Pues nace un nuevo proyecto que espero que me aguantéis al otro lado porque me quedaba otra de mis pasiones culturales por unir a este podcast de “Críticos en Serio”: La música. Con una diferencia. Nunca me he especializado en ello.

On Friday's show: After a crucial vote, there may be some major changes coming to Houston ISD, including a longer school year. And we learn how a recent anti-gang initiative resulted in 36 arrests. Also this hour: History is rife with technological advancements -- and the unintended consequences they create. We consider recent examples of how technology may help but also hinder us as we learn about efforts to teach the next generation of engineers here in Houston the importance of ethical development of technology. Then, Neil Armstrong's former home is for sale, and The Great Wall of China becomes the latest historic structure to be defaced. This week's group of “non-experts” discusses those stories on The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. And singer/songwriter Joshua Radin talks about his post-high school gap year backpacking trip through Europe that came about 18 years late and inspired music on his new album. He performs at The Heights Theater this weekend.

Singer-songwriter Joshua Radin didn't think he was going to be a musician. Certainly, he loved art and studied drawing and painting at Northwestern. But after college he worked as a teacher, screenwriter and other odd jobs.  In his late 20s, Radin's father bought him a guitar and things slowly came together. In 2004, actor Zach Braff—a friend since college—helped Radin get his song "Winter" on the NBC show Scrubs. Ultimately, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence cherry-picked several of Radin's other songs for the show which would also go on to appear on Radin's debut record, We Were Here.   And off Radin went.  He recently joined us on The Load Out Music Podcast, and over his career thus far, he has since tallied more than one billion streams. Radin's single, “I'd Rather Be With You,” was certified gold, his music has appeared in over 200 films, television series, and commercials; and Ellen Degeneres loves his music so much that Radin played her wedding. In recent years, Radin decided a change of scenery was necessary and essentially left his life behind, traveling with nothing more than the essentials (and enough tools to be creative). He decided to live somewhat of a vagabond lifestyle overseas while also making stops to record new material in places such as Stockholm, Paris, and Lisbon. The result is his forthcoming album (out August 4) Though the World Will Tell Me So, Vol 2, which follows Vol 1—also written in Europe—that came out last year.  Radin recently released the EP's latest single “Man Of The Year,” which finds him exploring his personal struggles with intimacy and vulnerability.  “I build walls around myself,” he said, “Always terrified of being hurt, making myself too vulnerable, which is I'm sure why the music I write is the exact opposite—I try to create a world in which I want to live.” So enjoy the latest episode of The Load Out music podcast with singer-songwriter Joshua Radin. It's a great one!

This week Singing Teachers Talk takes a deep dive into the songwriting process with artist, songwriter and vocal coach Allie Moss. The New Orleans-based songwriter reveals how the creative process works for her and shares some top writing tips. Allie's music has featured in Charmed, Batwoman, and Netflix's Virgin River. She also co-leads education platform Thinking Outside the Blocks.     KEY TAKEAWAYS There is no one defining skill that you need to be a songwriter, but it helps if you're good at storytelling and able to allow yourself to be vulnerable. Try reverse engineering the structure of your favourite song. Try ghost writing and counting the syllables. Then write something with the same number of syllables in each line. Keep the hook in the same place and rewrite it in your own words.  The melody is not more important than the lyrics, nor are the lyrics more important than the melody. There is no one-size-fits-all formula for writing a song. Just experiment and follow your feelings.  Sometimes writing songs is just for you. It can be a deeply personal way of processing emotion, rather than being intended to be shared with the rest of the world.  