Is the Reformed Calvinistic? How does reformed epistemology differ specifically from something like scott oliphints "covenantal epistemology"? Is Reformed epistemology plausible outside our western context? What is classical theism? How does it compare or contrast with Buddhist thought? Can a buddhist be a classical theist? What are the main buddhist objections to classical theism? Do these map onto more modern western objections? A review of the semester and overview of Plantinga’s account of warranted Christian belief. We’ve spent this semester discussing arguments and evidence for the truth of Christianity, but is this evidence *necessary* for warranted belief in God? This video is from our 2021 Spring lecture series covering Natural Theology & the Truth of Christianity. Each […]

Tyler McNabb is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy (Humanities) at Houston Baptist University. His specialization is in epistemology and philosophy of religion. In combining these two topics, his current focus has been on defending both proper functionalism and the project of Reformed Epistemology. In addition to his research, he also enjoys teaching, reading theology, witnessing, watching The Walking Dead, and eating Mexican food. Part 1 provides a bit of background information about Tyler and then goes into the intricacies of Reformed Epistemology. In Part 2 we discuss the Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism. Tyler articulates a new version of the argument that avoids a number of objections In Part 3 we discuss an abductive version of the moral argument. We touch on a wide number of subjects rather quickly and succinctly. Buckle up! What is Reformed epistemology? Is it compatible with Catholicism? Can specifically Catholic belief be rational apart from arguments? Dr. Gregory Stacey joins us to discuss his doctoral dissertation where he aims to situate a type of Reformed epistemology within Catholicism. He calls it "Counter-Reformed epistemology" (CRE). In this interview, he provides details behind his model and defends it against several objections. The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others. This Theist/Atheist Discussion features a number of guests, most notably Tyler McNabb and Stephen Law (who recently had an exchange on Unbelievable? on the subject of Reformed Epistemology). The other guests joining are: Cameron Bertuzzi (myself), Josh Parikh, Perry Hendricks, Brett Lunn, Ben Watkins, Ben Bavar. The topic of discussion is Alvin Plantinga's (in)famous Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism. The argument roughly states that the probability our cognitive faculties are reliable given Naturalism & Evolution is low. Hence, the person that believes N&E has a defeater for all of their beliefs, including belief in N&E. Belief in N&E is therefore self-referentially incoherent and cannot rationally be accepted. Can belief in God be rational apart from arguments? What is Reformed epistemology? Do studies in cognitive science provide a defeater for religious belief? Is Reformed epistemology compatible with Catholicism? Is what Vatican I teaches authoritatively in tension with Reformed epistemology? Dr. Tyler McNabb joins us to answer these questions and more! Scientists try to understand Dr. Craig's view on Reformed Epistemology.
While there are numerous arguments for the existence of God, most believers accept theism independent of sophisticated arguments and evidence. Are these theists irrational? In this episode, Zach discusses the idea of Reformed Epistemology developed by Alvin Plantinga who argues Christian believers can be warranted independent of evidence. The core thesis is that while some beliefs require external […]

We discuss Alvin Plantinga’s reformed epistemology, and ask whether belief in god is “properly basic.” We also discuss Cartesian skepticism, the notion of a divine sense or “sensus divinitatis,” and which beliefs should be considered properly basic.
