There's Only One Truth - The Lesson of Shavuot

The Rabbi Sinclair Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2026 0:57

We live in a "post-truth" world where reality is often bent to fit personal emotions, beliefs, or convenience. But the festival of Shavuot stands as a powerful reminder of the exact opposite. This Shavuot, as we celebrate the giving of the Torah, we are celebrating a timeless anchor in a shifting world. In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed "Bohemian Rhapsody". His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band "Foreigner" (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, "Feels Like The First Time", "Cold as Ice" and "Long, Long Way from Home". Other production work included "The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars", "The Curves", and "Nutz" as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich's Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony's Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. This episode we look at the phenomena of hugely successful artists refusing to play the songs that made them!  First among these is Radiohead, whose “Creep” launched them onto the world stage.  Others include The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Madonna.   Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is The Stranglers' 1977 debut, the excellent “Rattus Norvegicus”, yet another punk record from the mid-70s. Mick loves this album for its energy and refusal to bow down to supposed “punk” rules.  We also look at some of the highlights of The Stranglers' outrageous career to this day.  In Rock News, Jeff examines the success (or otherwise) of a Quebec band called Angine de Poitrine, known for their complex, “microtonal” compositions and absurdist public image, featuring oversized papier-mâché masks and black-and-white polka-dotted costumes. Imagine! Jeff also has a look at this year's inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, including Iron Maiden, Phil Collins, and Joy Division, and our Rod Stewart moment looks at his relaxed attitude towards death.  Plenty there for everyone!  References:  1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die, Robert Dimery, The Stranglers, Rattus Norvegicus, Hugh Cornwell, JJ Burnel, sexism & misogyny, “(Get a) Grip (on yourself)”, “Peaches”, “Down in the Sewer”, Deep Purple, “Strange Kind of Woman”, ice cream van, "Golden Brown", harpsichord, Battersea Park Big Top Festival strippers, Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Philip Selway, Pablo Honey, Electioneering, Just, “Rolling Stone's 250 Greatest Guitarists of all Time”, “OK Computer”, Nick Cave, “Creep”, “Pavlov's Dog”, “Julia”, AC/DC, “It's a Long Way to the Top”, Bon Scott, Pat Benatar, “Hit me with your Best Shot”, Beastie Boys, “Fight for Your Right (to Party)”, Billy Joel , “Tell Her About It”, Weird Al Jankovic, “Eat It”, Rolling Stones, “Brown Sugar”, Madonna, Dylan, “Hurricane”, Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin, "Stairway to Heaven", Eric Clapton, "Tears in Heaven”, George Harrison, "My Sweet Lord", "He's So Fine"  Playlist (all the music & artists we referred to in this episode) Angine de Potrine Hugh Cornwell Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!

The Omer was a one-time barley offering brought in the temple on the second day of Pesach. Why define this entire period of counting by a one-time korban? Wouldn't it be more precise to call it: "The Count to Shavuos?" Parshat Kedoshim is filled not with ethereal ideas, but with practical mitzvos: honesty in business, respect for others, sensitivity, restraint. Because once a person internalizes that Hashem fills all reality, holiness is no longer something distant—it becomes something imminent and immediate. Acharei Mos leads to Kedoshim.  In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed "Bohemian Rhapsody". How to Draw Near to God When You Feel a Long Way Off

There's a mental image a lot of us carry of what God's face looks like when we finally turn around and start walking home. Maybe you picture disappointment, or a long, tired sigh, or a face that's already made up its mind about you. But Jesus tells a story about a father who saw his son while he was still a long way off, and the father ran. This week's message is part of our ongoing series, The Good Fight, and we walk through what it actually looks like to draw near to God when you feel far from him. Drawing from Luke 11, 1 Timothy 6, James 4:8 to 10, and the three parables of Luke 15, we explore the difference between the omnipresence and the manifest presence of God, why holiness was never meant to keep us away, and how the love of the Father runs toward us before we ever have a chance to clean ourselves up.Paul tells Timothy to fight the good fight, but he doesn't tell him to fight it alone, and he doesn't tell him to fight it through performance. He tells him to run from evil and run toward God. That is the heart of pursuing holiness in the Christian life. We don't simply move away from sin. We move toward our Father. If you've ever felt like one of the put together religious people on the outside, or one of the put out people who feel too far gone, this message is for you. Two of sin's quietest lies are that God runs from you when you fail, and that your worth to him decreases with every wrong turn. The prodigal son sermon in Luke 15 dismantles both. Your Father is filled with compassion before you say a single word. Repentance is not what earns the embrace. Repentance is the debris that falls out of the collision of his love and your fallen humanity. So how do you actually pursue holiness this week? You just show up. You stand in the presence of the Lord. You let him love you. The confession will come. The change will come. But it comes after the embrace, never before.Scripture in this sermon: Luke 11 (the Lord's Prayer), 1 Timothy 6:11 to 12, James 4:8 to 10, and Luke 15 (the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son).

