Post Resurrection Sunday In Honour Of The Lord
For more than three decades, trailblazing artist and activist Joyce J. Scott has elevated the creative potential of beadwork as a relevant contemporary art form. Scott uses off-loom, hand-threaded glass beads to create striking figurative sculptures, wall hangings, and jewelry informed by her African American ancestry, the craft traditions of her family (including her mother, renowned quilter Elizabeth T. Scott), and traditional Native American techniques, such as the peyote stitch. Each object that Scott creates is a unique, vibrant, and challenging work of art developed with imagination, wit, and sly humor. Born to sharecroppers in North Carolina who were descendants of enslaved people, Scott's family migrated to Baltimore, Maryland, where the artist was born and raised. Scott hales from a long line of makers with extraordinary craftsmanship adept at pottery, knitting, metalwork, basketry, storytelling, and quilting. It was from her family that the young artist cultivated the astonishing skills and expertise for which she is now renowned, and where she learned to upcycle all materials, repositioning craft as a forceful stage for social commentary and activism. In the 1990s, Scott began working with glass artisans to create blown, pressed, and cast glass that she incorporated into her beaded sculptures. This not only allowed her to increase the scale of her work, but also satisfied her desire to collaborate. In 1992, she was invited to the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington. Continuing her interest in glass, Scott has worked with local Baltimore glassblowers as well as with flameworking pioneer Paul Stankard and other celebrated glass fabricators. In 2012, Goya Contemporary Gallery arranged to have Scott work at Adriano Berengo's celebrated glass studio on the island of Murano in Italy, creating works that were part of the exhibition Glasstress through the Venice Biennale. Scott has worn many hats during her illustrious career: quilter, performance artist, printmaker, sculptor, singer, teacher, textile artist, recording artist, painter, writer, installation artist, and bead artist. Her wide-ranging body of work has crossed styles and mediums, from the most intricate beaded form to large-scale outdoor installation. Whether social or political, the artist's subject matter reflects her narrative of what it means to be Black in America. Scott continues to live and work in Baltimore, Maryland. She received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Selected solo museum exhibitions include The Baltimore Museum of Art (2024); Seattle Art Museum (2024 – 2025); and Grounds for Sculpture (2018), Trenton, NJ. She is the recipient of myriad commissions, grants, awards, residencies, and prestigious honors including from the National Endowment for the Arts, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, Anonymous Was a Woman, American Craft Council, National Living Treasure Award, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women's Caucus for the Arts, Mary Sawyers Imboden Baker Award, MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2016), Smithsonian Visionary Artist Award, National Academy of Design Induction, and Moore College Visionary Woman Award, among others. In March of 2024, Scott opened a major 50-year traveling Museum retrospective titled Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams co-organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and Seattle Art Museum. Also in 2024, Scott opened Bearing Witness: A History of Prints by Joyce J Scott at Goya Contemporary Gallery. Her latest exhibition, Joyce J. Scott: Messages, opened at The Chrysler Museum of Art on February 6, 2025 and will run through August 17, 2025 at the Glass Projects Space. This exhibition is organized by Mobilia Gallery, Cambridge, MA. Says Carolyn Swan Needell, the Chrysler Museum's Barry Curator of Glass: “We are thrilled to host this focused traveling exhibition here in Norfolk at the very moment when Scott's brilliant career is being recognized more widely, through a retrospective of her work that is co-organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Seattle Museum of Art.” In Messages, 34 remarkable beaded works of art spanning the artist's career express contemporary issues and concepts. Included in the show is Scott's recent beaded neckpiece, War, What is it Good For, Absolutely Nothin', Say it Again (2022). A technical feat in peyote stitch, infused with color and texture, this multilayered and intricate beadwork comments on violence in America. Embedding cultural critique within the pleasurable experience of viewing a pristinely crafted object, Scott's work mines history to better understand the present moment. The visual richness of Scott's objects starkly contrasts with the weight of the subject matter that they explore. She says: “I am very interested in raising issues…I skirt the borders between comedy, pathos, delight, and horror. I believe in messing with stereotypes, prodding the viewer to reassess, inciting people to look and then carry something home – even if it's subliminal – that might make a change in them.”
