longest serving member of that band, he's a recording engineer and owner of Revolver Studios in Portland where he's produced records by everyone from Roselit Bone to David J. www.collinghegna.com www.federalemusic.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradiocom) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG; @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

It all started with a rogue wave that washed her kids' toys out to sea. Rogue Wave Toys is on a mission to change the plastics industry - and our oceans. Kate is using new plant-based plastics to create beach toys. Kate is a mom of two, Air Force spouse (retired!), rescue animal junkie, bird rehabber, and owner of this innovative beach toy business for almost eight years. When she's not trying to change the plastics industry, Kate loves surfing her local breaks, swimming to Popoia with her friend, beach walking with her dogs, hiking her neighborhood trails, and creating and filming classes for her online spin studio. In 1998, while out on a 56-foot Jim Smith sportfisherman called the Aningha, Johnny Savage and his Capt. Eric Bingham faced a massive rogue wave on the Gulf Stream that wrecked their ship and left them floating alone with nothing but ocean in any direction. This is the story of what might be only the second rogue wave ever documented and how two men fought to survive its aftermath. #902 - Zach Rogue The Zach Rogue Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? So, are you here? That's a question everyone gets asked every once in a while. We like to start every episode of The Paul Leslie Hour with that question because it is you, the listener that is so very important to us. Throughout more than 19 years, there have been so many talented musicians that your host Paul Edward Leslie has been in awe of. One particular singer-songwriter who makes some incredible recordings is Zach Rogue. Many of you know him as the frontman for the band Rogue Wave. When Paul caught up with Zach Rogue, it was to talk about a side project. This interview goes back some years ago. We're pleased to present a digitally remastered version available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, etcetera. What you're about to hear is Zach Rogue of Rogue Wave talking about his other band Release the Sunbird. It's a short chat, and you'll notice an undeniable “telephone” sound. Back when this was recorded, Paul didn't have a nice microphone. He had this self-constructed device that allowed him to record cell phone interviews. We've done our best to clean it up. We have quite a number of interviews in our archives that need to be brought out for everyone to hear. There are expenses involved. You can give yourself and others the gift of stories, by contributing. Just go right here and contribute via PayPal. Okay, this interview needs to get out there into the world. Let's hear the call.
The Gemara speaks cryptically about a majestic wave in the ocean with a white fringe of fire at its crest. Rebbe Nachman warns that the wave, which appears to be so beautiful, is none other than a killer rogue wave, the evil inclination in disguise. The white fire at its crest is a lethal dark-side angel. Today, we learn how to fend off the danger.
Note: This episode originally aired Dec. 20th, 2022. A freak wave strikes Volusia County beaches just hours before the busy Independence Day weekend of 1992. Summer in a college town, stolen TCBY signs, selling popcorn to John Cougar Mellencamp, and meeting one of your best friends in Sociology class after you've spent the night in jail. That's Jim Granato, our first guest. Jim grew up in Unionville, a little town right to the east of Bloomington. He and Josh became fast friends during high school, which is also when Jim found himself at home behind the camera. Jim is now a freelance filmmaker in San Francisco. His films and documentaries have appeared on PBS, including A Day with My Boy: Slug War and D-Tour, a documentary that follows professional drummer and Bloomington native, Pat Spurgeon, as he does daily dialysis and searches for a new kidney while on tour with rock band Rogue Wave. Spurgeon's story is deeply intertwined with those of several other Bloomingtonians. More about Jim: Jim Granato is a self-taught, award-winning filmmaker based in Oakland, California. Born in Chicago, Jim moved to the Bloomington area with his family when he was 5 years old (1978) and his earliest memories there are seeing the movie trucks and lights that were set around town when BREAKING AWAY (released 1979) was being filmed. He grew up fascinated with movies ever since, making up scenarios with childhood friends creating movie drawings and shooting polaroids and occasional super 8 before video cameras were available. In 1991, he started making short films on VHS with a dedicated group of friends that included trick or treaters getting run over, killer puppets, nude serial killers with plenty of the era's local underground music scene