Focus on getting your emotions out on the page. You can spend time and edit later. While the emotion is there you should use that without trying to filter it down.  BEST MOMENTS ‘I got bitten by the bug of making something out of nothing and being that creative spark'  ‘Songwriting can feel like a little bubble where you're alone with your thoughts and fears'  ‘Pause and assess your skills with kindness and honesty'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training  Guest Website: alliemoss.com thinkingoutsidetheblocks.com/ patreon.com/alliemoss   Social Media: @alliemoss @thinkingoutsidetheblocks   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Allie's artist examples: Joni Mitchell, Sia, David Bazan, Bon Iver, Coldplay, Joseph, The Beatles   Blog on The Genius Myth: https://thinkingoutsidetheblocks.com/listentothisrevisionisthistory Recommended Podcast: https://www.pushkin.fm/episode/hallelujah Music Technology Tools: Pro Tools; Logic Pro; Garageband; Splice Yamaha Reface CP    ABOUT THE GUEST  New Jersey-born Allie Moss is an artist, songwriter, sideman, and vocal coach. We had the pleasure of interviewing Roses & Revolutions over Zoom video! Indie-pop duo Roses & Revolutions has just unveiled ‘Midnight Monsters,' their gorgeous and expansive new EP, out today via Nettwerk Records. Glide Magazine premiered the EP's final single “When The Moment's Gone” this week, calling it “a scorching, boot-stomping rock anthem that is soulful and hard-hitting.” “'When The Moment's Gone' is about the sickening realization that something really important has just passed you by,” the band explains. “It's about reliving that feeling daily. You're on repeat. This is the only song on the EP that we were able to 'test out' at live shows. The audience's reaction and excitement really pushed us to record it, and it was actually the first song we finished for the EP.” The songs on ‘Midnight Monsters' were written in the middle of the night, in the strange hours before dawn when the world seems to stand still. There's a quality of magical realism in each of the six tracks, where synth and analog sounds mix to create something otherworldly. But the album could only have been written during this past year, as the world experienced a collective warping of time and place. Inspired by the dystopian quality of quarantine and the emotional demons that hit hardest at night, the band created a sweeping album that blurs fantasy and reality with a sense of timelessness and escape that unfolds like a short film noir. The premiere of “When The Moment's Gone” followed the release of the EP's lead single “Lower Than Low,” featuring gorgeous, stacked harmonies that beautifully captured the utter stillness found in day's earliest hours. Roses & Revolutions is comprised of longtime collaborators Alyssa Coco (vocals) and Matt Merritt (guitar). Based in Rochester, NY, they first connected through music, playing in various bands together until it became apparent that there was a special creative alchemy between the two. They gained traction with their hit single “The Pines,” leading to 11 million+ streams, a headlining tour, and syncs from Netflix, ABC, NBC, and more. But when lockdown threatened to deflate the momentum they had built, the duo took the opportunity to explore a new way of making music, turning their dark experience into a thing of beauty.  Roses & Revolutions have just announced a string of tour dates in March 2022, opening for the acclaimed, gold-selling singer/songwriter Joshua Radin. How many interviews have you listened to where an artist has said they picked up an instrument as a kid, and they knew from that moment that they wanted a career in music? Well, that is not Joshua Radin's story. Joshua didn't pick up a guitar until he was 30, having spent his 20s trying to make a living as a painter and scriptwriter. But from the moment he started strumming on a guitar, things started to happen very quickly. Within a few months he'd written his first song, “Winter”, and not long after it was used in a key scene in an episode of the TV show Scrubs. And just like that, Joshua's music career was off and running. Fast forward to 2021 and Joshua's just released his ninth studio album, The Ghost and the Wall, and has spent the past 15 years touring the world and racking up more than one billion streams. We talk about his life and career in this interview.