Bestselling fiction writer Curtis Sittenfeld joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about her new collection of stories, Show Don't Tell. Sittenfeld discusses the title story, which depicts graduate students in creative writing competing for funding, and its connections to her time at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, when that practice was common. She also considers how President Trump's attacks on DEI reveal some people's true natures, and what it means to write about “the hypocrisy of being a person.” Finally, she explains why she thinks of time as a plot twist, and reflects on returning to the protagonist of her debut novel, Prep, Lee Fiora, who reappears in the new collection's final story, which features her thirtieth high school reunion. Sittenfeld reads from Show Don't Tell. To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). In Enemy of My Dreams, Jenny based her heroine Julia partially on Julia the Elder—rebellious daughter of Augustus who got herself exiled to Pandateria for being, as the ancients say, “too slutty.” Julia the Elder refused, REFUSED to rein it in. And for that, we adore her. But accounts of her life are told by men, sometimes her political enemies. She may have been a victim of slander, or engaged in deeper plotting that her dad wanted to keep secret. And while Julia the Elder was exiled for roughly five years, her daughter, Julia the Younger, was exiled for 20. Join us as we explore the lives of these indomitable women with historical fiction author and classics scholar Tana Rebellis, author of the Exile Duology and expert in Julio-Claudian exile. South of My Dreams: Finding My American Home, A Memoir (U South Carolina Press, 2024) by F. K. Clementi follows the adventures and misadventures of Fania, a quixotic heroine, who dreamed all her life of making it big in New York City. Growing up in 1970s Italy, she felt constrained by a stale environment, a corrupt society, and a national culture hostile to women's independence. In pursuit of her childhood fantasy, and heavily influenced by Hollywood films, she leaves everything behind to begin her new life in New York, where she thinks her American Dream awaits. Instead, her American nightmare begins. South of My Dreams, published in 2024 by the University of South Carolina Press, is a story of irreparable trauma graced by intense love, faithful friendships, and inspiring mentors. Simultaneously merciless and humorous, Clementi's memoir is an inspiring account of a woman's disillusionment and personal rebirth in the polyglot neighborhoods of New York City, enriched by her portraits of life, love and work. South of My Dreams will resonate with all who fight hard for what they want and refuse to put aside their childhood dreams. Hosted by Robert W. Rerun: Scent-o-Vision, an in-cinema olfactory experience, was unveiled at the New York World's Fair on 10th October, 1940. Accompanying a short film ‘My Dream', its Swiss inventor, Hans Laube, pumped in aromas of rose water, peaches and burning incense for his wowed attendees to sniff. But it would be two decades before the technology was finally put into a feature film - Mike Todd, Jr's ‘Scent of Mystery', in 1960 - and never used again. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly revisit the 50's battle of the ‘smellaroo pix', as Todd's re-named ‘Smell-o-Vision' took on the rival ‘Smell-O-Rama'; explore why theme parks ultimately provided the best platform for the theory in practice; and consider what happens when an audience experiences ‘olfactory fatigue'... The Chief Executive of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre has stepped down. It follows an independent review which found the centre failed to protect women-only spaces. It was commissioned by Rape Crisis Scotland - after an employment tribunal found the centre in Edinburgh had unlawfully discriminated against an employee - who believed sexual assault victims should be able to choose the sex of those supporting them. Anita Rani hears more from Lorna Gordon, the BBC's Scotland correspondent. Karen Maguire received an out-of-court settlement from South Lanarkshire Council last year after her adoption of a two-year-old boy broke down. She won the payout after her lawyer argued that the council had failed to provide her with sufficient background information on the child and did not support her during the placement. Karen tells Anita why she has decided to speak out. And Anita also hears from Dr Polly Cowan from Scottish Adoption and Fostering, who has separately carried out research into