Randy's latest book, March of the Wooden Soldiers: The Amazing Story of Laurel & Hardy's Babes in Toyland, is a detailed, behind-the-scenes look at the making of March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934), the adaptation of the Victor Herbert operetta Babes in Toyland (which, in fact, was the title of Wooden Soldiers when it was originally released) that not only has remained a holiday tradition on television since the early 1950s, but was reportedly Stan Laurel's favorite film of the ones with he did with Oliver Hardy. Topics this segment include how March of the Wooden Soldiers was originally intended as an Eastertime release in 1934, as well as the many delays that plagued the production of the movie. Laurel and Hardy were a comedy team that is widely regarded as the greatest in film history. Stan Lauren and Oliver Hardy made more than 100 comedies together between 1921 and 1950. Danny Bacher and Berine Hogye co-authored an upcoming publication, Collecting Laurel and Hardy. Bacher has always been fascinated by old silent film stories. “We would sit and watch these old silent film strips of like, you know, comedians like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, of course, Laurel and Hardy, because my brother and I, there were two of us. We got into Laurel and Hardy. And, you know, I just I guess my cousin had given us a set of Laurel and Hardy dolls when we were really little, and we played with those. Then it was between that and the films. I just said, I want to try and find more of this. So, I really kind of started and amassed a huge collection of all these years, “said Bacher. Bacher realized the comic duo Laurel and Hardy were timeless when his brother showed an old film to his kindergarten students in Jersey City. “I was amazed by how much they laugh and how much they enjoyed this. And it almost was like, again, they weren't thinking of it like this was these were filmed like, you know, 80, 90 years ago. They were looking at them as a, you know, fresh audience. And this was something very new to them. And I don't think they had an idea of the timing of it. So that's the beauty of their comedy and their appeal is that they really were great, “said Bacher. The book features more than 1,000 artifacts from film history, fun stories, and research to create a veritable encyclopedia of Laurel and Hardy Memorabilia. The inspiration of the book came when Bacher and Hogye realized they both were collecting Laurel and Hardy memorabilia. “A couple of decades later, Danny now has the largest collection of Laurel Hardy memorabilia in the world. Bigger than anybody's collection. I've got a meager collection now compared to what Danny has. But you see that behind me is in his room. He has a lot of his artifacts. But several years ago, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, I'm an art director by trade. And so Danny asked me, Hey, would you do me a favor? I'm thinking I've got some cool stuff, one of a kind things, you know, be photograph some of these things. And so I went down, photograph them for him. And at some point he said, Do you think there's a book in this? And the answer was yes. We decided to keep photographing and put together a book, “said Hogye. The book has been published and will be on the shelves November 28, 2024.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to this week's edition of "Saturday Matinee" on Vintage Classic Radio! Prepare to be regaled with laughter, drama, and a dash of nostalgia as we line up three timeless radio shows from the golden age of radio. First up, we'll be joining the iconic duo Laurel and Hardy in "Mr. Slater's Poultry Market". In this hilarious escapade, Stan and Ollie find themselves embroiled in a series of comic misadventures when they take up jobs at Mr. Slater's bustling poultry market. The simple task of preparing and delivering chickens becomes a fiasco only this pair could conjure up. The episode stars Stan Laurel as Stan, Oliver Hardy as Ollie, with James Finlayson lending his talents as the perpetually flustered Mr. Slater. A host of other characters adds to the mayhem, bringing laughter aplenty. Following the laughter, we'll simmer down with "Coffee and Cake" by Colgate's Theater of Romance, which originally graced the airwaves on April 16th, 1955. This heartwarming tale invites listeners into the life of a small-town baker whose world is turned upside down when love unexpectedly walks through the door. This stirring romantic drama stars Jeffrey Lynn and Barbara Fuller in the lead roles, supported by a talented cast including Lester Maine as the town's doctor, Sylvia Field as the caring aunt, and John McIntire as the wise best friend. Finally, we wrap up with the delightful "Our Miss Brooks" radio show, in the episode "Where To Go For Thanksgiving", which first entertained audiences on November 27th, 1949. Connie Brooks, played by the incomparable Eve Arden, finds herself in a bind when her Thanksgiving plans are upended, leading to a comical quest for a place to celebrate the holiday. The show features Gale Gordon as the irascible Principal Osgood Conklin, Richard Crenna as the well-meaning student Walter Denton, and Jane Morgan as the lovable landlady Mrs. Davis. So tune in to Vintage Classic Radio this Saturday for a journey back in time with these three cherished shows. From the slapstick genius of Laurel and Hardy to the tender charm of Colgate's Theater of Romance, and the whimsical wit of "Our Miss Brooks", there's something for everyone in our "Saturday Matinee".