Joshua Radin's new album "The Ghost and the Wall" dares us to be hopeful in a post pandemic world, and I have to say it works. The album was born out of the pandemic and getting to speak to Josh about his creative process over the past year and a half is inspiring. Josh talks about the loss of a close friend, Broadway star, Nick Cordero, and how it affected his pod and what they did to protect each other during the pandemic. We also dive into the music industry, how he got his start in it, and his first song "Winter" premiering on one of the most popular episodes of Scrubs at the time during it's 3rd season. He also recalls his first live gigs, utilizing myspace, and his first time being star struck by Bob Dylan. A song subdues and soothes even the roughest seas. After sixteen years, eight albums, and hundreds of shows, Joshua Radin still treats music as an antidote to any ailment. The gold-selling, Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter finds healing in between waves of acoustic eloquence and dyed-in-the-wool Americana storytelling. On his ninth full-length TheGhost And The Wall [Nettwerk], the troubadour continues a cycle of catharsis meant to be shared among any and all receptive hearts.Since 2004, he's affected countless listeners with palpable transparency. As a result, he's sold over 1 million records, generated 1 billion-plus total streams, and garnered a gold plaque for the single “I'd Rather Be With You.” Landing north of 150 film, television, and commercial syncs, his voice courses throughout the zeitgeist. Among many highlights, First Ladies Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden personally handpicked “Brand New Day” for a commercial in support of the troops. In addition to memorable performances on Ellen, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, and Today Show, he famously serenaded avowed super fan Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi during their wedding. Beyond sold out headline shows on four continents, he has also performed alongside Ed Sheeran, Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Imogen Heap, and The Script. Plus, he remains a committed philanthropist, supporting charities such as Little Kids Rock and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), among others. After returning home from a European Tour in support of his 2019 album Here, Right Now, Joshua initially planned to hunker down, write, and record a new album. Nevertheless, the circumstances of the Global Pandemic complicated the plan…That's where producer Jonathan Wilson [Father John Misty, Conor Oberst, Dawes] comes in. One 30-minute phone conversation later, Joshua and Jonathan set about making The Ghost And The Wall remotely. Despite both being in Southern California, they opted to transfer files back and forth, crafting the entire record through the wire. Jonathan laid down the instrumentation in Topanga Canyon, and Josh cut vocals in the Hollywood Hills. Within a month, they had completed ten tracks. He paves the way for the album with the single “Better Life.” Over understated acoustic guitar, lilting vocals detail the journey of “an immigrant coming to this country and seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time.” Folk-style picking and hushed delivery relay the anxiety of the search for “the one” on “Make It Easy.”Then, there's “Fewer Ghosts.” A personal favorite, Joshua comes to an eye-opening realization cemented in confessional lyrics and soft tones. In the end, Joshua finds a way to heal once again on The Ghost And The Wall.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Brandon Jenner over Zoom video! Brandon Jenner's music feels like a lot of different things—often all at once. In some ways, it's like your childhood best friend disclosing an important truth by the glow of a beach bonfire. In other ways, it's like the moment you stop worrying about what other people think and can laugh and smile anywhere without apology. However, the Los Angeles-born singer, songwriter, and producer describes what his music feels like best.“I try to make it feel like a warm, cozy blanket,” he laughs. “I hope I'm able to be that way in life as well!”'Music always gave him this warmth. With a singer-songwriter mom, he went from “being a fly on the wall” in his stepdad's studio (just Google his stepfather!) to developing his own relationship with music when Ben Harper's “Forever” got him through his first true breakup. After a pair of EPs and major syncs as one half of Brandon & Leah, he launched his solo career with the independent Burning Ground EP in 2016. The title track amassed over 26.5 million Spotify streams as he claimed coveted real estate on popular playlists such as Your Favorite Coffeehouse, License to Chill, and more. In between touring with the likes of Rachael Yamagata and Joshua Radin, he unveiled the Face The World EP [2018], Plan On Feelings EP [2019], and So Childish EP [2020]. After a whirlwind of gigs around the world, marriage, and the birth of his twin sons, he personally wrote, recorded, and produced his Nettwerk debut EP, Short of Home, in the middle of the Global Pandemic.Coupling life changes with a lifetime devoted to music thus far, he opened up like never before.