After years of talking about it, we are finally discussing perhaps the most influential film of all time: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari! We talk about the historical context of the Weimar Republic, the aspects of expressionism seen on screen, whether this movie trusts authority, face acting, action figures, and more! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky32ti4M9Ls The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 1920 German silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene and written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. The quintessential work of early German Expressionist cinema, it tells the story of a hypnotist (Werner Krauss) who uses a somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt) to commit murders. The film features a dark, twisted visual style, with sharp-pointed forms; oblique, curving lines; structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles; and shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets. The set design is "anti-realistic, claustrophobic" and "harsh" which is "coupled with feverish anxiety [that] entered the vocabulary of filmmakers and film viewers" particularly during the Weimar Republic, when this film was made.
Indy runs down the winners of 2026 YRCA (Young Readers Choice Awards), Samantha suggests Remain: A Novel, a supernatural book by the unlikely pair of Nicholas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan and we prepare for some sweet sweet expressionism with our next big watches: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari & The Night of the Hunter! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), Terrorvision (1986), and Uninvited (1988). That's right, folks! It's Turkey Time again, and we are celebrating our 5th episode dedicated to those wonderous missteps in cinematic history. They aimed for the stars, but dropped like frozen turkey chucked off a building! But as we always say, the only bad movie is a boring one. And these films are definitely not boring. Because once the credits roll, if you've been entertained, then how could it be considered bad??? So sit back and enjoy this episode, where we discuss giant telepathic crabs, a ravenous space creature beamed in through a brand-new state-of-the-art satellite dish, and, finally, a story about an experiment gone horribly wrong that leaves a mutant creature living inside a cat that just happens to end up on a luxury yacht with some criminals and college kids. How could that not spell fun? Do the film's novelistic approach and impeccable characterizations make it a Fancy Feast? Or does its vibes-based tone and myriad of plots make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: Mr. Fancymovietime DEFINITELY got his union card. On the next episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J.: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

For Episode 16 of Pop Apocalypse, we welcome composer, artist, and media theorist Paul Miller. Miller is best known for his music as DJ Spooky, the avant-garde turntableist who has collaborated with artists ranging from Chuck D to Yoko Ono. He has also re-scored classic films, such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and his art has been showcased in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In this wide-ranging conversation, we asked Paul to explore the eeriness of life in the digital age. We touch on the perils and possibilities of artificial intelligence, the role of the DJ, Japanese Butoh as a response to nuclear tragedy, re-scoring D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation, and how Einstein, science fiction, and Sun Ra have shaped Miller's work.
This week's rounds are Music (Mangled by MIDI), The Norman Conquest of England, Founders of Religions (Quickfire), and Native Gardening (with guest host Lindsey). Music comes from Ihsan & The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with Conquest.

1920's German expressionist The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari did more than inspire a whole kind of cinema-it also became the great-grandparent of a genre. The mind-bending dive into the psyche genre that saw three of its greatest examples all influence each other: Ingmar Bergman's 1966 Persona which begat in many ways Robert Altman's 1977 3 Women. And all those movies consciously or unconsciously begat David Lynch's 2001 masterpiece Mulholland Drive. Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill takes a look at the journey of inspiration of all these movies as well as side trips to other great examples of the genre like David Fincher's Fight Club, Roman Polanski's Repulsion, and Darren Aronovsky's Black Swan.
