Hello, Rock Hard Caucus listeners. Before we started this podcast, I used to do a local music radio show on KRUI in Iowa City called iHearIC Radio. That show has been on life support since the beginning of the pandemic, but I've really been itching to breathe new life into the project. In order to motivate myself to do the show more regularly, I need to consolidate. So, iHearIC Radio is now a monthly feature on the Rock Hard Caucus feed. I hope you like it. For the first episode of this new era of iHearIC Radio, guitarist Dan Padley came over to discuss his own creative path, listen to music from some other local musicians, and most importantly, name some Star Wars planets. Find more of Dan's stuff at http://danpadley.com and support his work at https://patreon.com/danpadley This episode features music by: obviously, Dan Padley (https://danpadley.bandcamp.com) Instant Deth (https://instantdeth.bandcamp.com) The Weepies (https://www.theweepies.com) Jarrett Purdy & Lex Leto (https://jarrettpurdymusic.bandcamp.com/album/have-you-been-the-night) You can find the full iHearIC archives (prior to this podcast episode) at http://ihearic.com https://rockhardcauc.us
First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on June 11th 2023 My regular co-collaborator on the show, WARREN CUMMINGS, has been hosting his CINEMATIC SAUSAGE podcast all about classic movies for the past couple of years, and the thought struck me recently that an enormous amount of the kind of films that he and I both find we enjoy aren't from the sort of time when we would have been able to see them at the cinema, so the only reason that young whippersnappers like us could possibly have come to know that such movies even existed was because they used to turn up on the telly and we would find ourselves drawn to them, whether it was on long wet summer holiday and weekend afternoons, or in those rather special seasons that used to turn up occasionally, and usually at a time when the news was the only other choice of viewing. So our young minds would be exposed to extensive seasons of early evening Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce SHERLOCK HOLMES films, or SCIENCE-FICTION CLASSICS, or GOLDEN TURKEYS and late night HORRORS, and our interests would be shaped by these, alongside the afternoon WEEPIES, COMEDIES, or those stone-cold classics – often WAR FILMS - that tended to cling doggedly to BANK HOLIDAY weekends and become instant traditions in many households. Anyway, WARREN is here to talk about all of those things, as we reminisce about the kind of films we enjoy, and how we first found them, and I hope you enjoy what he had to say as much as I did. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

In episode 5 of A Special Place In Hell, Sarah and Meghan get into some pretty spicy territory: the monoculture of academia (may not be suitable for sensitive listeners or people without PhDs) and the omnipresence of pornography. Citing a recent Washington Post article about the percentage of professors whose parents also held PhDs, Sarah talks about the lack of conservative thinkers on college campuses and wonders how anyone can get a complete education in such an environment. She and Meghan ponder the differences between left-leaning intellectuals and conservative intellectuals, a line of inquiry that inevitably leads to a discussion of female conservatives and whether they are hotter than liberal women. The girls/women then move on to the more staid subject of pornography. Inspired by a July 6 post by Emma Collins on Wesley Yang's Year Zero Substack newsletter, they discuss the psychological effects of early and frequent porn exposure, particularly on young men. They compare and contrast their own earliest exposures to porn (Sarah saw online porn when she was eleven-years-old; Meghan had to make do with furtive peeks at her friends' fathers hidden Playboy stashes) and wonder if the sexual function of all of modern civilization is being wiped out by increasingly hardcore and exaggerated visual stimulation.Bonus Content (only for subscribers, here) is big this week! Sarah and Meghan discuss (wait for it . . .) gender ideology and wonder why they are so obsessed with it. (More accurately, they ask why everyone isn't as obsessed with it as they are.) They discuss (and disagree a bit on) whether there is such a thing as “true trans” and also return to a subject previously discussed on The Unspeakable: which dictators, terrorists and depots are hot.To get access, please consider becoming a paying subscriber!Other highlights:Meghan describes a recent meltdown over the challenges of the creator economy and contemplates going back to (gasp) . . . writing.Sarah explains how, growing up in the 1990s and 2000s, “feminism” was