sprinkled in between. Jim left Bloomington in 1994. Since 1996, he has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and has directed and produced several short films and music videos. His shorts, A Day With My Boy: Slug War (2014), was licensed by PBS and premiered as part of their series PBS Indies, and Angels (2013) was nominated for a Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. He has made music videos for Sonny & The Sunsets, Rogue Wave, Ramon & Jessica, Pancho-San and The Bobbyteens. D TOUR (2009), which partially takes place in Bloomington, is his first feature film as director and producer. D TOUR won several awards including the Golden Gate Award for Bay Area Feature Documentary from the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Jury Prize for Best Documentary from the Bend Film Festival. D TOUR premiered nationwide on the PBS Emmy award-winning program Independent Lens in November 2009. He is currently working on a second feature film project with underground "budget rock" legends, The Mummies, and has plans to write and direct a feature length project based on growing up in Bloomington. This episode, the Founder of Rogue Wave Marketing Sarah Feldmann talks about the importance of analytics in marketing, which metrics you should be looking for, and why expectation-setting should always be front of mind.Sarah Feldmann worked in journalism before transitioning to marketing and starting her agency Rogue Wave Marketing. Here she worked in every role imaginable from graphic design and website development to copywriting, before hiring others to fill those roles and taking a more managerial role. Here are a few of the topics we'll discuss on this episode of The Consulting Trap: How to help business owners understand their marketing needs. The key differences between a coach and a consultant. The importance of analytics in marketing. How to work with business owners that have a poor product market fit. The value of having contracts with your clients. The metrics to look at in marketing. The importance of expectation setting. Resources: Rogue Wave Marketing Podcast Chef Connecting with Sarah Feldmann: LinkedIn Email Connecting with the host: Brian Mattocks on LinkedIn Brian Mattocks by email Quotables: 03:59 - “Someone can have a gut feeling about a certain type of marketing they should be doing but you can't change what you don't measure so I actually just ran a workshop for some people a couple of weeks ago building their 2023 plans and part of which was sales and marketing and it was funny because the deeper we got into it they're trying to set sales goals and things like that and that starts with understanding not only your target market but what's your conversion rate to figure out how many leads you need to talk to or how many people you need to get to raise their hand so when you go through those types of factual analytical questions then you can map out a plan that really isn't as arbitrary and isn't as gut instinct related, it's actually backed by fact.” 10:22 - “It's expectation setting so any engagement that I have with any client at the very beginning it's establishing how do we want to measure success because for everybody it's different you take a tangible example like building a website how do you know you did it right because there's so many companies that do it differently so I literally have one client that's like I don't need more leads this isn't about that their whole thing is their site is so old that they just want to make sure that their own clients or existing client base can they just can pull up their site find what they need and keep moving, so that's an example of someone who doesn't really care about lead gen they're doing it more as a brand reputation management tool so success for that is user experience whereas another client, it might be lead gen.” 12:51 - “From the very beginning making it clear to the client this is a two-way relationship we have to work together on this because I'm not an employee for a certain company where I'm fully 100 percent all tied in with this company I'm not in their business every single day my role is to help the company outside which adds a lot of value because I'm not numb to the things in front of me that can sometimes happen when you're in the same situation all the time.” 15:30 - “A lot of people I meet a lot of entrepreneurs don't even want to try for rewards, don't even want to do things like that because they're like it's not for you it's for your team and it's amazing how your team will change when they're part of winning something like that and how much that can help elevate your company.” 16:12 - “It's ok if you don't know your why. I read so many posts and see so many videos and all these people talking about their why and it's great if you have it figured out, but sometimes we don't have it all figured out and we don't necessarily know our why and we're still in the process of uncovering that and that's ok to be in the process.

