Laurel and Hardy were a comedy team that is widely regarded as the greatest in film history. Stan Lauren and Oliver Hardy made more than 100 comedies together between 1921 and 1950. Danny Bacher and Berine Hogye co-authored an upcoming publication, Collecting Laurel and Hardy. Bacher has always been fascinated by old silent film stories. “We would sit and watch these old silent film strips of like, you know, comedians like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, of course, Laurel and Hardy, because my brother and I, there were two of us. We got into Laurel and Hardy. And, you know, I just I guess my cousin had given us a set of Laurel and Hardy dolls when we were really little, and we played with those. Then it was between that and the films. I just said, I want to try and find more of this. So, I really kind of started and amassed a huge collection of all these years, “said Bacher. Bacher realized the comic duo Laurel and Hardy were timeless when his brother showed an old film to his kindergarten students in Jersey City. “I was amazed by how much they laugh and how much they enjoyed this. And it almost was like, again, they weren't thinking of it like this was these were filmed like, you know, 80, 90 years ago. They were looking at them as a, you know, fresh audience. And this was something very new to them. And I don't think they had an idea of the timing of it. So that's the beauty of their comedy and their appeal is that they really were great, “said Bacher. The book features more than 1,000 artifacts from film history, fun stories, and research to create a veritable encyclopedia of Laurel and Hardy Memorabilia. The inspiration of the book came when Bacher and Hogye realized they both were collecting Laurel and Hardy memorabilia. “A couple of decades later, Danny now has the largest collection of Laurel Hardy memorabilia in the world. Bigger than anybody's collection. I've got a meager collection now compared to what Danny has. But you see that behind me is in his room. He has a lot of his artifacts. But several years ago, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, I'm an art director by trade. And so Danny asked me, Hey, would you do me a favor? I'm thinking I've got some cool stuff, one of a kind things, you know, be photograph some of these things. And so I went down, photograph them for him. And at some point he said, Do you think there's a book in this? And the answer was yes. We decided to keep photographing and put together a book, “said Hogye. The book has been published and will be on the shelves November 28, 2024.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Composer and musician Neil Brand brings a live show to the Electric Cinema as part of Flatpack Festival - Neil Brand Presents Laurel and Hardy is touring around the country, giving audiences a taste of Stan and Ollie's work before they were paired together, and showing us what their double act was like before the development of sound cinema. The show culminates in screenings of two of their silent shorts, Big Business and Liberty, accompanied on the piano, of course, by Neil. It's a great introduction to both Laurel and Hardy and silent comedy in general, which thrives when accompanied live. Neil's own passion for the duo, whose films he grew up with, is evident, describing their appeal to him and showing a clip of Stan, a drama he wrote about Stan visiting Ollie on his deathbed. He introduces us to the term "reciprocal destruction", a term that brilliantly distills something you immediately realise you associate with both Laurel and Hardy and the cartoons their comedy inspired: when someone attacks an opponent, the assailant must then wait for the victim to attack them in return, only then returning fire, each volley increasing in aggression and destructive power, until chaos reigns. And although we take issue with one of the chosen clips, of an early Stan Laurel film that includes a gay stereotype that is used uncritically here to earn laughs, it's a blip in an accomplished, well-constructed and entertaining show that we recommend you see. Recorded on 21st May 2022.
Composer Neil Brand chats with Aedín about his plans for an evening of Laurel and Hardy music at the Light House Cinema for the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival 2022.

Jeffrey Holland is Sitcom Royalty, You could say Hi De Hi and it wouldn't be the first time he'd heard that in the street and if you think it started airing on TV 41 years ago, Jeffrey's face hasn't really changed in that time. I guess when we see people pop on and off our TV screens they become part of our family, they're in our homes with us during a cuppa tea or a roast dinner, your sat with your favourite people or family and popular sitcoms such as Hi de hi, only fools and horses, one foot in the grave, they're there to make the whole family laugh together, that is the family's first Comedy Club together and the first theatre for the family is pantomime. So we have a lot to thank Mr Holland for, he has appeared in so many of our favourites including Hi de hi as Spike Dixon, You rang m'lord as James Twelve trees, Cecil parkin in oh Doctor Beeching and he has been in Are you being served, It aint arf hot mum and dads army. His face would be so recognisable throughout the 80's and 90's due to his part in the Russ Abbot TV Shows, Les Dennis and Kenny Everett TV Shows and if you have seen pantomime in the past 50 years you would probably have seen Jeffrey on the bill. I saw him with Keith Harris, Nigel Havers, Julian Clary and Joan Collins at the Birmingham Hippodrome, I mean what a show that was. I'll let Jeffrey tell you the rest, Welcome to E&T VOV Jeffrey Holland

Synopsis Today we celebrate the birthday of Leroy Bernard Shield, an American composer whose name might not ring a bell, but whose music you might instantly recognize – and with a smile. Shield's name rarely appeared on the credits for the classic “Our Gang” and “Laurel & Hardy” comedies from the 1930s, but his music was used in most of them. Leroy Shield was born in Waseca, Minnesota, on today's date in 1893. At five he was already an accomplished pianist and organist, and by 15 a professional arranger, composer, and concert pianist. In 1923, he joined the staff of the Victor Talking Machine Company, supervising their East Coast recording sessions. Then in 1930, he was appointed Victor's "Musical Director in charge of Hollywood, California, Activities," and it was in this capacity that he wrote and oversaw the recording of music for the famous comedies produced by the Hal Roach Studios. In 1945, Shield moved back to New York and became the orchestral contractor for the NBC radio network and worked closely with the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini and his NBC Symphony. Leroy Shield retired in 1955, moved to Florida, and died in Fort Lauderdale in 1962. Stan Laurel was born in England and Oliver Hardy in Georgia. Thank goodness they both found their way to Hollywood where they became Laurel and Hardy, one of the best-loved film duos of all time. In over 100 movies and short subjects they developed characters that are iconic -- the sweet, bumbling, and easily frustrated Stan and the more forceful but still comically hapless Ollie. As always find extended cuts in the comments at laughtracksradio.com and thank you for sharing our shows!

Laurel and Hardy have long been immortalized on film. Now they're modernized too. And if that's not enough history for you, some lady wrote a fan fic about Queen Anne, which kind of counts. It's a brave new world where you can ship actual people and they'll spend millions of dollars making it into a movie.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