presented as chiefly about sex positivity. This is very different from Meghan's 1970s and 1980s experience. (Also, Meghan doesn't get the choking thing.)Sarah discusses how devoid from reality philanthropy can be. Relevant links:Washington Post: People From Elite Backgrounds Increasingly Dominate Academia Wesley Yang's Year Zero Substack: The Case Against The Sexual Revolution Meghan's oped writing course: She said the wrong dates last week and failed to mention it altogether this week. But please note that Meghan's Zoom workshop in opinion writing will run four consecutive Mondays in August beginning August 8. Application deadline 7/27. More info here. For your second annual Aughtsterion Christmas Mix, Sam and Jordan are switching gears big time from last year's compilation. They're not going on a Lohan Holiday. They're not doing the Christmas Macarena. They're turning almost all the way down and getting indie and emo. Have you heard the bells on Christmas day yet? Have you ever spent a melancholy Christmas by the Bay? Do you want to get weepy with The Weepies? Well good, because they're here with their gently jingling bells and truckloads of soft feelings. It's a very Aughts Xmas, but this time, we're checking most of the excess at the door. Let's cry! Produced by: Jordan Crucchiola Music by: Sam Wineman
Though Micki Balder's been dabbling with music her whole life, it wasn't until 2018 when a friendship's moment of truth unveiled itself in the middle of a Denver coffee shop. She walked home, wrote a song, and has been writing ever since, now a regular at local music venues around her Colorado home. Micki writes from a place of vulnerable storytelling, with people and relationships at the core of her music. She's been compared to modern folk bands like The Weepies and Mipso, along with classic songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon, but she draws inspiration from all over the spectrum — the swing and soul music of her lindy hop days, the earthy folk of Gregory Alan Isakov and Mandolin Orange, the candor and dry humor of John Craigie, or the heartbreak of Sara Bareilles, to name a few. Micki Balder is a folksy singer-songwriter writing sad songs for happy people (and ever so occasionally, happy songs for sad people!). Her music is born from a life-long desire to be a character in a musical, unapologetically singing her feelings for the world through simple and poignant lyrics.Dave sat down with Micki to talk to her about her writing process, alternatives to bridges, using a non-musical friend for creative support, and more! Plus, we each debut a new song. It's another raw and riveting discussion about song craft! For more music, check out https://mickibalder.com/

Whynot Jansveld is a bass player/composer/mastering engineer who has recorded and/or toured with artists such as Richard Marx, Linda Perry, Butch Walker, Gavin DeGraw, The Weepies, Wayne Krantz and many more. Not only is Whynot an incredible musician, he's also an excellent person who has a lot to say about music and what makes it great. Hailing from the Netherlands he is my first international guest, and I think this difference in perspective brought a lot of very interesting conversation out of both of us. In this episode we discuss one of the most popular records of the 80's, Tears For Fears "Songs From The Big Chair," which I must admit I hadn't heard with exception of the huge radio hits that it contains. The music here was so meticulously crafted that it left both Whynot and myself with endless topics of discussion, ranging from the songwriting to production techniques to session musicians. The second record that Whynot chose is a much lesser known work by a American band from Georgia, Mother's Finest. They are the perfect example of a band whose dynamite live performances earned them the finest opening band slots in the world, touring with legends like The Who, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Aerosmith. Although they had some American radio success, their straddling of rock and funk left them in a genre of their own, making it quite difficult to get radio play. But in Europe, they garnered a cult like following from Europeans hungry for both rock and funk music, and Whynot is the perfect example of this. We talk about how this record influenced him and when it became a part of his life, as well as the various genre bending influences of Mother's Finest. This live album, According to Whynot and many of their fans, is the band at the pinnacle of their powers.Check it out, like and subscribe! We'll see you back here next week with another episode of, Album Impact!Instagram:@joshuaraygooch@whynotjansveld
