Many of the ethical issues our culture is wrestling with have an underlying issue in common. The growing confusion we see around us on matters such as abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, transgenderism, and sexual promiscuity all flow downstream from our lack of understanding of what the human body is and means. One person who has sought to account for this confusion and to offer a corrective is Nancy Pearcey, professor of apologetics at Houston Baptist University, where she is also a scholar in residence. Many will be familiar with her previous books, such as Finding Truth and the award-winning Total Truth. Her book, Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality, addresses the worldview that lies behind the huge cultural shifts we have recently experienced in the West—and provides a biblical account of what it means to be made in God's image as men and women. There is a reason the Ten Commandments start with the command to love and worship God above all other things: when our hearts are centered on God, only then are we empowered to fulfill the rest of the commandments that deal with behavior—what we do with our bodies. In this conversation about honoring our human bodies, Sammie and Nancy explore tough questions that Christians face as we navigate what this means in light of our identities.Professor Pearcey is the author of Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality, as well as The Toxic War on Masculinity, The Soul of Science, Saving Leonardo, Finding Truth, and two ECPA Gold Medallion Award Winners: How Now Shall We Live (coauthored with Harold Fickett and Chuck Colson) and Total Truth. Her books have been translated into 19 languages. She is professor and scholar in residence at Houston Christian University. A former agnostic, Pearcey has spoken at universities such as Princeton, Stanford, USC, and Dartmouth. She has been quoted in The New Yorker and Newsweek, highlighted as one of the five top women apologists by Christianity Today, and hailed in The Economist as "America's pre-eminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual."Here are some things we mentioned in the episode: Love Thy Body - link to purchase! Professor Pearcey's WebsiteYou Were Made for More Social Media: FacebookTwitterInstagram

Episode 182 Conquerors Not Captives with Joey Dodson Dr. Joey Dodson is a good friend and a former student of mine. He was traveling through Houston and I grabbed him, forced him to each lunch, and asked him to be a part of this podcast. Who Is Joey Dodson? Joey Dodson is the Craig L. Blomberg Chair of New Testament at Denver Seminary.  He married his first-grade sweetheart . . . seriously.  They have five children, two grandchildren and one grandchild on the way. Dodson attended Ouachita Baptist University, and then came to Houston where he studied under David Capes at Houston Baptist University. He then moved overseas to do his PhD at the University of Aberdeen with Simon Gathercole and Francis Watson.  From there he studied at the University of Tubingen. After his PhD Dodson taught for a time at Houston Baptist University.  Later at Ouachita Baptist University.  For the last five years he and his family have made their home in Denver where Joey learned the secret to contentment: move to Colorado.  He loves hiking and the outdoors. Conquerors Not Captives Conquerors Not Captives: Reframing Romans 7 for the Christian Life (Lexham, 2024) is Joey Dodson's latest book. He co-wrote it with his daughter, Mattie Mae Motl.  It's part of a series by Lexham Press whose goal is to take what is standard in the academy to the church. His basic argument is that we must read Romans 7 in context, thus as part of Romans 6-8.  It must not be read in isolation. Nor should it be read over against our experience.  It's Exegesis not Narci-gesis.  Accordingly, the “I” of Romans 7 is not the normative Christian Life. We're here today to discuss her most recent, best selling book - (Hold it up - get it at Amazon) The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes - Grounded Ep. 28 • Let's start here - People often accuse evangelical Christian men of being oppressive patriarchs, prone to abuse. But you make the surprising claim that they test out as having the lowest levels of abuse and divorce. Please explain. Why impt. • But don't we often hear that Christians divorce at the same rate as the rest of society? • Your book says men are being torn between two competing scripts for masculinity. What are they? • Men are falling behind in education, employment, health, and even life expectancy. Why are people ignoring the real problems men face today? • Why should we worry about men? Don't they still occupy most positions of power? • Your book says criticisms of men began much earlier than most of us think. Where did the idea of “toxic masculinity” come from? • As American society grows more secular, how does secularization contribute to a negative script for masculinity? • Today's public rhetoric often casts men as villains and women as victims. Where did these stereotypes come from? • Your book says the Darwinian theory of evolution normalized many traits in men that today are labeled toxic. How so? • The long-term strategy for preventing toxic behavior in men is for fathers to invest deeply in their sons. But the media portrays fathers as incompetent idiots. Where did that negative image come from? • What practical steps can fathers take to be more involved with their sons—and their daughters? • At the end of your book, you address the problem of abuse in Christian homes. How can churches respond more effectively? • How can people connect with you and purchase a copy of The Toxic War on Masculinity? Why is Masculinity Toxic? Professor Nancy Pearcey Explains Why the Biblical View of Manhood is Anything But

