Over the past forty years, Gina Gershon has remained a beloved actress while constantly pushing herself as an artist, adding to her astonishing and diverse resumé. Since her small, breakout performance in Pretty in Pink, Gershon has been best known for her roles in movies (including Bound, Showgirls, Face/Off, The Insider) and television (including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Riverdale, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Assassin), but her career, and community, began as a musician and dancer. She performed at Carnegie Hall, recorded albums, and toured the United States, playing her jaw harp with Sting, Laurie Anderson, Joan Baez, Paul Simon, and Herbie Hancock. While she has not yet performed with her close friend Bob Dylan, they were sparring partners when Gershon took up boxing. On the stage, Gershon has worked with David Mamet, and performed in Sam Mendes's Cabaret and the Tony Award-winning Boeing-Boeing. In 2007, Gershon took on a new artistic practice, publishing the children's book Camp Creepy Time with her brother Dann. She later released her first work of nonfiction, In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind, the true story of Gershon's search for her runaway cat. Today on Script Apart – Harris Dickinson: star of films like Babygirl and Triangle of Sadness, John Lennon in the upcoming Beatles biopics from Sam Mendes, and now, a formidable presence on the other side of the camera too. Urchin, the new drama written and directed by Harris, is a feature debut that “I cannot escape and I cannot forget,” to quote the Atomic Kitten song that plays in a pivotal scene. It's a story that hit close to home for me, quite literally. Harris lives kinda down the street from where I'm from. He shot a lot of Urchin in locations I used to tread every day before moving to LA earlier this year. And as we discuss in this spoiler conversation, we've both volunteered with local organisations a stone's throw from each other, providing support to unhoused people in east London. In fact, it was while doing this volunteer work one day that Harris conjured the idea for Urchin – a story about a young man sleeping rough in Hackney, struggling with addiction and poverty, played by Frank Dillane. If that sounds like a gritty social realist drama you've seen before, well, you're only half right. Urchin takes raw ingredients from that cinematic tradition and adds big, strange, lyrical leaps that make you feel the isolation and alienation that Frank's character, Mike, feels. It all leads up to an ending that's spine-tingling. In the conversation you're about to hear, Harris and I break down key scenes and characters from the film, the real-life problems he hopes the film helps draw attention towards – and of course, Atomic Kitten, because how could we not? The battle for Warner Bros. Discovery is seeing a new champion enter the ring, with Netflix making some moves to put their own bid in for the studio's properties. According to Reuters, the streaming pioneer engaged with investment bank Moelis & Co. in order to prepare an offer. Ironically, this is the same bank that worked with David Ellison at Skydance to take over Paramount whose first bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery was rejected. It was the worst weekend at the box office this year, with ticket sales coming in at just $52.4 million. This also makes it the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, excluding theater closures due to COVID in 2020. While new film Regretting You took in a respectable $50 million, Black Phone 2 really has the crown from the weekend having now brought in $104 million globally - another huge win for horror this year. Yorgos Lanthimos' new film Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is sitting at a small $11.1 million globally after breaking into more theaters.Both Scream 7 and Stranger Things Season 5 released trailers recently. Stranger Things' official trailer showed us a bit more of what to expect from that property and Scream 7, which releases on February 27, 2026, gave us a glance at the returning original cast members of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and David Arquette. As we discussed last week, Stranger Things will release in three parts on holiday weekends, four episodes on November 26, three episodes on Christmas Day, and the finale on New Year's Eve.A 'Conjuring' prequel film is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct. Franchise veterans Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior “Conjuring” films, 2023's “The Nun II” and this September's “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” are on board to pen the screenplay.After landing the rights to turn one of the world's biggest video games into an epic movie, Paramount has now landed two A-list filmmakers to develop it. The film will once again be written, directed and produced by the same team behind 2023's “Godzilla Minus One.” Currently, there are no plot details, but the studio is currently targeting a release date in late 2026.Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are going back to the desert for The Mummy 4. The film will be directed by the duo known as Radio Silence, composed of Martin Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillett, who directed 2019's Ready or Not.

He received the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir for Jarhead.  A feature film of Jarhead, directed by Sam Mendes and featuring Jake Gyllenhall, playing Tony Swofford, was released in 2005.Subsequent to his military service, Tony pursued writing, earning a B.A. from UC Davis and an M.F.A. from the renowned Iowa Writers' Workshop. He's taught at the University of Iowa, Lewis and Clark College, and currently Carnegie-Mellon University.  I've read Jarhead and watched the movie multiple times and can tell you Tony's story is as harrowing as it is darkly funny. I was blown away by the depths of Tony's beautifully written, dare I say poetic telling of such a deeply personal, nerve-wracking experience. I've also read another of Tony's memoirs, Hotels, Hospitals, and Jails, which is an equally wild ride through his personal and family life, especially dealing with his ailing father who was trying to maintain his boisterous lifestyle as his body was failing him.  Both books are brilliantly written. I highly recommend them to you, as well as his novel, Exit A.Tony has also published fiction and nonfiction in numerous major publications. including The New York Times and Harper's.

Well, here we are. Chloe Zhao's Hamnet - one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year - premiered at the BFI London Film Festival two weeks ago. Since it's premiere at Telluride back in late August, this movie has been billed as a locked-in OSCAR contender and potentially one of the biggest threats to WIN Best Picture. Reviews like that always get on my nerves because it's classic film festival overhype. You watch a movie surrounded by all the cast & crew and thousands of like-minded movie fans and, inevitably, the hype is going to be through the roof. All that being said, I watched this movie at a film festival as well... so I'll be telling you all today whether the hype was real. I've been a little nervous going into Hamnet because, while the trailers have excited me and the reviews were certainly promising, I am neither a Chloe Zhao guy or a Shakespeare guy. Zhao's movies have always felt cold to me and I truly believe that Nomadland is probably one of the worst Best Picture winners.... of all-time! But, I'm happy to report that Hamnet is the first time that I've truly been able to connect with one of her movies.