We're very honored to introduce this month's guest. Everybody knows him as the legendary drummer of rock band Fold Zandura, and you might also know of his contributions to The Lassie Foundation, Headphones, and Starflyer 59. Later in his career, He would help break “The Weepies”, bringing world-wide commercial success including 2 songs high on billboard 200! Let's not forget his critically acclaimed solo projects which would grab the attention of The Huffington Post, New York Times, This American Life, and Comedy Central's Colbert Report. Did I mention he has written original scores for popular documentaries? Let's give a nice warm welcome to Frank Lenz...drummer extraordinaire, producer, songwriter, and a personal hero of Joey. Recorded on the day of Minnesota's Primary Election (you'll hear all about it at some point in the podcast), and roughly a week before dat rona related panic really set in, Kevin welcomes guest Page Foster Nelson back to the show. No longer his boss, the two gather in Page's living room (a chance of scenery!) and converse as civilians to further discuss women in music, and where these songs fell into Page's life. Episode 16 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In today's episode, we discussed: "Everything is Free," written by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch; performed by Gillian Welch. Taken from the 2001 Acony Records release Time (The Revelator). "Painting by Chagall," written by Deb Talan and Steve Tannen; performed by The Weepies. Taken from the 2006 Nettwerk Records release Say I Am You. "Thank You," written and performed by Bonnie Raitt. Taken from the self-titled 1971 Warner Brothers Records. "Silver Dagger" is a 'traditional' song; performed by Dolly Parton. Taken from the 1999 Sugar Hill Records release The Grass is Blue. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin; performed by Yola. Taken from the 'deluxe edition' of the Easy Eye Sound release Walk Through Fire. "Being Alive," written by Stephen Sondheim; performed by Adam Driver. Originally from the musical Company, and taken from the 2019 Netflix Original Film Marriage Story.
In today's episode, recorded late in 2017, Steve Tannen, one half of the American indie band The Weepies, and I laugh a lot. Steve shares a story about how being told he sucked at songwriting actually led to him writing one of the Weepies most well-loved songs! He also shares about:- Not killing your songs by overthinking them- Why collaborating with his partner, Deb Talan, works- How "song challenges" have made a difference &- Why persisting in failure, obscurity and success is key.
In this episode of JavaScript Jabber the panel interviews security expert, Kevin A. McGrail. He starts by explaining what security frameworks and what they do. The panel wonders how to know if your developers are capable of self-auditing your security or if you need help. Kevin shares recommendations for companies to look at to answer that question. Aimee Knight explains the hell she has been in making changes to be compliant with CCPA. The panel considers how policies like this complicate security, are nearly impossible to be compliant with and how they can be weaponized. They discuss the need for technical people to be involved in writing these laws. Kevin explains how you can know how secure your systems actually are. He shares the culture of security first he tries to instill in the companies he trains. He also trains them on how to think like a bad guy and explains how this helps developers become security first developers. The panel discusses how scams have evolved and how the same scams are still being run. They consider the importance of automated training and teaching developers to do it right the first time. Finally, they consider the different ways of authentication, passwords, passphrases, sim card, biometrics. Kevin warns against oversharing or announcing vacations. The panel discusses real-world tactics bad guys use. Kevin explains what he trains people to do and look out for to increase security with both social engineering and technical expertise. Red and Dembe have a falling out, Liz tells Red about turning him in, and Dom tells Liz "THE STORY" of who Red IS! The question is, do we the audience believe it? Support the Show! Be sure to #FillTheFedora on Patreon. Case Profile The Brockton College Killer & Rassvet Hour one of this two part event treats us to The Brockton College Killer, a serial killer who stalks coeds. A man, Tobias Carlysle is on trial for his life, accused of the murders. A podcast, THAW, has been advocating for him on his behalf since he was arrested. Kimberly Owens is the host, and when another girl goes missing, Tobias is less likely a suspect. A professor is a major suspect since he has been accused of illicit affairs, but we learn, after Tobias is exonerated, and Kimberly