Lighthouse Faith – FOX News Radio

Author Nancy Pearcey says the problem with our view of manhood today is that "There are two competing scripts for masculinity." They are the God Man vs the Real Man. The Bible says men are made in God's image, as are women. And that men's unique masculine strengths are not given to them just to get whatever they want, but to provide, protect and take care of the people they love. So where did the idea infiltrate culture that masculinity is toxic? The irony is that the secular view of masculinity created the image of toxicity, or "The Real Man" image. Pearcey says, “Culture imposes this 'real man' script on men that contains a lot of the traits that, of course, we consider toxic: entitlement, dominance, control, and so on. When these traits are disconnected from the moral vision of the God man, it can slide into being toxic." On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Pearcey, a professor at Houston Baptist University, talks about the dichotomy of masculinity in today's culture in her new book, “The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes.” Her data, mined from social science research, shows how toxic masculinity comes from the secular culture. Says Pearcey, "The problem is that men are being accused of being toxic, and the solution actually turns out to be a Christian view of masculinity." Learn more about your ad choices. Have you ever doubted the reliability of the Bible? Our guest today, Mary Jo Sharp was raised in Portland, Oregon. Where she grew up, there wasn't much talk about God or the Bible. Around this same time, her high school band director gave her a bible. She was about to graduate, and he knew that she would have questions. He told her to turn to the Bible for answers. In college, Mary Jo started going to church. She was searching for answers and community, but not all of the experiences she had were good. Through her spiritual journey, she encountered apologetics. In her wrestling with her faith, apologetics provided some of the answers she was desperately searching for.Mary Jo is now an assistant professor of apologetics at Houston Baptist University and the founder and director of Confident Christianity Apologetics Ministry. On this ID the Future from the vault, Nancy Pearcey, professor and scholar in residence at Houston Baptist University, tells some of the political history of Darwinism, and explains how the same troubling issues persist today. Darwin was one of the first to say, if it isn't purely naturalistic, it isn't science. Others, then and now, have suggested that we can keep Darwinian evolution and just trust that God is at work behind the scenes. Pearcey, co-author of The Soul of Science: Christian Faith and Natural Philosophy, says that the problem with this tactic of wedding Darwinism and theism is that ultimately it turns one's understanding of God into something that is largely private and subjective. Nancy Pearcey is the author of Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality, as well as The Soul of Science, Saving Leonardo, Finding Truth, and Total Truth. She is professor and scholar in residence at Houston Baptist University and has been highlighted as one of the five top women apologists by Christianity Today, and hailed in The Economist as "America's pre-eminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual." Nancy Pearcey joins the show today to discuss her book Love Thy Body and the foundational religious premise that animates secular progressivism today. What has come to be called body-self dualism or the fact-value split, Nancy explains how this religious worldview drives every forward movement of the secular moral revolution. Rather than dealing in bits and pieces with these culture war issues, Nancy argues we must identify the underlying worldview behind it all if we're going to be effective. While secularism offers a hatred and dismissal of our bodies as the result of mindless, purposeless forces, Christianity offers a high view of our bodies as intrinsically valuable with a purpose. Seth and Nancy discuss the consequences of this key feature of “progressivism” and why separating our rights from our human nature ends in disaster and despair. And lastly, Nancy leaves us with positive ways to argue for the Christian view of the body against the culture of death and their assault on the Imago Dei.  Date: 09/09/22 To help UnAborted create more pro-life content and take our content to the streets, become a Patron of the show at https://www.patreon.com/unaborted To help Seth educate and expose culture to the evil of abortion so that every person has a right to be born, become an ALLY of The White Rose Resistance at https://thewhiterose.life

Many people take antidepressants because they have been led to believe their depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. But a recent study suggests that "there is no convincing evidence that depression is associated with, or caused by, lower serotonin concentrations or activity." So, if a chemical imbalance isn't the problem, why does it seem like our society is slowly spiraling into a perpetual state of doom? We keep seeing rising rates of suicide, drug use, depression, anxiety, and other indicators of unhappiness--especially in teenagers and young adults. Could it be that we have a WORLDVIEW imbalance? After all, if we're going to believe that there is no God and life has no meaning, might that cause us to be a bit depressed? To help turn the tide, Mary Jo Sharp, a former atheist who is now an assistant professor of apologetics at Houston Baptist University, has helped put together a 14-episode video series and curriculum called Darkroom to give teens (age 13-17) the OK for expressing their doubts and questions about the Christian worldview in a safe environment. This million-dollar curriculum is available for FREE online for church leaders, youth ministers, parents, and anyone seeking to lead and engage students in discussions on 14 key issues of faith using materials that are sure to hold their attention. Some of the topics addressed in this Gen-Z narrative-driven curriculum include: sin science suicide deconstruction the Bible the problem of evil the purpose of the church sexuality and love pain and suffering and more to come! Mary Jo, author of 'Why I Still Believe' and several other books, is a clear communicator with a heart for people. She talks with Frank about her fascinating journey from atheist to assistant professor of apologetics and the importance of being able to ask questions (especially at a young age) when experiencing doubt in the Christian faith.