child adoption breakdowns. Visual artist Bharti Kher's new exhibition, Target Queen at the Southbank Centre, features supersized bindis reimagined from their microscopic form to the macro size worn by the goddess, transforming the brutalist building into a powerful feminine force. Bharti joins Anita to discuss the exhibition. Director Fawzia Mirza joins Anita to talk about her feature film debut, The Queen of My Dreams. Set across Karachi and Canada, the film follows Azra, a queer aspiring actress who clashes with—and ultimately reconciles with—her conservative Pakistani mother. Partly inspired by Fawzia's own life, it explores the bonds between mothers and daughters and how gay brown girls can also have an epic Bollywood-style romance.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Dianne McGregor

Change isn't easy but we make it more difficult by overthinking it and fearing looking new or incompetent at something. Whether it's creating a new gym habit or… replacing your 10 year old hair dryer with a lighter fancier one, the roadblocks are very similar. In today's episode, I want to share what will be a two part episode around two specific occasions where I was resisting change and sticking with what was familiar and, once I took the plunge and changed, I was making it so much worse in my head and I'm now so much happier. I want this for you too. About "My Dreams of You" - Hallmark (2024) Directed by: Kevin Fair. Kevin has 49 directing credits and in addition to the slew of Signed, Sealed, Delivered movies he's directed, he has also recently directed: "For Love and Honey," "Legend of the Lost Locket," "A Season for Family," "Checkin it Twice" and "3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost." Written by: Gary Templeton and Marcy Holland Marcy Holland has 47 writing credits including hits like "A Biltmore Christmas," and the upcoming "Christmas Quest." This is Gary Templeton's eleventh writing credit, although his first for Hallmark. His other credits include movies like "Corduroy," and "Frog Goes to Dinner." Skyler Samuels plays Grace. Skyler has 32 acting credits and this is her second Hallmark appearance. She got her start in s how's like "Drake and Josh," "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" and "That's so Raven." She went on to play Gabby Petito in "The Gabby Petito Story." She's now playing Young Aurora Teagarden in the "Aurora Teagarden Mysteries." Kapil Talwalkar plays Michael. Kapil has 21 acting credits including the entire run of "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" as well as 16 episodes of the "Night Court" reboot. This is his first Hallmark appearance. Cecilia Lee plays Alura. This is a breakout role for Cecilia who has just seven acting credits (four of which are short films.) This is also her first Hallmark appearance. David Rosser plays Harvey. This is not David's first hallmark appearance as he was also in "Paging Mr. Darcy" and "Never Too Late to Celebrate." He has 43 total acting credits. “My Dreams of You” was filmed in Canada's Ottawa and surrounding areas. Talwalkar revealed that he wrote an original song with Lauren Ray for the movie. Watch the Trailer for "My Dreams of You" Our Thoughts on "My Dreams of You" What We Liked Firstly, big kudos to Hallmark for embracing diversity with "My Dreams of You". One of the film's strengths is its casting. We were thrilled to see an Indian American actor, Kapil Talwalkar, in the leading role. It felt fresh and exciting, breaking from the typical mold of Hallmark leads. Plus, let's not forget Cecilia Lee, who shone as Allura and, for us, stole the spotlight in every scene she was in. Speaking of characters, we appreciated Skylar Samuels as Grace. It seems Hallmark might be grooming her for the spotlight. From her earlier roles in shows like "Drake and Josh" to her Hallmark mystery stints, she's proving to be a rising star. As for the plot, Dream Central was a fascinating concept. We loved the big swings Hallmark took with this idea, even if it got a bit confusing at times (we'll get to that later!). And how adorable was that rain-soaked kiss? It brought a genuine sense of romance and progress to Grace and Michael's budding relationship without fast-forwarding to unrealistic love declarations. What We Wished For Now, onto our wishes. The movie didn't come without its flaws. We found that it suffered from a lack of clear direction in the storytelling. The dual dreams and real-life struggles theme felt a bit overstuffed. Dream Central could have easily carried the plot without needing both leads to chase professio...