and Tobias bump uglies, that it was Kimberly THE WHOLE TIME! Meanwhile Liz and Dembe play some rochambeau to see who will tell Red the truth about how turned him in. Liz draws the short straw and Red seeks counsel from Katarina's father Dom. Dom explains he did what he did for Katarina out of Love. In the end Red decides love and friendship are more important with Dembe, except Dembe has a different plan. In hour two Ressler comes clean to Liz about his quest for Katarina which leads Liz to Dom, her grandfather. Dom and Liz catch up as he tells Liz the tale of the craziest but bold plan ever. A tale about a friend of the family Ilya Koslov and how he allowed Katarina, who did survive Cape May, to remain dead all these years. It is an origin story of epic proportions, IF you can believe the old KGB operative. Be sure to answer our profiling question of the week: What happened to Katarina after "Reddington" re-emerged? Visit our feedback page to leave a response or call +1 (304) 837-2278. The Brockton College Killer & Rassvet In Pictures Here are a just a few of our favorite scenes from this week. The Music of The Brockton College Killer & Rassvet Jenny is about to become a popsicle thanks to a Killer Podcaster and some tunes from Ethan Burns with his song “King of Secrets” Later in hour one as our jealous girl gets carted away by the cops we hear “Love Doesn’t Last To Long” from The Weepies. Hour Two treats us to some classic INXS with the smash hit “Never Tear Us Apart” question though. Is this an anthem for Katarina and Koslov, or Katarina and Masha? Then we close up the episode with Red questioning Dom to “Catastrophe Anthem” by Clark. Ever wondered what happens behind the privacy curtain in a Coed dorm? When #TravelJunkie Cerulean journeys to Seattle for a friend’s same sex wedding, her modest budget means a shared room at the Green Tortoise Hostel near the infamous Pike Place Market. A reservation error has somehow turned her woman’s room booking into a coed dorm – but she’s extra OK with it when handsome yoga rockstar Scott walks in. They end up canoodling over a globe and a few beers on a hostel-organized pub crawl, nerding out on World Travel. Scott ends her multi-year dry spell with a life lesson on sex and pleasure – and leaves her with new self-knowledge that will stay with her forever. In this episode, we talk about a touching documentary about Batkid, season 5 of a cult classic comedy show, and we listen to music from Florence and the Machine and The Weepies. We listen to a tribute to the life of Anthony Bourdain and learn about a mistake people make in job interviews!
Award-winning singer-songwriter Sarah Sample treats us with an interactive interview in front of a live audience in our Mormon Stories studio—sharing with us songs from her new album, Redwing – which explores her faith journey out of Mormonism. Sarah writes beautiful songs that weave a trail of stories through folk, Americana, and country and have garnered comparisons to Sheryl Crow, The Weepies, and Bonnie Raitt. Redwing, Sample’s sixth album, features more of her cut-to-the-bone storytelling, framed with empathy and compassion, and told with the best singing of Sample’s career. Produced by Sample’s longtime producer Scott Wiley (Elliott Smith, Bonnie Raitt), Redwing came to life over a few weeks of sessions at June Audio in Provo, Utah. Redwing is—among other things and in the grand tradition of albums—a breakup album. But this was no run-of-the-mill romantic heartbreak; Sample’s breakup was spiritual. She left the committed religion of her upbringing (and its by-the-book lifestyle) to chart her own spiritual course, with all the starting over, unmapped question marks, and personal reconstruction that come with it. In the process, she landed in Wyoming where, in her words, “the wide open spaces felt like open arms to me—the endless skies and horizons leave room for anyone to belong.” Redwing tells that story. And more.

Make music with the love of your life. (The Weepies) Sell a million records. Tour the world. Have 3 kids. Get Stage 3 breast cancer. Survive. Now what? “I had to make this record, for me,” says Deb Talan, best known as the girl from the folk pop duo The Weepies. “Marriage, children, being in a band – if you do any of that, at some point you start to wonder what part is still you. And then I got cancer, with a brutal treatment and surgery, and then full recovery. And as lucky as I am with all of that, I just felt lost. This project has been a way to reclaim a part of myself.” The 13 gorgeous songs that make up Deb Talan's new record LUCKY GIRL, released this year on Nettwerk Records, are an exploration featuring Deb's pop sensibility, her signature confessional writing, and of course her unmistakable voice.