“I think I've gotten better at giving myself the license to be truly vulnerable,” he admits. “It's about what the songwriter is willing to let the listener in on. I'm not trying to overcompensate for the blessings in my life anymore. I'm writing about the changes in my life. I wanted to go back to what got me to play music in the first place, which is singer-songwriters with songs that make you think and feel deeply. For the first time in a long time, I have a label partner too, and I'm really excited about that.”He introduces Short of Home with “Something About You.” Faintly plucked acoustic guitar wraps around his intimate delivery as he delivers a love letter to his wife.“The lyrics just seemed to roll out like a runaway train,” he says. “It was an overwhelming feeling that brought me to tears. I'm so happy and grateful. It captures my first impression of my wife and my love for her.”Originally penned in some “hipster-y hotel in New York,” slide guitar echoes underneath dusty verses on “There You Are” as his high-register hypnotizes on the hook.“It's mostly about how society forces us to lose sight of the fact the only thing we have is the present,” he admits. “We spend so much of our time planning for the future—which causes stress—that we spend very little time in the present. It's a reminder we have lungs that work and hearts that beat. You've got to silence the noise of society and be in the moment.”“Give It All You've Got” rides along on upbeat guitar towards an affirmation to “live life without filtering yourself through the opinions of others.” Then, there's “Life For Two.” Written at the request of a dying fan in Denmark, he gives her two children “a song about what their mom went through.” Everything culminates on “Wolves.” A piano-laden rumination, he croons a heartbreaking refrain, “No, you're not special to me anymore.”“It's the moment when you're over someone,” he comments. “It was written with a lot of emotion because it's what I was going through at the time. It's honest. I'm not trying to do anything other than express myself. I found myself in an energetic shift that needed to take place.”In the end, Brandon Jenner's music really feels like home.“In the past, I just wanted people to respect me as a musician,” he leaves off. “With my last name, it was something I was hung up on. I don't care so much about that anymore. What I really want is for somebody to feel the emotion I did—to feel better, safer, more inspired, and like the world has meaning. I went through so many challenges and changes and found relief. If you do as well, it's all worth it.”We want to hear from you! San Francisco born producer, engineer, mixer, musician, and songwriter Eric Robinson's first job in the music business was given to him by legendary Grammy-winning producer Steve Lillywhite. He never anticipated a short email to his hero would find him recording Trey Anastasio of Phish and watching Lillywhite mix U2 at the age of 19. Following his summer in Vermont and New York, Eric landed an internship at Royaltone Studios in LA. This quickly turned into a position as a runner, and not long after Eric was assisting on sessions for Barenaked Ladies, Ricky Martin, and Lifehouse with producers Ron Aniello, Mario Caldato and more. After 3 years at Royaltone, Eric left in 2005 to go freelance. In addition to recording, Eric was also getting busy as a sideman in 2006, playing guitar and keys for notable acts in the burgeoning Hotel Cafe scene such as Cary Brothers, Sara Bareilles, Joshua Radin and Jessie Baylin. This lead to international touring, television appearances and a live concert film with Sara Bareilles. On the studio side, Eric simultaneously struck up a working relationship with producer/songwriter Marshall Altman and the two had immediate success. The first album they worked on together was Kate Voegele’s debut for Interscope/MySpace Records. Eric played all the keyboards, most of the guitars, mandolin, accordion, and banjo on the record, as well as recording and mixing it. Kate’s record sold 250,000 copies in the US and the songs were licensed extensively on TV. Next up came Matt Nathanson’s album Some Mad Hope, which Eric recorded with Altman. The album spawned the double-platinum single, “Come On Get Higher.” Then came albums with Natasha Bedingfield, Trevor Hall, William Fitzsimmons, Walker Hayes, Rosi Golan, Bethany Dillon and Adema, spanning genres from pop to folk to country and metal. After establishing Marlay Studios in North Hollywood in 2010, Eric worked with artists such as Taylor Swift, Sia, Michelle Branch, Natasha Bedingfield, The Milk Carton Kids, Carney, Aqualung, Dan Wilson, P!nk, Rachael Yamagata, Brooke Fraser, Switchfoot, and Boyd Tinsley from Dave Matthews Band. Along the way, Eric gained valuable experience working alongside hit producers such as Ryan Tedder, John Alagia, Dan Wilson and Charlie Peacock. In 2014, Eric was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year for his engineering work on Taylor Swift’s “Red” album. Eric focuses on mixing music and film score in stereo and 5.1 surround and producing/co-writing with artists. Recent projects include OneRepublic’s Netflix “Once in a Lifetime” in 5.1 surround, indie band The Lighting, the main title to the Netflix show, “The Haunting of Hill House”, country artist Nora Collins and pop band Castro. His story is a great reminder, especially for those at the starting stages, that a musical career is not just about big gestures and big decisions. It's built with the succession of little events that might seem inconspicuous at first, but end up adding up and can lead us to so many great opportunities and accomplishments. Whether it's a chance meeting, a conversation, or being exposed to something new - all