Verifier Andy's betrayal has borne fruit! The heretic renegades of the Cinemania Society are forced to continue their 12th conclave, having been strapped into chairs Clockwork Orange-style and forced to watch a kooky and obscure British satire from 1989, "How to Get Ahead in Advertising," featuring Classic Loki portrayer, Richard E. Grant. All nefariousness contains the seeds of its own demise however, and it Scrutinizer Zacharia may be having a massive allergic reaction (à la Akira) to whatever it was Andy put in everyone's tea... Jazz musicians Alicia Kidd (guitar and vocals) and Hank Trenton (double bass) start off our Thursday Heritage Concert Autumn series programme in honour of ANZAC day - to acknowledge those lost, and the sacrifices made. Taking a New Zealand perspective, Acrylic will perform love songs written during the war, such as “Pōkarekare Ana;” uncovering the stories often forgotten with such well-known tunes. Alongside this they will also perform typical songs from the time, such as “Pack Up Your Troubles,” arranged in their unique jazz style. They will explore the introduction of jazz into European society by the African-American armed forces drawing parallels with the experiences of the Maori Battalion on the battlefields. Through this remembrance concert Acrylic aspire to bring hope, as well as reflect the real grief associated with war and continued themes relevant to our society today, while bringing an enjoyable experience to listeners through their sensitivity and skill. Acrylic are part of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's “Aspiring Musicians” programme

A few episodes ago, we explored the beginnings of modern science-fiction with a review of Fritz Lang's 1927 epic Metropolis. This time we hop into the Wayback Machine for a trip to 1920 and Robert Wiene's Expressionist breakthrough film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which did the same thing for the horror genre of film that Metropolis did for sci-fi. We'll also have some fun at the expense of the Nazi party and listen to me rant at length about the bargain-basement silent film DVD racket...Episode #007 - The Cabinet of Dr. CaligariMusic:"The Mysterious House" - Russ Huddleston & Robert Smith - "Manos" The Soundtrack of Fate"Into The Trap" - John Williams - Return of the Jedi Original Soundtrack"The Other Side of the Door" - Kevin Macleod - www.incompetech.com"Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag" - Felix Powell"Reeperbahn" - Tom Waits - Alice"Springtime for Hitler" - Mel Brooks & John Morris - The Producers Original Sountrack"Aftermath" - Kevin Macleod - www.incompetech.com"Living Dead Girl" - Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxehttp://archive.org/download/EPISODE007THECABINETOFDRCALIGARI/EPISODE_007_THE_CABINET_OF_DR_CALIGARI.mp3
This week we finally round-up Unwind Brighton, which took place on 12-13 July 2014 in the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange. There is also a run-down of the progress of the #lushpodkal Lush knitalong, by Tin Can Knits. I'm using Blacker Yarns Blacker Swan yarn for this - use the code LUSH5634 for 10% discount until 14 September 2014. There's also an interview with the ever fabulous Clare Devine of Yarn and Pointy Sticks designs and George of Yarn Garden, about yarn, the universe and everything. George is in no way like Heisenberg of Breaking Bad, it would seem, but he does like a slice of passion cake. Possibly not as much as Clare enjoys lockable stitch markers. Listen in to figure out exactly what I'm talking about. Shownotes are available at www.shinybees.com and music is provided by Adam and the Water Boys, via Music Alley.
