Nosferatu (1922), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) In episode 78, we started our ongoing Twice Told Tales segment, featuring the first two versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. In this episode, with the recent release of Robert Eggers long awaited version of Nosferatu, we're going back to the original, one of cinema's first true monsters, in F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu, then following it up with Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre. As in our first Twice Told Tales episode, this isn't a comparison as to which one is better, but an opportunity to dig deep into each film, discussing why we think the impact it has made is still felt today, for both versions. Send us a textFor Scary Season 2024, we're harkening back to a founding film in the genre of horror. In this era of the 21st Century, fans of horror are rich in the types of film they view to give themselves the creeps --- body horror, slasher films, psychological fear, the supernatural. But a film had to be the forerunner for Hollywood and the rest of the world to understand that the public wanted to be scared for their 25 cents (in 1931, probably now more like $25 --- Junior Mints included). Horror would put people in the seats and pay off. There'd been a few forerunners in the silent era --- German Expressionist films such as The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu (more on that to come). But the genre took off when Universal brought out the first in their classic series of monster films, with Dracula in 1931. In this lies a tale of, not just horror, but real-world crosscurrents in legend, in literature, symbolism, star power, typecasting, and longevity. Cue up youtube, and get ready to see a woman having a difficult time, houses that are too close together, chairs with too many backs, a mayor struggling with bureaucracy, a sleepy-creepy man with the most dramatic eye makeup and the skinniest legs you've ever seen, low-quality cloud wallpaper, a man who doesn't know how to use a knife, and more! We get through part 4 this week. Tune in next week for parts 5 and 6, and our thoughts on this important contribution to film. In this one we mostly giggle at the silly German names. Could a centuries-old curse be to blame for Will Smith's infamous slap of Chris Rock at the Academy Awards? Amanda Kellogg uncovers the long history of a superstition known as Macbeth's curse. And: Anna Beecher first encountered the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale, The Boy Who Went Forth to Learn to Shudder, as a young kid and was thoroughly frightened. She based her play, Skin of the Teeth, on that same Grimm's fairy tale. Later in the show: Halloween and Scream are two of the goriest slasher movies. But they're more than just jump-scares and frights. Jennifer McLawhorn says slasher movies actually open a window into important social anxieties around gender. Plus: The first horror movies like Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari came out in the 1920's, during the silent film era. Jenny Taylor says the roots of the horror movie genre can be traced back to Germany's Weimar Republic.

Mike and Nick celebrate spooky season with two classics of silent horror cinema. What better way to kick off the festivities other than travelling back in time? 1926's Faust sees FW Murnau retell the classic tale of making a deal with the devil. 1928's The Man Who Laughs sees Paul Leni channel Conrad Veidt (of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari fame) to tell the tragic love story of a man disfigured during youth. Both films capitalize on the early stages of the medium. Where sound is absent, the two films more than make up for with their stars' expressive power.

Ryan and Todd explore the classical horror film in terms of the antagonism between life and the beyond, inclusive of death. They focus on the films The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Godzilla, and Psycho.

On this week's show, the hosts begin by asking the question: What even is Garfield? Jim Davis' overfed, Monday-hating (even though he's jobless) cultural figure first appeared in comic strips in the late 1970s, and since then, has been surprisingly resilient, most recently conquering the summer box-office with The Garfield Movie. But who is Garfield, and more perhaps more importantly, why is he a thing? To answer these questions, each host watched (or endured) a different Garfield entity, including Garfield: The Movie (2004), Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006), and the latest film starring Chris Pratt as the titular cat. Then, the three discuss suspense and its nature in relation to fiction, inspired by Kathryn Schulz's essay for The New Yorker, “The Secrets of Suspense.” It's a curious, fantastic essay that questions the human impulse to know what happens next.