of this can open a world of new possibilities. Good Morning/Evening/Night,             What a punch to the gut. I loved Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s work. I’d go drop 14 bucks to see anything he was in. Such a discerning eye and open nerve. He brought such pathos, such angst. I remember a few years ago while on tour in Hershey, Pennsylvania  a few of us went to see Before the Devil Knows Your Dead at a tiny art-house movie theater roughly the size of a mall bathroom. What he brought to his role in that movie unsettled me, just as he always unsettled me. He made the awkward, tense, virile, prosaic, and despotic parts that we all share into crystalline moments to be studied. His work made us feel the weight of the absurdities of our modern life, to give credence to the flaws and sleek grace in equal measure. Fearless. I wanted to be more like him.    I had no idea about his struggle with drugs. I’ve been lucky enough to avoid heroin and other serious pitfalls, but I haven’t been a complete stranger to addiction. I’m not going to sit and proselytize about the dangers of our choices and drugs. I don’t pretend to know anything about being strung-out on opiates. I have however at times wanted to die, or at least not feel anything anymore. Like something in my brain’s chemistry had ripped off my eyelids and torn open my chest and all I could do was burn and let everything collide through my me until I found a way to numb. I can sympathize with the need to turn the volume down.    We ask so much of ourselves as artists. We take the most sensitive people in the whole of existence, carefully hone them into the most intricate of instruments with years of study and training, then set the wolves of industry upon them. You have to have the mental fortitude of Job to withstand the atrocities of success. I’ve only known a few people who’ve navigated it to some success, and they are my touchstones.    This week on the podcast we have singer/songwriter/former screenwriter Joshua Radin.  I’ve known Josh for a few years now and it was good to sit down at (not a bar) and talk at length about his whirlwind entrance into the music industry, floundering broke in New York City, and the power of timing to help your success. This is the first of my mobile interviews I’ve done with the zoom h4n and I had a bit of technical difficulties with it, i.e. lost the first 20 minutes of the interview. So while kicking myself on the ride back from his place i struggled to remember and write down the things we covered that didn’t make the recording. I’ll go through them in the intro. Suffice it to say, I think I’m going to run that mobile recorder through its’ paces a few more times before I use it again.    Back to the other thing for a second.    we are here for such a very short period of time. I know it hurts, I know it feels like too much. But let’s not risk making our lives even shorter, or by that same token, missing it completely by means of escape.

(UPDATE: The concerns of this issue have since died down considerably, making much of this rant more obsolete than before.) 00:24:11 - Yes, the rant was that long. This leads to another rant, one that's been discussed before. The Cult of Whedon, and how in some cases, the more overzealous contributors can ruin it for other fans. There is also more talk about the ups and downs of Dollhouse. 00:37:24 - Scott and John share their thoughts on Seasons 1 and 2 of Felicia Day's award-winning web series, The Guild. Eric Diaz, from the video podcast Geekscape brings a unique perspective to the show this week. Lots of frank, dividing subject matter gets covered here in this overstuffed episode, so proceed with caution. Not suitable for children, unless you're really open and casual with your kids. Like, seriously.00:02:46 - Eric is singing the praises of Mad Men. It won some important Emmy awards, so that's gotta count for something, right?00:09:12 - John desperately wants to check out the special features on the Spaced DVDs, even though he's already seen and enjoyed the show.00:11:48 - John is experiencing a love/hate relationship with season one of Eli Stone. The conversation turns into talk of the Green Lantern movie.00:18:47 - Breaking news, Tim Burton was a hired gun on his remake of Planet Of The Apes, which ruined the movie.00:20:28 - John and Eric discuss fan boy-submitted, great movies lists. Popularity goes head to head with actual quality.00:26:00 - Back to Eli Stone. Season two will be arriving soon, but John is almost certain the show had been canceled. Confusion ensues.00:29:55 - John brings up Fringe. It's entertaining, but the problems are still there. This leads into some Joshua Jackson love.00:42:36 - If a show taps an idea really well, should no one else be allowed to expand on it? This leads to talk about Bones. The show has jumped the shark, so John has dropped it. Again.00:46:27 - There's talk of the season three premiere of Heroes. It's not pretty. Thankfully, Hiro manages to escape more or less unscathed.00:56:36 - John gives his play by play on Heroes through his Twitter posts.01:06:24 - John continues his thoughts on season one of Six Feet Under.01:13:45 - Eric explains the difference between sexual behavior and sexual orientation, using the new Buffy comics and the television series as reference material.01:24:48 - Chasing Amy comes up in a discussion of the validity bisexuality.01:34:27 - Buffy gets blamed for the decrease in female membership in the Church Of England.