Goodbye Blue is an Americana duo featuring Charlotte Kendrick and Dan Rowe. The duo performs melodic and personal Americana-Folk reminiscent of story-telling artists such as The Weepies, Patty Griffin, and John Prine. In addition to their close personal relationship (they’re married), Charlotte and Dan have a longstanding and complimentary musical partnership. The duo previously made three albums together with Charlotte as singer/songwriter and Dan in the producer/arranger role. Now performing as Goodbye Blue, the current songs reflect a time of life that many can relate to, describing the joys and struggles of raising small children. Their current release, Worth the Wait, comes out on March 21st, 2016 on Wondermore Records. For more, click here.
The conversation continues. Does Joshua interact with his family? Why hasn’t Joey visited Joshua’s grave? How has losing her husband made Liz a better person? Are there some areas of weaknesses she still carries, due to the tragedy? Read some more about Liz on her blog: http://lizmiller2.blogspot.com/ Songs used in this episode: "Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole "What Plays in My Head" by Matt & Toby "Terrible Love" by the National "Sirens" by the Weepies
Sirens is the first album in five years from this Married duo and the songs are inspired by Deb Talans struggle with stage 3 breast cancer and her eventual triumph over it.
Kelli Rae Powell is the tiny ukulele-wielding, redheaded stepchild of Billie Holiday and Johnny Cash. Whether she’s growling out wry ruminations or purring her way through a drinkaby (a lullaby-meets-drinking song of her own device), she delivers the kind of consistently literate lyrics that once prompted Tommy Ramone to call her a poet. The Iowa-bred performer arrived in New York City in 2000, and after making a name for herself in the city’s underground ukulele cabaret scene, released 2006’s “The Scandalous Accounts of My Youth,” and 2009’s “New Words For Old Lullabies” (both on Firecracker Records). She has been listed as a “Rising Star: Folk” in iTunes Essentials, alongside Bon Iver, Joanna Newsom and The Weepies, and New York City’s Deli Magazine wrote that her talents place her at the “tip of the NYC ukulele solo singer songwriter movement.” Powell’s forthcoming CD, “Live At Jalopy,” produced by Terry Radigan and recorded at Jalopy Theatre and School of Music in Red Hook, Brooklyn, showcases a confident artist at the height of her game. 00:00:00 - When Ryan claims that lobsters are immortal, only one man can be relied upon to deliver the hard truths: Zen Faulkes! Zen breaks into the show to tell us all about this immortality meme and his efforts to combat it. Be sure to check out his blog NeuroDojo and his e-book Presentation Tips. 00:30:08 - Lobsters live in the drink, so we decide to have some. Moving his way through a gift given by Ryan, Patrick cracks open a Cropduster Mid-American IPA. Kelly enjoys a Cabernet Sauvingon from Bogle Vineyards, complete with Patrick's approval. And Ryan heartily enjoys his Petrus Aged Pale. 00:35:45 - Trailer Trash Talk has to tackle some troubling issues about animals in captivity after seeing the troubling footage in the trailer for the documentary Blackfish. 00:51:07 - Patrick presents a new study about how freshwater systems may have survived the K/T extinction better than the marine world. Take that dinosaurs! 01:10:27 - PaleoPOWs survive better in freshwater too, not that anyone bothered to ask. Patrick thanks Kevin D. for his generous donation. Thanks, Kevin! Ryan read an e-mail from Aaron D. suggesting we conduct an online pub quiz potentially titled Science... war off. All we need now is a 36-hour day. And Kelly rounds out the segment with a 5-star iTunes review left by the_HAL9000. I wonder if he knows Ben? Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts! 00:00:00 - Because according the media, 3 disparate events make a global trend, the CDC had to come out and assure everyone that we are not at the beginning of a zombie apocalypse. That being said, no reason you shouldn't prepare anyways, right? 00:17:08 - Jacob enjoys a Dark Night in Munich, a Longshot beer from Sam Adams. Ryan has a Stateside Saison from Maryland. And Ben kicks back with mango nectar from Egypt. 00:23:04 - The Americans try to educate the Canadian on US history, which is hindered by the subject of this week's Trailer Trash Talk, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. 00:35:24 - Mars-One wants to send people to Mars using reality TV and your money. Sound like a bad idea? It probably is. We break down what might be going with these folks, including why they seem to have the support of Nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft. For background on exactly why getting to Mars isn't easy check out our interview with Charles Doarn in episodes 69 and 70. 01:01:56 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like one way trips to space. WORTH IT! Jacob has an e-mail from Limnality, of Scienceseeker.org, hoping we keep up the good work as they listen through the back catalog. Ben has a voicemail from Tom asking for some nuclear clarification after listening to episode 20 of The Weekly Weinersmith. The answer might need a bigger show, but we do our best. And finally Ryan has an e-mail from Zachary G., a hiker of the Appalachian Trail who appreciates the company we provide. Will and Barrett discuss the latest releases by Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, the Weepies, and Interpol, and Barrett's huge CD collection.