We're happy to welcome Daniel Budnik (@dannyslacks1) to the podcast to discuss an underrated comic great of the 1960s, Green Acres. Daniel wrote “From Beverly Hills to Hooterville,” an episode guide and analysis of the three shows created by Paul Henning in the 1960s: The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction and Green Aces. We talk about the show's origin and how Jay Sommers based on the show on “Granby's Green Acres,” a radio show with a similar premise back in the 1950. There's a lot of talk on the show about Sommers and writing partner Chevillat, who scripted almost all of the show's 170 episodes over six seasons. There's lots of talk about the cast, headed by Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor and the various folks that inhabit Hooterville, including handyman Ed (Tom Lester) shifty salesman Mr. Haney (Pat Buttram) and of course, the breakout star of the show at the time, Arnold Ziffel (Arnold the Pig). We discuss the surreal and absurdist comedy found on the show, which probably goes back to the careers of Sommers and Chevillat, who worked with people in vaudeville, film and radio like the Marx Brothers, Burns and Allen and Laurel & Hardy. There's lots of talk about our favorite and/or memorable episodes and bits, including Lisa's cooking, Oliver's empassioned speeches about farming and all the metatext in the show. This was a very fun show to record and discuss such a television classic. We hope to have Daniel back on the show to talk about some of his other areas of research he has done in his books and podcasts, including Supertrain and Time Express, that's the Vincent Price “Fantasy Island on a train” show whose name we couldn't remember.

A L Katz's love of film began as a child in Baltimore with Laurel & Hardy and Groucho Marx. He went to college in Vassar and really learned story telling there. After one audition, he decided he didn't want to act but write. After a high school friend moved to L.A. to be an agent and Mr. Katz was trying to put together a play in New York, she convinced him to write a screenplay and go to L.A., which of course he thought was ridiculous but he was convinced, won over by the people and the weather, after a short visit. The first week, his agent set up a meeting with the first producer he ever met, Gilbert Adler, in 1985. Who was instrumental in Alan's move to California and they were good friends for a decade. They co-produced and wrote together on the job of his dreams, Tales From The Crypt. But by the release of Bordello of Blood, their friendship was over. Alan and Gil reconnected 25 years later to create, How Not To Make a Movie Podcast. Where they talk about their work together and have guests they once worked with to tell their stories. Gil was hired by HBO to do something with More Stories, he worked on The Hitchhiker and the 3rd season of Tales From the Crypt that was struggling and was slated to end. Alan and Gil resurrected the concept of Tales from the Crypt. Alan reimagined the Cryptkeeper played by John Kassir and his role in the series. Plus balancing the show with the budget, which priorly was always in a deficit. They corrected it by hiring Gil. And Gil brought Alan on as a story editor. (“You manage the budget by managing the script!”) Alan's first experience with the show was as a judge for the Cable Ace Awards and he viewed the first 3 episodes of the Tales from the Crypt and he loved them! Since Alan was a DC comic and Mad Magazine fan and he wanted the show to be more black comedy than horror. How it was working with Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver? How HBO's ad slogan came out of a screening of Tales with HBO executives? Great stories about MeatLoaf, getting Kirk Douglas for Yellow. And how Bordello of Blood came to be. Another movie was supposed to be made in it's place but the machinations of Hollywood turned and suddenly everything changed but this story is for part 2. If you've ever been to a trade show, you know that products for the Christmas season are presented and pre-sold in July! Sort of like the Laurel & Hardy film in which they sold Christmas trees in summer!   Hopefully, we have better marketing than the comedy duo, but there is one superb gift we can make people aware of year-round.   Ephesians 2:8 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”   If you've found faith in Jesus Christ, you know how good that feels. How peaceful. You naturally want to share this with everyone you meet. This free gift from Jesus is available to anyone, no matter their circumstances.   Now that you've been on the receiving end, you truly will understand that it's not exactly better to give than receive—this is eternal life, after all—but the joy you'll feel in sharing Christ is a feeling that cannot be matched.   So get out there and share the Good News year-round, not just during the Christmas season!   Let's pray. Lord, Jesus gave us His all, and we are eternally thankful for that. Please give us many opportunities to share Him with others. Amen.