One of the most difficult things in davening, praying, is when we say the Shema, and we pronounce Hashem's Name, we are meant to think: He is the Creator of everything. Not just the Earth, not just the solar system, the universe - everything. Beyond. And beyond the beyond. Now this isn't an easy thing to imagine. But when I saw those pictures from Artemis II, I got help in visualizing that idea. On this week's episode of Drew Blood's Dark Tales, author P.D. Williams delivers two unnerving tales of strange roads, false intentions, and the danger of assuming you know exactly what kind of world you're walking into. First, four blues musicians set out for Clarksdale and find themselves pulled into a night that feels increasingly wrong with every mile. Then, a smug online do-gooder goes looking for praise, gratitude, and easy content, only to discover that some acts of charity come with consequences he never saw coming. Darkly funny, eerie, and laced with menace, this is an episode about detours—moral, physical, and otherwise—and what may be waiting at the end of them. “Long Way” by P.D. Williams — When a group of traveling blues musicians heads for Clarksdale in 1936, a breakdown on a lonely Mississippi road leaves them stranded in the dark and far from help. As the men press onward through an increasingly unnatural night, what begins as a simple detour turns into a harrowing encounter with forces far beyond their understanding. A haunting blend of historical atmosphere, folklore, and cosmic unease, this story charts a nightmare journey into the unknown. “Kind” by P.D. Williams — Jared has built an online persona around public generosity, turning staged acts of compassion into content for clicks, praise, and profit. But when one of his self-serving charity stunts leads him into unfamiliar territory, he finds himself face-to-face with people who are not nearly as eager to play along as he expected. Darkly funny, sharp, and increasingly menacing, this story explores performative kindness, exploitation, and the danger of underestimating those you think you can use. Description:Today's bonus episode is a joy from start to finish. We're sitting down with treasured friend Anne Lamott—beloved writer, teacher, and spiritual guide—whose voice has shaped how so many of us think about faith, truth, writing, and what it means to be human on the page. Anne returns to For the Love to talk about her upcoming book, Good Writing, co-written with her husband, journalist and editor Neal Allen. While Neal couldn't join us today, this conversation is very much about the shared work they created together—a book that isn't chasing polish or perfection, but clarity, honesty, and respect for the reader. Good Writing is part craft guide, part philosophy of living. Written in alternating voices, it blends Anne's signature warmth, humor, and spiritual insight with Neal's journalistic precision and discipline. Together, they explore what makes sentences work, how voice is formed, why ego gets in the way, and why clarity is not just a stylistic choice—but an act of generosity. In this intimate and often funny conversation, Jen and Amy talk with Anne about what it was like to co-write a book so closely, what collaboration revealed about trust and restraint, and how writing—at its best—is a relationship. They dig into voice and ego, bad sentences and letting go, rhythm and revision, and why removing what doesn't serve the sentence can feel like both grief and grace. But as always with Anne, the conversation goes deeper than craft. This episode explores writing as a way of being in the world—how attention, humility, and courage shape not only our sentences, but our lives.  If you've ever loved Bird by Bird, wrestled with your inner critic, or longed to tell the truth with a little more care—this conversation is for you. Thought-provoking Quotes: “I only have to do today, today.” – Anne Lamott “We write because we try to tell the truth. We try to share our experience, strength and hope.” – Anne Lamott “Say what you mean. Mean what you say. And don't say it mean.” – Anne Lamott Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith by Anne Lamott - https://amzn.to/4qLZRQR Anne Lamott on Faith, Writing, and Radical Self-Love - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/bonus/anne-lamott-on-faith-writing-and-radical-self-love-2/ Neal Allen - https://www.shapesoftruth.com/ Good Writing: 36 Ways to Improve Your Sentences by Neal Allen and Anne Lamott - https://amzn.to/3NMoKNP Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott - https://amzn.to/4t7FteL Somehow: Thoughts on Love by Anne Lamott - https://amzn.to/3Z4Nd3r Stanley Tucci on the For the Love podcast - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/stanley-tucci-food-memories-and-emotions/ Amy's Full of Microplastics and Existential Dread Sweatshirt - https://www.threadless.com/shop/@dinomike/design/full-of-microplastics/womens/sweatshirt Awake: A Memoir by Jen Hatmaker - https://amzn.to/4rlv3Gz Jessica Mitford - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Mitford Tyler Merritt - https://thetylermerrittproject.com/ I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith, and Being Black in America by Tyler Merritt - https://amzn.to/49N1ms8 Better Days: Tame Your Inner Critic by Neal Allen - https://amzn.to/3LTEVs9 A Writing Room - https://awritingroom.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://awritingroom.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/annelamott/ Twitter - https://x.com/ANNELAMOTT?lang=en Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/AnneLamott/ Substack - https://annelamott.substack.com/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