"Be My Thrill" is this Married duo's third album and their first since their now two year old son was born and their joy as new parents is named evident throughout.
Part one of this two-part episode finds John and Scott ranting and raving about everything from geek culture, to obsessive behavior, to the joys of Netflix Streaming. 00:03:35 - John feels that Whedonesque is not being realized to its fullest potential, and worries that he's missing out on several news items, at the discretion of some questionable moderation. (UPDATE: The concerns of this issue have since died down considerably, making much of this rant more obsolete than before.) 00:24:11 - Yes, the rant was that long. This leads to another rant, one that's been discussed before. The Cult of Whedon, and how in some cases, the more overzealous contributors can ruin it for other fans. There is also more talk about the ups and downs of Dollhouse. 00:37:24 - Scott and John share their thoughts on Seasons 1 and 2 of Felicia Day's award-winning web series, The Guild. Spoilers abound, so beware. The idea of online gaming and the fantasy genre are also discussed. 00:50:57 - When writing creepy, stalker humor, how far is too far? 01:00:52 - Felicia Day has a Celebrity Music Playlist on Canadian iTunes, proving once again that Canada rocks! 01:04:24 - Scott checked out Big Fan through Netflix Watch Instantly. The Wrestler and Patton Oswalt's star power are also mentioned. 01:15:32 - Scott also watched the off-the-wall "comedy", Good Dick. 01:23:02 - Finally, Scott closes out the show by discussing the film, World's Greatest Dad. The following artists can be heard in this episode: Kevin Smith, Vampire Weekend, The Submarines, L7, Black Sabbath, Air, Cassettes Won't Listen, Stereophonics, Headlights, Joshua Radin, Paul Minor, David Guetta & Akon, Metric, The Smiths, Why?, FC Kahuna, Stars, U2, The Weepies, Hem, Belle & Sebastian, Grandaddy and Regina Spektor.
The Weepies - Antarctica - This husband/wife singer/songwriter duo will release their latest album, Hideaway, next week, but I've heard one song, and I like it quite a bit. I just love Deb Talen's voice, and I hope you will, too. She & Him - This Is Not A Test - She is actress Zooey Deschanel and he is singer/songwriter M. Ward. Together, they create a magical step back into sixties pop and country (lots more magic than Zooey's appearance in Tin Man last year.) Sarah Mac Band - Open Fire - When I first heard the song on my Paste sampler, I thought it was Lisa Loeb making some sort of comeback. Not so. The Raconteurs - Hold Up - Jack White's side project released a follow-up to their fab debut, Broken Boy Soldiers, last month. I just got around to cracking it open, and it's a gem. Consolers of The Lonely reminds me just how much I miss blues-based rock bands and how thankful I am that some of the younger guys won't give up on it. R.E.M. - Living Well Is The Best Revenge - Accelerate is the best R.E.M. release since Automatic For The People. Yeah, it was a long dry spell, wasn't it? This album rocks!
Anne schwärmt die ganze Sendung nur rum: Zuerst vom Podcastday, dann von den Weepies und dann ganz doll von Walter Moers' "Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher". Alle jetzt Walter Moers Bücher kaufen.