Amen.

Kerry and Collin unearthed the Director's Cut of this pretty terrible movie, a cut that runs 2 hours and 22 minutes and features lip syncing by Drew Barrymore, Keanu Reeves and Pat Morita, none of which is remotely convincing. This is the third version of "Babes In Toyland" that has been discussed on the show and certainly the most nightmarish and bizarre (which is really saying something after that terrifying Mickey Mouse/monkey hybrid from the Laurel & Hardy version). Many conspiracy theories are discussed with regards to who is singing what. Also, is it possible to make a Terrence Malick Christmas movie? Listen and find out.

The Longest Day was last weekend, but the fundraising doesn't close out until August 31, 2020, so there's still time to donate here.   Phil describes their Longest Day experience as Laurel & Hardy Throw a Party, and gives up the details. There's a lot of laughing in this episode, and sometimes--like if we've been lucky enough to survive 2020 so far--we just need to laugh.   We finally got Tim on the show!! New Coke was born.  But long-time Coca-Cola drinkers didn’t appreciate the change to a more Pepsi-like taste.  They wanted the classic taste back.  Seventy-nine days later, Coke announced the original formula would return under the name Coca-Cola Classic and would exist alongside the new Coke (which would carry the Coke name).  Eventually, demand (?) for New Coke waned enough to stop making it altogether — until now.   With the highly anticipated release of Stranger Things 3 coming to Netflix on July 4th, The Coca-Cola Company decided to rerelease New Coke for a limited run to coincide with the new season’s setting in 1985.  Coca-Cola produced 500,000 cans of New Coke which has been available for the past three weeks, and shazbazzar and JediShua have gotten their hands on some.  It’s time for a taste test, EarBuds.  Can you guess the results?  (Video available on YouTube.)   Vinyl Scratchback What did you do in the ‘80s when you had trouble going to sleep in a quiet room?  Lie down and listen to stand-up comedy, of course!  JediShua and shazbazzar (with input from EarBuds) remember some comedy albums they heard when they were younger.  George Carlin, Robin Williams, Justin Wilson, Laurel & Hardy, Howie Mandel, Eddie Murphy, Sam Kinison, Gallagher, Cheech & Chong, and Steve Martin all make the list as we remember comedy on vinyl.   Thanks for tuning in to TechnoRetro Dads, EarBuds!  Go online for more TechnoRetro Dads on iTunes, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, RetroZap.com, or TechnoRetroDads.libsyn.com.  Pick up your TechnoRetro Dads merchandise at TeePublic.  Don’t forget to rate and review TechnoRetro Dads on iTunes, share us and with us on social media, get TechnoRetro merchandise at TeePublic, and join discussions on Discord about toys, cereal, games, movies and/or shows from the ‘70s and ‘80s by giving the ‘Dads your feedback via voice mail at (209) 878-7323 or sending us your mp3dback via electronic-M to podcast@TechnoRetroDads.com.

Also known as Babes in Toyland, this Laurel & Hardy vehicle actually takes place in the month of July AND it does have monsters (technically), so when Steve Turek joins Derek to tackle this movie this week, it (technically) fits into the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse (technically).