Heather talks about her growing up on an ostrich ranch in Stallion Springs and how her memories of a child on the ranch inspired her to write these books. Heather also shares how she feels she has written the Rogue Wave series of books and believes its what she would have loved to read when was a teen. She has done a tremendous amount of research to make sure the teen novels are period accurate in this fantasy journey into the 1700's. In this episode, I had Brady aka Grhyme back on the podcast making it his third appearance! I like having Brady on for deep conversations and that is EXACTLY what happened. I make a big life announcement, Brady expands on the concept of a Rogue Wave, and we talk about how we are tackling identity issues in our mid-twenties. Yes, it is a longer episode but has an exponential amount of value. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/clmkev/support
Let's face it, if you are an independent musician, you know that the pandemic only added to what was already a difficult profession. However, when no one could go to any concerts, suddenly the big venues, festivals and yes, labels were feeling some of the pain. And interestingly enough, there were those who, like workers who realized that they didn't have to work for the man, decided that they didn't have to commute to see their favorite bands. They could bring bands to them. Especially in the already hard-hit parts of the Midwest, where venues were closing and licensing agents were making sure they closed, the idea of a private concert, with professional sound, lighting, stage and set up could not only be achievable, it could attract similarly minded people who want the intimacy of a private concert, without the hassle of the large festival prices and people. Enter Nate Kula and his wife Susan. Having a band of their own, Rogue Wave, they started building a concert venue outside of the town of Williamsburg, Iowa. This mini-concert venue is larger than a typical house concert and smaller than a typical community festival. Combining the best of both worlds, along with a professional setup, the Kula's with their Raven Wolf Productions are starting to attract national acts and a regional following of their own. Aside from on part of the podcast where Martin and Nate geek out on the Society for the Creative Anachronism, you get a "how-to" primer on putting together your own venue. This may be the best way of saving live independent music in America. Support the show

Want some sobering statistics for your call center? Customer service representatives between ages 20 and 34 stay on the job for an average of just over one year, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Further, the average call center turnover rate is as high as 45% — and that's at least twice the average turnover in other departments, according to the numbers. Call centers are going through a revolution, however. Tools like AI and predictive analytics are driving automation and cost reduction. Are these innovations enough to save the call center and improve retention? Jonathan Brill, HP's former global futurist and author of "Rogue Wave," helped us try to crack the retention conundrum while also discussing call center innovations now and what the future looks like. We caught up with Brill for our latest CX Decoded Podcast.

Ep 372 - A Survival Guide in Rogue Times Guest: Jonathan Brill When COVID-19 hit, the world went into shock. Virtually no one was prepared for the dramatic shift in every aspect of their lives that was cascading down on us. Well, not everyone. In 2015 at a TED Talk, Bill Gates warned a “Spanish flu”-like pandemic was coming. He observed the response to West Africa's 2014 ebola outbreak and the poor response from the rest of the world. Gates rightly predicted a future pandemic was going to hit us. It was as if the world was hit by a “Rogue Wave,” says global futurist Jonathan Brill, the author of a book by that name, in which he points out rogue waves are far more likely to happen than previously understood – that in fact, they are not rogue waves. Rogue quantum harmonic oscillations or modulation instabilities are present in a wide range of media and environments. The key, according to Brill, is to spot the harmonic changes on the horizon that foreshadow their arrival. Spotting the telltale signs is, however, only step 1 in the development of appropriate responses that ensure you can successfully navigate the choppy waters ahead. Brill encourages readers to adopt a “Sherlock Holmes” approach to observing, assessing or deducing and then eliminating the impossible, which means that whatever remains, no matter how mad it seems, it must be the truth. The challenge with this approach is that it is antithetical to the processes most of us individually and as companies employ – those processes were built for less volatile times. Brill says those processes “presume that you can deliver compound growth year after year, if you reduce risk, improve efficiencies, and keep your products up to date.” We invited Jonathan Brill, a Global Futurist and the author of “Rogue Waves,” to join us for a Conversation That Matters about how you can future-proof yourself and your business to survive and profit from radical change.
